Proponents of this view might be surprised to find an argument, implicit in the Talmud, which suggests restricting one’s prayers to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur actually makes perfect sense. The Hebrew term for prayer, “tefila,” comes from the root, “pileil,” which means “to judge.” Presumably, events which impact our lives, but lie beyond our control, are a manifestation of God’s judgment. Prayer is the vehicle available to us to plead for a favorable verdict. If Rosh Hashanah is truly the Day of Judgment, and on Yom Kippur the decree is sealed, it is perfectly logical to pray, and pray hard, on those days. Attending synagogue any other days of the year would be akin to addressing the court when it is not in session; pretty much a waste of time. Of course, there is another opinion. Some Talmudic rabbis believed that God judges us every day, even at every moment. On this view, it makes perfect sense to pray every day. However, according to this perspective, there is absolutely nothing special about praying on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur. Perhaps the discipline of living one’s life as though under the eye of uninterrupted Divine judgment could legitimately be regarded as unbearably stressful. Or, perhaps constant anticipation of Divine feedback should be received as a welcome inducement to reflective practice. Regardless, our tradition seems to have sided with the opposing view that prayer matters most on the High Holidays. This is how the vast majority have voted (with their feet). The machzor, the special prayer book we’ve composed for these days, presumes we will spend many hours in worship. Though we aren’t ordinarily led by a professional hazzan, on these days we make sure we have one. The message is clear – our prayers matter the most on the High Holidays. So, why bother to pray every day? The Talmud (finally) settles on an answer: Because prayer makes the human condition beautiful. Throughout its 134-year history, Agudas has always relied on the dedication of its legacy families. Today a new generation is assuming this responsibility. Last year, younger people with names like Schottenstein and Weisman joined the shul — the same names that adorn the antique silver crowns and felt mantles on our Torah scrolls. Like the new arrivals, they too are attracted more by our people than our programs. In their case, the people who attract them are their parents, grandparents, siblings and cousins. PRESIDENT KENNY STEINMAN’S MESSAGE RABBI MITCH LEVINE’S MESSAGEIt is commonly assumed that rabbis disapprove of so called “twice a year” Jews, who attend services Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, but who are scarcely seen inside a synagogue on any other days.

So, why bother to pray every day? The Talmud (finally) settles on an answer: Because prayer makes the human condition beautiful.

My wife Alison and I look forward to our entire community; those who daven daily, weekly, twice-yearly, and those in between, gathering together in comradery and prayer. May we all be inscribed for a year of life, health, success, and happiness.

    People Before Programs

My family and I moved to Columbus on a Thursday. We knew no one, yet the next morning a friend of a friend dropped off challah and a bottle of wine. That Saturday at shul, another family invited us over for lunch. And so throughout our first few weeks, we were touched by meal invitations, babysitting offers and references for plumbers and the like.

By the High Holidays we joined Agudas Achim. Why? Not because of the building, the rabbi or the programming, but because of the people. Through their actions, they demonstrated that they knew and needed one another, and they were beginning to know and need us too. As much as we appreciated the initial cascade of kindness, what sealed the deal was how quickly others asked us to contribute: to help make a shiva minyan or to prepare a meal for a family with a new baby. Now we too felt known and needed.

Our experience is not unique. If anything, it exemplifies one way Agudas continues to attract new members. Columbus is a growing city and of the thousands of people who move here each year, a small number are not just Jewish, but actively Jewish. Some are young families, others are older, but Agudas gets a disproportionate share of these transplants. Thanks to our terrific rabbi and staff, they are happy to find a community where they can both build and experience a meaningful Jewish life. In the past year alone, new arrivals like the Bornsteins, Lamendolas, Rosichans and Weiners have joined our congregation and already volunteer with everything from leading services, to the kiddush committee to organizing family programming at a nearby playground. We are all excited to see who will arrive this coming year.

Yet new arrivals are only part of our success. • CHIEF ADMINISTRATOR’S MESSAGE Since June of 2013 Agudas Achim has welcomed 68 new members. We are often asked how we have been achieving that success when so many other synagogues nationwide are losing members. One answer can be seen through our Statement of Core Values just approved by the Board of Trustees.“Agudas Achim aspires to be a traditional, egalitarian, friendly and participatory congregation.”

Now repeat that five times to yourself. Commit it to your memory. This is not just a statement to be included in board meeting minutes and then stuffed away in a drawer. It is our synagogue’s essence, our reason for being and what sets us apart. We not only retain Judaism’s historic mode of prayer and observance, but also we revere the history and TRADITIONS of our 134-year old congregation. From longstanding programs such as Boys Night Out and Flowers for the Living to the Generations dinner for families who have multiple generations living in Columbus, we maintain a deep respect for the traditions of our congregation. When new realities impact these traditions, we endeavor to be flexible so that they may live on. Such was the case by successfully adapting Minyannaires to a Sunday afternoon program. A guest passing through commented that “one feels so much love and dedication put in through the years.”We are staunchly EGALITARIAN not just in women’s ritual participation in services but more widely by accepting with open arms anyone who wants to be part of our community. Just look around the sanctuary and you will see an array of ages, races, nationalities, sexual orientations and even religions. Can any shul match the effusive and FRIENDLY greetings that individuals receive from Rabbi Levine and Ron Rudolph! Furthermore, our members are also authentic and natural in reaching out to new faces in the crowd. A visitor to the shul recently sent a contribution with the following sentiment – “We all felt very welcomed by everyone and were impressed with how warm and inviting the synagogue felt.”Annually we assemble a list of everyone who has volunteered at some point during the year on behalf of Agudas Achim. This year’s list contained 167 names! That’s what I call PARTICIPATORY! Whether it is leading services, helping to prepare Kiddush luncheons, setting up for the Purim on Broad Street Talent Show, packing yellow candles for Yom HaShoah or helping to make a yahrzeit minyan, our members can be counted upon. If a synagogue is as strong as its members, we are Olympian heavy weightlifters. On behalf of the entire Agudas Achim staff, best wishes for a year filled with goodness and health.B’Shalom,Ari

Congregation Agudas Achim is a traditional, egalitarian synagogue affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

YAHRZEITSSeptember/October/November/DecemberDuring the week, evening services are scheduled only when it coincides with a Yahrzeit on which a synagogue member has requested that they would like a Minyan to recite Mourner’s Kaddish for their loved one. This approach honors the correct Yahrzeit dates while affording members the opportunity to attend Minyan specifically when their presence is most crucial to enable a fellow community member to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish. Observers would attend Minyan the evening prior to the Yahrzeit dates listed below (following the Jewish lunar calendar) and/or on the morning of the Yahrzeit. Please note that this list reflects only Yahrzeits for parents, spouses, children and siblings. On Shabbat afternoons congregants meet at Agudas Achim for Woodchoppers Talmud Study. Why is it called Woodchoppers?

“An old book saved from the millions burned by the Nazis, and now housed at the YIVO library in New York, bears the stamp THE SOCIETY OF WOODCHOPPERS FOR THE STUDY OF MISHNA IN BERDITCHEV. That the men who chopped wood in Berditchev, an arduous job that required no literacy, met regularly to study Jewish law demonstrates the ongoing pervasiveness of study of the Oral Law in the Jewish community.” – Joseph Telushkin

Knowledge of Hebrew/Aramaic is not required and new participants are always welcome to join. Call the synagogue office for specific meeting times and feel free to speak with Rabbi Levine if you have any questions.

  • JEWISH LUNCH CLUB (JLC) Jewish students from Bexley Middle School (7th and 8th graders) join together once a month for topical conversation about the Torah portion, Jewish holidays, current events and/or thoughts that are on the students’ minds. Occasionally they are visited by special guests! During their monthly discussions, the students also enjoy pizza and chips. JLC is facilitated by Stacy Abroms Bandler.

2015-2016 dates are: September 1, October 13, November 10, December 1, January 5, February 2, March 1, April 5 and May 3.In order to sustain this program – which provides a kosher lunch and Jewish programming throughout the school year at Bexley Middle School – we count on your support. Sponsorships are gratefully accepted. You do not need to be a 7th or 8th grade parent/grandparent to sponsor!

Full JLC sponsorship is $175. Donations in any amount are accepted. Sponsors and donors will be recognized in the weekly synagogue email.

To sponsor a JLC, email [email protected] or call Naomi at 237.2747, ext. 17.

PRESIDENT KENNY STEINMAN’S MESSAGEContinued from page 1Both of these member types teach us that synagogues today succeed when they create and nurture relationships among people. Yes, Agudas does have fun, fulfilling programs on everything from Mahjong to Talmud — try one soon! But we need to recall that these programs are not ends in themselves. They are ultimately about strengthening our connections with one another.

This High Holiday season I hope you will join me in considering how you can contribute to strengthen relationships among our members. Sponsor or prepare a meal for a member in need. Visit one of our members at Wexner Heritage Village. Invite some new members along with friends for a Friday night potluck. At services, introduce yourself to someone new.

In 5776, I look forward to our working together to build a meaningful Jewish life. Happy New Year!
