DIRECTOR OF SPORT REPORT This week the sports department welcomed being granted access to the ‘Athletic Development Facility (ADF)’ in the new STEM building. Once fully operational, this space will be one of the best facilities in school boy sport in Brisbane. Over the coming weeks, the procedures for the use, best practice for training and the maximising of student engagement with the facility will be finalised and a full ADF launch will occur. In the meantime, squads currently training with Mr O’Connor, Certificate Courses in the HPE department and the Weightlifting Club organised by Mr Webb will have access to the facility. It is wonderful we have got this great new facility, and fingers crossed in the coming weeks the playing surface and associated change rooms and other facilities of the sports centre will be made available. However, as I spoke to the whole school on assembly in week 1, a shiny new facility with some great ‘bells and whistles’ will not magically ensure we achieve the excellence in our sporting program we strive for. A large amount of effort has been put in by the students, staff and families while this building project has happened. It has been incredible that our College has been able to achieve the great results we have across a large number of sports and this is testament to the effort of all involved. This effort, dedication and hard work must continue when the facilities are fully operational. Weights still need to be lifted, sweat still needs to drip from boys who are working at 100%, training still needs to be intense, practice shots need to happen and mistakes need to occur and be learnt from. Just standing in the new gym or on the court is not going to make us better players or magically a better sports program. The challenge once the facility is fully opened will be improving on the effort that our boys, staff and community put in and only then we will be able to celebrate the success that will result from this hard work. Welcome- Corey Balharry – Sports Administration Assistant This week we welcome Mr Corey Balharry to the College. Corey has taken the role in the sports department as Sports Administration Assistant. Corey’s role will be to support the excellent work of Jane in ensuring the communication out to the community is accurate and as informative as possible. Corey will be supporting our coaches with all of their equipment requirements and also has the responsibility of assisting Sean O’Connor in ensuring the athletic development facility is used to its full potential. Corey comes with a wealth of experience from his own business, working in the athletic development industry. Corey is also a very proud old boy of the College. Please take the time to say hello and welcome Corey back to our community when you see him at sporting events in the coming weeks. Swimming Age Championship This Friday night our swimming age championships will be held at Yeronga Park Swimming Complex. This is a very important event not only during the swimming season but on the overall College calendar. The strength of our any swimming program is the competitiveness that exists between our own athletes. Friday night is an opportunity for our swimmers to push each other to do their personal best. Round 2 Review – Round Cancellation It was disappointing that Round 2 of AIC sport was cancelled due to the extreme weather that Brisbane experienced on the weekend. A decision like this is not made lightly and I know there was thorough discussion between College principals and other stakeholders to come up with the best decision for the whole association. Thank-you to the overwhelming large number of parents who have sent through their support of the decision. We look forward to playing this weekend!

Round 3 Preview v St. Patrick’s College This weekend we play St. Patrick’s. It was not too long ago that we started out year with trial games against our fellow Christian Brothers School. The challenge for all teams this weekend is to improve on the performances from three weeks ago. Each team can’t think if they won three weeks ago, that victory is guaranteed this weekend, and likewise, if a team was defeated in the trial the challenge is to have improved and record a win in the competition games this weekend. For many families, playing away at Shorncliffe is the ‘longest’ away game they make each year. Please allow extra time to get to venues this weekend as there always seems to be roadworks on the Gateway or some lights not working on Sandgate Rd. Our home volleyball court will be Somerville House for the remainder of the season or until the sports centre is fully operational. Our AFL teams will play Iona College on Saturday at Yeronga.

Good Luck to all of our teams for this weekend and to our swimmers on Friday night.

Eddie Wallace Director of Sport [email protected]

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING REPORT

The gym is finally here! It’s been an exciting week for the life of the College, with level 2 of the new STEM Centre opening its doors to an awe inspiring top class facility. We’ve come a long way to get here, and the end result is one the Lauries community can be proud of.

The photo above, shows 3 of the 4 customized rigs and platforms specifically designed with functionality in mind. Firstly, the rigs (black frames) have been spaced longer in length than usual to allow multiple boys to perform compound lifts at the same time. This will maximise work capacity in a session with up to 8-12 boys able to lift at the one time, as opposed to 2-4 in the old gym. The platforms have also been extended wider than the ‘typical’ dimensions. This was a contentious decision at the time but very happy with the end result. It has removed the ‘awkward’ little gaps between the platforms which are usually good for tripping on. The Lauries logo in the middle of the platforms are a fine finishing touch.

Although the photo above is complete, we’re still waiting for the ‘astro’ green carpet to be laid down the other half of the gym. This will allow open space for our speed, movement and conditioning development. Until this is completed, the gym schedule will stay as it has been since the start of term with selective squads only. When the facility is fully functional, open gym times for specific age groups will become available. As avid readers of the sports report you’ll find out when this time comes.

Times of transition are exciting. It allows re-evaluating current systems and process with the future view of strategic thinking. Just as the Reds showed promise last night with a new 1, 3, 3, 1 attack structure, and Lauries has waited some time to get to this point, progress is never linear and how exciting that future view suddenly looks.

Many thanks to Mr Wallace, Mr Hannan, Mr Alizart, and Mr and Mrs Sheehan for staying back until 8pm on Friday and ensuring the gym was ready to go Monday morning. Also to Junior who came in on his Saturday morning to add the final bolts to the rigs.

CRICKET REPORT

After our school’s start to the season against St Peters, I was very optimistic leading into last weekend’s games against Villanova. This was on the back of so many boys participating so well in their fourth term teams and I was very excited for our season that lay ahead. This excitement was dulled somewhat when the Principals of all the AIC schools decided not to go ahead with the weekend’s games because of the extreme heat that was forecasted. I’m glad that we weren’t paired against St Edmund’s school last weekend which would have seen us playing in temperatures above 40 degrees at some of their venues. It seems only fair that if some schools were going to be affected worse than others, then it was in the best interest of all schools to abandon all games.

School cricket seems to be much more difficult to succeed at compared to fourth term cricket. This is possibly because there could be a mixture of A and B players and possibly C players in the same team for fourth term cricket. There doesn’t seem to be that bowler you can get on top of in school cricket because the skill levels are very consistent to all players in the one team. The boys shouldn’t become despondent about their statistics in school cricket as most times it’s like comparing apples and oranges from term 1 to term 4.

I would challenge all boys that play cricket, to set goals at the beginning of each season. Good batsman should be aiming to get consistently over 30 runs a game in year 7, 35 runs in year 8, 40 in year 9, and 45 runs in year 10. Bowlers should be aiming to bowl five good balls every over in year 7, five good line and length balls an over in year 8, five good line and length balls with pace in year 9 along with 11 out of 12 balls every two overs bowled with a good line and length and with pace in year 10. Wickets will eventually come if you are bowling a good line and length for these periods. Other goals the boys could set are for batsman to try and score quickly. This doesn’t mean trying to hit in the air for distance but it does mean trying to hit the ball much harder and smarter by hitting the gaps. This will then give more opportunities to run between wickets which turns over the strike and accumulates runs.

Mr Hurford will conduct a Captain’s Class this Friday morning 17th January between 7am and 8am in the 7 Waterford room on the ground floor of the main quadrangle. This information will be expressed later this week in the school’s daily notices. He has presented these classes before and they are an excellent way to discuss team tactics and the positioning of players during a game. Mr Hurford is a current A grade player for the Redlands Cricket Club and is also the Head Coach for the club, therefore, we are grateful for his time and assistance and very lucky to have a staff member who is capable of imparting this knowledge onto the boys. The class is open to any boy that plays cricket and is interested in the captaincy and general leadership of a cricket team.

SWIMMING REPORT

Note: A big thank you to Nicolette Cordell for the great photos this week. The Latest Splash Although we weren’t playing on the seaming wickets of Runcorn - we cracked the Ton. It was great to see over 100 boys jump on the buses and head out to Centenary pool. We are certainly a huge presence at these carnivals and it is great to see most boys having fun and giving it their best. With the Year 7 boys joining the team this week there were black and gold colours everywhere.

The Power of the Red Frog The ‘red frog’, if you did a 50m free PB, was back for the first time this year. And don’t the boys love a red frog. We had 100% success rate in the Primary while the secondary was running at around 95%.

Well done boys on a very successful night and our AIC preparation is certainly well on track.

Year 7 Both the under 12 & 13 squads were boosted with the inclusion of the Year 7 boys after missing the first week because of camp. The depth of talent across these 2 age groups is very promising and will lead to boys pushing each other hard this week at the age champs. Not all boys will be selected to compete at Chandler for the AIC carnival so it is important that all swimmers come along this week and enjoy the competitive racing of the Age Championships. It is always an enjoyable night.

Age Championships The age championships will take place this Friday 17th Feb at Yeronga Pool. The event starts at 5:00pm with the warm-up set down for 4:30pm. There will be no bus to Yeronga. We require many helpers on the night with parents required for timing and BBQ duties. The night cannot start until we have 2 timekeepers per lane.

The night will be concluded with an Old Boys V Opens 4 X 50m free Relay. With ex age champions and Australian Team members on the Old Boys’ team they are going to very hard to beat. The current open team has set many relay school records over the years and this race will be a fantastic way to finish the night. Can the open team break the record again?

OPEN TEAM OLD BOY’S TEAM Will Blew Tom Bergin

Jordan Chiou Rowan Crothers Mackenzie Parker Lachlan Pigdon

Ben Rolls Will Stockwell AIC Selection Along with all sports at Laurie’s we require a level of commitment to training and weekly carnivals. The boys must be training with outside clubs and/or the SLC squad, attending pool and core sessions as well as the weekly carnivals to be eligible for AIC selection. Boys must have completed 8 SLC sessions to be eligible. These sessions include all activities mentioned above and 2017 camp sessions. Any swimmer who is very keen on making the team but may have an issue with this please contact Mr O’Sullivan at your earliest convenience. This minimum standard has been put in place to reward those who commit by putting in the effort and not those who in the past thought it was OK to attend age champs only and make the team. Your support in this matter will make a stronger team long term and is appreciated.

MET EAST Met East nominations are now closed

Important Message A gentle reminder to all boys who borrowed goggles off the coaching staff to return them please. We have had quite a few pairs not returned over the last couple of weeks.

We had our first complaint this year from the bus company regarding some mess left on the bus. We need to make sure we are on our best behaviour at all times and no rubbish is ever left behind.

VOLLEYBALL REPORT The heat is on! Whilst we would have loved the challenge of playing Villanova last weekend and improving our game play, the fact is we now have one less round in which to achieve our goals. It is therefore imperative that we remain focused this weekend against St Patrick’s College and remaining rounds. We had very good results in our trial games against St Pat’s but remember not to be complacent in playing them again and make sure you play every point like a championship point. This week we send our best wishes and good luck to students trialling at the district schoolboy level in the hope of making it into Met East Regional teams and possibly further into Queensland State teams. I hope to let the community know about any successful students in the next newsletter. These trials and competitions are a great opportunity to develop skills and learn from other players and coaches and put yourselves up against the best. Players who should have trialled would have been notified by their school coaches. During the weekend games I encourage all players to either come early or stay late and support your fellow school mates. It is an ideal opportunity to watch and learn from others and help to get a better understanding of the game. We all appreciate having some supporters cheering for us so let’s get behind one another and show what makes a great community. The next 5 weeks are going to be intense and we need all players to be supporting one another in training and games to ensure we achieve to our potential. My focus for you in the next round is to be excellent at the basics. Complete the basic skills to the best of your ability and you are fulfilling your role in your team. Be the best passer, be the best setter, be the best spiker, be the best server, be the best blocker, be the best you can be! “Nobody who ever gave his best regretted it.” – George Halas Domnic Aguiar Director of Volleyball [email protected]
