Youth Forum – ‘Bayside Says No to Bullying ‘at Brighton Town Hall (August 13)
Fifteen Year 5 students from HPS along with students from Brighton Beach PS, Beaumaris PS,
Sandringham PS and St Leonards College attended the first Bayside Youth Forum for Primary
Schools. The theme of this forum was ‘Bayside Says No to Bullying’. We are proud to say the
initiative for this forum evolved out of the work HPS and Brighton Beach Primary School
commenced in 2013 as a result of the Bully Stoppers project grant and our aim to promote
student voice through joining together our student representative groups and taking a stand
against bullying.
The students have taken on the responsibility of becoming leaders against bullying in all its forms.
Participating in mixed groups, the students attended workshops specific to bullying, wellbeing and cyber
safety. On our returning to school they have completed evaluations of the day and commenced planning to take
action. They were all very excited to be ambassadors for Bayside’s ‘Say NO to Bullying’ campaign. We thank
Kelly Edwards and the team at Bayside City Council’s Youth Services for helping us to make this event
possible. Thank you to Alicia Blundell-Smith who attended the forum with our year 5 students and participated
in the workshops. The students had a wonderful day and were able to clearly articulate their opinions.
Please make sure to read Lexie Ferguson’s reflection included in this newsletter.
Other School Student Wellbeing news:
We are currently completing the four training modules to become a KidsMatter School as part of the
implementation of the revised HPS Student Engagement and Wellbeing Policy. KidsMatter Primary is a
mental health and wellbeing framework for primary schools and is proven to make a positive difference to the
lives of Australian children. KidsMatter Primary provides the proven methods, tools and support to help
schools work with parents and carers, health services and the wider community, to nurture happy, balanced
kids. KidsMatter Primary is a flexible whole-school approach to improving children’s mental health and
wellbeing for primary school students. Through KidsMatter Primary, schools undertake a two-to three-year
implementation process in which they plan and take action to be a positive community; one that is founded on
respectful relationships and a sense of belonging and inclusion, and that promotes:
social and emotional learning (including evidence-based social and emotional learning programs)
working authentically with parents, carers and families, and
support for students who may be experiencing mental health difficulties.
We are currently utilising the KidsMatter Framework to build on the work that we have already been doing
with Social and Emotional Learning at HPS with programs such as, Restorative Practices, Friendly Kids
Friendly Classrooms, Bounce Back, Friend for Life, Peacemakers, Cyber Wise and the Bully Stoppers
Program initiative.

Seven principles underpin the KidsMatter Primary framework. They have been informed by research and the
experiences of primary schools that successfully implemented KidsMatter.
The seven guiding principles are:
1. The best interests of children are paramount,
2. Respectful relationships are foundational,
3. Diversity is respected and valued,
4. Parents and carers are recognised as the most important people in children’s lives,
5. Parents and teachers support children best by working together,
6. Students need to be active participants,
7. Schools, health and community agencies work together with families.
The KidsMatter Framework has four components and these are:
1. Positive school community. 2. Social and emotional learning for students.
3. Working with parents and carers.
4. Helping children with mental health difficulties.
We are currently completing component 2 as part of our teacher Professional Learning this term.
Seeking Parent Participation for Module 3:
I will be seeking an interested parent to attend the third module with our Student Wellbeing Team
representatives either during term 4 or early in 2015, please let me know if you would be interested to attend
the training. To express your interest please speak to me directly by the end of this term.
This week I have started a new award and these are part of our recognition of students who are displaying
Hampton Community Spirit and the School Values. It is called the ‘Hampton Primary Citizenship Award’.
3 students were chosen to receive the Citizenship Award this week:
Audrey Smart,
Josie Wong, and
Gemma Elliott.
They received this award displaying the HPS value of ‘friendliness’, through being very understanding and
inclusive in the playground. Well-done girls!
Assembly News:
Well done to Yellow Gums (Foundation B) for their lovely and clear performance of the
National Anthem!
The performances by the Drum Line were amazing they didn’t miss a beat; they were in sync and each
member remembered all of their lead roles throughout the performances. Well done to Brent
O’Mara, Oliver French-Medic, Tommy Randall and Traci Cenedese. The Drum Line was
skillfully lead by Peter Validevoo and they performed the pieces of Hampton Cats and Rim
Magic.

TUESDAY 26TH AUGUST
On Wednesday 13 August, 15 grade 5 students along
with Mrs Blundell participated in the ‘Bayside says
no to bullying' conference at Brighton Town Hall.
The main purpose of the day was to educate the
grade 5 students on how to deal with bullies and
bullying type issues. These grade 5 ambassadors will
now begin sharing their knowledge with the
Hampton community. The day was filled with many
enjoyable moments and was a great opportunity for
students to share their ideas with other students from
local schools.

MUSIC-5/6 PRODUCTION
WE NEED YOU! Could you please assist in your child's production by helping
us build some production sets!
We have 3-4 main scenery flats to make. By a 'flat' I mean a freestanding 2D
scene image painted on plyboard and secured for stability and safety at rear with
pine framing and support brackets. I can supply direction and scaled images of
what we need and I will just require some people to help cut out image and build
framing and brackets. Please note NO design and painting of flats is required
outside of building structure!
We need approx 4 handy "men" to come help this Sunday 24th August, 12.30pm-
onwards in the BER. We will need someone to collect timbers from Bunnings
prior and deliver to BER (preferrably on the Saturday) and then cut and form
flats on the Sunday. The design will be drawn on flats and all ready to be cut and
framed on the Sunday so we don't envisage more than an afternoon if we have a
crew of 4 or more.
You do not need to be a fully fledged builder (however we wouldn't say NO to
it!) but just have some handyman skills and own tooling to help out. If you think
you can help please call Tarsha Mautone on 0409409755 or email me at tmeehan-
[email protected]. If you offer such skills but are unavailable to help this
Sunday please still contact me.
School Notification – Important Health message Reminder Dear Parents,
Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly progressive allergic reaction that is potentially life
threatening. The most common food allergens in school aged children are peanuts, tree nuts,
eggs, cow’s milk, fish and shell fish, wheat, soy and sesame.
There are a number of students in many classes who suffer from life threatening allergies to
insects/bites stings and various foods and that can cause anaphylaxis. It is important to
understand that some children can become seriously ill by eating or simply coming in contact
with these foods.
As a school we are asking you to avoid sending nut and nut products within your child’s
lunch or play lunch. This support will be extended to excursions and class parties when they
arise. We appreciate that these restrictions can cause problems for some parents as some
children can be fussy eaters, however the health and safety of all students must be considered
for all of us.
All schools have a duty of care to each and every student. The key to prevention of
anaphylaxis is knowledge of students at risk, awareness of triggers (allergens) and prevention
of exposure to these.
The Victorian Government’s Anaphylaxis Guidelines came into effect July 2013 and
Hampton primary School Anaphylaxis Policy can be accessed from our web site.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school nurses.
Kind regards
Susie Lohan and Jo Bergman (school nurses)

Children’s Book Week – 16-22 August 2014
This week is Children's Book Week - a celebration of books, authors, reading
(and, of course, libraries!). The theme for this year is Connect to reading –
Reading to connect - enjoying the experience of exploring stories, and travelling to other worlds.
This is the week in which the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) announces its annual book award winners.
Each year the school library purchases all the shortlisted books in all but the Older Readers categories. These will be on display (and available for borrowing)
in the library from this week. I really encourage you to read and enjoy these books with your children - they
are generally the 'creme de la creme' of locally published books in their category, from this past year. They will stimulate the imagination, encourage
the search for information and hopefully foster a life-long love of reading.
Wishing you a wonderfully literary week! Alison
