Focus: Listening and Speaking

Objective(s): By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:i. associate the letter ‘k’ with the sound /k/;ii.say the sound /k/ correctly; andiii. talk about a stimulus with guidance.

Time: 30/60 minutes

Teaching Aid(s): powerpoint; picture cards, composite picture (farm)

Cross Curricular Element(s): Multiple Intelligences

Introduction:

a. Greet pupils.b. Pupils reply.

Set Induction:

a. Group the pupils. b. Distribute jigsaw puzzle cards. (Appendix 1)c. Pupils arrange the cards to form a picture.d. Guide pupils to identify the picture. e. Say the words and pupils repeat. Get pupils to

identify the initial sound /k/.

Step 1:

a. Revise the phoneme /k/. b. Get pupils to recall the action for /k/.c. Demonstrate how to sound it out: • You can feel the sound in the back of your mouth. • It sounds a bit like /g/ but when you say /k/, you can feel air coming out from your mouth.d. Instructpupilstoimagineflyingakiteandsay/k/.e. Pupils trace the letter and say /k/.f. Get pupils to say /k/ is also for ‘k’.

Step c:Ask pupils to observe you. Do it a few times

to different groups.

Step e: Pupils may trace letter in the air,

Step a: Use realia if possible.

a. Show pictures of kitten, key and kite. b. Pupils name the things they see.c. Get pupils to repeat the words.

Step 3:

a. Place the pictures face-down on a table in front of the class.b. Say a word and get pupils to pick the correct picture.c. Pupil will hold the card up and say the word aloud. d. Get the class to read all the words together.

Consolidation:

a. Say words with /m/ and /k/ sounds. b. Pupils tick the words with the /k/ sound on page 75 in their module.

Set Induction:

the action. d. Read the words again and pupils repeat.

Step 1:

a. Show two masks of kittens and introduce them as Kip and Kit. (Appendix 3)b. Talk about the kittens with the pupils. c. Put up the rhyme ‘Two little kittens’. (Appendix 4)d. Read and pupils listen to pronunciation.e. Repeat the rhyme and pupils follow.

Step 2:
