Nature lovers exploreWestCoastThe SANParks HonoraryRangers: West Coast Re-gion recentlyhostedanori-entation and informationday at their offices.

In attendance were 14 pro-spective members and appli-cants as well as HonoraryRangers (HRs) from the Agul-has, Boland and Table Moun-tain regions.

Pamela Rutledge and Anél-di Steenberg of the West Coastregion presented the pro-gramme and discussed va-rious topics including theSANParks HR corps, ecology, and the West Coast NationalPark (WCNP).

Proceedingsincludedanin-formative bus trip throughthe WCNP, where Langebaanresident and former WCNPranger, Eddie Papier, sharedhis knowledge and interest-ing anecdotes from the past.

Sites visited included Post-

berg, the OudepostFort I at Kraalbaai, the VOC beacon atGeelbek and Preek-stoel.

They also learnedthat the southernright whale can beidentified by its totallack of a dorsal fin, stubby square-endedflippers, and the wart-like growths on theirheads.

The four islandsun-der the WCNP’s man-agement – Marcus,Malgas, Jutten andSchaapen – are clear-ly visible from theview point in Postberg. Hereguests learned, for example, that Schaapen Island has oneof the largest known breedingcolonies of black-backedgulls, and Marcus Island hasthe single largest residentpopulation of the rare black

oystercatcher in South Afri-ca.

Rutledge also mentionedSANPark’s annual PelicanWatch programme, which isa management strategyaimed at controlling preda-tion by great white pelicans

on Cape gannet andCape cormorant nest-lings.

“Park staff and vol-unteers work in fiveday shifts on the [Jut-ten and Malgas] is-lands during the seabirdbreedingseason, physically chasingpelicans away fromthe breeding colo-nies.”

All those who at-tended agreed thereis a definite need fora day such as this, es-pecially for prospec-tive HRs and otherswith an interest in

the conservation of naturaland historical heritage.

Plan to save Leentjiesklip chaletsEVAN NAUDÉ

LANGEBAAN – Chaletowners at theLeentjiesklipholiday resort may soonlose more than just themoney they spent, as theeroded coastline creepscloser to their homes.

On 10 October Weslanderreported on the severe ero-sion that is claiming moreand more of the coastline infront of the resort.

“We love this place but wecan’t keep spending moneywithout help from the munic-ipality,” said Nollies van derMerwe of the LeentjiesklipHome Owners’ Association.“We’ve spent close to half amillion rand from our ownpockets since 2008.”

According to him the chaletowners have brought in 70tons of sand to strengthen the

dune line, planted grass andother plants to stabilise loosesoil and built a secondary setof stairs that has since beenwashed away. They also in-stalled stormwater drains todirect flow away from the ar-ea and metal rods and nettingas an emergency measure.

Chairman Peter Jack ownsone of the chalets closest tothe eroding coastline. “Thehigh-water mark is a techni-cal issue,” said Jack. “It be-comes a case of whose respon-sibility it is.” Jack believesaction needs to be taken im-mediately, regardless ofbudget restraints. “The coun-cil is aware of the problem, sothey need to act. It will costa whole lot more once peoplestart losing their cottages.”

In April 2012, the chaletowners met with SaldanhaBay Municipality’s DeputyMayor, Rosil Jager, on the is-

sue. Jager al-legedly saidprovincialgovernmenthad set asideR2million tocombat coast-line erosion.Jager con-firmed toWeslanderthat a meet-ing did takeplace, but de-clined any further comment.

Repeated requests for com-ment on the matter from themunicipality have provenfruitless.

However, a plan of actionseems to be on the horizon asenvironmental consultantsCommon Ground completedan Environmental Mainte-nance and Management Plan(EMMP) in June. The plan in-cludes a specialist report bybotanist Nick Holme and con-ceptual engineering solu-tions by coastal engineeringfirm WSP Group Africa.

The study found that theocean is steadily swallowingan increasing area of thecoastline, especially in thecorner of the bay in front ofLeentjiesklip, the MelckStreet steps and the AlabamaStreet slipway.

Possible measures pro-posed for Leentjiesklip in-clude dune reshaping and theremoval of an access road, asubmerged storm protectionbarrier (gabions or geocon-tainer bags), dune revegeta-

tion and a gabion wall. The demolition of endan-

gered structures, is anotherproposal. This “managed re-treat” would be based on anassessment of erosion trendsand the principles of setbacklines to pre-empt homes cra-shing onto the beach.

The plan is expected to besubmitted to the WesternCape Department of Environ-mental Affairs and Develop-ment Planning (DEA&DP) forauthorisation.

This will allow for furtherinvestigation by the munici-pality as well as the finalisa-tionof the preferredscenario.

Theintentionof thisEMMPis to allow initial construc-tion works to alleviate ero-sion concerns, as well as au-thorisation for ongoing main-tenance requirements for thechosen intervention.

The DEA&DP will there-fore be asked to authorise aten-year period of environ-mental management andmaintenance at the threesites.

The proposed management plan for Leentjiesklip includes apermanent hard protection barrier, the revegetation of dunecrests and more effective storm water management.GRAPHIC:COMMON GROUND EMMP

Be“too cool to smoke” thismonthBe Cancer Aware, one ofSouth Africa’s cancer in-formation hubs, will bekicking off their secondan-nual “Too cool to smoke”campaign as part of Inter-national Lung CancerAwareness Month.

Theinitiativeinvitessmok-ers in South Africa to quit forthe day on Thursday 14 No-vember.

According to Dr. GeorgiaDemetriou, an oncologist atWits Donald Gordon MedicalCentre, “the burden of lungcancer is high, but awarenessof the disease is very low ascomparedwithotherdiseasessuch as breast cancer.

“This is why it’s importantto get involved in awarenessinitiatives to help educateand inform people about thisdeadly disease, where earlydetection is key.”

By quitting even for a day, smokers will be taking an im-portant step towards a heal-thier life . Within 20 minutesof quitting, blood pressure re-turns to normal, and withineight hours, the carbon mo-noxide level in the blooddrops. After 48 hours, the abi-lity to smell and taste is im-proved. From two weeks tothree months after quitting, lung function increases.

Non-smokers can also getinvolved and help promotethe cause by donning their

shades to work on the 14thand showing the world thatthey are “too cool to smoke”.You can also upload photos tothe Be Cancer Aware Face-book page and motivate o-thers to do the same.

Tobacco use can cause seri-ous health implications andkills nearly six million peopleper year. About one persondies every six seconds due totobacco, which accounts forone in ten adult deaths world-wide . With this in mind, it isno wonder that research hasshown that at least 80% oflung cancer diagnoses are at-tributedtocigarettesmoking.

Lung cancer and other res-piratory problems can also af-fect non-smokers, as there isno safe level of exposure to to-bacco. Toxins from the ciga-rettes are able to enter thebloodstream and contributeto the thickening of artery

walls, which accelerates theprocess of various heart andlung problems .

Furthermore, studies illus-trate that lung cancer is nolonger a male-dominated di-sease – there has been an in-crease in female smokers, leading to a rise in thenumber of women who are de-veloping this typeofcanceraswell .

A recent survey by the Med-ical Research Councilshowed that nearly half ofWestern Cape learners ingrade 8 to 10 smoke. Addingto this, research conductedfor the 2008 National YouthRisk Behaviour Survey foundthat one fifth of South Africanhigh school pupils are smo-kers.

Spring clean tokeepsnakesatbayAs the cold wet wintercomes to an end, springbrings with it a new seasonin the circle of life.

Reptiles such as snakes arecoming out of hibernation tohunt for a much-neededspring meal.Snakes provide an impor-

tant natural balance in ourenvironment, controllingvermin, rodents and otherdisease-carrying pests.A snake’s diet varies from

species to species but in-cludes rats, mice, birds, moles, slugs, snails, frogs etc.Snakesareencouraged into

built-up areas by the abun-dance of their food source.Humans unintentionally cre-ate a snake- friendly environ-ment with unkempt or over-grown gardens containingbuilding material, rubble orcompost. This, in turn, is a

suitable habitat for those lit-tlepests likerats,miceandex-otic birds.Snakes are attracted to ne-

glected areas for food and toavoid human confrontation.Thereisnorealwayofkeep-

ing snakes off your property, but if you keep your grass cutshort, treeswell trimmed andclean up all building rubble, snakes are less likely tomakeyour property their home.Very few snake species

could be considered a threatto humans, as most do nothave venom glands.Contrary to popular belief,

a snakes’ instinct is to defenditself rather than to attack. As such, killing a snake is

nothing to be proud of as youare dealing with an animalthathasnoarms, fingers, feet, legs or eyelids.Let us not succumb to igno-

Prepare for ‘silly season’ visitors

Summer’s here and thekitesareupagain inLange-baan.

Restaurants are abuzz withforeign languages and trafficis on the increase over week-ends.

This signals the coming ofthe holiday season whenLangebaan is alive with eco-nomic potential. The monthahead will see a hive of activi-ty as the village prepares it-self for the silly season.

Langebaners have twochoices: be irritated by theholiday onslaught, or join inthe fun and have a great fes-tive season. One thing is forsure, thesilly seasonwillhap-pen and we all have a role toplay in welcoming the manyvisitors to our village.

The Saldanha Bay TourismOrganisation (SBTO) is hardatworkpreparingfortheholi-day makers whilst the Com-munityPolicingForum(CPF)is preparing for their safetyand security. The police, pro-

vincial and municipal trafficdepartments, municipal lawenforcement and the WestCoast National Park will joinforces to enforce law and or-der over the season.

The Saldanha Bay Munici-pality (SBM) will be trainingeight selected members of thelocal youth as temporary lawenforcement officers to assistwith this important task. TheSBTO and CPF are planninga “welcome the visitors” op-eration to kick the season off.

The municipality will bemaking a major effort to en-sure that the village isgroomed and clean. I wouldlike to request Langebanersto assist in this task as theSBM does not have the man-powertoget toeverynookandcranny. Firstly, you can as-sist by looking after your ownhome patch and pavement.

Secondly, Langebaners liv-ing next to green areas canjoin hands and “chicken pa-rade” their adjacent openspaces. Refuse bags can beplaced at predetermined are-as where the SBM will collectthem. Should the refuse in aparticular area be too muchplease notify the LangebaanSBM office so that special ar-

rangements can be made. Weneed tocomplete thisexerciseby the second week of Decem-ber. Please feel free to contactme if any coordination is re-quired.

A public meeting was heldon 28 October with the resi-dents of Seaview Park andLangebaan North. The meet-ing was attended by the Exec-utive Mayor, Francois Schip-pers,membersof theMayoralCommittee responsible forservice delivery, senior SBMofficials and over 100 resi-dents. Various service deli-very issues were discussed ofwhich sport facilities, urbanplanning for LangebaanNorth and the Human Settle-ment Plan were the most con-tentious. The SBM sees theproblem areas put forward ina serious light and will makea concerted effort to addressthem. Community feedback

meetings in this regard willfollow. An accusation wasmade that this meeting wasutilised for political gain. This is refuted outright. Themost senior role players whomust address the issues werepresent.

My December “Town Talk”article will address the im-pact of the recently approvedIndustrial Development Zone(IDZ) on Langebaan.

Strandloper sewage/stormwater outflow : We re-ported last month that theLRRA still questions the le-gality of the discharge oftreated sewageandnowinad-dition theretosomestormwa-ter into the Langebaan La-goon, aRamsar site and inter-nationally recognisedMarine Protected Area.

These activities were re-cently reported to various en-vironmental law enforce-mentagencieswhovisitedthearea and are currently inves-

was recently announced anddeclared open by PresidentZuma on 31 October 2013 .

This eventwith fanfare andpoliticking confirmed thefearswe continuously report-ed on during the comment pe-riod on the IDZ and its feasi-bility.

Wehope thatweshallneverget to a point when we ask:“Howdidweallowthis tohap-pen yet again?” This blatantand disgraceful abuse of state

and public assets for cheappolitical gain rudely remind-ed me of the recent and simi-lar incident when our ownward committee public meet-ing was hijacked to serve asa platform for party politics.

Progress: Although the fi-nal outcome of the pavingproject in Main and DwarsStreets fellwayshortof the in-itial plans presented by Crea-tive profile (due to we weretold bugdetary reasons), wesee that the paving is now fi-nally completed a mere fourmonths after inception.

Angling isgettingback tonormal

October has been back tonormal. The main largefishtakenwerekob, mostlyfrom the Spreeuwalle area.

The best fish was a speci-men of 27 kg caught byMichael Viljoen. Howeverthere were also kob caughtsouth, especially for those ar-dent anglers who are pre-pared to get up out of a warmbed at 02:00 and face the windand single-digit tempera-tures. These fish are a muchnicer eating fish as theyranged from 4–6 kg.

Some geelbek were caughtamong the kob but, in con-trast to last year, I have notheard of the anglers having aproblem with elf.

White stumpnose havemade their appearance andgood numbers have beencaught. Generally the sizehave been smaller than previ-ous years and only during thesecond spring-tide periodwere large fish caught. Thebest specimen of the monthwas a fish of 1,7 kg.

During the first half of themonth a couple of steenbraswere caught, but they nowseem to have disappeared.

There is a problem which isstarting to worry me – thenumber of professional boatsthat have been targetingstumpnose over the last threemonths. The reason for this isthat there has been nothingelse for them to catch as thesnoek disappeared earlierthan usual and the large sum-mer fish have not made an ap-pearance yet. I understandtheir dilemma as they have

families to feed, but the prob-lem is whether the resourcecan take the hammering thatit receives from them. Mostdays there are four or moreboats each with 8 to 10 crew, catching stumpnose. A goodday could mean as many as athousand fish per boat. Boatangling is probably the great-est holiday activity and if thestumpnose become overfished and numbers decreaseto a level where they are nolonger an easy target, it couldhave a huge effect on ourtown’s economy.

November is the monthwhen all your local anglerstry to go to sea as often as pos-sible before the mad seasonarrives. The main target willbe kob and stumpnose. As inprevious years yellowtailhave been spotted in the la-goon, but none have beenhooked. Huge shoals of thesegreat fish have been aroundDassen Island for the pastcouple of months so we can allhold thumbs that some ofthem will enter our waters.Tight lines and may the

sharks not take your trophyfish. – Vincent Taylor

Ek stel voor dat jy liefsjou handsak ophang, eer-der as om dit op die vloerof kombuistafel neer te sit.

Vee gereeld jou handsakse onderkant met ’n warmlappie en ontsmettings-middel af.
