The Advantage ofField-Proven Functionality

ABB has taken years of process know-howand application expertise and packaged itinto its automation solutions. For operators, engineers and managers, ABB’s field-provenproducts and systems are designed to meetexacting needs and provide a solid founda-tion for future growth.

Process controlAdvant OCS is the only control system thattruly integrates logic, sequence, positioning, batch, regulatory and motor-drive controlwith manual supervision and intervention, self tuning and adaptive PID control all onthe same terms. Since the same system com-ponents are used for all these forms of con-trol, the duties of everyone involved becomeso much simpler.

AMPL is a function-block oriented languagefor all forms of process control, all in thesame consistent way. There are functionblocks as simple as logic AND gates and ascomplex as self-tuning, adaptive regulatorycontrollers—and everything in between. Theresult is perfectly clear graphic programs thatare easily understood by all plant personnel.

Operator EmpowermentABB combines state-of-the-art hardware andopen system standards with time-testedprocess experience to give the operator fullcontrol of the process.

Advant Operator Workplace includingAdvaCommand® software provides functionssuch as process supervision and interven-tion, event and alarm handling, processsectioning and operator authority definition,information-search capabilities, curve pres-entation of historical data and system statusmonitoring and display.

The utilization of standards such as X Win-dow System, OSF/Motif and MicrosoftWindows improve handling and provide thecapability to access supplementary informa-tion, e.g. accounting or customer orderinformation.

Advant OCS lets engineersdevelop control strategiesthe way they prefer to, i.e.graphically

CommunicationsABB offers a variety of communication solu-tions that can be applied to meet individualrequirements—from single nodes to enter-prise-wide communication networks.

At the lowest level, noise-resistant fieldbusesinterconnect field devices.

At the intermediate level control networksprovide real-time communications amongoperator, information management andengineering workplaces as well as withcontrollers.

At the highest level, an open plant networkinterconnects control networks and ties inplant-wide operator, engineering and infor-mation management workplaces as well asPC's and Intranet solutions.

With Advant OCS, processoperators do not have tochoose between overview ordetail they get both—simultaneously

The Advantage ofIntegrated Solutions

LMP 94505

The need for easy access to information atall levels of an operation is critical to its suc-cess. This is especially true today since manyorganizations have been flattened, makingfewer people responsible for more.

Thanks to the full functionality and opennature of Advant OCS, system operators canreach all parts of the plant from the screensin front of them. And leave all routine workto the system itself.

In addition, the open system standards em-ployed provides a basis for integration withall other computer systems in the plant, nowand in the future, expanding the horizon stillfurther.

Complete vertical and horizontalintegrationAdvant OCS manages logic control just aseasily as it manages sequence, positioning, batch, regulatory and motor-drive control, allin the same hardware and software. This“horizontal” integration of functions meansthat:

• electricians can wire up all plant de-vices to identical I/O terminals in thesame consistent way.

• control engineers can solve controlproblems in a natural way and freely mixthe different control disciplines inapplication programs without limitationsimposed by the system itself.

• process operators can supervise andcontrol the entire plant from a singleworkplace, all to the same principles ofinteraction.

Advant OCS allows horizontaland vertical integration offunctions for maximumhandling ease

7

CH 254993

ABB systems helps reducethe environmental impact.

But thanks to the incorporation of opensystem standards, Advant OCS also offers“vertical” integration of process, operationsand business management, allowing:

• top managers and production managersto examine key aspects of production atany time—in real time.

• process operators to look up the orderbook or production schedule in prepara-tion for future production runs. Orexamine the cost accounts of the run justcompleted.

All from the screens in front of them.

That is, a single consistent and user-friendlyenvironment for all engineering and man-agement tasks, better communication be-tween people and better organizationalflexibility.

Complete functional distributionFunctional distribution close to the processto be controlled can lead to substantial im-provements in system availability and signifi-cant savings in installation costs. That is whyAdvant OCS is a truly distributed controlsystem with field, sectional and plant levels.

Generally, each station is functionally com-plete, which means that if the data to beprocessed is available locally and the resultis needed locally, the required processing isalso done locally. This uncouples the sta-tions from one another functionally, which iscritically important in order to keep systemavailability up. For the same reason, no sta-tion failure anywhere can bring any otherstation down.

The Advantage ofScalability, Openness and Cost-effectiveness

ScalabilityAdvant OCS can be configured in a multi-tude of ways, depending on the size andcomplexity of the process. Initially, the in-vestment can consist of stand-alone processcontrollers and, optionally, local operatorstations for control and supervision of sepa-rate machines and process sections. Later, several process controllers can be intercon-nected and, together with central operatorand information management stations makeup a control network. Several control net-works can be interconnected into a com-plete plant network, which can sharecentrally located operator, information andengineering workplaces. We call it AdvantOCS scalability.

OpennessThe system is further strengthened by theflexibility to add special hardware andsoftware for specific applications such asweighing, fixed- and variable-speed motordrives, safety systems as well as productquality measuring and control in the paperindustry. Furthermore, second- and third-party administrative, information, andcontrol systems can easily be incorporated. We call it Advant OCS openness.

Cost-effectivenessThe step-by-step expansion capability ofAdvant OCS allows users to add new func-tionality without making existing equipmentobsolete. The system’s self-configurationcapabilities eliminates the need for engineersto enter or edit topology descriptions whennew stations are physically installed. Newunits can be added while the system is infull operation. Therefore, with Advant OCS,system expansion is easy and cost-effective.
