From the Editor
What a busy Christmas and New Year period we have had! Well done and congratula-
tions to all of our Life Savers, Bar Staff and most importantly Volunteers for making
the holiday season a huge success for the Surf Club.
We have had some live music sessions from Sinead Murphy and Zed Butell, as well as a very successful Trivia night. I think
we need to get some brains in gear though, as the Bogangar Belles have now won three times in a row!
It is times like this, when things are calming down again that I am thankful for being a part of a community like we have at
Cabarita Beach SLSC. There are no end to the hours put in by all volunteers through nippers, magazine editing, music and
the general running of the club. If you think you can help us out, come and join and tell us your special talent!
This January the Surf Club was lucky to play host to the winner of the Nutrigrain Iron Man Series, Ali Day. He visited our
club and taught the nippers a thing or two out in the surf, before enjoying the Nippers BBQ on the deck. Congratulations to
all of the Nippers who went off to Mollymook this summer to compete, I have heard and seen some amazing reports and
photographs, all of which can be found on pages 4-13.
I look forward to seeing you all around the club this coming month as we bring you more entertainment and fun times.
And don’t forget to purchase your Presentation Night ticket from the bar.
See you around

From the President
Hello again,
The busy Christmas period is just ending and once again all the volun-
teer life savers have once again provided exceptional service to the
growing numbers of people visiting our beaches. I hope that when you
visited the beach you said hello to those in patrol uniforms and thanked
them for giving their time. I know this is happening as I personally had
visitors to the beach come and thank me whilst I was on patrol during
this period.
Along with increased numbers on the beach there is also more people
coming up to the club to enjoy their leisure time. Bar manager Kate
along with her wenchettes and swains have been doing an excellent job of welcoming guests and provid-
ing a convivial and happy atmosphere. This has been augmented by the inclusion of some very popular
live music sessions by aspiring local artists. These local performers are providing their services at a huge
discount and appreciate the members who throw the gold coins and notes into their guitar cases.
The hot summer months have provided some challenges with the fridges at the club working overtime try-
ing to keep the drinks cold for members and guests. The bar staff are also working hard to ensure that
drinks are cold. Your patience and acceptance of some of these challenges is appreciated.
Many club members are often questioned by both members and guests about the running of the cafe. It is
crucial for all members and guests to understand that the cafe is a separate private business which has a
lease over portions of the club. This lease is negotiated by the board. The provision of meals upstairs for
members and guests is a reciprocal benefit arrangement that is constantly reviewed by the board with the
cafe. Bar staff have no control over these arrangements.
A selection of aspiring mostly junior athletes along with a weirdly named poppy Patience have been away
at Mollymook on the far South coast for the past week competing at the NSW Surf Life Saving Country
Championships. I have just read a report from this group that provided some great personal results. More
importantly for me the group had a great time and built on their strong friendships and camaraderie during
the week.
There are always members in our club who are proceeding through difficult times in their lives. Battles
with road signs, cancer and close family illnesses are things that no person expects or welcomes. Keep in
mind that whatever problems you perceive as vitally important may not come close to the difficulties
faced by others.
I am fortunate to have full health, a loving happy healthy family and great friends. I can only offer my
support and whatever help I can with a liberal dose of good humour. Much like a volunteer lifesaver.
Smile, stay happy and cooperate.
See you on the beach.

As it was our younger competitor’s first country carnival there was a few nervous
faces around but with encouragement from the bigger Caba nippers the smiles soon
returned to their faces. Our first day of competition was spent in the water and un-
der hard surf conditions Xane dove into his swim head first and pushed his way
around the course. Boards were up next and the surf had not improved but with
some helpful advice the younger crew members Xane, Kyle and Sienna were able to
get out and around the course. Xane was so excited when he came in to know he had
placed to compete in the final. Arms exhausted they competed in their finals and then
joined together to compete in the u10s in the board relay. The team was a sight to be
inspired by, waves just kept pummelling them but they never gave up, making Les
proud. Kyle was knocked back and back but just kept going. "On ya kyle" so much
Caba spirit in the u10s board relay team.
The next day so us on the sand flags sprints and relays it was time to put that train-
ing from Tim into practice as Xane and Tex ran the all age relay. Putting their heart
into the race they both left nothing behind well done boys. Finishing their sand day
with an u10 sprint relay using u8 Tex and u9 Xane, Sienna and Kyle the smiles on their
faces as they prepared to race said it all. They had had an amazing weekend. Thank-
you Caba crew for an amazing first country carnival weekend for our younger com-
petitors it was a blast and well done to our younger competitors an amazing effort.
Page 5
U10 Team - Clyde the Glyde Millroy, Sienna Swift Lee.
Breif over view of team events, individual results are not mentioned but results
achieved are a true measure of persistence, hard work and dedication.
Sprint Relay-
Tex Millroy (u8 -code name Nate Johnson) and Zane Bowen (u9) stepped up to assist older brother Clyde the Glyde
Millroy and Sienna Swift Lee in an amazing u10 sprint Relay for 12th out of 22 teams.
Kane Millroy (Tex's Dad) stress levels peeked to the max as Tex (u8) was slotted as second runner, as he had to
execute a baton change. This is something he's never done before. To his dad's relief he didn't disappoint, with a
crowd pleasing one handed change at full throttle.
Board Relay
With low tide and solid close out sets on the outer bar, teams were pushed to the absolute max in testing and
challenging conditions for this age group.
It was a straight out final of 22 teams due to the conditions.
It started out with Sienna lee who slipped out over one of the biggest sets of the day to get the team off to a great
start.
Outstanding mention to Clyde Millroy and Zane Bowen (u9) for their sheer determination and never give up atti-
tudes as they were repeatedly worked on the churning outside bar. Six teams retired due to the tough conditions
with the team achieving an outstanding result they should be very proud of 8th out of the 22 teams.
In the spirit of the carnival, the under 11s from Caba were represented by Hanna Whitney
and Stirling Crawford. The two of them tirelessly competed in pretty much every event
that they could manage. So much so, in many cases they stepped up to also represent
the under 12 age group as well in the Cameron, relay and the board rescue.
Likewise when it came to their relay, Sienna Lee and Clyde Milroy from the under 10s made sure that the under 11,s
were well represented as well. For which they came 5th in the final, which to my thinking, is a pretty awesome re-
sult.
Overall Hanna and Stirling were the quiet achievers and often in the top 6 places and in the bigger events, the top
10. After every event, it was and is always a pleasure to witness their sportsmanship and that great smile that can-
not be extracted off Hanna’s face. A testimony what great sports they really are and true ambassadors for the
Caba Crew.

U12 Mollymook Representatives
The pride of Cabarita – the mighty Under 12s – turned out in force for the club at Mol-
lymook and competed with distinction and grace. A total of seven of our U12 athletes
competed, and a huge thank you goes to the mums and dads involved in getting the kids
to the beautiful south coast. Special mention to the Sommervilles, aka the Brangelinas, who single-handedly looked
after three of those seven.
What was especially pleasing was the way our kids are coming together in their teams, and our U12 team relay results
in sprint relay, swim relay and board relay were super. Also fantastic is the way our kids are having a go at all the
disciplines. To see 5 of the 7 run out in the iron-man was very gratifying for the age-managers after the many hours
of nipper training each week.
Our competitors were Gia Milroy, Jemima Haynes, Tori Jones, Tabatha McDonald-Cass, Cooper Taylor, Reef Sommer-
ville and Nathaniel Bryant. Each of the kids performed admirably, and made finals in their favourite events.
Special mention to the following results:
Swim Relay team: 5th place in the final (Cooper, Jemima, Nat and Reef)
Board Relay team: 5th place in the final (Cooper, Nat, Reef)
Board Relay team: 16th place in the final (Jemima, Tori, Gia)
Sprint Relay team: 5th place in the final (Reef, Cooper, Nat, and stepping up from u11s was Sterling Crawford)
Cameron: 8th place in the final (Tori, Reef, Sterling, Cooper)
Cameron: finalist (Jemima, Nat, Tabatha and Hannah Whitney stepping up from u11s)
Also special mention to the following individual results:
Swim: Reef (7th), Cooper (8th) and Jemima (12th)
Board final: Reef (9th), Nat (14th); and Tori and Gia were finalists in the girls board event.
Flags: Reef (7th)
Iron Man: Reef (9th), Cooper (11th), Nat (16th) and Tori and Jemima both also competed
And our mighty U12s were well represented in the All-Age Relay with Reef, coming a creditable 6th overall in the final;
and in our Junior March-Past, Cooper, Tori, Nat and Reef all represented the club with pride, coming 4th overall.
Thanks again to the mums and dads for committing to the carnival, and to our club organizers for the training,
transport of boards, accommodation, and team management. And final special thank-you to the kids themselves – it
is truly an honor to be associated with these kids as they give their heart to each event they compete in. Did I men-
tion how much fun everyone had? Go Caba!

UNDER 13 COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT – 2015
It is a very satisfied Age Manager that sits down to pen this report about the U13’s at the 2015 Stramit Country Championships held at Mollymook. All a coach can ask for is that their athletes give a 100% effort when they “toe the line”. Having managed this lot from U6’s I know that each and every race of the Championships this is what I got from them!!!
All of our 7 competitors had the thrill of competing in a final at Mollymook, which is a great achievement in itself when you
consider the number of athletes competing and the distance we had to travel. Following is a brief rundown of each of the Champions results. Cahrizma: Won the Beach flags bringing home Gold and was second in the beach sprints. She was also part of the beach re-lay team which finished 5th in the final and part of the senior Cameron team also making a final. Jacob: Competed in the surfing competition making through heats to the semi-final. As part of the Board relay A team he
finished 7th in the final. He made the final of the swim.
Zane: Paddled his way into a strong individual board final finishing 15th, he was a part of the 7th placed Board relay team in a final, part of a swim team finishing 15th also and he made the swim final. Finn: Made the final of the beach sprints finishing 4th, the final of the ironman finishing 15th, swam in the swim final, was part of the board relay team finishing 7th, the sprint relay which finished 5th in a final and ran a leg in the All Age relay finishing 6th in the final. Shakyra: She put in an outstanding performance in the flags to finish 5th, she and Cahrizma worked well together to elimi-nate their opposition on several occasions. This was a performance that really did not surprise me after many outstanding
flags results at local carnivals, well done Shaka! She was also the first leg of the sprint relay team which finished 5 th in the final, she made the final in the swim and the ironwoman. Bree – Anne: Was a finalist in her swim and ironwoman and was part of the swim team finishing 15thand also swam a leg in the final of the senior Cameron. Danni: Ran exceptionally well in the sprints narrowly missing a spot in the final and ran a leg in the beach relay finishing 5 th. Danni also swam in the swim final.
There you have it, a brief rundown of some of their better performances at the Carnival. I could bang on about how each of
them when asked to join an U14 team did so or how they were on the sidelines cheering each other’s performances but I won’t. I could also thank an U12 for joining a sprint relay team so 3 of our team could run but I won’t we all know how that ended last time. I will finish by saying Ii was exceptionally proud of each and every one of these 7 athletes and their perfor-mances. Bring on Branch and look out U14!!

The Under 14 team at this years Strammit NSW SLS Country Championships might
not have been enormous in size but it certainly was enormous in enthusiasm, personali-
ty, support and friendship. our two team members where Amber Jones (Sommerville)
and Claudia Crawford and they certainly made the most of the weekend.
Day One consisted of the Water events . Amber and Claudes came in 5th and 6th in
their mutual heat which forwarded them into a semi final. A personal highlight for both of them
and proberly my proudest moment, They then had separate events which saw Amber be awarded by the officials
a 10 out of 10 for a creative return to shore and Claudes be cheered on by all her Cudgen and Byron friends that
she promised that she would actually DO board. Neither advanced further and where extremely happy. Not pre-
pared to wait another day to do her beloved beach sprinting, Claudes went up an age group and competed in the
U15s and placed Silver. Day over and well done girls. Day Two saw the always bubbly Amber slightly under the
weather, however in her normal dedication teamed up with Claudes, Cahrizma and Bree Anne in the Cameron
only to be rewarded with a fat lip and a fresh start to the morning. Darling Amber retired for the day after an ex-
hausting event, a sleep and a shop. Lets face it a new bikini makes everyone feel well and content. Claudes
evented in flags and finished in 6th place and evented in her U14 sprint, a quarter final, a semi final and her final
to finish with her goal of Gold. Claudes busted, Amber asleep equalled game over for the day.
Day 3, our last day. Amber again rose to the occasion to bear the flag for Junior March Past. With her trusty
minion and water bearer Stirlo at her beck and call she lead the Team beautifully and I could not have been
prouder of my two girls at their last Junior Country Championships So I would like to congratulate these two
champions and in fact the whole Team. You did your parents, your team, your club and yourselves proud. Well
done Girls.

I would like to congratulate the Caba Junior March Past team in their efforts at Country Titles 2015,
There was some challenges put before us, poor Amber our flag bearer being sick, but we phoned a
friend (Shirley the one and true Caba coach, people she is the best!) and we organised a backup plan.
If Amber could no longer continue, but luckily for us it didn't have to come to that. In true Caba spirit
Amber rose to the occasion and led the team into battle. Our two wheelers, Reef and Dani you guys
looked AWESOME, the wheel holders, Man you guys looked SENSATIONAL Finn, Bree, Cooper and Jacob.
Tori, Shak, Zane and Nat you four were all in line and looked AMAZING! I can't forget Claudia the team
captain your were the belt person and you kept them all in time, if it hadn't been for you or Amber we
wouldn't have gone as far as we did and by the way girls You guys looked EXTRAORDINARY!. I would
also like the thank Stirling in his awesome effort in training as a sub and getting ready for next
year. You marched proud with your pink ribbons over your hearts in true respect of this sport and of
the special meaning this held for us all. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful in placing in a medal po-
sition but we came fourth. On behalf of Cabarita Beach Surf Life Saving Club we would like to thank
you young talented children in supporting the club and letting everybody know where not just a small
club we're a big family and we have awesome competitors!
The Senior March past that's another story! Let's just say it consisted in a lot of alcohol, drag queens
and chants....Salt/Slat......

Hey everyone I hope you have all been having a great Summer, and for those who have been on holi-
days I bet you have been having a super fantastic summer with this lovely weather, I envy you :)
I just wanted to take this chance to say to all that have been coming up and supporting the club during
the holidays, Thank You.
My staff and I have been absolutely run off our feet and we have been loving it. So many friendly new
and old faces have been coming up and doing their part to support our local Surf Club and I think
word has been getting out about how awesome our club is! It was only a matter of time :)
I would also like to take this opportunity to say a big Thank You to all of the volunteers that have
helped out when we have been flat out, by picking up the glasses or jumping behind the bar, also our
usual Sunday volunteers have been under the pump for a few weekends now too.
And to my staff, you have been amazing during this holiday period, a big well done to you and an
even bigger thank you for being the Bar Wench's support team.
Let's hope this great trade continues into the year and help our club be the best it can be.
See you all at the club soon

Ali Day comes to Caba Last Friday’s training was made very special by the appearance of super
ironman Ali Day, winner of this year’s Nutrigrain ironman series. Ali ar-
rived at 4.30 to the welcome surprise of the 28 keen and eager nippers who
have followed his feats this year and idolize him; he immediately obliged
chatting with the kids and signing anything put in front of him. After a
quick introduction it was on to the beach for training with Ali keeping a
watchful eye on the kids and delivering valuable information and tips to
help them improve their skills. I was astounded by his charisma and con-
nection with the kids, he openly chatted and answered any questions
thrown at him by the kids some quite in deep and personnel but he was on-
ly too happy to tell them what they wanted to know. After training Ali was
presented with a Caba SLSC t-shirt, treated to some dinner from the fa-
mous Friday nippers BBQ after which he continued to chat with the kids
and patrons in the club and sign more stuff and have many photos taken,
staying around well into the evening, even joining in for a game of footy
with the kids on the grass in front of the Beach Bar. Ali’s visit was a huge
success with all the kids getting plenty of time with their idol and he im-
pressed the parents with his genuine humble personality and ability to con-
nect with all the kids. We also made an impression on Ali as he has promise
to make this an annual event and wants to make next year’s visit bigger and
better. I couldn’t think of a better role model for our nippers and ambassa-
dor for surf lifesaving. Thanks Ali
And a huge thanks to Jodie Wihlborg for her efforts in bringing Ali to our
club

Hi, My name is Shelly, and I am aiming to raise money for Pregnancy Loss Australia, to purchase a cuddle cot for Tweed hospital.
A Cuddle Cot is a cooling system that has been designed to fit within a small cot. This effective system allows for babies who have passed away to remain with their families so that they are not required to be cooled in mortuary environment. Cuddle Cots enable family members to travel to visit and meet the baby, siblings to meet one another and even gives parents the option of taking their baby home to lay in their own cot, in their own room or travel in their own car seat.
It’s about giving parents choices, and reassuring them that they can spend as much time as they like with their baby, without the fear of the
baby needing to be cooled in a traditionally mortuary.
Our Baby Leo's Story...
On August 22nd 2014 at 4:02pm Baby Leo was born at 34weeks +4days by an emergency caesarean. He was found to have a racing heart beat and needed to be delivered to receive the best medical treatment and medicine for his survival. Leo was born in Tweed Hospital and that evening was transferred up to the Mater in Brisbane with a Heart specialist team.
Myself and Leo's Daddy stayed in Tweed Hospital for the evening as I had just had major surgery and it was very late on a stormy night, there was a plan in place to get a hospital transfer for us the next morning. As it turned out Leo didn't make it before we could see him once more and hold his little hand that next morning, he passed away on August 23rd 2014 at 9am in the morning.
The plan in place was still received with an ambulance to take us up to the Mater in Brisbane to see our little boy,
when we arrived we were treated with exceptional care. There are many organisations in which we received help
and beautiful gifts from to help us as newly bereaved parents. I was so terrified holding my quiet baby in my arms not knowing what would happen next or how we would get through these next few hours... let alone the days weeks months and years without him.
That's when the nurses walked in and said "We have a cuddle cot would you like us to bring it in?". We had no idea what she was talking about to start with but as she started to explain Leo could stay in our room, Leo could sleep next to us and we would be able to hold our little baby when ever we felt the need we were nodding and saying yes please.
As first time parents we were able to spend a few hours with Leo alive which we are forever grateful for, as first
time bereaved parents we were able to spend a further 2 nights and 3 days with our baby boy. We were also able
to give his grandparents who flew between 2-4hours the opportunity to hold him, cuddle him and sing to him.
The most important part of all we had choices, and making the decision on when to leave the hospital and when to leave our baby boy was so important to be in our hands. Giving us the time to make memories, and say our hello's and goodbye's was so special.
I later found out, the hospital Leo was born in (Tweed Hospital) does not have a cuddle cot and I would like to fund-raiser in memory of Leo to ensure other families will receive the same choices.
Please help me to make an incredible difference for other families, all donations great or small are gratefully re-ceived and appreciated.
Thank you for your support.
Each year in Australia, approximately 150,000 couples experience reproductive loss; about 147,000 experience a miscarriage, 1,750
babies are stillborn and about 850 babies die in the first 28 days after birth

Bread & tomato soup (Pappa al pomo-
doro)
500 g ripe cherry tomatoes
3 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely sliced
1 large bunch of fresh basil, leaves picked, stalks finely chopped
extra virgin olive oil, the best you can find
sea salt
freshly ground black pepper
2 x 400 g good-quality tinned plum tomatoes
500 g stale good-quality bread
Prick the cherry tomatoes and toss them with one
sliced clove of garlic and a quarter of the basil
leaves. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, sprinkle
with salt and pepper, put them in a roasting tray and cook in
the oven at 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4 for about 20 minutes. The
reason for doing this is so that their flavour becomes in-
tense and concentrated.
Heat a lug of olive oil in a large pot and add the remaining
garlic and the basil stalks. Stir around and gently fry for a
minute until softened. Add your tinned tomatoes, then fill the
tin with water and add that. Break the tomatoes up with a
spoon, bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes.
Tear the bread up into thumb-sized pieces and add them to
the pan. Mix well and season to taste. Tear in the basil leaves
and let the soup sit on a low heat for 10 minutes. By this time
your roasted tomatoes will be done, with juice bursting out
of their skins, so remove them from the tray, remembering
to scrape all the lovely sticky bits from the bottom. Pour
them into the soup with all the juices, basil and oil from the
tray.
Give the soup a good stir – you're looking to achieve a thick,
silky, porridgey texture, so feel free to adjust it with a little
water. Then remove it from the heat and add 6 or 7 table-
spoons of extra virgin olive oil. Divide between your bowls
and serve with a little extra basil torn over the top if you
like. The most important thing with this soup is that you have
a wonderfully intense sweet tomato basil flavour.

Cabarita Beach is buzzing with excitement again!
For one day only, on the 1 March some of the region’s sustainable businesses and local artisans will be
showcasing their wares at the Caba Eco Carnivale. Cabarita Beach will come alive with music, art and eco
activities. This FREE event will celebrate and showcase the talents of our local community.
The Caba Eco Carnivale is set to be an annual event hosted by the newly formed Business Associa-
tion, Caba Progressive in Cabarita Beach / Bogangar, which is working to bring community and business-
es together. Activities will run from the Cabarita Foreshore down to Hastings Road with a Creative Zone,
Wellbeing Zone, Vibe Zone for the Youth with DJ Native Dog, Exhibition Street, Eco Markets and an Eat
Street plus live music, community art, workshops, eco displays and a fashion show!
The event will also mark the launch of Boomerang Bags Caba, a not-for-profit organisation, providing
free-to-borrow, re-usable bags made by locals from recycled materials to communities around Australia.
We are seeking expressions of interest from artisans, musician and eco minded creatives who are
interested in showcasing their work, running workshops or volunteering on the day.
There will be a small fee for participants generating an income from the event but no charge for NFP or-
ganisations, community groups, demonstrations etc.
Please direct all market stall enquiries to the Peita Gardiman at [email protected]
