THE ALPHABET The Greek alphabet consists of 24 letters. Some are the same as Englishletters, others look the same but represent different sounds, while others areunlike any English letters. The capital and small letters are:

The Greek letters and their combinations represent specific sounds which almost never vary:

VOWEL SOUNDS The vowel sounds include: α a as in atε, αι e as in bedη, ι, υ, �ι, ει ea as in seat�, ω o as in hot�υ oo as in choose

CONSONANT SOUNDS The consonant sounds are grouped according to their pronunciation:1 pronounced with the lips: π p as in pot

v as in vat� f as in farμπ b as in bar

2 pronounced with the teeth: τ t as in tentδ th as in theθ th as in thinντ d as in door

3 pronounced with the throat: κ k as in keyγ similar to w as in wood� strong h as in Scottish lochγκ, γγ g as in good

Double consonants, apart from γγ, are pronounced as if they were only one.Practise pronouncing the individual letters many times, particularly theconsonants γ and �, which may present some difficulty.

STRESS The stress on the word is indicated by the tonic accent ( ΄) marked on thevowel of the stressed syllable, but is not marked on capital letters or on one-syllable words. So, it will be easy for you to pronounce any written wordcorrectly.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

In unit 1 you can take your first steps in learning Greek. From unit 2 onwards, you’ll find that the structure of each unitis consistent. Each of the units has four parts:

Part A is presented by Niko Kazakos and Maria Nikolaou, and gives you the KEY LANGUAGE ofthe unit.

Part B gives you the chance to hear Niko using the language in real-life situations in Athens.Youwill learn to use this language yourself.

Part C reminds you of the KEY LANGUAGE.Then you get the chance to use it and have thesatisfaction of realising that you can cope.

Part D reveals the outcome of the story you heard in part B.You should be able to understandthis without any help – although help is there if you need it.

The main activities you will do to achieve efficient learning are summarised below:

1 work with the book;

2 listen to the recording;

3 stop the recording to repeat or think;

4 use the book and recording together.

SYMBOLS There are four symbols used in this book:

the question mark indicates that you’ll find solutions at the end of the unit;

USING THE COURSE In each unit, the most effective way to learn is to start by working on the book and therecording together.You can then use your eyes and your ears to help you to understandand learn.The book and the recording will take you step by step through the unit.You’llsee that the English advice and explanations are always on the left-hand page, and theGreek they refer to is always on the right-hand page.

When you feel confident with the language, you can work with just the recording. Listento it as often as you can – in the car, on the train, while doing thehousework, for example.This repeated playing will help you to learnthe language and to become really confident and fluent. Sometimesyou can listen very carefully and repeat what you hear.At other times

you can just have it in the background while you relax or do something else.All this willhelp you to progress quickly in the fast lane to learning Greek.

The first step in understanding written Greek is to study the Greek alphabet on theopposite page and the sets of letters with the sounds they represent.You will soon feel itisn’t all Greek to you!

Welcome to unit 1 which will give you a taste of the course.You may be very pleasantly surprised by how much youcan understand.

PART A: KEY LANGUAGE

1.1 NIKO AND MARIA Each unit is introduced by Niko and Maria.They guide you through the KEY LANGUAGE.You will also hear it being used by Maria, Niko and the people he meets in Athens.In this unit you will learn how to:

– say hello (or goodbye);– say what your name is;– understand many useful Greek words and pronounce them the Greek way.

1.2 KEY LANGUAGE In each unit, you’ll be presented with the KEY LANGUAGE. Here it is for unit 1.

Hello! My name’s Niko (they call me Niko). Hello! My name’s Maria (they call me Maria). Hello, Niko! Hello, Maria!

The Greek phrase Γεια σας literally means health to you (cheers), but can equally beused as a general term for hello and goodbye. Γεια σας (plural) is normally used as agreeting to many people or people we don’t know well.The informal Γεια σ#υ is usedto greet friends, or children, or together with the first name. Greek names areintroduced with the definite article # (male) or η (female), and male names take a final -ς.When used in greetings, however, the article is not used and the final -ς of a malename is dropped.Look at the Greek and make sure that you know what each sentence means.Then followeach sentence in the book as you listen to it. Do this several times until you feelconfident with the sentences.Then play them again and repeat after each sentence.Whenthis seems easy, try saying each sentence together with each speaker, imitating the speedand the accent.This is an excellent learning technique which you can use throughout the course. It canbe summarised as:(i) read and listen;(ii) read, listen and repeat after the Greek speakers;(iii) read, listen and repeat with the Greek speakers.

PART B: LANGUAGE IN ACTION

1.3 OVER TO YOU Now you can use the language you have learned from the recording. Look at the photosof people (α-δ), and the KEY LANGUAGE on the page opposite and decide what eachperson would say to introduce himself/herself.You’re given an example (Παράδειγμα)in Greek. How would YOU greet Maria and introduce yourself (ε)?

1.4 LEARNING STRATEGIES Though they don’t look the same, lots of Greek words are pronounced similarly toEnglish ones (though they may be stressed differently), e.g. ένα τα�ί, ένα τρέν#, ένατηλέ/ων#, ένα θέατρ#. Recognising them can often give the key to the meaning ofa whole phrase or sentence: – you don’t need to know every word you see or hear tounderstand the message. Choosing from the Greek words given above, decide how eachof the photos of places on the page opposite should be labelled.Listen to how these words are said, and repeat each one several times.

1.5 VOCABULARY You already understand a lot of Greek words, and you can prove it. Cover up the Englishwords below and look at the list of Greek words on the page opposite.Tick all those youknow, can work out, or guess.Then check with the list on this page, and learn those youdidn’t know.You could copy them and their English equivalents into a notebook (the veryact of writing them down will help you to learn them) and carry it around with you,learning a few words whenever you have a spare moment. In each unit, you’ll be given auseful hint about how to learn words. Use techniques which work for you whenever youtry to learn new words and phrases.

PART C: TEST YOURSELF

1.7 Now that you can understand all the language you’ve met, practise saying it. Listen to therecording again as you look at the Greek text. Repeat each sentence after and then withthe speakers, until you’re sure you’ve learned it and that you can say it with a goodaccent.Then try adapting some of the sentences you’ve learned, using other words youknow, in order to say different things. How would you say:

2.1 WELCOME TO ATHENS! Your teacher, Niko, arrives in Athens by train.At the station, he records some usefullanguage for us. First, Costas Vasiliou, a business manager, is welcomed by Melina Karra,his company representative.Then Niko takes a taxi to his hotel.

In this unit you can learn how to:– say hello and goodbye, please and thank you;– attract people’s attention;– and, above all, make the most of a small amount of language.

There’s no magic wand to enable you to speak fluent Greek overnight. Goodwill isimportant, though.As you listen to Niko in Athens, you’ll find that a smile and the wordplease! will help you through a variety of situations.And note that in Greece manypeople will want to be on first-name terms with you quite soon.

To the Trade Fair Centre, please.* Besides Γεια σας! you can also say Καλημέρα!, *αίρετε! or Καλησπέρα!, depending on the time ofday, to mean Good morning!, Good afternoon! or Good evening! respectively.** Ευ�αριστώ can be extended to Σας ευ�αριστώ.*** Sometimes Γεια σας! or Γεια! is used instead.

Try to learn the Greek phrases, then cover up the English KEY LANGUAGE on this page.Looking at the page opposite, see how much of the English you can remember, thencover up the Greek phrases and do it in reverse.

LEARNING STRATEGIES Remember to work through every section with the book and recording as many times asyou need in order to feel comfortable with the language. In unit 1, you learned thesequence: read and listen, then repeat after, and then repeat with, the Greek speakers.Now add another step.When you have repeated after and with the Greek speakers, tryto keep the language in your mind while you do something else.Then try saying thesentences again, gradually increasing the time gap. In this way, the KEY LANGUAGE willbecome part of your long-term memory – you will have learned it! So, this strategy canbe summed up as:

(i) read and listen;(ii) repeat after the speakers;(iii) repeat with the speakers;(iv) repeat without an immediate model.

2.4 STRATEGIES It’s a good idea to train yourself to listen and to read, in a positive way, picking out thewords that carry the message, and ignoring what is less important.What message isconveyed in the three examples on the opposite page?

2.5 VOCABULARY You’ll understand better if you anticipate the words you expect to hear in a particularsituation, and learn them. In this unit, you will hear Niko in the station café, at the kiosk,taking a taxi, and arriving at the hotel. Look at the list of words below and tick any thatyou expect to hear in Greek in these situations. First, learn the Greek for all the wordsyou ticked, and then listen to the recording. One good technique is to concentrate on aword and to try to ‘photograph’ it in your mind.Then cover it up and write it down frommemory. Do this with all the words, and then with four or five at a time.You can use thistechnique again if you find it useful. (The words in these lists are always given in theorder in which you hear them.)

A useful way of dealing with any words or phrases you find difficult to remember is tocopy them out with their English meanings on a slip of paper, and carry it about with you.Use any spare moments to revise them – in a bus, for example, or even while waiting foryour morning coffee!

2.6 THINKING AHEAD You will find it easier to understand people if you think in advance about what they arelikely to say in certain situations. So, when Niko asks for a cup of coffee at the stationcafé, you already know that he’s unlikely to say I’d like you to bring me a cup ofcoffee, please, but rather A coffee, please. Note down in English similar phrases youmight hear or need in the following situations:

a at a street kiosk (e.g. A bar of chocolate, please.);b arriving at the hotel;c ordering something in a restaurant.

2.11 GRAMMAR A noun is a word used to name a person, a place or a thing (e.g. Νίκ�ς, Αθήνα,τηλέ"ων�). Some nouns in Greek are masculine, some are feminine, and some areneuter.The word for the for a masculine noun is �, but it becomes τ�ν or τ� when youask for someone or something (e.g. τ�ν Καθηγητή %ικ�ν-μ�υ). For a femininenoun it’s η, but it becomes την or τη when you ask for someone or something (e.g.την κυρία Καρρά) and for a neuter noun it’s τ� (e.g. τ� Lεν�δ��εί�). It’s not easyto tell whether a noun is masculine, feminine or neuter, although you can sometimes tellfrom the ending.When σε (to, at or in) is used with a noun, τ�ν (or τ�) change toστ�ν (or στ�), την (or τη) to στην (or στη) and τ� becomes στ�.The word for a/an, when asking for something, for a masculine noun is έναν (e.g. ένανκα"έ), for a feminine noun it’s μια or μία (e.g. μια κ-κα-κ-λα) and for a neuternoun it’s ένα (e.g. ένα ταLί).As you go on, you’ll learn a few other forms of the wordsfor the and a. 4.1 NIKO AND THE PROFESSOR Niko goes to the university of Athens to meet Professor Economou, an expert incommunication in Greek. Niko discovers that people like talking about their families.

It’s useful to be able to break the ice when you first meet people. Note down examplesof situations when you might want to do this (at a conference, for example). One way ofbreaking the ice is to talk about your family, or the weather.

You must always remember that Greek namesare normally used with the article � or η.To helpyou learn the KEY LANGUAGE, draw a ‘word sun’:write a word or phrase relating to the family atthe end of each ‘ray’. Learn them by heart.Thencover them up, and try to re-create the ‘wordsun’ from memory. Check with the original.

A useful point of contact can be made by talking about homes, and about the differencesor similarities between Great Britain and Greece. Owning a house has been considered anormal ambition by most Greek people.They can now buy a house more easily byobtaining loans from banks, at a privileged interest rate. However, most Greek families livein flats – which are usually rented – rather than individual houses, especially in big cities.

Do you like the flat? * The negative form of a verb is simply made by adding δεν before it. It regularly becomes δε in front ofcertain consonants (�, γ, δ, �, θ, λ, μ, ν, ρ, σ, &, �). Similarly, τ�ν, στ�ν, την, στην become τ�, στ�, τη,στη in front of the same consonants (unit 2).
