Agenda• Findings — our propositions• Introduction• Research question• How we got there• What comes next

PropositionsProposition 1: Less rework will be required when performers can develop a

shared understanding of the Conditions of Satisfaction (criteria) with those (customers) who will assess their work

Proposition 2: Shared understanding is most likely when the criteria are explicit

Proposition 3: Everyday learning will help make tacit information more explicit.

Introduction• Common understanding à reduced snagging/punch list [Pasquire 2012]• Shared understanding of a project [Pasquire & Court 2013]

Introduction• Common understanding à reduced snagging/punch list [Pasquire 2012]• Shared understanding of a project [Pasquire & Court 2013] • Shared understanding à communication & collaboration [Koskela et al 2016]• Shared understanding underpins flow [Pasquire & Ebbs 2017]• Glenn Ballard’s discussion in the concluding chapter of his PhD [2000]

• Rework 5-10% of project costs (or more)• Everyday learning à everyday improvement, building new habits

• Episodic learning (e.g. middle & end of project lessons learned) doesn’t work

Research Question

RQ = how can we reduce rework arising from misunderstanding the Conditions of Satisfaction?

How we got there

Reliable promising, Last Planner® System, Flow, Rework, Everyday learning after Fernando Flores 2013

Promise cycle

Rework: when the production crew misunderstand what’s wanted

Ballard 2000

Reliable promising, Last Planner® System, Flow, Rework, Everyday learning

It’s important that the assessors (customers) & production crew have a shared understanding

Page 5: Last planner, everyday learning, shared understanding & rework

Directives related plan failuresI didn’t understand the

real criteria for my deliverable

Incorrect specification of pre-requisites

I didn’t understand what the requestor needed and why she wanted it

I didn’t understand the applicable requirements

Redefinition of criteria occurred during the

planned weekIncorrect specification

of output

Incorrect specification of processes

Incorrect specification of resources

The directives were incorrect

What changes in directives are needed? Who can make the changes?

Why didn’t you understand what the requestor needed? What stopped you understanding the requirements? What would prevent repetition?

Why did criteria change during the week? What could be done to avoid the need for change? What stopped the prod’n crew learning of the change while they worked? after

What comes next?• Rigorously observe what happens in the field;• Root cause analysis of rework to establish if lack of shared understanding of

the directives created the need for rework; • What makes it easier/more difficult to share understanding of the

Conditions of Satisfaction/criteria in a construction project – in design, in off-site fabrication, in assembly? • How can we make it easier for project stakeholders to share tacit knowledge

online and to recognise the importance of sharing implicit knowledge to mitigate risk? • What makes it easier for workers to stop and correct defective work?
