    Abstract

This project mainly deals with the design and analysiswith concerned to leakage of piston consideringdisplacements in all possible directions. Piston is acomponent of reciprocating engines, reciprocatingpumps, gas compressors and pneumatic cylinders

among other similar mechanisms. In an engine, itspurpose is to transfer force from expanding gas in thecylinder to the crankshaft ia a piston rod and orconnecting rod. !ere the piston is designed, analy"edand the manufacturing process has been studied.

    Piston temperature has considerable

in#uence on e$ciency, emission, performance of the %Iengine. Purpose of the inestigation is measurement ofpiston transient temperature at seeral points on thepiston, from cold start to steady condition andcomparison with the results of &nite element analysis.

    Introduction

Piston is considered to be one of the most importantparts in a reciprocating engine in which it helps toconert the chemical energy obtained by the combustionof fuel into useful mechanical power. The purpose of thepiston is to proide a means of coneying the expansion

of the gases to the crankshaft ia the connecting rod, without loss of gas from aboe or oil from below. Piston isessentially a cylindrical plug that moes up and down inthe cylinder. It is e'uipped with piston rings to proide agood seal between the cylinder wall and piston. Althoughthe piston appears to be a simple part, it is actually 'uitecomplex from the design standpoint.

The piston must be as strong as possible( howeer, its weight should be minimi"ed as far as possible inorder to reduce the inertia due to its reciprocating mass.

    Bonclusion

6.The 4aximum temperature in the Brown of piston is ?:@for Alluminium,Barbon composites and Alloy steels whereas the ariation in the piston is di1erent for di1erentmaterials due to the thermal conductiity is di1erent.

.The 4aximum stress induced in the piston is

*C.:4pa,.;6D4pa and 6>;.:4pa for Alluminium,Barboncomposites and Alloy steels because of its ariation inmaterials properties. The factor of safety aries from @ forAlluminium,;; for Barbons composites and ? for %teelpistons.

?.The piston is rigid under all the three materials andarying deformation of ;.CCmm, ;.66mm, and ;.>mmrespectiely for aluminum, carbon composite and steelpistons.

*. the design of the piston is safe under engine conditionsfor all the materials based on rigidity and strength criteria.
