David Binus, PresidentDear congregants,Happy New Year, and I hope the year brings you good health and happiness. Here at the synagogue things have been going just fine, we are getting your pledges in on a timely fashion and we are able to pay the bills to keep the doors open. We continue to get a minion most Shabbats but we still would love to see more of you to come and enjoy the special day while experiencing the great sermons given by Rabbi Josh. We are blessed to have a kind and compassionate individual to lead us spiritually. Please make an effort to come to services a little more often to help enrich your day and enjoy the comfort that the synagogue can help to enhance your lives.

Try to get involved with the programs the Rabbi leads, the Jewish book club, bible study, and Hebrew classes, you would be amazed how you feel after each session.

Also, keep selling lottery tickets, they are selling well, and helps put money in the general fund to help balance the budget. I want to thank all those who have done a great job on selling their share and more, you are to be commended for your efforts.

Please, also remember anyone who is ill or you think needs someone to visit to cheer them up. Call Donna Cohen, Carol Lipitz, or let Ron in the office know so we can take care of making sure the people in need are not forgotten by the synagogue. Carol and Donna have been doing a great job of performing this mitzvah and I applaud your services to the community.

Happy New Year, David

We have officially formed a Bikur Cholim committee under the

supervision of Rabbi Wohl and chaired by Donna Cohen . Bikur

Cholim ,“visiting the sick” with the support of our congregation will help provide care and comfort to the members of our community who are ill, homebound, isolated or members of our community in

distress.

Please join me in being a member of this committee in any way you can. I am asking for people who would like to sign up to carry out the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim. Let

me know if you would like to visit, make calls, bake or deliver food to

our homebound .

Our goal for now is to make sure all the members of our

Congregation/Community will be seen at least once a month and food delivered a few times a year

for Holidays or Shabbat. Most importantly we want to help make those members who cannot join

us in Synagogue continue to feel a sense of connectedness to our

Jewish community.

If you are interested in volunteering, please respond to my e-mail at [email protected]. We will then be in contact with you.

Carol Lipitz

We Must Remove Our MasksThe holiday of Purim is filled with drinking, grogger shaking and my favorite part; eccentric costumes. But what is Purim really about? We all know that Purim is fun, but underneath the story of Mordecai and Esther is a more serious message. First of all, the very name Esther comes from the Hebrew root “to hide.” The fact that Esther assimilates and hides her Jewish identity, allows her to become the Queen and gain such lofty status in Persian society. In addition, God hides his face from the Jewish people; in fact, the book of Esther is the only one in the Bible that never once mentions the name of God. It’s as if God is telling us that we Jews are responsible for our own redemption. So as we celebrate Purim, we go into this most joyous celebration with a sense that something is hidden.

The importance of selective concealment has been prevalent throughout Jewish history. In the late 1700s the dawn of the enlightenment spawned the

Haskalah Movement in Germany. The Haskalah was led by Moses Mendelssohn, who urged Jews in Western Europe to leave their ghetto lifestyle and assimilate into the larger society while maintaining their Jewishness in private settings. As late as the mid¬-nineteenth century the Russian philosopher, Judah Leib Gordon, proclaimed the Haskalah ideal: “Be a Jew in your home and a man in the street.” Gordon believed that in the diaspora, a Jew could only make his way by concealing his Jewish identity when associating with his non Jewish neighbors.

However, the story of Esther teaches us that it’s not enough to just be a Jew at home in private, we must also be proud of our Jewishness in the street, in the public sphere. Esther rose to power by assimilating. But Esther only saved the Jewish people when she removed her mask and revealed her Jewish identity to King Achashverosh. Esther became a hero only when she had the courage to publicly reveal her Jewish identity.

I hope that everyone will join us on March 23rd at 6pm as we read from the Megillah and celebrate the joyous holiday of Purim. Pat Himes will be helping me lead some fun cover songs and there will be libations, crazy costumes and masks. However, after Purim, we Jews must remove the masks that we wear. May we learn from Esther and be proud of our Jewishness not just in the home but in the larger community. Let us wear our Chai necklaces out in public.

SISTERHOOD NEWS: EVERYTHING YOU WANTED

TO KNOW ABOUT THE TORAH FUND BUT WERE

AFRAID TO ASK!

The purpose of the TORAH FUND is to raise money to

support and financially assist JEWISH seminary students. The fund benefits those studying to be RABBIS as well as CANTORS.

There are three Jewish educational facilities; one in New York, one in Buenos Aires, and one in Los Angelos. Recipients of the funds

say that they never forget the help they received and could not have completed their studies without it. Historically, the Agudath Achim Sisterhood members have donated to the fund in the CHAI amount of $18 or in the DONOR PIN amount of a $180. For the seminary students, every dollar of every contribution counts no

matter the amount. You may have already received a letter from our

TORAH FUND chair, Dianne Rudel. Your pledge will help us

reach our goal. Thanks for all you do! Ilissa

HIGH HOLIDAY PRAYERBOOKS ARE

A GREAT WAY TO SAY: MAZEL TOV!

A High Holiday prayerbook can be dedicated for a donation of $36 to the Agudath

Achim Sisterhood. Isn’t it fun to open the book and see your

name in print? Don’t let a birth or graduation go by without a

meaningful dedication!

Mark your Calendars for The 2016 Jewish Film Festival! Join Us for Thursday Night at the Movies

February 25, March 3, 10 & 17 2016 Penn State Devorris Downtown Center

ALL FILMS BEGIN AT 7:00pm

FEBRUARY 25th - ABOVE and BEYOND Documentary, 90 minutes, English made in 2014. In 1948, just three years after the liberation of Nazi death camps, a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. As members of Machal – “volunteers from abroad” – this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and renewed Jewish pride.

MARCH 17th - DELI MAN Documentary, 91 minutes, English, made in 2014. Jewish culture reflects the heart of a vital ethnic history. In Houston, Texas, third-generation deli man Ziggy Gruber has built arguably the finest delicatessen restaurant in the U.S. His story - augmented by the stories of iconic delis such as Katz's, 2nd Avenue Deli, Nate 'n Al, Carnegie, and the Stage - embodies a tradition indelibly linked to its savory, nostalgic foods.

MARCH 3rd - My Favorite Year Comedy, 92 minutes, English, made in 1982. It is 1954, and the larger-than-life, swashbuckling movie star Alan Swann (Peter O’Toole) is set to make his first television appearance on the hugely popular show, The Comedy Cavalcade. Given Swann's reputation as a wild, unpredictable alcoholic, the producers give their new writer, young Benjy Stone, the job of babysitting Swann and getting him to the show on time and sober. The experience is far more stressful than Benjy expected, but after some adventures, he and Swann both learn some valuable lessons and develop a friendship.

Join us for a great dinner next door at the Heritage Discovery Center beginning at 5:15pm. We will have wine and appetizers, with dinner catered by Paula & Dave Binus.

It is the best bargain in town with dinner only $20.00/per person and film admission only $5.00/person (films free to students).

Reserve your space by calling the Federation at 515-1182 or email: [email protected]

MARCH 10th - RUN BOY RUN Drama, 107 minutes, Polish & German with English subtitles, made in 2013. Escaping the Warsaw ghetto at the behest of his father, 9-year old Srulik flees to the woods where he learns to hide from SS patrols and scour for food. He travels the countryside working as a farmhand under an ever-present threat of persecution. Some will help him survive and others will betray him. Just when it seems his childhood memories and identity could be lost forever, Jurek’s harrowing journey culminates in a powerhouse conclusion and postscript.
