Music - Motivator or Distraction?

Most students listen to music while studying. With either itunes/iphone in ears, or even an “old fashioned” CD player going, students are listening to anything from Beyonce to GoodCharlotte while doing homework. There are advantages anddisadvantages to listening to music while studying.

Advantages:

Disadvantages:

• Most students say listening to music helps themstudy longer. If something can make it slightly lessboring, students are more likely to keep doing it forlonger.

• Listening to music has been found to be LESSdistracting than listening to random household noise.

• Music puts students in a good mood. The bettermood we are in, the longer we persist on difficulttasks.

• Research shows that compared to silence, peopleare less able to do difficult tasks while listening tomusic.

• Studies show that if you have a problem solving task, people who do it in silence compared to those doingit while listening to music do the task better andquicker.

• It seems that music interferes with our attention andcognitive skills particularly music with lyrics andmusic that is unpredictable and slightly bizarre. It isalso especially distracting for introverts compared toextroverts.

Christmas in July Vinnies Winter Appeal

Thank you to those of you who have donated canned and drygoods for the Winter Appeal. Food and clean warm blanketscan still be placed under the tree in the office until the 28th July.

Value of the week

The value of the week is ‘Harmony’. Please read on to discoverwhat this means at St Francis College.

The Values of Harmony and Peace

In a College community as diverse as St Francis College, thevalues of peace and harmony take on special meaning. At aMass in Assisi in 2013, Pope Francis had this to say in hishomily:

Franciscan peace is not something saccharine. Hardly! That is not the real Saint Francis! Nor is it a kind ofpantheistic harmony with forces of the cosmos… That isnot Franciscan either! It is not Franciscan, but a notionthat some people have invented! The peace of SaintFrancis is the peace of Christ, and it is found by thosewho “take up” their “yoke”, namely, Christ’scommandment: Love one another as I have loved you(cf. Jn 13:34; 15:12). This yoke cannot be borne witharrogance, presumption or pride, but only withmeekness and humbleness of heart.

See a description of all our Franciscan values on the website.

“…to be loved as to love”

Welcome back for Term 3.

Numeracy is a foundational skill for student success at schooland beyond. As such schools and families play an importantrole in developing student capability. The MathematicsTeaching and Learning Centre at ACU highlights some generalprinciples for families to help children with Mathematics:

• Listen to music when you really “have to” – whenbored, in a bad mood or tempted to stop (or can’tstart) homework.

• Listen to music if your house is really noisy and youcan’t shut it out any other way.

• Turn the music off when you are doing somethingquite hard (revising for a test or working on difficultconcepts).

• Listen to music without lyrics if you can (classical, electronica), music that has a predictable beat/tuneor music that is very familiar to you.

• Turn the music down a couple of notches.

3

They also suggest activities to assist parents in helping childrenwith Mathematics. One area that I will focus on in this newsletteris Estimating.

Estimating is an important activity and applies to all aspects ofmathematics. Wherever possible, ask your children to estimatequantities. For example, you might ask children to:

Positive Behaviour 4 Learning

Positive Behaviour 4 Learning: Years 7-12St Francis College aims to produce thenecessary academic and social skills withinour students that will enhance their ability tosucceed and develop for many years tocome. To ensure this development takes place, we setexpectations for our students which encourages them to strivefor success and personal development. The last two‘Expectations of the Week’ have been specifically designed to

develop these essential skills and consist of; Lining up andwearing the appropriate uniform.

Lining Up

By expecting students to line up in two lines outside theclassroom, routine and structure can become evident in thebeginning of a lesson across the College. It is important that weteach and model the behaviour we wish to see in our studentsby being consistent and setting clear expectations for all. Liningup is coupled with the expectation that students are ready tolearn and have the correct equipment for the lesson. It alsoprovides the opportunity for the teacher to individually welcomeeach student.

Wearing the appropriate uniform

By ensuring that students are wearing the College uniform withpride at all times. Our students are the strongest advocates ofour College. It is important that they too see the College uniformas a way of unifying and representing our community amidstof our many differences. We want our students to be proud towear their uniform appropriately.

These are essential qualities that will no doubt improve yourchild’s personal wellbeing and success, but we need yourassistance at home in further developing these qualities. Askyour child what the ‘Expectation of the Week’ is and teachthem the skills and techniques that have worked well for you.Through this partnership of College and home, we can ensurethat your child has the very best opportunity to succeed.
