WINTER 2013

THE EPIscoPal DIocEsE of aRIZoNa

Established in 1959, The Episcopal Diocese of Arizona has 25,000 members in 12,500 households in more than 60 congregations. We are part of The Episcopal Church and the worldwide Anglican Communion.

By now we have all probably heard the old joke, “How many Episcopalians does it take to change a light bulb?” The answer? “Five. One to change the bulb

and four to say, ‘That is not the way we used to do it.’” Point well taken. We Episcopalians don’t have a lot of tolerance for change. Maybe that is because we (rightly!) value our rich tradition, steeped in history and heavily influenced by the best in literature, art, and music of past times. But that same resistance to change can also hold us back from responding to the challenges that an ever more fast-paced and complex culture present us. The result, as we all know by now, is that the Episcopal Church has become, much like other Christian denominations, an aging and declining denomination.

As we begin the new calendar year, it would be good for us to remind ourselves that our faith is founded, not on the past, but on the future. We believe in a God who entered history in a sudden, earth-changing way in Jesus Christ, and that through the Holy Spirit, God consistently proves Himself as one who “makes all things new.” As theologian Leonard Sweet points out, for a Christian, “The future is our default time-zone.” Our hope comes from the expectation that no matter what kind of a mess we find ourselves in, personally or collectively, or even as an institu-tional church, God can still remake us, reshape us, and recreate us.

E-PISTLE: FacIng ThE FuTurE

Of course, we as disciples have our own role to play in that process. We have to be open to God’s future plans. If we spend all of time complain-ing over change, or carping because “the church of today is not the one we grew up in,” then we deserve to become increasingly marginalized by our culture, a kind of cult of pretty liturgies and tepid charity, a spiritual museum piece.

If, in contrast, we maintain an at-titude of openness and experimenta-tion, listening in our hearts to what God has in store for us, and not being afraid to take chances, then we can expect to grow and flourish.

As I make visits around our Diocese, I see both attitudes at work. I en-counter both fear of change, as well as many examples of congregations

courageously and faithfully stepping out into the future.

You are reading this in the month of January, named after the Roman god, Janus. Janus was the deity who guarded the doorway of the house. Since he was believed to protect people, both in their coming and going, he was often portrayed as having two faces, one facing forward and one backwards. We are at the point in our calendar, and in the life of the church, when we face in both directions. We remember the accom-plishments of the year gone by, but more importantly, we make those “New Year’s resolutions,” about what we hope to accomplish in the future. And we will accomplish those things, “with God’s help.”

I found this great picture to the left posted on Facebook during Advent, but its message is also one for the New Year.

May this be a time for us of new beginnings, a New Year of being faithful and future-oriented followers of Christ.

By NaNcy sHuMaKER caNoN foR cHIlDREN’s MINIsTRIEs

Why is it that we hesitate to invite our friends, neighbors and colleagues to church? We never hesitate to invite our friends to a baseball game, concert, theater, dinner, dancing but we are afraid to say, “Please come and be with us at our church on Sun-day morning (or Saturday evening for Family or contemporary Worship Service). It is a great place to be! We find it most helpful and enjoyable to be there. Here are the dates of special events coming up that I know you would enjoy. If you would like, we could go together.”

When did we start thinking that this one invitation is all we need and that we have done our duty in trying to get our church to grow and introduc-ing our friends to a community of faith that is mostly foreign to our cul-ture? Going to church is no longer the norm. Unfortunately, it is the excep-tion. As The Rev Lyda K. Hawes states in the Leader’s Resources Program “Open Doors”, “Remember it takes the average buyer three times before they hear the offer and seven times before they buy. If that’s how the human brain works, why do we think that our invitation will be heard and accepted the first time?”

We, as members of a congregation, attend on a regular basis and mistak-enly assume that getting new mem-bers in our church is up to the clergy and paid program staff. Indeed it is part of their job, but they cannot do it alone. Here is another quote from “Open Doors”: “Over 90% of newcom-ers, who are not already looking for a church, come to church because they were invited by someone they knew.”

ThE EPIScoPaL church InVITES You

Take the opportunity to invite a friend, neighbor or colleague to church this year!

Building true meaningful relation-ships takes time. One invitation, “Hope you will come to our church” isn’t going to get it. Working for the advancement of the kingdom of God takes just that intentional and goal oriented WORK. Work with the inten-tion of accepting and embracing new persons into our church family.

OPEN DOORS is a program that will help you in the invitation process then takes you through planning and executing events with a purpose, hospitality organized and maintained by members of your par-ish who have the God given talent of making everyone feel comfortable and at home.

OPEN DOORS tells you in an organized and in a non-threatening way of how to incorporate, not only new members, but long time mem-bers whose talents are not being used simply because their talents have not been identified. Most of the time, they are just waiting to be asked. They are out there and need to be involved to feel a part of the church community. All we have to do is be intentional in finding them.

OPEN DOORS is available to all parishes and missions in the Epis-copal Diocese of Arizona for FREE. The license to download and use this program has already been purchased for you by the Diocese. It costs you nothing to use.

If you are interested in looking at this program, please contact me at (602) 254-0976 or [email protected].

In addition, Timothy Dombek, Canon to the Ordinary, and I are available to come to your church and meet with your clergy and lay leaders to help get you started.

This would be a great first step for starting off your 2013 pro-gram with a purpose that will guarantee positive results. Get ready, get set, and off you go!

Episcopal Community Services (ECS) is pleased to announce the 2013 grant recipients. This year, ECS received 17 requests for funding, and due to generous contributions and the receipt of a special bequest, we were able to at least partially fund 9 of those requests.

The total amount of grant funding approved by the Board of Trustees at their November meeting was $20,750. Our criteria for selection of the grant recipients was “mending the safety net: food, education, literacy and needs of children.”

What you have done for the least of these you have done it for me. - Matthew 25

The 2013 grant recipients include Grace St. Paul’s, Tucson, for St Jo-seph’s Pantry; St. Andrew’s, Glendale, for their STARS Tutoring Program; St. John’s, Bisbee / Naco Wellness for their Children’s Dental Health Pro-gram; Church of Our Saviour, Lake-side, for their Christian Community Outreach Project; St. Andrew’s, Tucson, for the expan-sion of their Neighbors Feeding Neighbors Program; Church of the Epiphany, Flagstaff, for their support of basic human needs; Church of the Advent, Sun City West, for their quilting project for abused children; and St. Luke’s at the Moun-tain, Phoenix, for matching funds for construction and expansion of their Food Pantry.

Your contributions to ECS and your congregations’ outreach ministry continue to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate!

This year’s Lay Leadership Retreat at Chapel Rock in Prescott will feature award winning guest speaker Michael Durall, who is a parish consultant, Principal of CommonWealth Consult-ing Group (www.vitalcongregations.com/index.html), and author of seven books about congregational life and stewardship. According to Durall, the hallmark of his work “is helping con-gregations develop tailor-made plans for the future, no two of which are ever alike.” As a speaker, he’s been known to throw out “heresies” from time to time, to keep things interesting!

Michael Durall will lead three plenary sessions during the retreat. In addi-tion to Durall’s presentations, separ-ate tracks will be offered for Wardens, Vestries/Bishop’s Committees, Clerks and Treasurers. Whether attendees are lay leader veterans or new to a leadership role, there will be some-thing for everyone.

Previous attendees have come away with valuable information that they have immediately put to use in their congregations, as well as having had the opportunity to network with oth-ers in the same leadership position.

This is the “must attend” event of the year for those in leader-ship roles in their churches!

Here is a brief schedule of events at the retreat. A more detailed schedule and registration form are available at www.azdiocese.org. This information will also be sent to all congregations.

Friday, February 22Registration, Dinner, First Plenary Session, and Social Time

Saturday, February 23Morning Prayer, Plenary Sessions and Workshops, Chapel Rock Tour, Sharing Best Practices

Sunday, February 24Breakfast, Plenary Session, Closing Eucharist

The Diocese has worked with Chapel Rock to keep costs as low as possible. Registrations will be filled on a first come, first served basis, and costs are based on double occupancy. Linen service rooms (St. James, St. Barnabas and Harte Lodges) are $140/person (towels, sheets, etc. provided); bunk house lodging (Cox, St. Matthew’s, and Kleindienst Halls) with linen service is $120; and bunk house lodg-ing without linen service (bring your own sleeping bag, blankets, towels, etc.) is $100. Single occupancy may be available for $180. For commuter attendees (no overnight accommoda-tions) the fee is $50, including meals.

“In the 1950s, it was common to see three generations of the same family in church on Sunday morning. Blue laws meant that retail

stores were closed on the Lord’s Day. Now, families are scattered and Sunday means watching sports and going shopping. How in the world can the church compete with so many dis-tractions, and the hectic pace of modern life? The answers might surprise you, and raise profound issues or lay leaders.” – MIcHaEl DuRall, “Evolution Occurs in Churches Too: Adapting to a Rapidly Changing World”

“As a parish consultant, I often ask churchgoers, ‘What do you yearn for in the life of your congregation?’ The responses are frequently

soul stirring, and include, ‘I wish my church had a more significant impact in the community.’ Or, ‘I yearn for a more adventuresome congregational life.’ Or, ‘I wish we weren’t so well established in the middle of the road.’ Or, ‘I yearn for a church-wide commitment to living the faith.’ – MIcHaEl DuRall

Oftentimes, I hold up this list and say, ‘Here is the church you wish to create. Let’s get started.’ But accomplishing this is more difficult than meets the eye. During this session, we’ll discuss some of your yearnings, and how to turn them into reality.” – MIcHaEl DuRall, “The Church We Yearn For”

and the rest of the AESF staff have worked continuously to enhance donor relations, especially through more rapid acknowledgement of contributions and a more informative and user-friendly website. They also welcome phone inquiries at (520) 320-1386.

We are now in “high season” for tuition tax credit contributions to the Arizona Episcopal Schools Founda-tion (AESF). While designation of an individual student beneficiary of such a contribution is prohibited, there is the opportunity for a donor to direct his or her contribution to one or more of the Episcopal member schools: Abbie Loveland Tuller School (Tucson), All Saints’ Episcopal Day School (Phoenix), Imago Dei Middle School (Tucson), St. Michael’s Parish Day School (Tucson), and St. Peter’s Episcopal Montessori School (Litch-field Park). There is also the option to leave one’s contribution undesignat-ed; such undesignated contributions are allocated equally to each of the five member schools of the founda-tion. This latter option could be quite attractive to donors who do not have a particular school affiliation, but who recognize the importance of Episcopal school ministry in the life of the Diocese of Arizona. I would make the case that Episcopal schools are among the most effective out-reach ministries in our Church.

In the last issue of the Arizona Episcopalian, I mentioned impor-tant changes to the individual tax credit program this year related to documentation, revised contribution limits with an inflation factor now in-cluded, and the establishment of the PLUS credit that allows donors with significant state tax obligation to make a second contribution eligible for dollar-for-dollar Arizona state tax credit. Details about these new features can be found on the founda-tion’s website (http://az-esf.org). Click the “Tax Credit Info for INDIVIDU-ALS” tab on the menu once on the site. Executive Director Cathy Wagner

At the beginning of this column, I referred to the “high season” for AESF, since one important date just passed (December 31, 2012) and one grows ever closer (April 15, 2013). Depending on a donor’s tax and cash flow considerations, he or she is likely to regard one of those two dates as the targeted deadline for a tax credit donation.

Meanwhile, and most importantly, the work in our schools continues apace. Given the continuing uncer-tainty regarding funding of public education in our state, we believe that it is all the more critical for our schools to offer a high-quality alter-

native for families. Your contribu-tions help our schools cast a wider socio-economic net in serving such families. Thank you for your support of Episco-pal education in Arizona.

Many congregations find it helpful to list in their Sunday bulletins an update on income and expenses. This makes for good “transparency” of church finances, but also is a gentle reminder to those who might be behind in their giving. The Finance Committee, with the consent of Diocesan Council, has suggested that we do a similar public reporting. Above is a listing of our congregations, their mission share, and their current standing. In a few exceptional cases, Council has granted an alternative payment plan to congregations facing severe economic dislocation. Those are so marked. The Council wishes to thank those congregations who are current in their mission giving and encourage those who may be behind.
