GCC Countries Adopting Sustainable Development Codes for Construction Projects, Looking at Better Use of Outdoor Space, Say Industry Experts

GCC countries are increasingly looking to sustainable and environmentally responsible developments as the

region’s construction sector booms on the back of social infrastructure spending, according to industry experts.

Overall, as much as USD 2.87 trillion worth of projects are in the design, bid or construction stage in the GCC up to 2025, according to Zawya Projects data, with USD 1.53 trillion worth of real-estate projects under construction.

According to a report by Ventures Middle East, “GCC Focus on Sustainability in Construction,” GCC governments have acted swiftly in the past three years to embrace sustainable construction through education and legislation, creating business demand for “green” development.

Increased spending on social infrastructure and efforts to improve living standards and use outdoor space more effectively are also driving the construction market and boosting outdoor projects, according to regional experts.

“Sustainability is becoming more and more important to the Saudi market, we are seeing dramatic changes in how developers approach the market and how outdoor space is used,” said Robb Marinko, Landscape Architecture Manager at Dar Al Riyadh – Architecture and Design Services. “We are trying to create outdoor environments that are comfortable for people to visit, places where people are comfortable to sit, children are free to play and where you have given a reason for people to come and use that public space.”

Environmental sustainability has also become a key issue for Qatar. Social

infrastructure projects have been given significant allocations in the country’s budgets to ensure that Qatar upgrades in every sphere to raise the standards of living of its citizens in accordance with its Vision 2030. This includes increasing the provision of resources such as public parks and making a more appealing public realm.

Strong environmental foundations have also been built in by adopting green codes of construction and environmentally friendly technology in the construction of stadia and other infrastructure to host the World Cup 2022 event.

``GCC countries are increasingly embracing sustainable and green building development as they look to build long-term economic growth and improve social infrastructure,” said Nicholas Webb, Managing Partner of Streamline Marketing Group, the organisers of the Outdoor Design & Build Show 2015. “As governments look to further diversify their economies and cater to growing populations, we can expect this sector to become increasingly important in the future.”

The Outdoor Design & Build Show, taking place in Dubai this year from 13 to 15 April, is the leading B2B tradeshow focused purely on design and build for all public and private spaces including parks, urban areas, hotels, schools, sports venues, and major residential projects.

Hosted and fully backed by Dubai Municipality, the Outdoor Design & Build Show is the only dedicated international platform in the Middle East that caters to the entire spectrum of hard and soft landscape products and services. Major confirmed exhibitors include Tanseeq LLC, Gebal Group, Waterman LLC, Transgulf and Resysta Building Materials amongst others.

Celebrating a welcoming outdoor lifestyle that promotes the wellness of residents in a vibrant, unique and trendy development, the soon-to-be-

launched Town Square redefines the concept of integrated neighbourhoods in the city. With all amenities in walking distance, it showcases the best of everything that Dubai has to offer in one inspiring community development like no other.

To drive the development of Town Square, as well as other projects in the pipeline, Nshama has appointed its strategic leadership team comprising veteran professionals who bring over 100 years of collective experience in Dubai and internationally. Led by Chief Executive Officer Fred Durie and Chief Operations Officer Abubakr Sidahmed, among the masterminds behind prestigious landmarks such as Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, Arabian Ranches and Emirates Living, the team will craft a new dimension in an integrated community development that transforms the lives of residents.

Spread over about 750 acres, Town Square brings a new suburban downtown residential destination with its mix of 3 and 4-bedroom townhouses and mid-rises with 1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments offering tremendous value across all touch-points. A smart, sustainable and connected community, it focuses on promoting an active outdoor lifestyle, as well as arts and culture. A central park and wide open green spaces add to the quality of life of residents assuring them a refreshing getaway.

Fred Durie said: “Nshama is ushering in a new development approach to Dubai that draws on the Dubai Plan 2021 and supports the key theme of establishing the city as a ‘preferred place to live, work and visit.’ Focused on end-users, particularly families and young people who cherish an active outdoor lifestyle, our new project brings the novel concept of a modern town square to Dubai.

“Meeting the demand for value homes from professionals and families along the city’s major growth corridor, Town Square distinguishes itself across all aspects of its design, development and after-sales service. It also meets the significant demand for middle-income value housing with quality and affordable price points as our prime consideration.”

He added: “Town Square is a smart, intelligent community that meets the aspirations of the young, trendy and value-conscious customer, enabling them to shift from a rent-based lifestyle to homes that provide them a sense of belonging. All our projects are similarly planned to meet the growing middle-income

demand for end-user homes, led by our vision to bring a new lifestyle choice to Dubai that transforms the lives of people. ”

Town Square will feature over 3,000 townhouses and 18,000 apartments in addition to substantial retail, hospitality and commercial space. The masterplan also envisages a central and vibrant hub with shopping and dining districts, plazas, greenbelts, mosques, educational institutions, healthcare centres, entertainment and outdoor sports facilities. With a total land area of 31 million sq ft, it will have a high land-to-building ratio, thus opening up more open spaces for a greener community.

Town Square will be defined by elegant landscaping by world-renowned urban and landscape architects. Natural and paved running tracks crisscross the development, which will feature outdoor gymnasiums, skateboard parks, children’s play areas, relaxing green spaces, community swimming pools and access to cycle tracks that complement the popular Al Qudra cycle track.

Setting a new precedent in value developments, Town Square is centrally located in New Dubai near Al Barsha, in easy proximity to popular malls as well as the Al Maktoum International Airport, which is less than 20 minutes away. It is picturesquely designed on the lines of trendy lifestyle centres that exude positivity and a vibrant outdoor lifestyle.

• Spread over about 750 acres, Town Square will feature townhouses and apartments for a quality lifestyle and will be defined by a central park and green belts

• Town Square is highlighted by smart technology, green building standards and active outdoor lifestyle choices

• Nshama appoints strategic leadership team with over 100 years of collective experience in mega-project and integrated community development

• Nshama, a private developer of integrated lifestyle communities differentiated by a focus on offering distinct value propositions for aspiring home-owners, is unveiling the first-of-its-kind and largest town square development in Dubai.

First timer at the 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Creative Director Kamelia Bin Zaal will showcase her garden design in May in London,

United Kingdom, at the world’s most renowned gardening event. As a result of her passion for greenery, numerous projects, and a diploma in garden design at London’s renowned Inchbald School of Design, Emirati landscape designer Kamelia has been selected to partake at the celebrated flower show.

“I am so proud and honoured to exhibit at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show,” says Kamelia Zaal. “The theme of my garden is The Beauty of Islam. I am continuously inspired by our heritage and wanted to creatively translate my interpretation of our peaceful religion into a beautiful garden design. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to shine a positive light on Arab culture and Islam. Traditional Islamic gardens were a representation of the relationship between humankind and the earth, not only through the gardens productivity, but also through the use of the senses and in its beauty. Creating space of multiple uses but yet still a place of calm and reflection.”

The Al Barari sponsored garden is based on a traditional Islamic pattern set into a 45-degree angle that breaks away from the traditional courtyard quadrant. The design uses both modern and classic materials originating from countries touched by Arab culture and Islam.

Kamelia has incorporated poetry through the use of “The Flock of Meanings” poem by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, which will be engraved into stone. Calligraphy sculpture and the movement and sound of water which are used to guide the senses through the garden to a final resting place to contemplate and relax.

The variety in plant species is indicative of the spread of Islam as well as the growth of the Arab empire through trade – most famously through the spice route which spread, by sea and over land from the Indian Ocean, Far East, India, the Arabian Gulf, and Red sea and by land onto Europe.

Zaal is working with multi-award winning landscape construction and design company The Outdoor Room, professional calligrapher Hamda Abdulla Al Hashmi, Green Works from Al Barari for the garden design, and renowned plant nursery Kelways for the show.

Kamelia began her career as a freelance garden designer working on residential villas until she established her own landscape architectural practice, Second Nature in 2006. She later formed an association with her family’s

prestigious property development company, Al Barari, where Second Nature, now part of Green Works, created the lush botanic surrounds and themed gardens that the address has become recognised for.

In 2013, Kamelia was featured on the front cover of The UK Garden Design Journal for her work with Al Barari and several other projects. Her work has been included in the Garden Design Up Close book by Emma Reuss featuring the Al Barari Contemporary Garden. She is regularly cited as an expert in the GCC garden landscape industry, having been featured in Inside Out, the Garden and Landscape Designers Association magazine Compass and Landscape Middle East.

About Al Barari

First envisioned by Emirati businessman Mr. Zaal Mohammed Zaal in 2005, Al Barari is the flagship development of the Zaal family. Literally meaning ‘wilderness’, Al Barari was designed to be a true desert oasis. Eighty per cent of the development’s 14.2 million square feet is made up of green, lush space that envelopes 189 Al Barari residences and 28 bespoke luxury villas of The Reserve. The estate features its own health and fitness centre, Body Language, signature restaurant, The Farm and spa, Heart & Soul. A total of six themed gardens with over 16.4 kilometres of naturally landscaped lakes, freshwater streams, cascades and waterways make Al Barari the lowest density development in the UAE and more akin to a botanical garden than a residential community. Garden maintenance and landscaping services are provided onsite by Al Barari’s partner Green Works.

The Middle East Smart Landscape Summit proudly announces Zeoplant’s participation as Silver Sponsor at the 2015 edition

of the event, to be held on April 28-29, 2015, at Sofitel The Palm Resort and Spa, Dubai, UAE. Held under the patronage of the Dubai Municipality and produced by global conference organizers Expotrade, the two-day summit will focus on the major initiatives undertaken towards urban landscape development, viewed against the context of the Dubai Municipality’s aim of converting Dubai into a green paradise in time for the World Expo 2020. Zeoplant’s position as the world’s leading natural moisture retaining soil additive makes it ideally suited to be associated with the event, with its focus on sustainable landscaping including innovative irrigation techniques.

The Dubai Municipality’s ‘Dubai 2020’ vision that projects a total of 12,200 hectares of green space through landscaping and horticulture projects has spawned a number of major greening initiatives, leading to significant growth opportunities for the landscape sector

in the Middle East. A robust irrigation network will form the bedrock on which the success of such initiatives rest. Evidence of this abounds across the UAE, with the surge in building of new parks and landscaped zones. Urban green spaces are well and truly on the rise in Dubai. And what is important is that all of it is sustainable. Sustainability, in terms of landscape architecture and environmental design are some of the core issues to be discussed at the Smart Landscape Summit, later this year.

Existing public areas can often face critical irrigation water shortages during the peak summer months, while newer developments can experience difficulties getting connected to the TSE or potable water network. Reducing irrigation water requirements by half using a proven and reliable additive can save not just on infrastructure investment, but also reduce operational and maintenance cost. The importance of such a solution is stressed on by Ralf Stahl, Managing Partner, Zeoplant LLC, who will be speaking at the event on ‘Sustainable solution for the increased irrigation water shortage in

our booming environment’. He feels the summit is ideal, saying, “Zeoplant once again partnered with Smart Landscape Summit because we see the event as the outstanding platform for the landscaping industry in the region to address and meet the experts and decision makers from the public and private sector.”

Brad Hariharan, Regional Director, Expotrade Middle East, organizers of the conference, welcomed the partnership, saying “The Middle East Smart Landscape Summit, with its theme of sustainable urban landscape development in general and topics revolving round innovative irrigation in particular, is the perfect platform for Zeoplant to showcase their offerings to the right audience. Zeoplant’s return as Silver Sponsor is indicative of the confidence and trust they have reposed in us. I look forward to an even more meaningful association with Zeoplant.”

For more details on the summit, visit www.landscapesummit.com

About Zeoplant

Zeoplant is the world’s leading natural moisture retaining soil additive, which guarantees a minimum irrigation water reduction of 50%. Zeoplant is added in a 3% ratio to the soil and is able to hold and retain irrigation water to be available for the plant roots.

Due to its purely mineral origin, Zeoplant is a one-time application.

Zeoplant established a convincing international track record where it had been applied to landmark projects since its inception in 2003. Due to the increasing demand for natural moisture retaining soil additives, Zeoplant has been successfully introduced in Australia, USA, South Africa and Europe.

The Zeoplant team is in regular communication with landscape architects, irrigation designers and the executing contractors to ensure an effective quality control from design to execution and operation to achieve the highest grade of sustainability and feasibility for the client.

Sharjah Holding, a strategic partnership between Majid Al Futtaim and the Government of Sharjah, today shared details on Al Zahia, Sharjah’s first-ever gated mixed use community

– signalling not only another first in many milestones, but also a new era for residential community living in Sharjah.

Al Zahia – owned by Sharjah Holding and managed by Majid Al Futtaim Properties – embodies Sharjah’s traditional values in a progressive and contemporary setting while offering homeowners a safe and secure community. By bringing together international ideals of living with Sharjah’s deep-rooted family and cultural values, Al Zahia is truly a comprehensively designed integrated community offering a well-rounded lifestyle.

Al Zahia compromises a blend of modern and traditional designs with a range of 3, 4 and 5-bedroom townhouses and villas, in addition to studios, and 1 and 2 -bedroom apartments. The community also provides boutique villas catering to the commercial needs of the Sharjah business sector.

Forty nine homeowners have already taken possession of their new properties with the upcoming new release of homes which is underway, marking construction of another 197 units to be completed by Q2 2016.

The Al Zahia community is ideally situated between Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed

and University City roads, close to Sharjah University City and Sharjah International Airport, with major road links to Dubai and the Northern Emirates. It will ultimately be home to over 12,000 residents and span a total area of around 1,300,000sqm.

Waleed Al Hashimi, CEO of Sharjah Holding, said: “By transforming the mixed use real

estate sector in Sharjah, Al Zahia gives momentum to the Government’s vison and drive to diversify Sharjah’s real estate sector –improving the emirate’s positioning as a preferred investment destination, as well as an ideal place for community living.”

Al Zahia marks the only gated community to date in the emirate to meet the continuously rising demand, both locally and regionally, for integrated lifestyles that combine modernity, privacy, convenience and safe living.

Bader Hareb, Chief Property Officer at Majid Al Futtaim Properties – Communities, said: today’s modern families do not simply want to live in a home but “they want to live in diverse, amenity-rich neighbourhoods that can accommodate their modern lifestyle; where they can live, work, play and even learn in the same place.

“The significant trend in consumer demand for

living communities clearly indicates a bright future for mixed use integrated communities that are designed to attract families looking for an affinity lifestyle accompanied with modern luxury, peace of mind, and a guaranteed convenient way of living”.

According to Hareb, people in gated communities typically take better care of

residential

their home. “This transforms into an added value for the property over the longer term, tying in perfectly with Majid Al Futtaim Properties’ focus on creating sustainable living environments designed for life-long value,” he said.

Al Zahia phase three comprises 101 Villas with up to 5-bedrooms and 132 Townhouses with up to 3 and 4-bedrooms. The villas offer a choice of a traditional or modern style, with a variety of layouts sizes, and high-quality finishes providing the space and luxury of back gardens and generous plot sizes, whereas the

townhouses are designed for families who are keen on enjoying an integrated community offering and lifestyle.

Al Zahia, which echoes Majid Al Futtaim’s vision, namely ‘creating great moments for everyone, everyday’, will generate a 10-year large-scale employment benefit during the construction phase. Subsequently, it is not only supplying significant jobs for the people living in the emirate, but the development is also stimulating the local economy. As such, Al Zahia’s estimated contribution to the Sharjah economy is

anticipated to reach around AED 5Billion.

Specialising in community-oriented developments, Sharjah Holding can lay claim to being first in transforming the emirate’s mixed use real estate sector having accomplished great success with the introduction of Matajer outlets, being the community’s first award winning neighbourhood malls in Sharjah.

Other community “living environments” by Majid Al Futtaim include The Wave in Muscat Oman, and Waterfront City in Beirut, Lebanon.

“We’re very proud of it and we feel it has made a significant contribution to shaping the contemporary, cultural landscape of the region,” says Nick Betney, Founder and MD of ARTZU Projects when looking back at one of their ground-breaking

projects in the GCC region.

It sits 5m tall, glistening in the sunlight, catching the car headlights at night, with the glow of the Dubai Mall as its backdrop. What Nick is referring to is ‘The Concha’ sculpture

at the entrance to The Address in Downtown Dubai, one of the region’s most iconic towers in one of the most exciting, emerging urban landscapes anywhere in the world. This is where retail, residential, tourism and leisure – and culture – all stunningly come together as integral elements of the wider master plan.

Artwork transforms the urban environment creating a cultural identity by defining public spaces and giving a sense of community. It contributes to a sense of desirability and liveability in the fast growing cities across the GCC. Fundamentally this is achieved

by connecting people with the built environment. ARTZU Projects has nearly 20 years of experience working to achieve these goals with cutting-edge companies such as Benoy, Emaar and Atkins in the UK, EU and Middle East.

If you consider land-mark artworks like Cloud Gate (‘The Bean’ - in Millennium Park, Chicago), Statue of Liberty (NYC), Angel of the North (NE of England), The Kelpies (Scotland), then the wider impacts of iconic pieces of sculpture become clear. What all these examples have in common is their ability to bring people together, create social well-being, identity and cohesion: a sense of community, while raising the profile of the city as a destination for locals and tourists alike.

This has been the aim of the Jeddah

would become the first thing you see when driving up to the entrance and the last thing you see as you leave. You can see Berlino in the back middle of the photograph with the Dubai Mall under construction as the backdrop.

“We selected Berlino – an artist and sculptor from Manchester - because he’s someone we’ve worked with for quite some time and we knew that his understanding of the brief would produce the right outcome for all concerned,”explains Charles Blair, Head of International at ARTZU Projects.

From the plaster model a scaled version in aluminium is created - the maquette (sic) - was produced and presented to be signed-off by Emaar (Figure 3). The maquette is vitally important, because this becomes the basis for scaling-up to the full-size actual piece. It’s really a miniature version of the end result.

The maquette was then taken back to the UK to a specialised foundry where it was scaled up to full-size. This is highly specialised work by a technical team who are experts in producing high-quality sculpture. It requires a lot of hand-finishing, as you can see in Figure 4, with the maquette just visible to the right.

sculptures in the public realm. It tangibly puts a place firmly on the map and differentiates your city, your development, from many others. The visitor numbers alone and the global publicity (mostly free) generated by these features, which have become tourist attractions in their own right, tells its own story. Has ample provision been made to include equally significant pieces of artwork and is there a coherent strategy of how and why to choose and site specific pieces across the GCC? These are all considerations that are fundamental to our role as art consultants alongside the practical considerations and technical support. Perhaps the best way of demonstrating our role in any given project is to take a look through the various, key developmental stages of The Concha project.

Commissioned in 2008 by Atkins for Emaar Properties, the British artist Berlino’s organic, flowing masterwork was one of the first major contemporary sculptures to be commissioned in Dubai and established ARTZU Projects as the leading art consultancy in the Gulf region.

Figure 1, shows the initial concept model, made from plaster, 50cm high, and developed from the brief provided by the client. This design solution was then approved by the client and taken to the next stage.

The plaster model was taken on-site, with all the design team, to orientate the piece to best effect in order to ensure the sculpture was angled at its most impressive perspective (Figure 2). This is vitally important as it

Once the full-scale clay model is completed a representative from Emaar flew to the

UK for final approval (Figure 5). The model was then divided into 120 separate sections, each was individually cast in aluminium. This is another technically demanding process. You get a clearer sense of scale by comparing the maquette on the left with its big sister to the right. Each of the 120 individually cast aluminium pieces

are welded together like a giant 3D jigsaw. (Figure 6).

Before a sculpture can be installed the preparation work must be completed. The groundwork was carried out on an elliptical base, which was also to become a water feature, all beneath the emerging canopy above the entrance (Figure 7) to The Address.

In the UK foundry, once it was all pieced together, it was cut into four sections and

Wadi Hanifah has always been of great importance to the Riyadh Region. It is also deeply connected to the history of Saudi

Arabia as both the modern capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, and the capital of the first Saudi state, Dirriyah, are located at Wadi Hanifah. The name is derived from the Banu Hanifah, a Bedouin tribe that had settled in this area. In historic times Wadi Hanifah, with its fertile soils provided food and its geomorphology was ideal for settlements which were easy to defend. In more recent times Wadi Hanifah has become probably the longest recreational park in the Middle East - a highly successful landscaping project that provides easily accessible, and much needed, outdoor space for millions of people.

However it has not always been this way. In this article I would like to share my personal story of Wadi Hanifah, which starts in 1993. The Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) gave my friend and now business partner Jens Boedeker and me the chance to go on a fact-finding mission in order to explore the Wadi. We had a ton of

Egret in Wadi

The lake district

wildlifeequipment including a canoe, paddles and dry suits shipped to Riyadh. We did not know what to expect, as all available data was sourced from outside the watercourse. No one had undertaken the journey downstream by boat yet.

A boat in the middle of the desert, to understand this one must know that there is a dry part and a water bearing part in Wadi Hanifah. One source of the stream, is water from leaking pipes, the other is treated sewage water from the Manfuha treatment plant. This created a constant flow also known as Riyadh River. To my knowledge the stream started in the ‘70s and was connected to the rapid growth of Riyadh - the flow rate has increased since up to 400,000-600,000 cubic meters a day.

Going back to the exploration - we started in Riyadh and followed the watercourse 60 km downstream to where the water seeps into the desert sand and the stream stops abruptly. What we found was not only astonishing but also an unbelievably

beautiful sight. There was an abundance of birdlife - herons, egrets, coots, black winged stilts, eagles, ibises and the rare Arabian duck just to name a few of the 200 plus species recorded. I remember one early morning as if it had been yesterday; we were gliding silently down the stream past a tree that was literally covered in egrets. You could not see a branch, as there must have been at least 100 of these birds resting in this single tree.

The stream was flowing through vast beds of reed - sometimes only a few meters wide

- then it opened up into long lakes with rocky islands in the middle. There were open shallow water areas with hundreds of black winged stilts and most surprisingly the water was crystal clear teaming with fish - mostly catfish and Tilapia. Even after the Manfuha sewage channel had joint the watercourse it took the reed beds only 1 kilometre to turn cloudy odorous water into clear water - you could see the river bed in two metre depth.

The population of Riyadh had not taken much notice of this area apart from farming activity and pumping water for irrigation. In parts of the Wadi, soil was bulldozed into the watercourse to increase arable land in other areas as the current had collected and deposited vast amounts of garbage. In our conversations with the local people we found out that most of them were not interested in the Wadi and no one really wanted to go near it.

In 2003, ten years after our first exploration,

ADA assigned us for the second exploration. The changes were evident. A once diverse biotope had been overgrown with reed, the shallow water areas had gone and the bird life had dramatically decreased not only in numbers but also in species. Most of the biodiversity was lost.

Interestingly the populations’ perception of Wadi Hanifah had completely changed. The Arriyadh Development Authority was the driving force behind a process, which created in the following years the

most accepted and used recreation area in the vicinity of Riyadh. The figures below demonstrate the sheer effort it took to turn Wadi Hanifah into what it is now (before the construction of the lake area started).Quantity of trash and rubble removed: 500,000 cubic metres Area of cleaned Wadi bed: 10 million square metresMaterial used to repair flow channel: 2.5 million cubic metresParks created: 9Lakes created: 5, total surface area 25 hectaresShade trees planted: 30,000Shrubs planted: 50,000Pedestrian promenades: 7.4 kilometresRecreational trails: 47 kilometres

The Government has invested over US$100 million into this environmental rehabilitation project.

When the development of Wadi Hanifah started around 2002, tons of garbage were removed from the Wadi and Moriyama & Teshima, in cooperation with Buro Happold, were awarded with the design of the water channel and the adjacent areas. Later, in 2007, Bödeker and Partners and I, personally were involved in the so-called Wadi Hanifah Landscape Feature Program - the goal was to upgrade 12 areas for enhanced recreational use.

The whole project was so successful that in 2009 Bödeker & Partners were given the opportunity together with our engineering partner Buro Happold to develop and

design the last piece in the Wadi Hanifah puzzle – the lake area 45 kilometres to the south east of Riyadh.

Apart from the recreational use for this area - the goal was to bring back the biodiversity found in 1993 and to create an area where wildlife and visitors can co-exist. The execution of the lake area started in 2013 and its first phase will be completed this year.

The overall area of this project will cover 36 million sqm of which in its initial phase a 131,350 sqm lake that we found during our first exploration was brought back to life. This lake had decreased in size due to extensive reed growth and the deposition of sludge. In 2014 the sludge and the invasive reed beds were removed.

The key features of the design are a visitor centre, picnic sites, trail networks, a waterfront promenade and two inaccessible islands in the middle of the lake of combined 47,000 sqm for wildlife with

habitat is reinstated. Along the way I have seen this project grow and flourish.

Personally I feel privileged to have not only been able to witness the changes made over the years but also was given the chance to make my contribution to this project. It clearly was the joint effort of many who made the story of Wadi Hanifah so successful.

Foremost, however, credit must be given to the Arriyadh Development Authority who had the courage and vision to invest in a space that was once disregarded and neglected and through their endeavours, they have turned it into a highly successful project millions of people as well as wildlife and nature benefit from.

reinstated shallow water areas which will create a habitat for wading birds.

A bioremediation treatment plant was completed in 2009 and the Al Hair STP Water Treatment plant, which started operation in the middle of 2014, vastly improved the quality of the water. With the first phase of the lake area almost completed, my story of 22 years has gone full circle. In 1993 I started my journey along Wadi Hanifah now in 2015 I arrived again at the lake area to the southeast of Riyadh were a diverse

The Osservanti’s garden which is located inside the historic centre of Lucca is surrounded by ancient buildings and the St.

Francesco religious structure from the 15th century. Surprisingly, the public garden is actually a roof garden built on a car park. The project had to utilise the empty and almost abandoned area, which was used only for public parking. By renovating the space, we have been able to give citizens a new green area.

The design is inspired by traditional kitchen gardens and the historic gardens of Lucca. Many of these gardens can still be seen when walking through the streets of Lucca. Enclosed garden elements and shapes have also been a source of inspiration for the final design. The modern interpretation of some of these elements; the rows of vines, land for agriculture, water as a source of life and vessels, have been essential in the designing process.

The chosen materials - bricks, stone and iron are typical to local tradition. So we decided to use them along with some new and contemporary materials, such as transparent asphalt and ‘Cor-ten’ steel. The elevators that

The Embaba area had a long history of rural landscape with vast agricultural fields before it was transformed into one of the most densely populated districts in Egypt. This history greatly influenced the

design of the park from the very beginning.

Agrarian theme is the dominant idea governing the design by evoking the authentic Egyptian countryside character.

The concept holistically references the entire rural sector of Egypt from western desert oases settlement to the Nile valley and Delta villages; with it’s natural and build environment.

The spatial structure is of a major significance and is directly influenced by Egypt’s morphological regions. The Nile’s centrality to Egyptian landscape is represented by a stream that originates at the visitors’ main entrance at the southern side of the park and winds northward through the entire site, connecting all the park activities before reaching a spectacular lake,

bounded by the main building mass. The area resembles a traditional village and offers a restaurant, cafes, and a multi-purpose hall.

The Nile valley fields are visualised with their linear elongated patterns perpendicular to the water stream through segmentation of the extended green hub. “An oasis was created,

to resemble the western desert oasis, in a nicely secluded and serene part at the western side of the park that also featured a small water spring placed within a densely planted palm grove”. An 18-metre high observation tower after Shali’s mosque minaret has been adopted and incorporated within the village mass. Fishing villages along northern coast have been also reinstated with a small dock for leisure boats, a ship-like cafe, and a lighthouse overlooking terrace.

Several of traditional village features, such as pigeons› towers, «Sakkia» (water wheel), and Bustan (orchard), have all been utilised to complement the intended design character. Many native plants that characterise the Egyptian countryside were planted. Ficus Sycomorus (Algemeez) trees were planted along the water stream, while Phoenix Dactylifera palms (Date palm) embodied the Bustan image. Many other native plants were planted throughout the park, such as Acacia trees, Albizia Lebbek and Dalbergia Sessoo trees.

In order to further strengthen the design intent, a wide range of “countryside” daily life elements have been brought back into life. Traditional benches made of wood logs are engraved with folkloric motifs and are distributed throughout the park. Vernacular irrigation techniques, which city residences may have never seen, are deliberately used both for their aesthetical significance, and as edutainment elements. The famous Fayoum’s Sakkia’s (water wheels) are prominent features in the project bringing water from the water stream up to the Bustan plateau. There are also small water runnels cross the Bustan as reminiscent of the traditional irrigation channels.

The design concept also keenly seeks reviving the rural cultural heritage. For instance; the «Aragouse» (traditional puppet show) - which is an intrinsic facet of the Egyptian village life rendering the joyful spirit of the children- called for establishing a well-designed puppet amphitheatre. Nearby, there is also a designated piazza surrounded by shaded «Mastaba»s (seating) for spectators of the anticipated traditional dancing performance.

The park programme covers a wide range of diverse activities to fulfil different requirements and to ensure liveliness throughout the day. The park includes a 400-seat amphitheatre with backstage changing rooms, a two-storey vaulted roof restaurant, various cafes

and cafeterias, a substantial children›s play area, many shaded sitting areas, a sunken garden, a puppet amphitheatre, 174 car parking , six bus parking spaces, in addition to an administrative building and park facilities such as toilets, first aid and garbage collection areas.

To integrate the park context, four gates were assigned to ease accessibility. In order to ensure the economic sustainability, many revenue-generating activities - restaurants, cafe›s, a food court, and performance venues - were incorporated within the scheme. In such a congested residential area, the Giza Park with 38 acres is an in demand community amenity that will not only serve as the Embaba area but a larger geographic area within Cairo metropolitan area.

For the design, a green pattern is laid out like a big carpet over all edges and faces of the roof. An extensive roof greening acts as the ground

layer while intensive roof greening areas add coloured marks to the pattern. Each of the roofs are covered with extensive vegetation and are connected to the surrounding topography at several points which attempt to use the volume as an extension of the existing topography.

The topography of the site drops from the north-west to the south-east corner. The main axis follows the same direction, visitor’s way passes along the roof, and their view is led over the roof scape and the hilly landscape in the background. So the roof seems to be a starting point of landscape and at the same time it becomes a part of the daily routine of the inhabitants of the quarter. The roof provides an imposing panorama of the area. With this design and using the ecological effects of intensive green roof technology new grounds were broken in Turkey.

We collaborate with specialised structure and fluids engineering, with economists, biologists, lighting specialists and also with local architects. The team is formed considering the particularities of the project: with multiple inputs, intensive discussions, meaningful and relevant results. We also have an equipped studio at our disposal that allows us to carry out projects and develop new cultural and educational projects.

tell us about some exciting new projects in the region.Muraba is our first project in the UAE and it’s a project that is very close to our hearts as the design ethos of the Muraba and RCR are in sync. We are passionate about Muraba Residences Palm Jumeirah

because it’s a building that is a unitary set. You can recognise each unit and its uniqueness and yet every unit is part one of a larger project. Unitary and uniqueness generate a very unique relation in the Muraba building. In addition to this, the interior-exterior relation is an aspect that created a sophisticated experience and represents a new philosophy of living.

What are the main challenges of adapting your style to suit the current GCC market? We have a way of working that doesn’t represent challenges when we are working in other regions or countries. Our architecture is inspired by its immediate environment and as such our concepts are not limited by time or locations.

What is your educational background and your experience in the GCC area? The three of us, (Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta) finished our studies in Architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura del Vallès in 1987 and since 1988 we worked together in our own studio, RCR Arquitectes, in Olot –the city were we were born near Barcelona.

Since 1989 we have been consultant architects to the Natural Park of National Interest in the olcanic Zone of La Garrotxa, and during our careers we have also tutored in urbanism and landscape architecture from 1989 to 2001.

We are the founding partners and a team; which works together and shares creativity as our motto. We use a variety of tools to develop a project, knowing that each of us brings diverse and complementary information: handmade sketches, conceptual schemes, CAD drawings, models and perspectives.

Page 44: Landscape Magazine April 2015

42 i www.landscape-me.com i april 2015

This gives us the flexibility of keeping our design style but designing in such a way that it represents the location of projects.

The location and its environment were the main inspirations for Muraba as we recognised the need for spaces to be fluid in relation to the exterior. The idea is to be able to experience the exterior from the interior. We see architecture from a point of view where you need to understand each process according to its location, and allow the building to be born according to its surroundings.

What is the difference between the landscape industry (the architecture/designs from the outside) here in the Middle East compared to the other countries, like Spain? There are many differences in the industry according to each country but we think this has to do more with normative and

regulatory differences rather than the creative process. Creative processes vary according to each artist or architect. For Muraba everything we envisioned has been materialised and is being developed by companies in the Middle East.

In the UAE architecture is more about the exterior and this is where we come in with a different suggestion. For all our projects, including Muraba, we enjoy playing with interiors, where people live. Our starting

point is a balance between the interior-exterior relation and Muraba has this characteristic.

What is the most frustrating aspect of your work? The most difficult aspect is overcoming all the normative obstacles during the process. These regulatory norms generally entail long processes. However, the satisfaction you get when the space you imagined materialises is extraordinary.

Who are your major clients and what major projects have you been involved with on their behalf? Our client repertoire is very varied – we have participated in many public space projects and well as private projects in Europe. I wouldn’t point out one client in particular but rather the variety of clients who are interested in creating spaces that are designed to be enjoyed by users, such as Muraba.

Where do you see the GCC in 10 years from now with respect to developments and landscaping? The GCC is in a process of expansion and consolidation so it is difficult to tell where the region in going in terms of developments.

Can you evaluate Muraba›s position in the market? At Muraba, we see things differently and we believe there is a place in Dubai for property designed with the end-user in mind; creating a contemporary living space with a sense of understated elegance that becomes identifiable as an address of distinction.

RCR understands structures as experience; we feel these structures should reflect the essential values of life and that they should have a relation to their environment. Architecture should consider nature, the sea, wind, light and all the elements that form the equilibrium of that environment – this is balance is what every RCR project reflects. For Muraba, we have a plot that is very special, with a view of the Dubai skyline and the ocean. From the outside the Muraba will feature a visible crystal material. Observing how these materials play with lights and the lightness of its environments is unique.

Janet Rosenberg & Studio Inc. (JRS) was selected in 2008 to utilise the framework established in the Market Place Strategic Urban Design Plan to design and implement a new Civic

Square for the City of Guelph, Ontario.

Guelph, located northwest of Toronto, has been experiencing a rapid growth in population and an increasing trend towards urban living. The city had adopted a new mentality towards its changing nature, and the studio’s challenge was to present and facilitate that change to the public through the design of a quality public square and streetscape capable of enriching the civic experience of the downtown area.

The two primary activities of the square are the water feature in the warmer months and the ice rink in the colder months. After producing several conceptual options, a final design was chosen. It features a large (8,500 square feet) shallow oval water feature that reflects the historic winter fair wall of city hall and seven custom perforated

Page 48: Landscape Magazine April 2015

46 i www.landscape-me.com i april 2015

steel shrouds house water jets which can be programmed to coordinate with a theatre quality LED lighting and sound system. The shrouds were commissioned by Canadian artist Jean-Pierre Morin and required extensive coordination with mechanical and structural engineers as well as lighting and water feature consultants. The water surface can be drained easily to accommodate a large civic event while a subsurface reservoir holds and recycles the water for the next day.

During the winter months, the water feature transforms into an energetic ice rink for skating and a focal point for winter festivities, from day to night. Critical to the success of both activities was the provision of a support building. The 1,500 square foot curved glass pavilion, designed by RDH Architects, provides shelter for cold skaters and spectators, a place to change skates and swimsuits, accessible public restrooms, and a secure location for the ice resurfacing machine and equipment. One of the curved glass walls hosts a frit of donor names that made the project possible.

The city of Guelph has implemented an ambitious schedule of community events that keep the square animated and vibrant. With its flexible and unique combination of programmable water jets, sound and lighting, the city has been able to host a series of innovative and interactive events and performances such as the summer ‘Disco Splash’ and dance performances. Other events include movie nights, a Canada day party, family day festivities, a jazz festival and weekly farmers markets.

Connecting Market Square to the adjacent buildings and shops was achieved through a unified and continuous paving strategy that stretches clay brick pavers across the street and sidewalks. The use of continuous paving with small unit sizes created a distinctly different feel for drivers resulting in slower speeds. It also allows for a cohesive space for occasions when the road is closed to host street parties and events. The Studio worked through a comprehensive review process to ensure that the Wellington County Accessibility Guidelines were met.

Throughout the barrier free space tactile pavers and colour contrasting elements are used to indicate surface change and aid in way-finding. A historic and interpretive signage strategy was implemented to celebrate the unique and interesting history of the space. This project also involved substantial infrastructure renewal including work to the water mains, sewers and other services.

The square also spread to encompass the area in front of the neighbouring provincial courthouse, making it feel part of a cohesive and connected downtown civic realm. A strong visual connection exists between the square and the neighbouring inter-modal transit terminal. Not only does the new transit hub introduce more people into Guelph to work and shop, it connects the small surrounding communities with a real downtown that is easily accessible from the central terminal.

Within the Square a series of planted berms with curved stone benches provides flexible seating. The planted berms also provide protection from cold winds in the winter. During warmer months loose chairs and tables are scattered through the square for flexible use. With no existing trees on the site, an important feature of the square was the canopy introduced by the large caliper Kentucky Coffee Trees, selected for their distinctive bark and branching structure. These native trees, threatened in Ontario, bring a level of familiarity to the square by providing a link to the rural areas surrounding downtown Guelph. By converting traditional street parking spaces to angled spaces and shifting the existing road slightly, JRS were able to widen the side walk to a more comfortable width and introduce seating and a row of street trees.

Silva cell technology was used under the paving on the Carden Street sidewalk to prevent compaction and allow for root growth of the maple trees that line the street. Almost immediately, side walk patios began to appear along Carden Street, drawing on the appeal of this vibrant and dynamic public space.

Market Square has received several notable awards including an RAIC National Urban Design Award (2014), and Architectural Conservancy of Ontario Heritage Award (2014) and a Canadian Society of Architects Award of Excellence (2013). Market Square has become a vibrant hub of social activity and community life.
