Despite the controversy that has embroiled Qatar since winning the bid to host the 2022 world cup tournament, the gulf country is ploughing ahead with innovative plans to build dynamic new stadiums that will change the face of the country’s landscape.

The knock-on effect of the tournament and the lead up to it, which will bring some of the world’s leading architects and urban planners to the Gulf, will hopefully mean that critically landscaping issues are addressed such as irrigation and water shortages and planting in arid desert communities. In this issue, Dr Anna Grichting, from the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning in Qatar University pens a piece for us addressing the logical trends in Landscape and Urbanism, Smart Cities, Food Urbanism, Urban Biodiveristy, Border Ecologies and Public Art in a bid to answer the question; how can landscape help to create more liveable and sustainable environments in arid countries? The View – a one-of-a-kind holiday retreat tucked away in the rugged highlands of Al Dakhiliya Governorate – has reopened for business after an

extensive makeover that has accentuated its resort-like ambience. Following an eight-month-long refurbishment, The View has been transformed into a charming mountain retreat that, while retaining the appeal of an eco-luxe retreat, now boasts all of the amenities of a high-end holiday destination.

This was officially reopened under the auspices of H.E. Maitha bint Saif Al-Mahrouqi, Under Secretary, Ministry of Tourism Oman on the 15th of January 2015.

The delightful getaway, nestled on the summit of Hail al Shas in the Wilayat of Hamra, has long been popular with international tourists, as well as weekenders from Muscat as it is just two and a half hours drive. Its location, 1400 metres above sea level, not only affords its guests spectacular

views of the surrounding natural grandeur characterised by soaring mountain massifs and plunging canyons, but it also serves as a convenient base from which to explore some of Oman’s most exciting natural and historical attractions across nearby Al Hamra, Bahla, Nizwa and Jabrin. The average temperature between 15 – 20 degrees is an added attraction for tourists.

The 15 tented structures that served as lodgings in the past have been replaced by stylish pods – 30 in all – each tastefully appointed and fitted out to provide guests with a high degree of

comfort and convenience. King-size bed, LCD TV and stand alone bathtub are part of an array of modern amenities that await customers at this comprehensively upgraded property.

Furthermore, the pods have been designed and thoughtfully laid out to ensure magnificent canyon-facing views to all 30 lodgings, in contrast to only seven of the 15 tented lodges before the overhaul. This has been possible due to a significant expansion of area that now covers 12,000 square metres. What adds to the beauty and the amazing view are the rocky settings that have been left untouched and go

a long way to enhance The View’s appeal as a mountain retreat.

“Thanks to the extensive revamp, The View is more than just an accommodation with dramatic panoramas of Al Hamra’s rugged grandeur. It’s an oasis that offers reposeful tranquillity on one hand, and a comfortable base on the other – for the visitor to explore some of northern Oman’s finest natural and historical monuments. Indeed, The View is like no other holiday haven that Oman has to offer,” remarked Abdulmunim Al Zawawi, Chairman of The Zahara Group.

As a self-contained sanctuary set in the lap of nature, The View also offers its guests the opportunity of a restful holiday far removed from the hurly-burly of urban life. Customers can relax by the temperature-

controlled infinity-edge swimming pool with that offers a breathtaking view, or enjoy glorious sunsets by the Sunset Lounge. Charming walkways also connect the pods to the property’s popular multi-cuisine restaurant that can cater to more than 40 guests at a time. As the terrace is close to the canyon, the bird’s eye view of the surrounding area is incredible at all times; more so during sun rise and sun set.

For corporates, a fully equipped multipurpose conference hall allows for business executives to combine a relaxing holiday with opportunities for some serious brainstorming as well. For the more energetic at heart, there are options for mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing and so on.

The London based studio was approached by one of the oldest families in the country, after winning the design for the phase 2 of Dubai Sustainable City.

They were tasked to design a 6 bedroom villa, which included accommodation and facilities for guests and staff.

Living with nature in Abu-Dhabi

Baharash Architecture have been selected to design a new “Panoramic” villa typology in one of the most exclusive addresses in the United Arab Emirates.

11 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2015

Living with nature in Abu-Dhabi

Baharash Bagherian, Design Director of Baharash Architecture, described the project as a unique opportunity for demonstrating BA’s ability to develop creative solutions at a smaller scale. “One of the key challenges of the project was to provide panoramic views from every bedroom and key living areas, whilst also providing variation of outdoor spaces within the plot. The constraints and opportunities of the site created a very unique design that will enhance the experience of residents and guests with nature”.

The Villa is located in the heart of Saadiyat Beach Golf Views, which is the only oceanfront championship golf course in the region.

The golf course provides a natural habitat for a variation of wildlife, and the villa aims to bring the residents closer to it by blurring the boundaries between the two landscapes.

Baharash Bagherian describes how sustainability was also a key driver for the planning of the villa. “The planning and configuration of the villa was designed to maximise shading, whilst elevated gardens provided passive cooling to accommodations below. Our landscape approach was to use native plants and trees which create a natural desert-like ambience and require less water than lawns.”

The project is scheduled for construction in May 2015.

Hanging Gardens of Doha. Integrating Green Infrastructures for increased Food Security, Human Health and Urban Biodiversity. Towards Regenerative Cities in the GulfQatar and the rapidly expanding and urbanising countries of the Gulf face many challenges, which include Food Security, Loss of Biodiversity and Increasing Health issues. How can landscape help to create more liveable and sustainable environments in arid countries? Tackling these challenges requires new approaches to design which include developing a deeper understanding of ecological and physical systems in relation to human activity and improving landscape-urban designs for increased resource efficiency. courses and research in Sustainable Urban and Landscape Design are studying the potential of new design strategies and typologies that include the integration of food production within the citiy. This can contribute to the promotion of healthy living through the consumption of organic foods, herbs and natural medecines and more active lifestyles through gardening. By using permaculture approaches to planting , these productive landscapes can also benefit biodiversity and foster cultural integration through gardening communities. Permaculture is a branch of ecological design, ecological engineering, environmental design, construction and integrated water resources management that develops sustainable architecture, regenerative and self-maintained habitat and agricultural systems modeled from natural ecosystems.

One approach is to consider landscape systems and their symbiosis with architecture, to create beneficial relationships that minimise the use of scarce resources. The concept of the “regenerative city” as proposed by Herbert Girardet is one

that has circular metabolism – as opposed to the traditional linear one - which imitates nature’s circular metabolism, where the waste generated by one organism serves as a useful resource for others. In a predominantly urban world, cities will need to adopt circular metabolic systems to assure their own viability as well as that of the rural environments and ecosystems on whose viability they ultimately depend.

Cities are not made from individual buildings, they are also constructed from the infrastructure and organization of place as well as the communities that inhabit them. The sustainable city calls on us to

14 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2015

urbanismunderstand how these city systems work in relationship to the natural environment and relationships to the anticipated community. The emerging field of Landscape Urbanism looks at this new symbiosis and merging of fields to design more integrated ecological systems. As Charles Waldheim suggests, Landscape urbanism begins with the environment, looking to work with the ecological systems of a particular site.

Designing Productive Landscapes at Qatar UniversityIt is necessary to find new approaches to urban planning and architectural and landscape design in Qatar which integrate food systems and spaces, increasing food security, minimizing resource consumption while maximizing resource efficiency. Qatar University’s Master’s Program in Urban Planning and Design has been looking at the concept of Food Urbanism as an example of Sustainable Systems Design for cities. There are many different project scenarios at very different scales where we can start to bring food production into the city. Compounds can be retrofitted to allow the inhabitants to compost their organic waste, recycle water and grow seasonal vegetables and plant fruit trees. Educational Institutions can build greenhouses to produce food for their canteens and to involve the students in the production. Vertical farming is one way of growing food without soil, using aquaponics, which utilizes very little water and recycles the water. Towers and rooftops can be transformed with productive facades and terraces. The Master’s students at Qatar University elaborated scenarios for different scales and typologies for Productive Landscapes in Qatar, including: Qatar University Edible Campus; Green Retrofitting of West Bay High Rise

District; Vertical Farming Towers in Lusail; Al Zuhoor Compound Edible Gardens; The Pearl Community Gardens and Edible Boulevards; Abu Nahkla Reservoir Wildlife, Biodiversity and Organic Food Production; and Offshore Reefs Food Production for a Post Carbon Society.

Vertical GreeningIntegrating Plants into Architecture and Urbanism is not new, but it is gaining a new lease of life as a contribution to urban ecology and liveability as well as improving a buildings resource efficiency. Buildings and Urban Designs that integrate good and efficient green infrastructures can contribute to Carbon Capture and to reducing the Urban Heat Island effect. Other challenges facing Gulf countries, such as Food Insecurity and loss of Biodiversity can be mitigated by new forms of plantings that align with the principles of Permaculture.

Vertical or Skyrise Farming as well as Green facades and Hanging Rooftop gardens are ways to integrate vegetation into buildings and to maximise efficient use of resources and recycling of waste. The idea of vertical farm has existed since the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and comprises cultivating plant life within skyscrapers or on vertically inclined surfaces or rooftops. In addition to skyrise farming, green walls and green roofs are used as ways to control climate within buildings and capture carbon as well as to mitigate heat island effect.

The vertical gardening concept was applied by students to retrofit West Bay high rise districts and commercial zones, including shopping malls, with green facades and rooftop farming, and edible boulevards and public spaces. The proposed solutions included greening the towers façade, regeneration of unused/low occupancy towers, and creating more integrated and sustainable public realm landscape.

An Edible Campus and Hanging Gardens at Qatar UniversityOne example of a project that is being envisioned by students, researchers and faculty at Qatar University is to design an Edible Campus. The objective of this project is to maximize resource efficiency and to improve the ecosystem and environment. By providing an important source of fresh food for the

Dr. Anna Grichting and students Reem Awaad and Shorook Bassam planning the Juicing Event in the Edible Garden

16 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2015

campus, which includes residential areas as well as educational and research facilities, it is also possible to considerably reduce the Foodprint of the University, that is, the amount of energy that is used to bring the food to the plate on the campus.

This project includes both retrofitting and guidelines for new buildings. Students began to identify all the accessible and flat roofs on which Food Producing structures could be implemented. They also outlined the reserves of land that can be used for farming for the years that they are not needed for building. Vegetables, Fruits and Medicinal plants are proposed and these also contribute to designing a new landsape plan for the campus. The long view is to be able to reuse the grey water from the buildings to recycle the organice waste from the canteens and the landscape gardening.

A pilot project is currently being implemented in an edible boulevard and a rooftop garden at the College of Engineering at Qatar University as part of an undergraduate

student grant and a PhD research on permaculture. Working with the local gardeners, many of them Nepali and coming from farming communities, the aim is to grow food for the workers, and also to create a landscape that will foster biodiversity by attracting many species of birds, butterflies, insects etc. The plans for the Edible Boulevard were designed by undergraduate students as part of a grant funded by the Qatar National Research Fund. Their work included case studies of food growing in residential buildings – including a permaculture garden - as well as a diagram showing the edible plants and their growing seasons in Qatar. Part of the challenge is not only designing new spaces and structures to accommodate food, but also to communicate to the public that growing food is possible in desert climates.

Research being undertaken in collaboration with a doctoral researcher, Luzita Ball, will aim to gather empirical and scientific data about what grows well in Qatar and demonstrate the wide variety of food that can be grown, even with

the harsh growing conditions. It will also provide a tangible demonstration of how implementation of Permaculture practices helps to increase and benefit soil structure by use of compost, manure, straw, diversity of plants. and to increase biodiversity by natural pest management practices through beneficial insects. and a mix of vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, that create a symbiotic ecosystem, using the waste water from the residential building, recycling organic waste, as well as raising chickens.

This multi-pronged approach, at multiples scales of design and typologies, is necessary to implement effective, lasting and meaningful systems and infrastructures that are integrated and in line with the country’s vision

In Qatar - which to date imports 90 percent of the food stuff consumed in the country and has around 1,200 farms of which only 300 are productive - Vertical Farming, Food Urbanism and Permaculture are still emerging concepts. But as designers and planners, we have to look to the future and plan for 10 to 30 years ahead, if not more. The problem of food security, the shortage of water and the loss of biodiversity will certainly shift our ways of designing cities and producing food, and will drive the need for more collaboration between engineers, architects, urbanists, biologists, and many disciplines to work together to this end. Participative and collaborative planning are also necessary to achieve social, ecological and economic sustainability that is meaningful for all society.

Kai Tak City will become a living sensorium, a place full of fun and discovery, a place for special events. Rich and happy memories will be created on the waterfront, the Great Lawn, cafes, restaurants, community gardens and orchards. Monthly jazz concerts, interactive performances, productive landscapes, and locally grown food markets, aligned with celebrating cultural festivals including the mid-autumn lantern ceremonies, New Year gatherings and the winter solstice festival.

Morphis’s design concept proposes three step changes as part of a vision to create a world-class open space system – Celebrating the River, Living Roots, and The Peoples Playground. A series of interventions woven together within a poetic framework, celebrating the linear nature of the trail and park -

Celebrating the River . . . An urban landscape anchored by the waterfront as a unifying spine; Kai Tak River is a rare heritage linking the hinterland to the north of the development with the waterfront, and in doing so, unifying the wider urban fabric of existing communities and connecting the rural hinterland, as well as restoring and protecting the river.

The creation of a coherent, interconnected and continuous agile framework anchored by the waterfront as a unifying spine, Kai Tak City becomes an ensemble of dramatic places, coherently organized, and layered, becoming a series of destinations along a linear green route, celebrating the river

Living Roots . . . Banyan tree inspired and symbolic of the urban jungle, weaving a sinuous

network of connections across the river and beyond, growing coherently and continuously in time and space. A series of urban interventions, celebrating the local heritage and spirit, woven together within a poetic framework, connectivity and bio-diversity, all connected by nature. Trails will be enriched with a learning program, activated by scanning the tags with your smart phone – adding a digital, invisible layer that can be adapted to residents and visitors alike.

26 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2015

The People’s Playground . . . Nature’s gift to the community; the whole park will be conceived as a playground, allowing all to play freely and creatively, and get lost in their games and imagination. There will be places for children to increase their levels of activity and contact with the natural world as part of a healthy lifestyle. The park will encourage lasting connections and engender a very real sense of public ownership which will evolve organically with the passage of time. A destination framed by buildings where all lines of movement flow together, making the park a place to visit and re-visit again.

Mark explains, “Kai Tak City will be designed with nature, to create meaningful placemaking to promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles to celebrate nature in the fabric of the city through to the rural hinterland. Integrated sustainable building and landscape water cycles will be developed, further celebrating the water story throughout Kai Tak City.

29 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2015

Harbour Square is an imitate courtyard space in the heart of the Beirut downtown shopping district. Like a harbour

sheltering the boats from the waves, the new square provides respite from the fervent activity of its surroundings.

The remains of an ancient wall is integrated as sculpture, partly surrounded by water and shaded by a large stainless steel canopy, it provides focus ‒ and a source of memory and atmosphere. The wall is partly surrounded by water to give it a contemporary position resonating

30 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2015

with its original function. Visitors can come and learn more about the history of Beirut within the context of the wall.

Like the Bassin des Mahones, the new harbour is a gateway to transport links – it is a trading place and a place to meet and relax as the world passes by. Trees line and enclose the square in a wall of green to soften the space. Platforms surrounded by water offer cafés and rest areas under the shade of a pergola canopy. The canopy design is based on a three-dimensional re-interpretation of an Arabian pattern. Formed from vertical and inclined steel plates, the canopy provides decorative shadows over the square and creates an identity for the leisure spaces and cafés/restaurants under its cover.

beach villa

The location itself gave us the inspiration for the conceptualization of the landscape design. What we used immediately as a benefit

is the unique condition of site. The villa is surrounded by mangroves and natural greenery which is very appreciated and valuated in a desert country like Qatar. The set for the beach villa was ideal, however, soon after the initial research and visit to the site an obstacle appeared. What we found out is that this land contains low level of ground sea water. Nevertheless this tackled us and inspired to convert potential problem into a beneficial situation.

Beach Villa located in North of Qatar, Al Shamal

33 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2015

Therefore we decided that the core guideline for our landscaping would be enhancing endemic nature, in favor of design. The idea was to drill and create natural ponds that will use ground sea water which is influenced by the high tides. This possibility provided the main conceptual solution, while planting authentic vegetation provided better microclimatic condition.

In this holistic design approach, the effort was on preserving natural habitat and to try to improve scenery with implementing and repeating the natural green elements, such as mangroves .They play a very important role in the ecosystem and as such can significantly improve the environment. Their adaptation to saltwater allows them to flourish where no other trees can survive. They can grow quite well in fresh water, but their special ability to regulate salt allows them to out-compete most other trees in the tropical and subtropical tidal environment. Also, stabilizes the land by trapping and holding sediment. Wide buffers of mangroves can protect the shoreline from waves and reduce flooding damage from storm surges. So with accommodating mangroves inland, we were able to keep tranquility during sea levels fluctuations, helping to protect property from waves.

Circle shape of pounds has derived trough phase of research, it has been successfully incorporated in surroundings. In this way a few small ecosystems formed in pounds are connected by ground natural caves with the sea. Together they create the impression of an oasis in desert. New designed space highlights the vernacular architecture and character of this specific landscape.

Mangroves are also capable of enhancing growth and production of different species and therefore provide diversity. It is this diversity that ensures aesthetic experience, recreational experience and can excite artistic inspiration.

stadium

El-Jaish SPORTS CLUB

Qatar

35 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2015

Another project that outstands is El-Jaish Sport Club. When we approached the task of designing

it, aiming to achieve a visionary design that merges architecture and landscape, we were playing with shapes while blurring the boundaries of the built and the natural, creating a space that allows the visitor to interact with the landscape as much as with the main stadium activity.

The idea was to work with the existing site and to use local materials. The architects were playing with carefully selected, reused materials that create a more environmental. Shading roof is designed to be removed during periods when the stadium is not in use so the entire space can get a more natural look. To be seen when not in use as a pure landscape along with the park.

As a result, set in the desert landscape, El-Jaish Sport Club celebrates the

site in which it lays. Recognizing the meaning of site surrounding and carefully approaching the issue of sustainability and the interpretation of architecture, the stadium was “pushed” into the ground highlighting the landscape as one of its main features. Therefore, the principle behind developing this particular design would allow us to somehow make the building and volumes fade away, leaving a large green area for relaxation and conviviality. Because of

36 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2015

stadium

submerged disposition of the court the heavy structure for the highest stands is avoided leaving the complete support ground with a light and removable structure to cover the stadium. The Sport Club would emerge like a hidden treasure behind mounds and hills that are defining the area of the stadium

and its related activities. Creating a place that allows conglomeration of a large number of visitors in the heart of the landscape.

Mulini Beach is located in an attractive area of Rovinj, on the exit from the central part of the city and in the

continuation of the promenade, in front of hotels Monte Mulini, Lone and Eden, wrapped in a rich green public park and green forest protective areas.

It is an extension of the city’s public area and the promenade whose primary function is to connect the city of Rovinj and park Punta Corrente.

An extremely important factor in the design of the beach was the relationship to existing terrain. With regard to the specific environment that is completely different depending on the time of day (the sea level varies in approximately 80 cm) due to the influence of the tides the design was dependent on the sea as a variable element, the sea has significantly influenced the creative decisions during the design process.

That is why the entire area of the beach is divided into two zones – a stretch

40 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2015

from the marina to the beach pavilion that is greatly influenced by the waves, and a much calmer bay with a pebble beach. The first zone is designed as a natural topography, with lots of fractured surfaces for sunbathing and relatively sparse vegetation. The calmer Lone bay is formed as a pebble beach with lush vegetation that gently slopes into the sea.

Mulini Beach Bar, a beach facility with a large bar, locker rooms, showers, toilets and an information desk is located in the center of the zone. In the evening, the beach bar turns into a more intimate lounge with a cozy atmosphere by the sea. It is designed as a pavilion with a floating pergola roof – a steel structure that rests on 6 points, whose final shape was determined by an analysis of the sun movement through the summer months. The pergola, weighing 20 tons, has a span

bOOK desCriPtiON:this book was published on the occasion of the 80th birthday of Vittorio Gregotti, founder and principal of the world-renowned Gregotti associati. Gregotti reigned as editor of Casabella, italy’s leading interior design and architecture magazine, for fourteen years. this book is a survey of his career and highlights

his most important projects in architecture, urban design, and graphic design. However, the designs that take the spotlight are the ones Gregotti has conceived in China. in Pujiang (near shanghai), he created the master plan for a new town inspired by the classical beauty of italy. Pujiang brings pure italian style to the heart of a new China: villas with a terrace or garden, classic italian construction materials (such as white granite and red Venetian stucco), piazzas, hotels, shopping arcades, hanging gardens, and even navigable canals. this “Venice of the Orient” is the crowning achievement of a breathtaking career.
