When the days get shorter and the temperature gets colder women dress up so their bodies don’t get cold. I hate the cold and the shorter days but love the fashion! Unfortunately the bad side to the cold are our dry skins. For many, the cold, clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring uncom-fortable dryness to the skin of the face, hands and feet. For some the problem is worse than just a gentle, tight, dry feeling. These people suffer with skin so dry it flakes and cracks, even resulting in eczema. (in which the skin becomes inflamed) As soon as you turn the heaters on indoors your skin starts to dry out. It doesn’t matter how you heat your home, whether it be with oil, wood or elec-tricity. The skin still gets dry!

In this edition we are concentrating on those dry skins and what we can do to ensure our skins look their best. We will also look at ways we can eliminate sun damage and sun spots. IPL (Impulse Light Therapy) is the most ef-fective treatment and promises amazing results. We will look at why, how and what to look for.

A closer look: collagen reorganization

IN-Motion Technology represents a breakthrough in patient comfort, speed of procedures and repeatable clinical results.

Why? It provides a gradual thermal rise to the target therapeutic temperature, without the risk of injury and with much less pain for the patient.







The Accent XL procedure is a technique which rejuvenates aging skin in a non-invasive, radiofrequency based procedure by treating two separate layers of skin in a single treat-ment. The technique is called “dual-layer thermotherapy,” and is effective in treating loose, sagging skin, and uneven skin texture and tone. Accent XL is also a very effective tech-nique for the treatment of cellulite. The treatment encourages the skin’s natural develop-ment of collagen, which gives skin its firm, elastic tone. The technique requires no down-time and is non-invasive, making it a popular alternative for both men and women who do not want to commit to more complicated and extensive surgical procedures.

Who is a candidate for Accent XL? The Accent XL procedure is an excellent option for men and women interested in firming up sagging, loose skin or reducing all degrees of cellulite buildup through a non-invasive procedure.

Which area of the body is Accent XL useful for? Accent XL’s unique dual-layer tech-nique is suitable for use anywhere on the body where there is loose, wrinkled, and sag-ging skin or cellulite. Who is not a candidate for Accent XL? In general, men and women who are diabetic, taking photosensitizing drugs, or who have pacemakers are not good candidates for Ac-cent XL procedures. In addition, women who are pregnant or nursing should not undergo Accent XL.

Is the cellulite reduction from Accent XL treatments permanent? Accent XL offers individuals long-term and often permanent results, and the cellulite which is removed by Accent XL is gone for good. This does not mean that new cellulite cannot form in time, however.

How is Accent XL performed? The Accent XL dual-layer technique uses a special hand piece to deliver radiofrequency energy to both the surface and deeper layers of the skin. Both treatments affect the production of collagen, effectively encouraging the skin to produce new collagen, which helps the skin regain some of the elasticity lost through the normal aging process. This dual-layer technique is specially designed to treat both the fine, delicate skin of the face and neck, as well as deeper, thicker skin layers.

This deep treatment also aids in re-contouring the underlying structures of the skin. Most procedures require about 30 to 60 minutes to perform,

depending upon the size of the area being treated, and are often likened to a hot stone massage.

What is recovery from the Accent XL procedure like? With Accent XL, recovery time is minimal. Most patients say the Accent XL treatment feels like a warm stone massage, and there may be some slight redness and warmth in the area following treatment. How-ever, patients are able to return to their regular routines immediately following treatment, which is one of the reasons the Accent XL procedure is so popular.

When will I begin to see the results from Accent XL treatments? You should see the results of the Accent XL treatment immediately following your treatment, when the skin shows the initial evidence of tightening. Your results will continue to improve over time as your body develops new collagen, causing the skin to improve in tone and texture.

How many Accent XL sessions are needed? The number of Accent XL sessions that are required varies based on the individual patient’s condition and the results each individual hopes to achieve through the dual-layer technique. Most patients see visible results after 1 or 2 treatments, but optimal results may require 6 to 12 treatments with the Accent XL technique. Most specialists recommend patients undergo a series of “maintenance” treat-ments to prolong the beneficial effects of the initial Accent XL treatment.

When can one return to work after Accent XL treatment? Individuals can expect to return to their normal routines, including work, immediately following the Accent XL pro-cedure.

What are advantages of Accent XL over other procedures? There is no invasive sur-gery involved in the Accent XL procedure, which is relatively quick and pain-free and re-quires no downtime. The Accent XL also requires fewer treatments than many laser treat-ments.

Is Accent XL approved for use in Australia Yes, Accent XL is approved for use in the Aus-tralia by the TGA.

Is Accent XL covered by insurance companies? Because the Accent Xl procedure is con-sidered a cosmetic procedure, not a medical procedure, it is covered by our medi spa insurance.

What is the cost of Accent XL? Depending upon the area being treated, the cost of Accent XL treatment usually ranges from $280 to $600 per treatment.

Skin Focus - How do you know if you have dry skin? The Cause of Cutaneous Dryness

This is fine skin that pulls and itches with a rough and dry appearance. It may even be-come cracked and flaky. The texture of the skin is tight and wrinkles may be fine and numerous. It may also look stiff and dry. All these signs are associated with a loss of elasticity in the skin. Dry skin oxidises more quickly and therefore ages more quickly than other skin types. And above all, it is skin that suffers from feelings of tightness.

External Causes

These are all factors that may impair the sur-face hydralipid film and that gives rise to dry skin. An unsuitable cleaning routine, with soaps that are too harsh and often alkaline, alcohol based lotions or scrubs that are too abrasive.

Harsh climate elements, cold, wind, exposure to sun and long jour-neys in a plane may be extremely detrimental to cutaneous hydra-tion. Brutal climate changes, going from warm inside to cold weath-er outside definitely plays a big part in dry skin in winter, so to do hot showers!






Skin Focus - How do you know if you have dry skin?

Topically applied medicines (anti-acne or anti-aging treatments) or medicines taken by mouth (eg anti-cholesterol treatments). A lo-cal aesthetic will send skin and hair into turmoil!

Internal Causes

These are all factors that will re-duce the secretion of sebum and sweat:

• Pregnancy • Menopause • Endocrine Disorders (thyroid etc) • Natural aging of skin – the skin becomes dull and rough. The epi-dermis becomes thinner due to a

decrease in the renewal of its cells and the horny layer thickens. • A poor diet or a diet lacking in nutrients

Treatment Focus: Treatment for Dry Skin (Great Winter Treatment)

Algomega Warm Treatment

This treatment is from Thalgo’s Headquarters in France! This procedure will nourish, repair and restore comfort, suppleness and radiance to your skin.

From the first treatment, this delicious treat-ment deeply nourishes and moisturises the skin, instantly restoring its suppleness, softness and auto-defence mechanisms!

This treatment is recommended in a course of 6, once to twice a week.

Ingredients :

Complex algomega, blend of rapseed, soy and corn oils, gelatine for the neck.

What happens in the treatment :

Once the skin has been perfectly cleansed, toned and energised with an exfoliant, your algomega extract / concentrate is gently massaged into the skin.

Then my favourite part – the 15 min massage with the Extreme Comfort Cream (night cream). This cream stays on the skin and your Algomega Mask is applied.

This mask will cover your face and the neck and it is left on the skin for 15 min.

Health Watch - IPL – The Answer To Sun Spot Removal IPL is a great treatment for sunspots, as long as you are also an appropriate candidate for the procedure. Good candidates for this treatment are patients with a light – medium dark skin tone and superficial hyper pigmentation. IPL is not an appro-priate treatment for melasma, which is a deeper type of hyper pigmentation. This can actually be worsened by the heat of the IPL, so it is always important that the clinic goes through the correct process to ensure it is the right treatment for you. No treatment should ever be performed without a consulta-tion, a deep look into your medical history and a test patch – this is imperative!

People with dark skin are never happy to hear this but it is worth it!

Generally a series of treatments are required in order to achieve optimal improvement/results but the rate of suc-cess and patient satisfaction is high. These treatments are best performed in winter as it is paramount that you strictly avoid the sun and tanning when undergoing a series of IPL treatments. Avoid sun exposure 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your IPL treatment and wear sunscreen at all times. Impulse light therapy (IPL) can be used on pigmentation on the face, neck, hands, arms and other areas.

What you can expect:

You will notice the sun spots getting darker and then flaking off. It is important to not touch the crusting and allow the natural peeling pro-cess to occur.

How does it work?

The light from the IPL turns from light energy into heat energy. It tar-gets a specific chromophore (colour) in the skin. The wavelengths






Health Watch - IPL – The Answer To Sun Spot Removal used in the particular IPL targets the colouring of the melanin and destroy it. Usually a package is purchased for the treatments.

IPL is a very serious procedure and should be treated as such. IPL practitioners should never be chosen on price alone – but also on their experience and training. I was horrified to discover whilst conducting an interview that a girl who appeared quiet and confident was not a qualified therapist but a doctors clinic clerk.

She was hired as a receptionist, he had her trained to administer IPL, microdermabrasion plus other treatments! She would have had no real knowledge of the skin and the different skin conditions. So just because it is a Dr’s clinic, remember it is not always a Dr who performs the treatment. He just sells it. To be honest, you may not al-ways want a Dr to perform the treatment as his experi-ence may be limited, as I have been directly informed by most IPL distribution companies.

So stay aware and informed – do your homework.

At Le Beau our therapists must have years of experiences as a therapist first and must be a qualified aesthetician, they are then put through a vigorous training program and exam. Even if a new therapist has been trained else-where, they are put through our program and exam, run by Luminous IPL.
