Principal’s ReportKitchen Master ChefI think parents would agree that excellent culinary skills are must for all students; good thing is, we do too. On Thursday our stage 5 food technology students participated in our very own Master Chef challenge to plan, prepare and present quality food for a panel of judges. Long-time Grenfell renowned Master Chef judge Matt Lynch-Preston returned to THLHS along with other judges Ms Lynch and the food loving principal. The students really enjoyed the fun and friendly challenge of impressing the panel and the quality of food was fantastic. Well done! The last SamuraiThe playground resembled a battle field on Tuesday as students and staff of Year 8 took their learning about ancient Japan to a practical level. During the past few weeks students in history and science have learned about the past eras of ancient Japan and the science behind the technologies used. As part of this learning the students developed suits of armour from trusty cardboard and were set several challenges against each other. Samurai masters Amey and Kuhn demonstrated they are not only great teachers, but masters of the past arts in combat, easily managing their younger and less experienced apprentices. There were plenty of laughs, learning, cardboard and fun had by all.

Band aidSounds like a charity super group from the eighties or a simple stick-on item that cures almost anything for young children however, it’s good to know that here at THLHS we have numerous qualified students with first aid training. This week many of our Year 10 and 11 students completed a first aid course as part of their studies. Some students complete the course as part of the requirement for sport coaching or outdoor recreation subjects and for others it was to gain valuable knowledge and skills. First aid is a great skill to have. Well done all those students who completed the course this week. Thanks to Kim Spicer and Surf Life Saving for providing the course.Shoes and gearA reminder to parents/carers that correct school shoes are black leather shoes and black or white leather sports shoes. WHS requirements exist in schools for students to wear shoes that protect students’ feet during practical subjects. If students are not wearing the correct footwear they maybe asked to complete alternate theory work in practical courses. It has become apparent that many students are coming to school unprepared for lessons. We all need to value learning so please ensure you child has the correct basic equipment to learn at school. Books, glue, scissors, pencil, LATS dairy and pens are all keys items for learning. Learning starts with the getting the simple stuff right.

DebatingWell done to our Year 9 debaters who did their best against Molong Central School last Friday. The opposition where high quality and took the points however, our students learnt a great deal from the experience. Have a good breakThank you to the great staff at THLHS for all your efforts during term 2. Your support, energy and extracurricular activities make school life such a joy for all our students. Thank you to all our great students at THLHS for all your efforts in term 2, learning and growing, making the role of staff such a pleasure. A fun game of hockey, students versus staff, was played on Thursday, a wonderful way to end the term.Start date term 3Staff return on Monday 23 July to learn and work together to improve knowledge about high expectations, HOW2Learn, literacy and numeracy, quality writing and SCOUT. Students return Tuesday 24 July, ready to learn with growth mindsets and new goals for achievement.NAIDOC Day Our Koori students will take part in the Weddin Shire Aboriginal flag raising ceremony on Friday to mark the commencement of NAIDOC Week. THLHS will hold NAIDOC activities on Friday 3 AugustNext termWeek 1 Friday - ski trip for our gold merit students.Principal’s five - parents, students, community and staff learning togetherProgressive learning – what is it?This information is an extract from School News Magazine– Issue 08 Term 2 2018. This article will make you think about why feedback, not marks is the key to learning growth.Within a classroom, the disparity between student learning can be as much as five to six years apart. Students at the lower end are often left behind while the higher achievers are not stimulated to their potential. Meanwhile teachers are forced to assess students against year-level achievement standards (using A to E reporting) which do not show the extend of a pupil’s growth.“This can lead to situation where a student who receives a D year after year is perceived as making no progress at all when, in reality, the student might be making as much annual improvement as a student who consistently receives an A” the Gonski Review says. The answer, says Gonski, is for a remodelling of the education system to focus on delivering at least one year’s learning growth for every student, every year. This personalised learning and teaching model would be based on each child’s needs. The review notes that there is compelling evidence in Australia and internationally that differentiated teaching based on ongoing formative assessment of a student’s learning progress significantly boosts student achievement.Food for thought.Have a great break – Ian Pattingale

Where are they now? Andrew SchaeferName: Andrew Schaefer

Year graduated: 2008

Extracurricular and/or sporting activities: During my time at THLHS I was involved in a variety of activities which included being a part of the SRC (Student Representative Council), peer reading, science competitions and art exhibits/competitions. I also enjoyed being involved in many sporting endeavours which included cricket, Rugby union, Rugby league, touch football, softball and hockey. I am certain that I have forgotten a couple activities but these are the main activities I was involved with.

How did you benefit from your involvement in these? Being involved in a variety of academic and sporting activities has given me a wide range of skills that have assisted me throughout my life so far. I think simply it was that I enjoyed doing these activities.

Favourite subject/s at school: I would have to say that my favourite subject during my school days was PDHPE, mostly due to the possibility of going outside to play sport. However, I think on reflection I really enjoyed the science and mathematics subjects. It may be a little nerdy but I enjoyed learning new concepts and the ways the world worked particularly in science, and I continue to do so to this day.

Favourite memory/memories: I can’t say that I have one favourite school memory but I would say that final one or two years were the most memorable. I think this is because it is the most fresh in my mind and I became the most involved in extracurricular activities. I also think that these years are the most memorable due to my classmates, as you spend six years getting know a group of people growing up together.

What you are doing now and what is the path you took to get to where you are today? Currently, my PhD thesis has been accepted in Exercise Science/Biomechanics. In my PhD I conducted a study on lower back injuries in junior fast bowlers. This involved measuring the fast bowling technique to see if this was linked to injury. I also devised a coaching program to change fast bowling technique to reduce injury risk. So how did I get here? After finishing Year 12, I took a year off where I returned to THLHS to work as a teacher’s aide for three terms. Following this I began my Bachelors of Exercise Science (Rehabilitation) at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Bathurst, where I learned the varying scientific aspects of sports and exercise. I initially expressed an interest in strength and conditioning, but almost on a whim I decided to complete an honours study where I became involved in biomechanics and fast bowling. My honours involved a study on changes in fast bowling technique during a 10-over spell. Also, during this time I completed a one year strength and conditioning internship with the Western Region Academy of Sport (WRAS), where I provided training programs for junior athletes in the Western Region of NSW. Upon completion of my Honours I received a scholarship to complete a PhD with CSU. My PhD studies took place at both CSU and the University of Newcastle, where I was also able to have the opportunity to teach biomechanics at both universities. Currently, I am trying to break into academia through either lecturing or continued research.

Career highlight/s: My biggest career highlight to date would have to be my first academic journal article being published this year. This was something I thought would never happen and is a little mind-blowing to think that I have in some little way contributed to the scientific community. Another highlight was also the opportunity to be involved in a basketball research study at the Australian Institute of Sport. I have also been able to present my research at a number of conferences including a world cricket conference in Sydney and Sports Medicine Australia conference in Melbourne.

Advice for the young: If you don’t know what you want to do after school, don’t stress! There are plenty of options in this world.
