MORE 'SWEEPERS FOR R.A.N. The Go"ernmenl has approved the acquisition of

two sccond·hand tugs to undertake minesweeping duties (o r the Royal AWilralian Navy.

The Millister fOT Defence . Senator Rober! Ray. announced the contract was signed on April 18. 1990.

The lugs. 10 be purchased this year. lOo'ould be used 10 tow the new 'clifHlll' sweeps designed and developed by the ROY31 AuSlroliun Na~y Research Labom\orics in Sydney and the Mmerial Research laboratory in Melbourne.

The RAN has been using "three fishi ng trawlers, atquired in 1988.10 develop the tactics and doctrine 10 be used in the opera tion of the new s""ccping equipment.

These trawlers arc no t powerful enough 10 lOW Ihe large 5weeps, hence the requirement for the lUgs.

Sellator Ray said that ··because the walers in which we could need to counU:r mines vary in their eharacteristics.

The Government afforded a high priority to the development of a capable mine counte rmeasures fo rce that would ensure Ih1.t major port s could be kept open.
