The various series and types, their specific material com bi n -a tions and whole range ofperformance levels, are de-signed to satisfy the preciseneeds of each individualindustry and its areas of appli-cation. The performance pro -files for large and special fansdiffer greatly according to theindustrial sector. Sometimes aparticularly high temperaturestability is need ed, elsewherethe greatest possible resist -ance to corro sion may be re -quired. Other times, maximumresistance to wear or thesmoothest pos si ble runninghas the greatest priority in theperformance profile. Thus, thevarious de mands require indi-

vidual en gi neer ing and pre-cise custom-engineered solu-tions.

Sound-proofing, the elimina-tion of structure-borne noise, corrosion resistance, gas-tight versions, minimal dustde pos its and countless other speci fi ca tions are the chal-leng es that Venti Oelde is daily confronted with anew, enabling us to alignthe process engineering variables to the respectiveneeds of our customers.

In use in the cement industry

Venti Oelde is one of theworldŹ¼s leading providers oflarge and special fans for thecement, lime and gypsumindustries. They are in usethroughout the complete prod uction process chain, from firing and cooling, grind -ing and separating to dustremoval. Our fans work underarduous conditions, fulfillingvarious functions, dependingon their operating point andapplication.

The large fans are confrontedwith acceleration and centrifu-gal forces of varying strength,as well as with vibrations ofdiffering strength and direc-tion. They must withstandchanges in temperature aswell as corrosive media at -tacks and abrasive dust andalso fulfil the regulations fornoise control.

Venti Oelde engineers areacquainted with the completeproduction process. They select suitable materials forthe individual components, dimension them according tothe application and adjustthem to each other. Reliablewear prevention, high effi-ciency and long service livesare the main objectives of ourplanning and production.

When grinding cement, coaland raw materials, the mainfocus of fan technology is onwear prevention as well asenergy efficiency. With sep a r-at ing, variable regulation ofthe amount of air is one of the decisive factors.

89

For combustion air, VentiOelde supplies two-stagecentrifugal fans with up to 400 kW drive power. Modernburners with pressure rangesof between 250 and 400 mbarare thus made even moreeffective. In addition, the com-pact, centrally arranged drivesaves space and cost.

For the cooling of rotary kilnjackets, swivel-mounted axialblowers force air against theouter surfaces. They can beeither permanently installed or set up to be manoeuvrable.

When dedusting furnaces andcoal, tube and cement mills,as well as clinker coolers, theevacuation of particles is ul-ti mately the main focus. Fansbehind bag filters or electro -static precipitators con veylarge flow volumes at re la -tively low differential pres -sures.

With cooler exhaust air, wearis generally to be preventedand heat-resistance assured.

With heat exchanger fans, caking is to be avoided andexceptional heat-resistanceensured. By adaptation of the blade geometry, caking isminimized, maintenance workis reduced and a long servicelife guaranteed.

Extreme performances for the steel industry

Large fans are indispensablein the steel industry. Theyperform untiringly in sinter, pellet, dust removal and gascleaning plants, in furnaces, pickling and direct reductionplants. Conveying fans, pro-c ess and exhaust gas fans as well as ventilating fans, trans port enormous amountsof dust, move tremendous masses of air and handledangerous gases.

The demands on technology, material and mechanics arecomplex. Venti Oelde re -sponds to this with individualdesigns, precise constructionand high-quality production. In this way, we create eachplant individually ā€“ for first-rate performance and reliableoperation. We produce newplants and modernize existingones. Our ā€œupgradesā€ in creaseperformance, optimize theprocess and save energy.

When using large fans, theinterfaces to the plant are ofdecisive importance. VentiOelde therefore provides, onrequest, the complete en gin -eer ing with reliable pressurecalculation and optimally de-signed ducting.

For long service life andtrouble-free operation, VentiOelde large fans are frequent-ly equipped with journal bear -ings. In addition, they have a special blade construction.Caking of sticky dusts can bereduced by the use of waterinjection, for example.

1011

as for core drying. We adjusttheir speed to the requirementat the particular operatingpoint.

For sinter plants, Venti Oeldeproduces cooling-air fans thatcan transport 2.3 million cubicmetres of fresh air per hourthrough the cooling chamber.

When toxic or explosive gas -es, such as converter gasescontaining carbon monoxide, are conveyed, the openingwhere the shaft passesthrough the fan casing mustbe absolutely gas-tight. Multi-chamber labyrinth seals withsealing gas connection pro-vide the safety required here.

Hydrochloric acid is used inpickling plants to descalesteel plates. Our corrosion-resistant roasting gas fanslead off aggressive acidvapours. The inside of the fancasing is lined with extremelyresistant hard rubber, the im -pellers are made of titanium.

Sometimes, the peripheralspeed of large fans ap-proaches the limit of what is physically possible. VentiOelde has tested the tem pera - ture-dependent strength andyield points of materials formany years. Reference val ueshave been established andour own safety standardsintroduced. We plan, dimen -sion and manufacture fans forpermanently high demandson the basis of FEM com pu ta- tion.

Our circulation blowers canwithstand temperatures of upto 1,000Ā°C and are used fortempering, annealing and hard ening furnaces, as well

Tireless in chemical plants and refineries

There is a multitude of differ -ent tasks for Venti Oelde cen-trifugal fans in chemicalplants and refineries. Theyare needed in methanol pro -duc tion, in fertilizer productionand in the gasification of oil, coal and residues. They alsoprovide their untiring servicesin coke plants and pharma-ceutical engineering. Plantconstructors and operatorsworldwide are among thosewho have been our custom -ers for many years.

Our centrifugal fans are oftenin use 365 days a year inarduous and hostile areas. These fans can be so e quipp ed, that they even withstand sandstorms andsnowstorms, high humidityand tempera tures down tominus 50Ā°C. Our fans run foryears under adverse condi-tions ā€“ with high availabilityand energy efficiency and tothe complete satisfaction ofour customers.

Together with the fans, wedeliver the requested equip- ment such as variable inletguide vanes or dampers withdrives, inlet boxes, flexiblejoints, silencers, ductwork andblow-off systems, as well asfilters and vibration dampers. We attain optimum per form -ance coupled with maximumavailability of the plant by suit-ing these components exactlyto the needs of our custom -ers.

1213

The dependable quality of ourfans and systems is based onon-going technological devel -opment, high-grade materials, perfect workmanship and triedand trusted components fromother manufacturers. If re-quired, centrifugal fans cancomply with the strict AmericanPetroleum Institute StandardsAPI 560 and 673.

For manufacturing, we usehigh-grade materials such ascarbon steel, high-grade steeland special-purpose alloys. In addition, we equip our fanswith bearings from well-knownmanufacturers and also useexternal oil feed plants for the lubrication of bearingsand drives. On request, the oil feed plants can complywith the API 614 Standard.

The quality demands wemake on material correlateswith the high-quality of ourprocessing. Shaft seals aredesigned individually to workunder the specific conditionsof use ā€“ if necessary we usemulti-chamber labyrinth sealswith sealing gas connection.

Our fans are mostly driven by electric motors, less oftenwith steam turbines, but alsoby a combination of the two.On request, we equip ourfans with electronic controlsystems from well-knownmanufacturers for the moni-tor ing of rotating components.

Indispensable in power stations and waste incinerators

Air is required for combustionprocesses in power stationsand waste incinerator plantsas well as in the utilization of secondary raw materials.Con ventional grate firingneeds large amounts of air at low pressure. Modern fluid-iz ed bed combustion systemsneed moderate amounts of air at a high pressure of up to 200 mbar. The air must beperfectly dosed and be avail-able more or less at the pressof a button.

Venti Oelde large and specialfans provide adequate a mountsof primary and sec ondary air.A precise speed controllerquickly adjusts their perform-ance to the optimal operat-ing point and so controls thecombustion process. Theexhaust air, laden with dust, gases and pollutants, isdrawn off by flue gas fans.

Our system solutions ensurehigh operational reliability, maximum performance andoptimal efficiency. We pro-duce temperature resistant fan components from high-temper ature resistant andheat-stable steels as well asfrom nickel-based alloys.Corrosive attacks are wardedoff with rust-proof chromesteels or hard-rubber coatedcomponents. When outsideconditions are aggressive,e. g. there is an increasedacid concentra tion in theatmosphere, then we pro-duce our fans com pletely fromspecial-purpose materials.

We offer automatic controls, such as bearing temperatureand vibration monitors, forfast recognition of any oper-ational faults.

1415

In the primary air area, ourinduced draught fans servescrubbers, dust collectors, heat exchangers and desul-phurization plants. Venti Oeldeadapts their design and per-formance to the technicalrequirements of the plant.

Our primary air fans transportmore than 500,000 cubic me tres of air per hour andwork at speeds of up to 1,800 rpm. This equates toperipheral speeds of morethan 150 m/s. To reach per-fect running qual i ty, however,we use special bearings. Of course, the ro tors in ourmachines are dynamicallybalanced to category G 2.5for such demand ing operatingconditions.

Our pyrolytic gas or recirculat -ing fans are at home in thesecondary air area. Theyswitch themselves on whenrequired as soon as the fluegas composition changes, whether during start-up orshut-down or because of thecurrent fuel composition.

Our fans transport gas directfrom the boiler, compress itand pass the flue gas back tothe combustion process. Thisbrings about a decrease inthe nitric oxide concentrationso that the demanded emis -sion levels can be maintained. For the subsequent flue gasconveyance, we make the fan shaft seals gas-tight withmulti-chamber labyrinth seals.

Individual custom-engineered designs

The construction variants andspecial solutions are manifold, because the made-to-measureconfigura tion of our fans andplants make for maximum effi-ciency in process engi neer ing.

Venti Oelde also optimizesexisting fans and their alteredperipheral systems. We adaptthem to suit changes in pro-cesses and increased de -mands. The long runningtimes of our fans ensure ef -fective operation of our cus -tomers plants. We offer sucha service both for our ownfans and systems, and forthose of other manufacturers.

Service-specific and econom-ically reliable individual solu -tions are our speciality. Therange they cover can be bestillustrated by a few examples.

In pre-stressed glass plants inthe glass industry, our special -ist fans generate short-termvery high pressure dependingon the glass thickness. Theacceleration and braking ofthe impellers generate highdynamic loads. We use FEManalysis to determine the fa -tigue strength required. Ourspecifically developed designprogramme for couplings and bearings guarantees high operational reliability.

Stand-by fans with internalcombustion engines are putto work in critical productionareas. Should the power sup-ply to the main fan fail, thenthe stand-by fan ensures theproduction process. We inte-grate this fan in the processcontrol system via an auto -matic starting device.

Our corrosion-resistant fansare also put to use in the foodindustry. Here we use stain-less steel or special coatings.

Greatest attention is oftenfocused on wear protection,e. g. in wood chip drying forthe production of MDF andHDF boards.

Where heavy oil or substitutefuels are used to provideenergy, we prevent corro siveattacks, amongst other things, with acid and rust re sistantchrome steels.

A further speciality is ourshock-resistant large fan forshredder plants. Appropriatepressure venting devices are incorporated both in thecasing and in the impeller toact against pressure shocksof up to 3 bar.

In many applications, e.g. for conveying of fresh air orclean-gas side process air, fans with profiled impeller blades are recommended.Their design is comparablewith the wing of an aeroplaneand the advantages of thatare clear: Better flow guid -ance, higher efficiency andthere fore lower energy con-sumption. A further benefit isthe reduction in noise level byup to 10 dB in the optimum ofthe characteristic zone. Costintensive noise protectionmeasures are often no longernecessary.

Our two-stage, high-perform -ance centrifugal fans gener -ate a negative pressure of up to 600 mbar in non-wovenproduction, for instance. Weequip these fans with journalbearings and separate oilfeeds.

1617

We equip fans that conveyhot exhaust air with heat in- sulation that simultaneouslyacts as a sound isolation. Theinsulation is designed to meetcustomer-specific require-ments with regard to surfacetemperature and noise level.

Design and set-up variations

This representation of a centrifugal fan shows variousconstructional solutions thatcan be used, depending onthe application.

With double-inlet centrifugalfans, the medium handledenters via inlet boxes that areflange-mounted to the faninlet side or are directly weld -ed to the volute casing.

Variable speed drive motors, louver dampers or inlet vanecontrols lend themselves toadapt the amount of gas tothe needs of the connectedsystem.

Anchoring directly to the rais ed concrete foundation is particularly beneficial when, due to operating conditions,im balance in the rotor is to be expected.

Vibration dampers, togetherwith flexible joints, ensuredecoupling between the fanand connected systems.

The efficient operation of fansis based on their operationalreliability and availability.Inspection doors allow us tocarry out control and main -tenan ce work on the installedrotor. The divided or segment -

ed construction of a casingallows the complete rotor, i. e.both impeller and drive shaft,to be removed with only par-tial dismantling.

Lining the volute casing andimpeller with wear-resistantmaterial results in the consid-erably lengthened service lifeof fans that convey medialaden with solids.

Sealing the opening wherethe shaft passes through thecasing prevents dust fromescaping and protects thebearing from contamination. When hot gases are conveyed, cooling impellers between the casing and bearing en-sure the removal of retainedand creeping heat. In criticalcases, additional oil-circulat -ing lubrication improves bear -ing cooling.

We use splitter silencers, hous ing insulation or sound-proofing enclosures to bringthe fan noise to a level thatfulfils legal demands.

The mounting of large fans ona concrete foundation guaran-tees high torsional rigidity andnegates the need for a weld -ed motor pedestal. Re cessedfoundations or raised con-crete foundations are suitable. On request, we can almostcompletely eliminate dynamicinteractions between fan andbase by fitting vibration damp -ers between them.

Depending on the operatingdata, we construct our centri-fugal fans with either single ordouble inlet, i.e. single-width or double-width. On the basisof the geometry, masses, speed and the expected loadon the rotor, we determine, together with our customers,if the im peller is to be over-hung or mounted betweenbearings.

The suction of a fan withoverhung rotor is broughtabout via a flanged duct or a shaped inlet, pos sib lywith the interconnection of a throttling element.

Air flows onto rotors mountedbetween bearings via inletboxes. The throttling elementsare arranged as multibladedlouver dampers in front of theinlet boxes or inlet vane con-trols behind the inlet boxes.

Speed control

Speed control always pro-vides the optimal flow volumewith regard to operating modeand energy consumption. Thefan operates as a matter ofprinciple at higher efficiency.Mechanical stress and wearon rotors subject to a dust-laden gas flow in partial loadoperation are distinctly re-duc ed.

3Inlet vane control andlouver dampers

Inlet vane controls and multi -bladed louver dampers arefrequently used to control theflow volume of fans. Theirvanes are adjustable. Thisinduces a spin in the gas flowwhich counteracts impactenergy loss in the impeller.Energy consumption is thusreduced in comparison withthat for throttle damper con-trol. With double-inlet fans, multibladed louver dampersare usually used in place ofinlet vane controls to reducethe distance between bear -ings and the accompanyingcosts. Extreme throttling withvane opening angles greaterthan 60 degrees leads to in creased vibration of themachine and should be avoid ed.

2

Throttle damper control

Throttle dampers are cost-favourable but high-loss con-trol elements. Throttling dis-places the fan operating pointto a working point of consid-erably lower efficiency. Theuse of throttle dampers is notrecommended for high driveoutputs and longer lastingpartial load operation.

1

Comparison of controlmethods

Fans used in process en gin -eer ing plants almost alwaysrun in the partial load range, but even for operating pointsthat differ from the designpoint, they should run with the best possible efficiency. A com parison of controlmethods substantiates that, with regard to the energyrequirement, simple throttledampers are the least efficient.Control with multibladed louver dampers is more effective and inlet vane controls provide even betterresults. Optimal control is,however, without doubt, attained by speed control. This particularly low-loss control drastically reducesoperating costs, and invest-ment costs are relativelyquickly recovered ā€“ particularlywith fans that are in permanentoperation.

Wear protection pays

Large and special fans areoften exposed to the harshestwear attacks. Abrasive mediathat are carried in the air flow(e. g. clinker dust, quartz andalso corundum, wood andplastic shavings) assault thematerial.

Wear can render high-qualitymachine parts inoperative inthe shortest time. The result -ing costs are considerable. Toinvest in preventive mea suresis economical.

Venti Oelde uses variousmeasures to prevent abrasionto impellers and inner casingwalls through friction andimpact wear. Such protectivemeasures are decided on asearly as during the design ofour fans. Suitable materials,high-precision machining andoptimal blade geometry effect-ively increase service life.

Venti Oelde has verified thespecific properties of thevarious materials and combin- ations through many series oftests. Precise knowledge ofthe process conditions allowsus to select the most suitablemeasures for each applica-tion and load intensity.Examples of materials usedare surface-hardened steelsand steel alloys containingmanganese and also compos-ite materials that are sinter edat high temperature.

The optimized geometry ofour impellers guards againstcaking. The shape of ourinlet-boxes, impellers andvolute casings are so de-sign ed that wear and caking is minimized.

Hardfacing is ideal for fendingoff extensive wear attacks.Re placeable wear spirals, wear plates and deflectingplates are versatile in theirapplication. With particularlyabrasive media, surfaces areprotected by hardfacing usingtungsten or chromium carbide, whereby the service life of thecomponents is many times in -creased. Lining by armour ingis one of our quality features.

We can naturally hardface orreface impellers when re pairsare carried out.

Venti Oelde utilizes water andcompressed air injection andacoustic systems to detachsticky, adhering media. Inspecial cases, the targetedaddition of coarse, abrasivesubstances can allow a self-cleaning effect to be obtained.

Finally, our electronic monitor-ing systems reliably work forpreventive maintenance andservice at proven profitability.Installed vibration monitorscontrol the oscillation ampli -tude and give early warning of dreaded material caking inthe fan. Our dynamic balanc -ing systems reduce any im -balance and vibrations bymass compensation.

An important factor in theassessment of large and spec ial fans in industrialplants is noise control. Effi cient noise control pre-dominantly serves the health of employees and providesnoise relief in the workplace.

Sound-proofing requirementsfor workplaces and work loca-tions are now legally regulat -ed everywhere, although invarying forms. However, apartfrom the legal aspect, optimalsound-proofing is of consider-able importance.

All relevant noise protectionmeasures taken by VentiOelde simultaneously servethe practicality of the plantand components. The target -ed reduction and eliminationof noise, structure-bornenoise and vibrations meansfor Venti Oelde promotion of the efficiency of the plant.

We have examined the caus es of negative-effectvibra tions and interferencefrequen cy levels in large andspecial fans by means ofmodel experiments, measure-ments and computations. Onthis basis, we can carry outtargeted countermeasures.

Venti Oelde offers made-to-measure noise protection. Weadapt our products to the on-site conditions, operationalrequirements and the validregulations. In this way, ourplants even comply with inter-national regulations.

Noise protection is often afixed element of the deliveryscope of our large and specialfans. All major components ofour fans are noise optimiz ed

by our own technical deve l-opment. In addition, indivi d-ual noise control measuressimultaneously serve as in -sulation against heat loss. Indoing so, Venti Oelde offersparticularly budget-friendlysolutions.

In addition, we can carry outfurther measures, like theinsulation and decoupling ofstructure-borne noise from the floor foundation and toconnections. Carriers of emis-sions to the outside, like fresh

air intake ducting and stackscan be insulated, for example,by means of silencers. Wecan naturally completely en -case fans and drive units.

In rare cases a combinationof enclosure and insulation isappropriate. For the optimumuse of frequency-controlleddrives special noise-reducingmeasures are necessary.Venti Oelde provides noisecontrol for every application ā€“individual and efficient.
