Thank you for taking the time to review our 2011 Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences (LCBAS) Annual Report. As you will see, we have enjoyed a busy year with many success stories to share.

As a national leader in “Going Green,” Eastern has been at the cutting edge of integrating energy and natural resource savings into every facet of our campus. Likewise, your friends in LCBAS have been a reliable supporter of these efforts, but more than that, we have been leading the way in the integration of clean and renewable energy curriculum within our classroom settings.

As part of these efforts, the School of Technology will offer a concentration in the area of alternative energy and sustainability. The program consists of 15 semester hours taken from courses in a range of topics that will include technical and managerial aspects of alternative energy and sustainability and melds well with the goals of our new Applied Engineering and Technology program.

With the construction of EIU’s new Renewable Energy Center, Eastern has replaced an antiquated coal-fired steam plant with a modern, environmentally friendly facility that burns natural materials like wood chips in the production of steam to heat and cool campus. Likewise, the new Renewable Energy Center itself, complete with an on-site classroom, will offer our students the opportunity to enhance thier learning in the exciting field of renewable and alternative energies.

Providing students with unique learning experiences that expand beyond the classroom setting is what we refer to as “integrative learning,” an important and unique process which focuses on our students, connecting them to “real-world” opportunities and “hands-on” learning that is imperative to their future careers.

Whether by way of our Securities Analysis Center, the Child Development Lab, Commercial Kitchen, our Technology Labs or encouraging students to take part in Study Abroad and Independent Study Programs, your friends in LCBAS are providing students the necessary tools to fully integrate their classroom learning with vital, career-supporting activities outside of the traditional classroom. The Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences is literally leading the way!

As a College, we are proud of the support we receive from our many alumni and friends, without which our programs would lack the strength and vitality they possess. Most importantly, thank you for helping mentor our graduates as they enter the work force. I am both pleased and reassured each time a story is relayed to me of fellow Eastern alumni helping mentor recent graduates in their careers. Remember, every Eastern graduate benefits from the success of fellow alumni, because each success story further substantiates to hiring agents that Eastern is the place to “kick-start” a successful career, thanks in no small part to our emphasis on integrative learning!

Best wishes for the coming year and hold on to your hats; the success we’ve documented in our 2011 annual report is only a precursor of what’s to come!

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD The Distinguished Alumnus Award, first presented in 1973, is the most prestigious award bestowed by the Eastern Illinois University Alumni Association. This award is presented to individuals who have distinguished themselves in either academic or literary fields, business, public service and/or service to the university and who, through their accomplishments and service, have brought prestige to their alma mater. Among the 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipients are two graduates of the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences.

Michael Cunningham ’70, ’73 (Accounting, MBA) Retired as senior vice president and chief financial officer of ING Canada after holding several senior-level positions

with the company, including executive vice president and chief financial officer of ING Americas. The global financial services firm is active in banking, insurance and asset management in 60 countries and has more than 115,000 employees. A U.S. Army veteran, Michael worked for Ernst & Young after graduating from EIU and later served as executive vice president and chief financial officer at Integon before joining ING.

Chuck Witters ’68 (Business Education) Recognized as the top commercial real estate broker in Las Vegas, he joined Lee & Associates in 1984 and has an extensive

background in office marketing, consulting, investment and land sales. He has been an “Active Office” member of the Society of Industrial & Office Realtors for 20 years, served on the SIOR National Board of Directors twice,

and was a nine-year Trustee of the SIOR Foundation. Having served on the board of directors for the Southern Nevada Chapter of NAIOP for seven years, he has been voted the Top Office Broker in Las Vegas by NAIOP eight times. A member of EIU’s capital campaign steering committee, he served as an executive-in-residence for the School of Business.

LOUIS V. HENCKEN ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD The Louis V. Hencken Alumni Service Award, first presented in 1988, is awarded annually by the Eastern Illinois University Alumni Association to alumni who have repeatedly displayed outstanding voluntary service to the university. In 2007 the name was changed to the Louis V. Hencken Alumni Service Award in honor of Eastern’s outgoing president. Lou Hencken served Eastern in a variety of administrative positions for more than 40 years and was named university president on Aug. 1, 2001. He retired from the presidency on June 30, 2007. The 2010 recipient was a graduate of the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences.

Carl Dolson ’76 (Accounting) A partner at McGladrey & Pullen LLP and a managing director of RSM McGladrey, his commitment to EIU

dates to his days as the firm’s recruiting representative at the university in the late ‘80s. Since that time, he has served on both the business advisory and accountancy advisory boards, including serving as chair of the latter from 1996-1998, and was instrumental in the creation of the accountancy board’s endowment fund. In 2009, he was EIU’s Beta Gamma Sigma chapter honoree for his work in the business field.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTAs part of the annual spring commencement ceremonies, Eastern awards honorary degrees to alumni and friends of the university who have excelled in their professional lives, bringing national recognition both to their alma mater and to their field of study. In the spring of 2011, the university selected only one such recipient, and the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences was most pleased that the recipient was one of our very own.

Stephen A. Gosselin ’79 (Finance) As a business leader, philanthropist and volunteer, Mr. Gosselin is a passionate advocate of his alma mater,

Eastern Illinois University. A native of Aurora, Ill., Mr. Gosselin is vice president of the Customer Service Support Division at Caterpillar, Inc., where he is responsible for growing Caterpillar’s aftermarket parts and services business. Mr. Gosselin is a member of the EIU Heritage Society and provides significant support for programs and scholarships. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award and has served on the EIU Alumni Association Board of Directors for six years. In Fall 2010, Mr. Gosselin also served as an executive-in-residence for the School of Business. He currently serves as a board member for the United States Energy Association, and has given time, energy and contributions to the communities in which he has lived. A few of the agencies to which he has given service include the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, United Way of San Diego County, San Diego Center for Children, Community Foundation of Central Illinois and the Greater Illinois Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

FALL 2010 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Alumni and friends of the university are called upon as part of each commencement exercise to provide words of motivation, advice and encouragement. The Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences was delighted that the Fall 2010 Commencement Speaker was a graduate of our Business Education program.

Jim Evans ’68 (Business Education) A 2002 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the EIU Alumni Association, Jim Evans is an acknowledged

industry leader in management and global hospitality. His track record spans 30 years of leadership and a special ability in domestic and international sales and marketing. In his capacity as CEO with Jenny Craig International, he built a leadership team that took the company to unprecedented growth. As president and CEO of Best Western International, Mr. Evans and his team revived the brand and its market position, and led its competitive set the last three years he was CEO. He held a leadership position, focusing on guest and employee satisfaction, revenue growth and market share during Promus Hotel Corporation’s reorganization and operational transition of Embassy Suites and Doubletree. In his sales and marketing tenure with Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, he established international sales offices, and instituted a national accounts and database marketing program that greatly increased revenues. Mr. Evans established Ardent Hospitality Advisors with his partner, Si Sloman, based upon his desire to build a hospitality company founded on heart, passion and strong business principles. Since Ardent’s founding in 2006, Mr. Evans and his team have re-engineered a select group of hotels from positions of critical weakness to significant improvement.

COUNSELING AND CONSULTING The BSC staff, assisted by the Charleston SCORE Chapter, counseled 121 new and existing businesses and nonprofit organizations. This counseling yielded: 13 new business start-ups, one expansion, 72 new jobs and 13 retained jobs. Ten loans were secured and $2,679,500 in capital was raised. Some of the businesses that opened their doors with our assistance were: an obstacle course/amusement park, health food store, IT consulting firm, speculative oil drilling company, financial services firm, online auction company, winery and coffee shop. Some of the services requested included assistance with: feasibility studies, business plans, sales strategies, marketing research, financial analysis, record keeping, licensing/permits, legal designations and patents/trademark assistance. Nonprofit agencies received consulting in: strategic planning, teambuilding, fundraising, business development, historic renovation/restoration and revolving loan fund creation.

YOUTH ENTREPRENEURSHIP A record number, 1,746, of K-12 students participated in our youth programming that promotes entrepreneurship as a viable career option. Programming includes: Camp e3 – energizing emerging entrepreneurs, a three-and-a-half day overnight camp/business pitch competition held at EIU in the summer; Junior Achievement’s

in-class six-session program (Charleston eighth grade); a half-day Clark County Entrepreneurship Workshop (Casey-Westfield, Martinsville and Marshall high schools); and one-hour “Do You Have What It Takes to Be an Entrepreneur?” class (Arcola, Charleston, Dieterich, Effingham, Marshall, Newton, Sacred Heart, St. Anthony, Sullivan and Vandalia). Jeanne Dau spoke at teacher training conferences promoting entrepreneurial experiential learning exercises to business teachers. The BSC also conducted assessments and served on an advisory committee for Effingham County’s Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (CEO) class. Dr. Karen Drage and her students worked with the Charleston Teen Reach Center to participate in National Lemonade Day.

TRAINING The BSC, partnering with EIU Student Volunteer Services, recruited EIU students to help local businesses start a Facebook page in the Facebook 101 training. Other trainings for businesses and nonprofits included: Constant Contact Social Media Training, How to Start a Business and Turning Your Passion Into Profit. Customized trainings included: Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Systems’ Leadership Academy, Medical Staff Academy, Marathon Management 101 and Business Writing, Lincoln Heritage and Post Oaks Flats RC&D Board Development, and School of Business’s Ethics in Motion,

You’re Hired and Capstone Exams. The Consultant Connection, a new peer-to-peer networking group, has met bi-monthly to promote learning in an informal environment. Lawyers, consultants, insurance agents and social media experts shared their knowledge with interested business owners. Global Entrepreneurship Week was celebrated in November with many activities on campus. The “Going Global: See How it is Done” presentation by Bill Lada and World Trade Illinois, was one of the programs scheduled. Also, a crowd of potential angel investors and venture capitalists gathered for the second annual Prairie Spark Regional Investment Forum to hear business pitches from Nuvixa, Lamboo Inc., Midwest Reclamation and Excavation and Jangee Venture, LLC. A total of 1,010 people participated in the trainings listed above.

CHEERLEADING AND CHAMPIONING ENTREPRENEURSHIPA record crowd attended the BSC/SCORE Breakfast highlighting Karen Wolters, founder of Ignite USA, who spoke on the topic, “It is Never Too Late to Start a Business.” Director Jeanne Dau was awarded the Dreamers and Doers Award from the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) and the Oklahoma State University School of Entrepreneurship at the Experiential Classroom XI.

COLLEGE OUTREACHEconomic gardening or “growing our own entrepreneurs” is the goal of Eastern Illinois University’s Business Solutions Center, the outreach arm of the College’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. In our third year, we have found new ways to champion entrepreneurship and positively impact the economy in east-central Illinois. Director Jeanne Dau, Counselor Stan Thurman and Office Manager Jennifer Zuniga are very fortunate to collaborate with a record number of 95 volunteers, 41 financial partners and many more strategic partners as we strive to assist new startup enterprises, expand or retain existing businesses, strengthen nonprofits and provide relevant business training. We rely heavily on feedback from our clients and two advisory boards to ensure entrepreneurial support services meet the ever-changing community needs.

INTEGRATIVE LEARNINGIn the School of Business, we consider integrative learning to have been one of our strengths for some time. Our students are provided with appropriate subject content within each course, and they are also presented with a wide range of extra-curricular and professional development opportunities that encourage them to assimilate their learning experiences within the classroom with those outside the classroom. Our students have these opportunities available to them because of the generous support of our donors. We are grateful to them for their support.

DISTINGUISHED SPEAKERSThe School of Business Executive-in-Residence Program brings executives and entrepreneurs together with students. In the fall semester, Mr. Steve Gosselin, Vice President of Customer Services Support for Caterpillar, Inc., served as an executive-in-residence. In the spring semester, Ms. Judy Ethell, Operating Partner at Thompson Street Capital Partners, visited campus as an executive-in-residence.

The School of Business was proud to sponsor events in celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week in November. Mr. Bill Skeens, Founder and President of Prairie City Bakery, presented, “From Dorm Room Start-up to the Official Cookie of the Chicago Cubs and Beyond.” In addition, Mr. Mike Yager, CEO and founder of Mid-America Motorworks, talked about his success in his presentation titled, “From Local Entrepreneur to Global Enterprise.”

As part of the Bertrand P. Holley Business Ethics and Social Responsibility Series, author and speaker Mr. Justin Paperny visited campus and held two presentations that were open to the public: “Lessons from Prison” and “Ethics in Motion.” Additionally, Mr. Paperny visited several School of Business classes while on campus, in order to discuss topics related to business ethics.

The third annual Young Professionals Series was held in the spring. The program is a professional development tool designed to provide students with practical advice from recent EIU School of Business alumni. This year, the

Dr. Patrick Lach, Assistant Professor of Finance, received an Excellence in the Use of Technology Award for his use of technology in the classroom. This award was given by the university’s Center for Academic Technology Support (CATS).

School of Business welcomed the following alumni back to campus as part of the Young Professionals Series: Jenna Anderson, Account Manager at PMT Advertising/Dealer HD; Jennifer Clement, Finance Trainee at State Farm; Caleb Freeman, Owner/Lead Consultant at Freeman-Richards Consulting; Marina Goldshteyn, Marketing Coordinator at Crate & Barrel Corporate Headquarters; Alex Guttosch, Membership Adviser at the Lakeshore Sport & Fitness Club; Barbara Moore, Tax Analyst at State Farm; Elias Sahyouni, Client Server Support Analyst at Country Financial; Ryan Zarlengo, Manager of Sports Services for the Chicago White Sox; and Tony Zipparro, Co-founder of the Local Lister.

EXCELLENCE IN OUR BUSINESS STUDENT ORGANIZATIONSThe Student Financial Planning Association participated in the second annual Financial Planning Day, which is rotated between Eastern Illinois University and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. This year the event was hosted by UIUC. The Student Financial Planning Association also hosted a Finance Alumni Roundtable event through EIU’s School of Business to welcome alumni with finance degrees back to campus to share their expertise with our current students.

Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) sent six members to the Illinois HR Games, where the EIU team earned first place. In February, six members and two sponsors of EIU’s Student Chapter of SHRM traveled to Dekalb, Ill., to participate in the

annual Illinois HR Games and Conference, hosted by Northern Illinois University. Two MIS students who are members of EIU’s chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), brought home a second-place finish in the COBOL competition from the National Collegiate Conference in Orlando, Fla. The chapter also co-hosted the event. The Association of Information Technology Professionals was named the winner of the “Region 5 Outstanding Student Chapter Award” for 2009-2010. This award is a testament to the dedication and efforts of the members of AITP.

EIU’s chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) was

also recognized for its excellence. At the 50th annual Marketing Conference held in St. Louis, Mo., in February 2011, EIU’s AMA chapter was awarded the Dik Twedt AMA Student Chapter Award for the second consecutive year. This is the top award at the conference and recognizes the EIU American Marketing Association student chapter as outstanding in all areas.

Beta Alpha Psi students continued their partnership with the Embarras Volunteer Service. For the past seven years, these two organizations have partnered to hold service days in which members of Beta Alpha Psi visit local nature preserves, centers and state parks to assist with clean-up and maintenance efforts. in Indianapolis, Ind., and officers attended the national meeting in San Jose, Calif. Members of EIU’s School of Business Student Investment Society attended the 2011 R.I.S.E. (Redefining Investment Strategy Education) Investment Forum that was held in March. The Student Investment Society took First Place in the Core Investment Style category at the competition.

ALUMNI RECOGNITIONThe School of Business 2010 Distinguished Alumnus was Mr. Richard Levi, Founder and CEO of Levi, Ray, and Shoup (LRS) which provides information technology solutions to a wide variety of organizations.

Mr. Steve Gosselin (’79) was honored as the Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter Honoree at the recent member induction ceremony. Mr. Gosselin was also recognized by the university with an Honorary Degree in Public Service at the spring commencement ceremony, as a business leader, philanthropist, volunteer and advocate for his alma mater. He is currently the Vice President of Customer Services Support at Caterpillar, Inc.

Three School of Business alumni were recognized by the EIU Alumni Association for their accomplishments and support of Eastern. Michael Cunningham (‘70, ‘73) and Chuck Witters (‘68) were honored as 2010 Distinguished Alumni. The Distinguished Alumni Award is the most prestigious award bestowed by the EIU Alumni Association to recognize outstanding

accomplishments and service. Additionally, Mr. Carl Dolson (‘76) was the recipient of the 2010 Louis V. Hencken Alumni Service Award in recognition of his long-term and continuous service to the School of Business and the university.

We congratulate our alumni for being recognized for their extraordinary talents, successes in their chosen fields, and service to EIU and the School of Business.

FACULTY RECOGNITIONFive faculty members joined the School of Business this year. Kesha Coker, Ph.D., Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and David Fleming, Ph.D., University of South Florida-Tampa, joined the Marketing faculty. Yoshie Lord, Ph.D., Temple University, and Richard Wang, Ph.D., Victoria University of Wellington, became members of the Accountancy faculty. James Sysko, J.D., Widener University School of Law, joined the Management faculty, specializing in Business Law and Ethics.

Additionally, Marko Grünhagen, Ph.D., was named the Lumpkin Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship. Dr. Grünhagen is currently a member of the Marketing faculty; in his new role, he has taken the reins of the Entrepreneurship minor and has built membership in the School of Business entrepreneurship student organization.

Several faculty members were recognized at the university level for their achievements. Dr. Patrick Lach, Assistant Professor of Finance, received an “Excellence

in the Use of Technology” award for his use of technology in the classroom. This award was given by the University’s Center for Academic Technology Support (CATS). Dr. Marko Grünhagen, Lumpkin Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship, was honored as a 2010 recipient of a University Achievement and Contribution Award in the area of service. In addition, Ms. Vicki Hampton received the EIU Student Government’s Distinguished Professor Award for Academic Support.

Two faculty-led study abroad trips were held this year. Dr. David Boggs and Dr. Patrick Lach led the annual summer trip to Maastricht, the Netherlands. Additionally, Dr. Marko Grünhagen took a group of students to China. In total, 29 students participated in faculty-led study abroad trips in the School of Business.

Dr. Laura Lucia Palacios, Assistant Professor in the Department of Business Management, from the University of Zaragoza in Spain, served as a visiting scholar in the School of Business at Eastern Illinois University during the Fall 2010 semester.

Ms. Carolyn Woolever, a familiar face in the classroom and on campus, retired in December 2010. Ms. Woolever was a devoted instructor teaching family courses for more than 13 years. Her favorite teaching assignment was the Elderhostel program that was offered during summer session. She particularly enjoyed interacting with the participants whose ages ranged through the life

cycle. Often students sought out courses she taught, such as Family Relationships, Child Development and Death and Dying. In addition to teaching, Ms. Woolever secured funds from both the Redden grants and Winkelblack Family Fund grants to use toward teaching. Ms. Woolever is enjoying her retirement. Her time has been occupied with church activities, visits to her four grown children and enjoying her eight grandchildren. Life doesn’t get any better than that!

RELAY FOR LIFE2011 marks the sixth year that the School of Family and Consumer Sciences faculty and students have participated in the EIU -- Relay for Life campaign hosted on the EIU campus. Dr. Kathleen O’Rourke is the driving force behind the organized efforts to heighten awareness of cancer and raise money for cancer research. Dr. O’Rourke first got involved in the spring of 2005 and quickly engaged FCS students and faculty to get involved, too. She targeted students in the various FCS organizations and it paid off. In fact, student involvement has grown such that the School of Family and Consumer Sciences now has two teams: Team FCS and the Student Dietetic Association Team. Each

team is comprised of 12 students and various faculty members. Dr. O’Rourke was honored to be the keynote speaker at the most recent event, speaking on cancer survivorship and cancer awareness. She was also involved with the Cancer Survivor Dinner in early April which drew in 30 participants from campus and the Charleston community.

STUDENT AWARDDue to a generous donation from Visa, the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer presented a brand new Apple laptop valued at $1,200 to the School of Family and Consumer Sciences to award to a deserving student. To qualify as a recipient, the students had to have an interest in teaching personal finance and consumer economics at the high school level. To apply, students were required to submit an innovative lesson plan or curricular tool that would aid in the instruction of personal finance topics, including investing, budgeting, risk management, planning for career or college, saving and retirement. Valerie Zentmyer was the recipient of the laptop.

Ms. Kathy Rhodes is one of those people. Ms. Rhodes received the Office of Academic and Professional Development Director’s Award in April 2011, which was presented by The School of Continuing Education. The award is a reflection of outstanding leadership and service to the Office of Academic and Professional Development in the areas of credit and non-credit programming. During the summer, Ms. Rhodes teaches through The School of Continuing Education, including a Children’s Cooking Academy, and coordinates Italian cooking courses and wine-tasting courses with Italian faculty from the Culinary Institute in Florence, Italy.

FOODS LABWhile the renovated quantity foods lab was functional and passed inspection by the Illinois Department of Public Health in the summer of 2010, the lab was missing several large pieces of equipment. But that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirit; instead, the students were thrilled to be the first to use the lab and it turned out to be a great year. Additional lab renovations continue to move forward. During the past year, funds were provided to build an office flanked with two large windows of commercial glass for observation. One window allows the faculty inside the office to observe students in the kitchen. The second window allows the faculty and students an area to observe into a space that will eventually be the dining area. In addition to purchasing small wares, such as regular and perforated hotel pans, braziers and dining room supplies, a convection oven, combi oven and tilt skillet were ordered and will be installed once they arrive.

PEACE MEALThe mission of Peace Meal Senior Nutrition Program is to provide

quality meals for healthier lives. The program seeks to help senior citizens improve their nutrition, sustain their independence and enhance the quality of their life by providing meals, fellowship and connections to other needed services. A budget of more than $2.8 million is raised from various grants and donations to provide 1,600 meals daily to more than 70 sites in 14 counties. Services include home-delivered meals, congregate meals, nutrition education, needs assessment and outreach. Sites utilize more than 1,200 volunteers each year for the provision of meals and services. Peace Meal is particularly proud of the implementation of innovative programs in recent years, including Soup and Salad Bars and Restaurant Programs. These programs have helped draw new people to Peace Meal while still meeting the needs of our long-term clients.

ABC PROGRAM Interest in the Alternative Bachelor’s for Child Care Education Program (ABC Program) increased significantly in 2010. Inquiries nearly tripled from academic year 2009. Currently, 16 students are enrolled in the program. Five additional courses were approved for online delivery in 2010 for a total of 12 online courses.

STUDENT RESEARCHThe School of Family and Consumer Sciences continues to collaborate with the California Raisin Marketing Board (CRMB). Dr. Painter is the Director of Nutrition Research and is responsible for overseeing all research sponsored by the CRMB. This past academic year, the California Raisin Board hired a graduate dietetic student, Jill Barnes, to assist with promoting the health benefits of raisins by

planning and manning display booths at various food shows. She had three abstracts selected for poster presentations at the American Dietetic Association’s annual meeting regarding raisin research. The first poster shows the new analysis methods for fiber and that raisins now provide 10 percent of the daily requirement. This is important because raisins may now make a health claim on the packages. The other two research projects will display the antioxidant content of raisins and the cholesterol-lowering effect of raisins. Raisins have been incorrectly listed as a choking hazard which has discouraged many organizations from recommending them to children. Jill was instrumental in convincing some very influential organizations to reverse their position and remove raisins as a choking hazard. Two of the organizations were the Mayo Clinic and the New York Health Department.

The graduate dietetic student research this year has focused on increasing dairy consumption. Sarah Knoll wrote a paper on the nutrient content of flavored milk that will be published on the National Dairy Council’s online blog. Sarah, along with Melanie Horstmann and Jamie Merritt, conducted research on the effect of increasing cup and bowl size on dairy consumption. Their subjects were preschool children in our Child Development lab, college students and faculty and staff. They found that by increasing the cup and bowl size, the students drank more milk and ate more yogurt. These results are also being presented at the American Dietetic Association’s national meeting.

TRANSITIONThe past year was a year of transition and change for the School of Technology. In September 2010, Dr. Mahyar Izadi, chairperson of the School of Technology since 1999, became interim dean of the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences and Dr. Deborah

Woodley became interim chair of the School of Technology. Effective July 1, 2011, Dr. Izadi assumed the duties of dean, officially removing the “interim” from his title.

ACCREDITATION The Applied Engineering and Technology program completed a successful site visitation from its accrediting body, the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE). The accreditation team report provided excellent feedback in advance of and in preparation for the Board of Accreditation hearings in November 2011, at the ATMAE Convention. Dr. Wafeek Wahby is commended for his leadership in the re-accreditation process.

Also receiving re-accreditation this year from the National Council on Accreditation of Teacher’s Education (NCATE) is the School of Technology’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. All three areas of the program were re-accredited: business, family and consumer sciences, and applied engineering and technology.

During April’s ATMAE accreditation team visit, a special luncheon honored donors to the School of

Technology Future Fund. To date, five rooms have been named within Klehm Hall, with on-going efforts to secure the support of additional room namings. We gratefully acknowledge Roy and Helen Price, who named a room in honor of their late son, Dr. James D. Price (74, 77); Dr. Janet Triechel (64, 71); Ross (87) and Cindy McCullough; and Eastern alumni working at the Colcon Corporation in Sullivan, Ill. - Mike Mitchell (69, 79), Gina Vieback Spinner (83), Jeff Mitchell (98) and Christie Jasper Wright (78). The McCulloughs also named a room in honor of former SOT faculty member Dr. Tom Waskom and his late wife, Lou Ann Waskom.

RENOVATIONDuring the winter semester break, faculty and staff in the school worked closely with Facilities Planning and Management personnel to complete an extensive renovation of School of Technology classrooms and labs. Floors were re-furbished, walls painted, signage was improved, and old or unusable equipment was removed.

the scientific community. The School of Technology has responded to this issue by developing a new concentration in the Applied Engineering and Technology undergraduate program. The concentration in Alternative Energy and Sustainability, as well as courses to support this concentration, were approved by the Council on Academic Affairs in January 2011. These include courses in sustainable construction, energy technology and alternative energy systems.

RENEWABLE ENERGY CENTERDr. Ping Liu has been especially active in providing leadership across campus that links the School of Technology, along with other academic programs, to Eastern’s new Renewable Energy Center, the new power plant that replaces Eastern’s steam power plant from the 1920s and utilizes biomass for power generation. Dr. Liu’s efforts culminated in late Spring 2011, when the Illinois Board of Higher Education approved a new research unit at Eastern – the Center for Clean Energy Research and Education. The center will focus on educational activities related to renewable and clean energy.

Dr. Liu was also instrumental in obtaining a grant from the Charleston Area Charitable Foundation that will fund the purchase of a laboratory-scale gasifier that can drive an internal combustion engine and electrical generator. The grant also helped purchase a gas chromatograph (GC) to be used to analyze the syngas from the gasifier as well as the gasifiers in the Renewable Energy Center.

INTEGRATIVE LEARNINGThe School of Technology also received the 2010-2011 Provost’s Award for Integrative Learning. The purpose of the award is to recognize departmental efforts to advance integrative learning within a degree program. Integrative learning entails helping students make connections to other coursework, other activities and other experiences and then intentionally, thoughtfully and regularly reflecting on them. The Provost’s Award was granted to the School of Technology because of the thoughtful way classroom instruction and lab experiences are interwoven in many of the Applied Engineering and Technology concentrations, as well as the Organizational and Professional Development program.

Students in Career and Technical Education have also been involved in integrative learning that connects the classroom with the larger community. Business education students worked with a local community program, Teen Reach, to implement an entrepreneurship program. Students in CTE 3400 worked with students at Mattoon High School, Charleston Middle School, Junior Achievement and the Boy Scouts on a variety of collaborative projects and programs.

TECHNOLOGYThe Organizational and Professional Development (OPD) program, which was approved last year to offer its program online, received the “Excellence in the Use of Technology” Award at Eastern’s Technology Day celebration. In granting the award, the Center for Academic Technology Support said, “The OPD program exemplifies EIU’s mission of providing accessible

undergraduate education and has been a leader in incorporating technology to achieve that goal.” Enrollments in this program continue to grow. The program currently has approximately 130 majors.

STUDENT RESEARCHThe second annual School of Technology student research symposium was held Dec. 2, 2010. Eleven undergraduate and graduate students presented on a variety of research topics, including Speech Signal Analysis, Facial Recognition Systems Analysis, RFID Use in Firearm Safety, Sustainable Home Heating and Cooling, Performance Analysis of Voice VPN, Quality Systems Manual and Implementation of Laboratory Practices in Advanced Concepts of Computer Networks.

M.S. IN TECHNOLOGYThe School of Technology’s Master of Science in Technology program has grown to become the largest graduate program on campus with more than 150 students enrolled. A new off-campus program was begun in the Chicago area during 2010-2011. Students in this Chicago-area cohort program work in different companies in the Chicago area. Courses are taught at University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign’s outreach center in Oak Brook and combine both face-to-face instruction and online course activities.

David Melton and Diana Wyatt were selected to participate in the Faculty Summer Technology Institute at UI/UC.

Rigoberto Chinchilla was selected for the 2010 William G. Kirk International Leadership Award. EIU International Programs selects a faculty member each year who exemplifies significant leadership in the internationalization of the EIU campus.

Dr. Kaninika Bhatnagar was elected to serve as vice president of the women in technology division of ATMAE.

STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTSJorge Zetino received the Outstanding International Student Award.

Aaron Melton and Edward Karr, representing the School of Technology’s on-campus and off-campus student groups, received the Distinguished Graduate Student Awards.

Ali Langston, a student in the Master of Science in Technology Chicago-cohort program, is recipient of the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholars Program, which pays all tuition costs for the 1,000 outstanding minority students who are selected each year through what Langston called a “really intensive” application process. For his master’s thesis, Langston is focusing on identifying barriers sleep apnea patients encounter in their use of continuous positive airway pressure devices, commonly known as CPAP machines.

ROTCArmy Reserve Officers Training Corps focuses on Leadership Development to encourage a young man or woman to become the best leader they can be. Utilizing an integrative approach that combines classroom and practical application labs, internship opportunities with active and reserve component Army units, and additional cultural awareness programs, the EIU ROTC program has achieved exemplary results this year.

PANTHER BATTALIONThe Panther Battalion theme in 2010-2011 was “A New Challenge for a New Leader,” to instill critical thinking and ethical decision-making into the cadets and to commission the best qualified lieutenant possible. This quality over quantity approach starts with our enrollment campaign, seeking that young man and woman who is a scholar, athlete and leader. Yet even more, that they have the drive to develop leadership skills and live a life of active service to their community, state and nation.

The Military Science Department has continued its quality improvements and they are reflected in the achievements of the cadets and the department. The cadets worked hard, more than a third of the total battalion making the commitment to contract with the intent to become an Army officer. Scholarship has improved, having 11 cadets on the Dean’s List, more than in the last 10 years. Our athletic scores, measured in the Army Physical Fitness Test, are in the upper 20 percent of all ROTC programs in the nation. And we have been recognized once again by the national Army ROTC program with awards in the RECONDO competition, Ranger Challenge competition, and one cadet receiving both the George C. Marshall award and the Distinguished Military Graduate.

In August 2010, the EIU Military Science Department-Panther Battalion began the school year with a Welcome Back Recognition Event. The purpose of this event was to recognize the accomplishments of the returning seniors from Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) held at Fort Lewis, Wash., over the summer. LDAC, also known as Operation Warrior Forge, is the final training hurdle for our cadets before commissioning. This year, Cadet Kevin Liscovitz completed LDAC with an overall performance assessment of Excellence, the highest that can be awarded. We also brought back recent alumni and recognized them for their recent commissioning as second lieutenants in the US Army: Chris McLennand, Amber Nyara and Lance Spear.

LEADERSHIP On campus throughout the year, cadets received in-classroom leadership training augmented with practical exercises every Thursday afternoon during their Leadership Lab outside on campus grounds. This hands-on approach to training not only engaged our cadets in the practical skills necessary for success as a future Army officer, but more

importantly, put our cadets in leadership positions. Some lab highlights this year included rappelling and U.S. weapons familiarization at the Charleston Police and Fire Facility, small unit tactics on campus, individual soldier skills such as land navigation at Fox Ridge State Park, drill and ceremony, and water survival at the Charleston Rotary Club pool. We reinforced small unit tactics through a paintball course in September 2010 and April 2011, and continued with our aviation lab training our cadets on helicopter operations to include a fly-over of nearby Mattoon. The leadership skills honed in lab not only prepared cadets who completed the program to be effective Army officers, but developed all participants to be effective, contributing members of society and citizens ready to take on leadership roles in the civilian sector.

CHALLENGEThe Panther Battalion annually participates in several off-campus training events to include two field training exercises, the Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition, and many summer internship opportunities. The annual Fall Field Training Exercise (FTX) was a weekend trip held at the Illinois National Guard Training Area at Camp Marceilles, Ill. More than 50 cadets spent the weekend experiencing first-hand Army training and building esprit de corps through challenging activities such as rappelling, land navigation and a world-class confidence course. This FTX also served to prepare our juniors for LDAC. Their performance at LDAC, combined with their performance here on campus, prepares them for their first occupational assignment upon commissioning.

The Brigade level Ranger Challenge Competition this year was also at Camp Marcielles. The Panther Battalion fielded THREE Ranger Teams! Led by Cadets Kevin Liscovitz, Ryan Owen and Daniel Miller, the Panther Battalion competed against more than 40 other ROTC teams. This competition is the Military Science varsity sport, where teams

compete against the clock in events such as rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, one-rope bridge building, grenade throw, land navigation, and culminating in a 12-mile road march. The Panthers demonstrated they were as good as any of the larger schools, and returned to campus with three first-place event streamers -- two in the First Aid Relay and one for Land Navigation.

SPRING FTXThe Military Science annual Spring FTX is a joint exercise with other schools in the region. In April, Panther Battalion joined UIUC and ISU at Camp Atterbury, Ind., to mirror the challenges cadets will face at LDAC and provide an opportunity for cadets from different schools to come together and train. Opportunity to simulate the LDAC experience in both size of the unit and events to execute helped ensure there would be no surprises when cadets arrive at Ft. Lewis this summer. This weekend of hard training and evaluation showed that the skills developed by the cadets over the past year in the classroom and during the laboratory experience were taking hold.

BATAAN MARCHThis year, the Panther Battalion focused our cultural awareness event on the 22nd annual Bataan Memorial Death March. A team of five cadets led by Master Sergeant Eric Klinedinst trained around Charleston to march 20+ miles with a 40-pound rucksack! Travelling to Las Cruzes, New Mexico, in March 2011, the team then participated in a 26-mile ruck march over mountains and desert to memorialize the Death March American and Philippine soldiers were forced to make after the surrender of Bataan at the start of World War II. Teams from a dozen countries also participated and mingled with the cadets. Our team finished in 8 hours and 54 minutes!

COMMUNITY SERVICEAlong with training, community service events are part of the Military Science core values and integrative learning. To

support service to the community, we conducted multiple Team Building Exercises for local organizations like Boy’s State, Girl’s State and local schools. In these exercises, cadets run stations challenging students to think through a hands-on problem as a team, solve it and execute the solution. We hosted the Junior ROTC programs of East Richland and Mattoon High Schools, visiting them at their schools and bringing them to campus to see the university, Senior ROTC training and university life. We participated in community education nights representing the university and the department at local high school and community colleges’ College Fairs and Financial Aid Nights. At Homecoming and Tailgating, we provided a HMMWV float for the parade, set up an ROTC alumni table in the LCBAS tent, and, with the assistance of National Guard and Reserve units, ran the biggest

alcohol-free event in the tailgating area which provided games and static displays to entertain visitors. In the spring semester, the Panther Battalion executed two capstone events -- the annual Awards Ceremony and annual Military Ball. The Awards Ceremony identified excellence in academics and training, and recognized worthy cadets with awards from the Military Science Department, civic, community and military organizations. The Military Ball was held at the University Grand Ballroom. The theme continued the “New Challenge for a New Leader” and emphasized military traditions and camaraderie, culminating in a farewell to the seniors. The evening was highlighted by good food, dancing and an inspiring message by our guest speaker, Colonel (Retired) Jill Morganthaler, a Reserve Ambassador who has also worked with the Illinois governor on Homeland Security and

even confronted Saddam Hussein at the former dictator’s trial.

This school year the Panther Battalion commissioned nine cadets -- Second Lieutenants Jessica Paetz, Kevin Liscovitz, Christopher Bond, Roy Peregrine, Jason Lemmerman, Lauren Viverito, Joseph Cromwell, Drew Weaver and Bradlee Davis -- into the U.S. Army Reserves, National Guard and active duty forces.

TRAINING CAMPS AND SCHOOLSLast summer, we had a great opportunity to send cadets to Army schools and camps. Seven cadets participated in LDAC at Ft. Lewis, and we are sending nine this year.

Five cadets completed the Leadership Training Camp (LTC) at Ft. Knox, Ky. LTC is a camp designed for those cadets who have not completed two years of ROTC as freshmen and sophomores, and is intended to jump start the information needed by a cadet from those two years into six weeks. While high adventure and creating a sense of community beyond a single university, this is an intense camp for our cadets. And we’re sending five more cadets this summer!

The ROTC internships with Army Schools and units provide our cadets with valuable skills and the opportunity to excel. This year we were able to send two cadets to Air Assault School, and one to Airborne School. We also have 11 cadets training simultaneously with the ROTC and the National Guard or Reserves, receiving valuable on-the-job training as a lieutenant.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION HIGHLIGHTSThe Leadership Excellence Club is a service organization that all cadets and their supporters are invited to participate. They remained busy this year, participating in many events from welcoming students to campus at their residence halls to handing out poppies for the local VFW during Veterans Day.

They again gathered food and goods for care packages to deployed soldiers on behalf of the VFW Auxiliary and WEIU, and worked hand-in-hand with the Student Veterans at Eastern to promote a week of armed forces awareness this spring called Project Hero. In addition to an American Red Cross Blood Drive, the main event that the Leadership Excellence Club is responsible for the annual Pancake Breakfast hosted at the local VFW during Family Weekend; they plan for and prepare a breakfast for visiting parents and community members alike. LEC president this year was Roy Peregrine.

The Scabbard and Blade Society performed all Color Guards, presenting our nation’s colors at sporting events, parades and ceremonies on campus. The society has been very active in promoting Army values to the university, as well as the community at-large. Their biggest event was the annual Veterans Day Recognition ceremony on campus. This event was flawlessly executed by patriotic and motivated cadets in honor of university and community veterans. Guest speakers included EIU President William Perry and Eastern student Anna Boehlefeld, with narration by ROTC student Cadet Joseph Cromwell.Student Veterans at Eastern (SVE) is another service organization that is open

to veterans of the U.S. armed forces, as well as their friends and supporters. Working closely with the Military Science Department and the Eastern Illinois University Veteran’s Affairs Department, SVE works to promote awareness of a veteran’s unique challenges in retuning to an academic institution, and to provide a venue of continuing service to the community. SVE this year supported many service events to include care package food drives for deployed servicemen and women, working with Habitat for Humanity, and supporting the EIU Veterans Day ceremony. The SVE President this year was Joe Bartholemew.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTSSenior Cadet Forum this year included alumni Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Rob Foster, Major Alan Rogers, and First Lieutenant (P) Caleb Crouch, as well as Major Arthur Fager, who had a candid talk with the seniors about what it is like to be the newest officer in a unit. More than 50 years of officership experience!

Captain Pollard and his CH-47 crew from Peoria, Ill., found their way to campus to provide information on aviation and aircraft loading and take-off operations for the battalion.
