A Couple of Words…
Oblation is an offering made to God. The bread and wine are offered at Mass as an oblation. It usually refers to an unbloody offering. A religious offering during worship or devotion. Sacrifice is an offering of something to God. It could include the slaughtering of animals. It is to offer something of great value to God. We could offer (sacrifice) a prized possession.

A Little Humor
After explaining the commandment to honor your father and mother, a catechism teacher asked her class if there was a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters.
One boy, the oldest in his family, immediately answered, “Thou shalt not kill!”
GOSPEL WHISPER—John 1:35-42
The call of the first apostles and disciples is not unlike our own calling to follow Christ.
The invitation is made to us and we respond.
In this world of competing “calls” and “invitations” do we strive to listen to Christ’s
calling out to us? Many times we follow the loudest calls instead of Christ’s quiet call. The
world screams to us and tickles our desires. Christ calls us to a serious committed relationship
with Him. He is not about entertainment, but an embrace of the heart.
In the Gospel, John the Baptist tells his disciples, “there is the Lamb of God.” There is the
Messiah, the Christ! Andrew and another disciple of John’s go and follow Jesus. John points
and they go. Willingly they go. John has pointed out to them the “promised of the ages.” This
Lamb of God will deliver the people from their bondage to sin and set them free to love the
One who loves them. Let us see and follow. --Father Bill John Melancon

Jesus' temptations
538 The Gospels speak of a time of solitude for Jesus in the desert immediately after his baptism by
John. Driven by the Spirit into the desert, Jesus remains there for forty days without eating; he lives
among wild beasts, and angels minister to him.241 At the end of this time Satan tempts him three
times, seeking to compromise his filial attitude toward God. Jesus rebuffs these attacks, which
recapitulate the temptations of Adam in Paradise and of Israel in the desert, and the devil leaves him
"until an opportune time".242
539 The evangelists indicate the salvific meaning of this mysterious event: Jesus is the new Adam
who remained faithful just where the first Adam had given in to temptation. Jesus fulfils Israel's
vocation perfectly: in contrast to those who had once provoked God during forty years in the desert,
Christ reveals himself as God's Servant, totally obedient to the divine will. In this, Jesus is the
devil's conqueror: he "binds the strong man" to take back his plunder.243 Jesus' victory over the
tempter in the desert anticipates victory at the Passion, the supreme act of obedience of his filial
love for the Father.
540 Jesus' temptation reveals the way in which the Son of God is Messiah, contrary to the way
Satan proposes to him and the way men wish to attribute to him.244 This is why Christ vanquished
the Tempter for us: "For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sinning."245 By the
solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert.
Saint Agnes, Virgin and Martyr
Feast Day – January 21
Christ has made my soul beautiful with the jewels of grace and virtue.
I belong to Him Whom the Angels serve.
--Saint Agnes of Rome
Prayer to Saint Agnes
St. Agnes, although you
were only a child, you
believed that Jesus was
always with you; help us
to remember that he is
also with us, and to
remain true to his
presence.
St. Agnes, you refused to
give up your faith; help
us to be proud of our
faith, to love it, to be
strong in it, and to give
witness to it daily.
St. Agnes, patron saint of
children, watch over the
children of the world;
keep them safe from
harm; be with them in
their hour of need; and
always pray for them.
Amen.

The pelican ripping its own flesh
to feed its chicks is an ancient
symbol that predates Christianity.
The legend of the pelican states that
during famine the mother pelican
will pierce its own flesh to feed its
young. This becomes a suitable
image to depict Christ shedding His
blood to both save us (on the Cross)
and feed us (the Eucharist).
For us today this image is a
strong reminder of our Lord, who
suffered and died for us to give us
eternal life and nourishes us on our
pilgrim way with the Holy
Eucharist. At the same time, may
that image move us to show the
same charity and self-giving love
toward everyone.
Message from the Diocese:
It has come to our attention that fake emails and texts are
being generated using the names of local priests and deacons.
These emails do not end in “diolaf.org” and instead use endings,
such as “bellsouth.net” or “gmail.com.” There have been a few
cases where church names and addresses are used. Forms of
address as “Fr.” and “Msgr.” are used which makes the bogus
emails appear to be legitimate.
Often the request will be to purchase gift cards and then to
photograph the numbers on the back of the card and send the
information to the email address on the request. It is a SCAM. If
you know the clergy member whose name is being used, please
contact him to let them know. If it is another clergy person whom
you do not know, contact Father Melancon who can then contact
them.
Father Melancon has not made any such requests, so let
him know if an email or text was sent to you requesting such
things. DO NOT fulfill the requests. These are SCAMS!
We want to thank Ray, Monica and
Stephen Latiolais for their
faithfulness in being our entrance
greeters for most Masses these past
few months. We thank all those
others who have helped in this
ministry. It appears that this
ministry will continue for the
future. Now, we will need others to
volunteer. It has become a vital
ministry and has allowed us to have
public Mass. Without the greeters
we would have to shut the doors
again. Please, contact the office. In
the foyer of the church there will be
a sheet to sign-up and add your
phone number and email. We will
set up a schedule and let you know
when it is time for you to exercise
this ministry.
The
Phoenix Like the pelican, the phoenix legend is an ancient one and was appropriated by Christianity to depict aspects of Christ. One version of the legend states that the phoenix chooses to die and is consumed by fire. After three days it emerges from the ashes, renewed, perfect, and alive! We readily see the connection between the legend of the phoenix and the Christian belief in the resurrection of Christ. It indicates the glorious resurrection of all the faithful in Christ, also.
