Keep this in mind and find out which meaning is needed from the context around the word.) l’automne (m.) autumn, fall l’hiver (m.) winter le printemps (m.) spring Now that you’ve seen the names of the seasons, remember: they are all

masculine words. However, when you want to say that something happens in a season, you say en été, en automne, en hiver, BUT au printemps.

Pas-à-pas: Exploration II

Le passé compose avec l’auxiliaire être _____ In this section you will learn how to speak about past activities using a small group of verbs (only 17) that express actions related to coming and going, remaining and leaving, or a change of physical place or state. They are called Intransitive Verbs of Motion and always take the conjugated form of être followed by a past participle that agrees in number and gender with the subject (unless that verb has a direct object). Many students memorize them using the acronym DR & MRS VANDERTRAMPP. If that is the case, then we revert to using avoir as an auxiliary with them. Look at this contrast: Je suis sorti(e) à 8 heures. I went out at 8 o’clock. (The subject moved.) J’ai sorti un livre de mon sac à dos. I got out a book from my backpack. (The subject

took an object out of the backpack. Or Je suis passé(e) par la bibliothèque. I went by the library. (The subject moved. Par is a

preposition with la bibliothèque as its object. J’ai passé_ trois semaines en Italie. The trois semaines is what (the time) you spent.

MODULAR ACHIEVEMENT TEST The two parts of the MAT, oral and written, can be completed in any order. _____ Take the written MAT in the Individualized Instruction testing room. Because there is a listening section, you will need to bring headphones to listen to it. You will have as much time as you like to complete the written MAT. You will not need an appointment to take the written section, but you will need one appointment to have it graded. _____ Take the oral MAT by scheduling an appointment with an instructor. Info-culture: La France et son climat (pp. 215-216) 1. France has a moderate and varied climate. 2. The Jura, the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, and the Vosges. 3. The Seine, the Loire, the Garonne, the Rhone, and the Rhine. 4. The north and the west of France. 5. Le climat océanique: Mild and humid winters and frequent rains in all seasons. Le climat continental: More marked contrasts, cold winters, relatively warm summers. Le climat montagnard: Long and very cold winters and abundant snow. Le climat méditerranéen: Very mild winters and warm, dry summers; particularly nice climate, except when the Mistral blows. (The Mistral is a violent wind that blows in the southern part of the Rhone valley.) 6. The other French-speaking countries in Europe have a mild climate, with marked seasons. The climate is affected by latitude (colder and more humid climate in Belgium; warmer and sunnier in the south of France and in Monaco), by the influence of the sea and the ocean (warmer and milder, more humid climate in Brittany; warmer in the summer and colder in the winter in Luxembourg), and by altitude. Switzerland and the French Alps have a mountainous climate with severe winters, glaciers, and eternal snows.

1. The volcanic islands in the DOMs and TOMs are Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion, New

Caledonia, and Tahiti. They are mountainous, and the sides of the mountains are covered with a lush and dense vegetation. The humidity of the climate is lessened by the influence of the sea and the winds, but there are frequently cyclones during the warm season.

2. To the north and along the sides of the Atlas mountains, there is a zone of plains and plateaus in a warm, sunny Mediterranean climate. To the south of the Atlas is the area of the Sahara, an immense desert where it hardly ever rains and the temperature can rise up to 49º C during the day and can fall to 9º C at night.

3. The French-speaking countries of Africa and South America have a subtropical and equatorial climate. In the northern savannah, there are one or two rainy seasons and periods of intense drought. In the dense equatorial forest, heat and humidity are constant. French Guyana is the only French-speaking country in South America.

4. There is a cold, glacial climate. Winters are long and cold with a wide coating of snow that covers the ground for several months. La terre Adélie is in the Antarctic region.

Les pronoms compléments d’objet direct _____ In this section you will learn how to avoid repetition in your speaking and writing. Anyone who progresses beyond just the basics in a language wants to be capable of varying his/her style by using pronouns to replace things or people already spoken about in the previous sentence or clause. The direct object pronouns that you will learn can replace proper nouns or nouns modified in a variety of ways, such as with definite, possessive, or demonstrative articles. The direct object pronouns one uses must always agree in number and gender with the original nouns they replace. Usually they will be placed before the verb of the sentence in which they are found, but when there is both a conjugated verb and an infinitive in the sentence, the direct object pronoun should be placed before the infinitive. Even the brief demonstrative constructions Voici! and Voilà! are considered verbs, so direct object pronouns can precede them as well.

Il faut que, il ne faut pas que, il vaut mieux que, and il vaudrait mieux que are the first of a group of expressions that you will learn to use that communicte these ideas. Although the subjunctive is not another tense, it is a mood, you should learn the new construction just as you would learn a

new tense. The construction is used in the first clause of a two clause sentence. These sentences have three parts: (1) the introductory expression that “runs up a red flag” which tells you that the verb in the clause to follow must be in the subjunctive, (2) the linking word que which ties the two clauses together (which translates as “that”. Unfortunately, we often leave out the “that” in English. It takes attention to detail to remember it in French, at first.) MODULAR ACHIEVEMENT TEST

The two parts of the MAT, oral and written, can be completed in any order. _____ Take the written MAT in the Individualized Instruction testing room. Because there is a listening section, you will need to bring headphones to listen to it. You will have as much time as you like to complete the written MAT. You will not need an appointment to take the written section, but you will need one appointment to have it graded. _____ Take the oral MAT by scheduling an appointment with an instructor.
