    LAPORTE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Sacred Heart St. Joseph St. Peter

One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic - - - Uno, Santo, Católica, Apostólica

This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Family

of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. With our local Knights of Columbus

we are encouraging all our parish’s families to consecrate

themselves to the Holy Family. We all need the support,

protection and guidance they long to give.

O Lord Jesus, you lived in the home of Mary and Joseph of

Nazareth. There you grew up in age, wisdom and grace as you

prepared to fulfill your mission as our Redeemer. We entrust

    our family to you.

O Blessed May, you are the mother of our savior. At Nazareth

you cared for Jesus and nurtured him in the peace and joy of

your home. We entrust our family to you.

O Saint Joseph, you provided a secure and loving home for

Jesus and Mary, and gave us a model of fatherhood while

showing us the dignity of work. We entrust our family to you.

Holy family, we consecrate ourselves and our family to you.

May we be completely united in love that is lasting, faithful

and open to the gift of new life. Help us grow in virtue, to for-

give one another from our hearts, and to live in peace all of

our days. Keep us strong in faith, persevering in prayer, dili-

gent in our work, and generous to those in need. May our

home, O Holy Family, truly become a domestic church where

we reflect your example in our daily life. Amen

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

    First Reading –

    Genesis 15:1-6; 21:1-3

The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying: “Fear not, Abram! I am your shield; I will make your reward very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what good will your gifts be, if I keep on being childless and have as my heir the steward of my house, Eliezer?” Abram continued, “See, you have given me no offspring, and so one of my servants will be my heir.” Then the word of the LORD came to him: “No, that one shall not be your heir; your own issue shall be your heir.” The Lord took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.” Abram put his faith in the LORD, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness.

The LORD took note of Sarah as he had said he would; he did for her as he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time that God had stated. Abraham gave the name Isaac to this son of his whom Sarah bore him.

    Second Reading Romans 16:25-27

    Brothers and sisters:

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a

    place

    that he was to receive as an inheritance;

he went out, not knowing where he was to go.

By faith he received power to generate,

even though he was past the normal age

    --and Sarah herself was sterile--

for he thought that the one who had made the promise was

    trustworthy.

So it was that there came forth from one man,

    himself as good as dead,

descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky

and as countless as the sands on the seashore.

By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac,

and he who had received the promises was ready to offer

    his only son,

    of whom it was said,

“Through Isaac descendants shall bear your name.”

He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead,

and he received Isaac back as a symbol.

    Hark the Herald Angels Sing

    1. Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild God and sinners reconciled!” Joyful, all you nations, rise; Join the triumph of the skies; With the angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!” Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

    2. Christ, by highest heav'n adored, Christ the everlasting Lord: Late in time behold him come, Offspring of the Virgin's womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see: Hail the incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with us to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

    3. Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, Ris'n with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, Born that we no more may die, Born to raise each child of earth, Born to give us second birth. Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

  • What Child Is This 1. What child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring him laud, The babe, the son of Mary.

    2. Why lies he in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear; for sinners here The silent Word is pleading.

    3. So bring him incense, gold and myrrh; Come peasant, king to own him. The King of kings salvation brings; Let loving hearts enthrone him. Text: William C. Dix, 1827-1898

Angels We Have Heard on High 1. Angels we have heard on high Sweetly singing o'er the plains, And the mountains in reply Echo back their joyous strains. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.

    2. Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? Say what may the tidings be Which inspire your heav'nly song.

    3. Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee Christ, the Lord, the newborn King.

    4. See him in a manger laid Whom the choirs of angels praise; Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, While our hearts in love we raise.

Text: Les anges dans nos campagnes; French, c. 18th C.; tr. from Crown of Jesus Music , London, 1862

2nd Communion Hymn, if needed Away in a Manger 1. Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

    2. The cattle are lowing; the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love you, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

    3. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in your tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with you there. Text: St. 1-2, anonymous, st. 3, John T. McFarland, 1851-1913

    Gospel – Luke 2:22-40

When the days were completed for their purification

according to the law of Moses,

They took him up to Jerusalem

to present him to the Lord,

just as it is written in the law of the Lord,

Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,

and to offer the sacrifice of

a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,

in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon.

This man was righteous and devout,

    awaiting the consolation of Israel,

and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit

that he should not see death

before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.

    He came in the Spirit into the temple;

and when the parents brought in the child Jesus

to perform the custom of the law in regard to him,

He took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:

“Now, Master, you may let your servant go

in peace, according to your word,

for my eyes have seen your salvation,

which you prepared in sight of all the peoples,

a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and glory for your people Israel.”

    The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;

and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,

“Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel,

and to be a sign that will be contradicted

—and you yourself a sword will pierce—

so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

There was also a prophetess, Anna,

the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.

    She was advanced in years,

having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage,

and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.

    She never left the temple,

but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.

And coming forward at that very time,

she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child

to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions

of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee,

to their own town of Nazareth.

    The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;

and the favor of God was upon him.
