Principals Report TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
This week we have celebrated teacher appreciation week! We are very lucky
at Lardner to have such dedicated teachers and we took the opportunity this
week to say Thank you by holding some beautiful morning teas. Thank you
to Janice, Kristy, Sarah & Susan for all they do for our students, we really
appreciate it.
CAMP
Our campers had a fabulous time. It was a great experience, full of adven-
ture and they seemed to have seen a lot of Canberra’s main attractions. A
BIG thank you to Mrs Sarah Hancock for supporting our students throughout
the week and spending a week away from her family. Also a great BIG thank
you to our students for being well behaved and representing LDPS amazing-
ly. All the other principals that went on the camp commented on how great
our students were.
NAPLAN
Over the week, our grade 3’s & 5’s have completed their NAPLAN testing.
They all did a great job in trying their best. This assessment is one of the
tools used to measure our performance in Literacy and Numeracy. The re-
sults normally arrive in late August. We will ensure students and families
receive these as soon as they arrive.
PIZZA LUNCH
On Tuesday, we celebrated our 100% attendees by having a Pizza Lunch. A
big congratulations to the students who took part. We have seen a positive
change in some student’s attendance since we started celebrating. I under-
stand it is hard with illness however, I appreciate your understanding with
our intention to celebrate as many positive things we can in your student’s
education. A big Thank you to Mrs Joanna Ash for her organisation.
SECONDARY DISCOVERY DAYS
We are very lucky now that we have so many Secondary schools inviting us
to take part in some of their days. Our 5/6 students are heading out to
Neerim South Secondary on Monday to participate in a discovery day. The
students will be able to enjoy a number of subjects and a yummy sausage
sizzle. I would like to thank parents for transporting your children to this to
ensure we keep costs to an absolute minimum. We will also attend other
secondary schools when the invitation arrives. It is a great experience even
if your child isn’t attending that particular school in the future.
COLD WEATHER – Tired Children
As the cold weather arrives, you may have noticed your child’s mood or en-
ergy levels have changed. With the rain it normally means longer days inside
and not as much physical activity. We try our best to experience both inside
and outside, however the weather doesn’t always allow it. If your child would
like to bring in their slippers/ugg boots to wear in the classroom, they are
most welcome too. Can I please remind people to take extra caution on the
road outside the school, unfortunately children don’t always look and can run
quickly to the car. Please really take care and be very vigilant at drop off and
pick up times.

ATHLETICS
Today we had 3 students complete at the division athletics in Newborough, we look forward in
hearing all about their experience and wish them all the best.
CATERPILLAR
Wendy has been busily organising a creative garden for our students. You will soon see a
colourful Caterpillar garden outside of the front office. Wendy has been lucky to secure some
donations from Bunnings warehouse for the soil and plants. The students are involved in the
painting and planting process so it is a great school community event. A big thank you to
Wendy for all her work so far.
PARENT COMMUNICATION
Schools are communities and we are all here for the students. We are driven by ensuring our
students are learning and setting themselves up for life. At times issues/ ideas come up and
sometimes we are unsure where to raise them. We try our best to communicate as much as
we can through newsletters, notes home and our official online platforms.
I have an open door policy and always welcome parents to come and speak to me. If I’m una-
ble to speak to you right then and there, I will always ensure we find a convenient time to talk.
CLASSROOM ISSUES If there is something you to need to speak about with your child’s classroom teacher, please
organise an appropriate time to discuss these matters properly. Sometimes at drop off times it
isn’t always ideal because learning begins right on 9.00am and we need students and teach-
ers in classroom focussed. Please don’t enter rooms intending to discuss matters, one it isn’t
appropriate for other students to hear your matter and two it interrupts precious learning time.
Our teachers are more than happy to organise a time that mutually suits and/or give you a
follow up phone call.
If there is something you would like to discuss with me, please come and see me and I will
organise a convenient time also.

Building/facilities/fundraising
Please come and see me and where appropriate I will organise a working group to complete
the activity. We are always open for suggestions on how to ensure our school is a great
school. As you know effective planning is required. I am in the process on putting together a
plan and a list of maintenance jobs. I will publish the jobs over the next couple of newsletters,
so if you can help out that will be fantastic.
Currently we don’t have a formal fundraising group, however we have some fantastic parents
who help out in various ways. If you have a suggestion in the future please don’t hesitate to
speak to me.
I have outlined the role of our school council below, we meet roughly once a month, and this
gives us a chance to ensure we are monitoring strategic planning, finance and policies. I put
together an agenda for this meeting and only tabled items are discussed. If you have anything
that you would like addressed, please come and see me.
What is the purpose of a school council? School councils operate under a legislative framework within the Victorian government school system. They play a key role in:
supporting the principal to provide the best possible educational outcomes for students
school accountability and improvement processes, and the endorsement of key school planning, evaluation and reporting documents. KEY FUNCTIONS
The school council has particular functions in setting and monitoring the school’s direction.
School councils have three main responsibilities:
Finance: overseeing the development of the school’s annual budget and ensuring proper rec-ords are kept of the school’s financial operation.
Strategic planning: participating in the development and monitoring of the school strategic plan.
Policy development and review: developing, reviewing and updating policies that reflect a school’s values and support the school’s broad direction outlined in its strategic plan.
Finance sub committee
The school council is responsible for overseeing the school’s financial performance. It is a le-gal and Department requirement that councils make sure that monies coming into schools are properly expended and authorised.
Most schools have a finance sub-committee which handles many of council’s routine financial responsibilities including the development of the annual budget.
Council monitors the school's financial performance against the budget in conjunction with the principal. School councils oversee the annual budget and are responsible for ensuring that schools have a functioning and effective system of internal controls. The subcommittee pre-sents the annual budget to the school council for discussion and approval.
Have a lovely weekend!
Kind regards,
Kelly Halliday

Year 5/6 Canberra Camp Several students from our school have recently undertaken, an education tour of our national capital, Can-berra. Students in year five and six were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The students who attended thoroughly enjoyed the experiences of visiting places like Parliament house, the High Court of Australia, the Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon, the War Memorial and learning about the creation and design of Canberra through the eyes of Walter Burley Griffin and his wife Marion. Our students have shared a number of stories this week at school about what they saw, felt and experi-enced first hand.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the na-tional capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the camp, we are happy to announce that the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per stu-dent under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program. This rebate will be paid directly to the school and reimbursed to the families of children who attended.
