Extraordinary professional developmentThe Capital Conference is the only professional

development event in Ohio designed specifically for public school management teams. It offers a wealth of critical information on the latest public education issues, trends and technology. Learning sessions — the core curriculum of the conference — are organized into focus areas and led by top experts. You’ll also learn from other attendees by collaborating and connecting with board colleagues from around the state to share challenges and solutions.

Additional Sunday sessions expand learning opportunities and add value to your conference

There is a full slate of programming on Sunday, including numerous educational seminars and an afternoon General Session. There also is a free leadership development Spotlight Session led by superintendents from two of Ohio’s largest school districts. Sunday wraps up with the Welcome Reception, which provides attendees an informal atmosphere for networking while enjoying great food and refreshments.

Specialized training throughout the conferenceAlong with the additional learning opportunities on Sunday,

there is specialized training throughout the event. Many sessions will provide the latest on school finance and legislation. Others focus on department leaders, such as curriculum coordinators, transportation directors, technology supervisors, human resources managers and public relations specialists. New this year, the conference will be paperless, with handouts available through the Conference App and the conference website, http://conference.ohioschoolboards.org/handouts. Handouts will be posted a week prior to the event; attendees can download or print copies before they arrive.

Keynote speakers offer insights, inspirationThe First General Session speaker is Alex Banayan, who

was recognized as one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 and Business Insider’s Most Powerful People Under 30. He is the author of “The Third Door: The Wild Quest to Uncover How the World’s Most Successful People Launched Their Careers.” The just-released book chronicles Banayan’s five-year journey to track down some of the world’s most accomplished people to unlock the secrets of their success.

Academy award-winning actress, director and producer Goldie Hawn will headline the Second General Session. In recent years, Hawn has become an advocate for the betterment of youth education programs. She is the founder of The Hawn Foundation, a public charity with a mission to equip children with the social and emotional skills they need to lead smarter, healthier and happier lives. The foundation created the MindUP program, an evidence-based curriculum and teaching model for grades pre-K through eight that provides children with tools to improve academic performance.

Registration opens July 16Materials will be mailed to districts or download registration forms at http://conference.ohioschoolboards.org

See the stars shine at Student Achievement FairIf you’re looking for educational innovations, you'll find

them in the Student Achievement Fair. One of the most popular conference events, the fair shines a spotlight on 100 of Ohio’s most exemplary and forward-looking school district programs. Meet with students and teachers at their booths to learn how districts around the state are innovating to increase student achievement and prepare Ohio’s children for the future. You’ll be sure to take home several ideas to implement in your district. The fair also includes five talented student entertainment groups — one from each of OSBA’s five regions — and a visual arts exhibit.

A world-class Trade Show The Capital Conference Trade Show has a well-earned

reputation as the biggest and best exhibition of school goods and services in the nation. This vast exposition will host nearly 600 booths of vendors offering everything a school district needs to support student achievement and make the most of its resources.

Must-attend eventsConference Luncheons (separate registration required)

The Conference Luncheons provide another chance to hear renowned speakers share their leadership strategies and success stories. The Monday Conference Luncheon presenter is Cedric Jennings, who heads a Washington, D.C., social service agency and overcame the challenges of inner-city life to earn several Ivy League degrees. Ohio State University and NFL football great Eddie George speaks at the Tuesday Conference Luncheon. George now focuses on building businesses that allow people to grow and succeed.

Spotlight SessionsThese sessions allow time for attendees to take a “deeper

dive” into timely topics vital to successfully leading a school district. Topics include leadership development, legislative updates, diversity and inclusion, school transportation and student mental health.

Public records trainingEach school board member or designee must undergo three

hours of approved public records training during the member’s term of office. Completing this session, presented by the state auditor’s office, fulfills the training requirement. This session is offered at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13. This session is open to conference registrants only.

Alex Banayan — millennial thought leader and venture capitalist Instead of studying for his college finals, Alex Banayan went to audition for “The Price is Right.”

It turned out to be the best decision he ever made. The college freshman sold the sailboat he won on the show and invested in his real fascination

— the key to success. He set out to uncover how the world’s most successful people launched their careers.

Banayan, one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 and Business Insider’s Most Powerful People Under 30, spent years nagging celebrities and business moguls for interviews. Ultimately, he sat down with Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, Maya Angelou, Steven Spielberg, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffett and many others.

Banayan’s book, “The Third Door: The Wild Quest to Uncover How the World’s Most Successful People Launched Their Careers,” chronicles his unbelievable journey tracking down the world’s most successful people and uncovering how their careers began.

Inspiring General Session speakers

Goldie Hawn — Academy Award-winning actress and child advocateAcademy Award-winning actress Goldie Hawn believes “children light the path to joy” and

dedicates much of her life’s work to creating innovative solutions to help children thrive.Alarmed by increases in school violence, youth depression and suicide, Hawn created The

Hawn Foundation in 2003. Its mission is to equip children with the social and emotional skills needed to lead smarter, healthier, happier and, ultimately, more productive lives.

Hawn’s foundation, which serves over 5 million children worldwide, worked with neuroscientists, educators, psychologists and researchers to develop MindUP. The evidence-based curriculum and teaching model for grades pre-K through eight helps children understand their own emotions, reduce stress and anxiety, increase empathy and improve academic performance.

Hawn got her break on the 1960s NBC variety show “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.” She went on to star in many films, including her Academy Award-winning performance in “Cactus Flower.” She

later received an Oscar nomination for “Private Benjamin.”Sponsored by Baird Public Finance, CompManagement, Ohio School Plan and Squire Patton Boggs (US) LLP.

Cedric Jennings — from inner city to Ivy League; District of Columbia Youth Advisory Council directorCedric Jennings grew up in one of Washington, D.C.’s, most dangerous neighborhoods, where the dropout rate was well into

double digits. However, he was an honor student at Frank W. Ballou Senior High School.Jennings, who heads a social service agency in the nation’s capital, overcame the challenges of

inner-city life and went on to earn several Ivy League degrees. His personal story of struggle and triumph is recounted in Pulitzer-Prize winning author Ron

Suskind’s best-selling book, “A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey From the Inner City to the Ivy League.” The book follows Jennings from high school, through his demanding first year at Brown University and to his ensuing success.

After completing his graduate studies at Harvard Graduate School of Education and the University of Michigan, Jennings returned to Washington, D.C., and dedicated his life to helping others. In January 2011, Mayor Vincent C. Gray appointed him to serve as director of the District of Columbia Youth Advisory Council.

Special events offer fresh insights

Eddie George — NFL Rookie of the Year, Heisman Trophy winner, and Tennessee Titan and OSU football starOhio State University (OSU) and NFL star Eddie George ended a legendary football career with a Heisman Trophy, numerous

NFL Rookie of the Year awards and many pro football records. He’s only the second NFL running back to rush for 10,000 yards while never missing a start, joining the Cleveland Browns’ Jim Brown.

But, George didn’t want his legacy to end there. After earning a Master of Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, he remains focused on businesses that help improve the quality of life for all Americans. His vision of “healthy people and healthy places” is brought to life through George Enterprises, whose companies include EGX Lifestyle and EDGE, a planning and design firm that helps create healthy communities.

George also has discovered another talent — acting. In 2016, he made his Broadway debut in “Chicago” as the charming lawyer Billy Flynn. He also has appeared in movies and TV shows, including CBS’ “NCIS: Los Angeles” and HBO’s “Ballers.”

RegistrationRegistration and housing instructions have been sent to all

superintendents, treasurers, Ohio Council of School Board Attorneys (OCSBA) members, exhibitors and OSBA sustaining members. School board members and other administrators simply need to contact their treasurer or superintendent to register. You must be registered by 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, to receive a housing code before housing opens at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6.

To register for the conference and special events, all attendees from the same district should be listed on the district’s registration form. Return this form to OSBA with a check or purchase order covering all registration and ticketed event fees.

For those not registered by Thursday, Nov. 8, on-site Capital Conference registration will be open on Sunday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Monday, Nov. 12, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the center of the Greater Columbus Convention Center (GCCC) Main Concourse.

Registration feesRegistration is $295 per person for each of the first six

people from a member school district. School district group registration — more than six people from a member school district — is a flat fee of $1,850. Registration for OCSBA members is $295 per person. Registration for OSBA sustaining members, government employees and retired administrators is $60. Retired administrators who are current board members or rehired administrators do not qualify for the lower rate. Spouses may attend the conference for free, but must be registered to receive an official badge.

Those attending the School Law Workshop are subject to the same registration procedures as other conference attendees. Attorneys employed by a school district may register with their district.

Ticketed event feesTwo special Capital Conference events require additional

fees, and registration should be paid in advance. Attendees can register on their district’s registration form. Event details are on page 5.

Registration for the Monday Luncheon, featuring Cedric Jennings, is $55. Registration for the Tuesday Luncheon, with Eddie George, also is $55.

Note: Depending on availability, limited on-site luncheon ticket sales may be available until 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, and Tuesday, Nov. 13, on a first-come, first-served basis at Registration. The cost for an on-site ticket is $60.

Registration and ticketed event cancellation policies

If it is necessary for you to cancel your conference registration, refunds will be made only if your name badge is returned to OSBA by 5 p.m. on Nov. 9. OSBA encourages substitutions from within a district; just notify OSBA of the substitution. For a cancellation of a ticketed event (Monday Luncheon or Tuesday Luncheon), you must notify OSBA by 5 p.m. on Nov. 9 to receive a full refund or no charge to the district. Ticketed event cancellations received after Nov. 9 will be charged 50% of the fee. Cancellations the day of the event will be charged the full amount. There are no refunds for no-shows. Refunds of fees paid will be issued to the district after the conference.

Capital Conference housing FAQOSBA works with 12 hotels in downtown Columbus to

ensure rooms are held for attendees who use OSBA’s housing process and that room rates stay below $200 per night. Unfortunately, OSBA cannot hold every room in those hotels for the conference; hotels determine how many rooms are available in the OSBA room blocks based on the number of rooms that were used the prior year.

Below are some statistics and FAQs on the rooms available through the OSBA room blocks and information to help attendees learn more about the process. To view more details on the housing process, visit http://conference.ohioschool boards.org/housing.

Conference housing by the numbers• OSBA has 2,158 hotel rooms available in its room blocks in 12 hotels.• In 2017, 554 districts registered for the Capital Conference and received a housing code before housing reservations opened. Of those, 459 district codes were used in the first 15 seconds of housing opening.• By the minute: 1,000 room reservations were made in the first five minutes of housing reservations opening in 2017. In the first 15 minutes, 1,800 reservations were completed and 90% of rooms in the five hotels next to GCCC were taken.

Why should I book inside OSBA’s hotel blocks?OSBA has secured large blocks of rooms at 12 downtown

Columbus hotels. Four hotels have access directly to the convention center: the Hilton, Hyatt Regency, Drury and Crown Plaza, plus a fifth hotel — the Hampton Inn — is across the street without a connector. If one of these hotels is your top choice, we cannot guarantee that you will get a room there. All hotels in the housing block are within eight blocks of the convention center. OSBA provides free shuttles for attendees to use to travel to and from the hotels to the convention center during the conference.

Can I be guaranteed my hotel of choice?Unfortunately, it’s impossible for us to guarantee all 9,300

attendees their first hotel room of choice.

Why don’t you have more rooms in the blocks? It’s based on room availability in the hotels and the history

of conference attendees using the rooms that are available in the blocks. The more rooms that are used, the more that will remain in the housing blocks. If rooms are unused, they could be removed from the blocks in future years.

I don’t want to drive to the convention center. Are there shuttles?

Yes. OSBA offers free, continuous shuttle bus service to the convention center from hotels that are not connected to or near the convention center, as well as to the GCCC East parking lot, on Sunday, Nov. 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Monday, Nov. 12, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parking is available at several lots and garages at or near GCCC. This parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices vary, depending on locations. Facilities within a few minutes walk include the Vine Street Garage, South Garage, Goodale Garage and North and East Lots. A parking map is available at http://conference.ohioschoolboards.org (see map on page 19 for parking locations).

How can OSBA help?OSBA is offering free webinars on Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. and

2 p.m., to guide members through the housing process. Go step-by-step through the process with an OSBA staff member who can answer your questions on the process. Can’t attend? The webinars will be recorded and available the following week.

Capital Conference housing informationMaking hotel reservations

You must be registered for the conference or exhibiting in the Trade Show to request conference housing. After you are registered for the conference, your contact person will receive a confirmation email with information about housing. Hotel reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Thursday, Sept. 6, at 9 a.m. EDT. To make reservations, use the link and unique housing code found in the email that will be sent to your contact person. To receive the link before conference housing opens, your registration must be received no later than 3 p.m. EDT on Thursday, Aug. 30. The housing link will not be available on OSBA’s website. Housing reservations can only be made with your unique housing code and must be made by Friday, Oct. 19, to guarantee conference rates.

Each reservation requires a credit card number to hold reserved rooms.

Cancelling hotel reservationsIf you cancel a reservation at any

time before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, your credit card will be charged a cancellation fee of $100 for each room cancelled. Reservations may be modified — including changing hotels, the name on the reservation or the dates of the stay — at no charge until Wednesday, Nov. 7. After 5 p.m. on Nov. 7, you will need to contact the hotel directly for any new reservations, modifications or cancellations. Failure to cancel a reservation by 5 p.m. on Nov. 7, failure to check in on the scheduled arrival date or an early departure will result in a one-night’s room and tax charge by the hotel.

Please note: No other discounts apply to the housing rates. Also, OSBA’s housing block cancellation policies override the hotels’ cancellation policies.

Note: Pricing current as of June 12, 2018. Parking rates listed are for daily parking and are subject to change.
