Q2 I am interested in serving as a Member at Large forthe AAP Leadership Development and RecognitionCommittee.

Yes

Q3 Please explain the relevant experience, knowledge and skills you possess.

My passion for medical service excellence and teaching stems from a personal experience with poliomyelitis since childhood and a desire to understand its pathophysiology. As I make my way through life’s journey, I have achieved many of my dreams, while striving to learn from my physical challenges and enjoying my family, my chosen profession, my colleagues and the next generation of physicians. As I advanced in my studies, I began to also appreciate the wisdom of the 19th century French moralist and essayist, Joseph Joubert, who said “To teach is to learn twice.” I soon realize that deeper insight into an issue is often derived by teaching about that issue. With better understanding, complex processes such as the delivery of high quality healthcare to the patient and within an integrated system are more likely to be improved.

While I truly believe in the value of rendering high-quality care to the individual patient, I realized early in my professional life the importance of having a broad understanding of healthcare systems. This belief led me to pursue master degrees in public health and business administration. What has become apparent to me is that healthcare systems are ever changing and that the successful practitioners and organizations are the ones that can learn quickly about the new world order and adapt themselves to harmonize with the changes.

Q4 Please explain other association and industry involvement/leadership positions.

I am fortunate to have the privilege of serving on the Public Policy Committee of AAP and as the Editor of Physiatry Forward which is the newsletter of AAP. My first several editorials included topics on advocacy, mentorship, and international rehabilitation.

It is a great honor for me to be serving as the Treasurer in the President's Cabinet of ISPRM which is the global agency for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine that contains over 70 national PM&R societies and over 35 thousand international members. I am the Chairman for ISPRM's Audit and Finance Committee, and the financial reserve of this global organization has nearly doubled during my tenure. I had served as the North and South America Continental Director for ISPRM's International Exchange Committee which coordinates training of Physiatrists across national borders. I also have the honor to serve on other ISPRM’s committees including Educational Committee, Statutes Committee, United Nations Liaison Committee, and Executive Committee.

I also had the honor of being elected by my peers to the Board of Governors of the American Academy of PM&R. I have served as Senior Editor of PM&R, The Journal of Injury, Function and Rehabilitation which is AAPM&R’s official journal. I am currently serving as Pediatric Rehabilitation Editor of PM&R Knowledge NOW.

As Physiatrist-in-Chief of Geisinger Health System and System-wide Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), and Director of Medical Spine Program at the Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute, I have the privilege and honor to work with my fellow clinical and administration colleagues on a variety of programs spanning much of medicine, surgery, and anesthesiology. For example, the collaboration between physiatrists, orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists and internists, have culminated in Geisinger Medical Center being recognized as an Employers Center of Excellence for Spine Surgery by the Pacific Business Group on Health. In addition, I led the efforts of the physiatrists to improve discharge planning by working closely with nursing, therapy and case management staff, and these efforts have resulted in the Department of PM&R being bestowed with the Award for Higher Level of Care and Patient Satisfaction. Since I joined Geisinger, the Department of PM&R’s annual operating net income has achieved nearly a $1 million dollar turnaround.

Prior to joining Geisinger Health System, I had the privilege of serving as the Vice Chairman for Clinical Operations in the Department of PM&R at the University of Pennsylvania Healthcare System, the inaugural Chief Medical Officer of Good Shepherd Penn Partners which encompasses University of Pennsylvania Health System’s Long Term Acute Care Hospital and Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility, Medical Director of the Penn Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine, Medical Director of Good Shepherd Penn Partners Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse, and Vice Chief of Pediatric Physiatry at Children’s Specialized Hospital. While serving as Chief Medical Officer of Good Shepherd Penn Partners at University of Pennsylvania, I established clinical operational procedures that improved patient safety, decrease the rate of unnecessary patient returns to acute care, and contributed to improving the financial status of organization with operating margin that surpassed budget.

I had also served as the Medical Director and the Margaret Milbank Bogert Chairman of Rehabilitation Medicine at the International Center for the Disabled which was formerly called Institute for the Crippled and Disabled where Dr. Howard Rusk originally trained in PM&R in 1940’s. Dr. Rusk is considered by many people as the "Father of Rehabilitation Medicine". When I was at the International Center for the Disabled, I oversaw daily finances of the organization with accountability to both the CEO and Board of Trustees, assisted the CEO in developing realistic and accountable budget, served in the role typical of a Chief Operating Officer, and was appointed by the Board as one of two executives authorized to write checks which at times amount to over $100,000 per check.

My perspective on management and leadership style is that my supervisor, direct reports, and clinical and administrative colleagues are my partners. As a servant leader, I facilitate my partners’ efforts to contribute to our overall team objectives. My partners’ successes are all of our successes. When we work in unison, amazing things happen and we can synergistically overcome whatever barriers we may have previously identified. Our common goals, thus, become that much easier to reach.

I have held various other healthcare leadership positions such as Medical Director of Community Choice Health Plan where I directed health promotion programs for vulnerable populations, and Medical Director for PM&R at St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children where I established the medical program which addressed the pain management needs of the young children and which culminated in a clinical handbook that was distributed to all pediatric hospitals in the United States.

My advocacy efforts included serving as President of the Board of Directors of the Center for the Independence of the Disabled in New York, President of the Board of Directors of the Delaware Valley Stroke Council, President of the New York Society of PM&R, and Member of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of PM&R. When I was the President of the Board of Directors for the Center for the Independence of the Disabled, NY, I improved the financial reserve of the organization by more than two folds, and the reserve when I completed my tenure as President was over $1 million. When I was the President of the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, I turned around the financial status of the organization resulting in 150% increase in net income.

In all of these healthcare leadership roles, I have consistently advocated for patient access to cost effective high quality healthcare.

As I interact with my patients, students, peers and mentors, I realize that there is still much that I can learn. As I believe the foundation of being a good teacher is being a good student, I will continue to teach what I have learned while striving to be a coachable student.

Q5 Please provide a brief statement of why you want to volunteer for this committee:

AAP plays an important role in advocating for physiatrists, the students they train, and the patients they serve. AAP has risen above the national awareness, and the global community of physiatrists has taken notice. The next several years will be critical in the further growth of AAP. Therefore, the development of AAP’s future leadership is of paramount importance. As an academic physiatrist, I cannot think of a more worthwhile endeavor than to lend my support and efforts to the success of the Leadership Development and Recognition Committee in carrying out its mission.
