This is a collection of some of my work in the field of landscape architecture. I have a diverse design background that spans film, photography and fine art, all of which have become

instruments to shape my creative production. The exposure I’ve had to these various facets of design have uniquely poised me to bridge the gaps between policy and practice. I strive to propose questions

and solutions for our physical environment that address the changes in cultural conditions and the value systems within our communities. I don’t believe this change emanates from one discipline of design.

Creativity and innovation derive from varied avenues of design, production and curiosity. Through my time traveling and working it has been my consistent and boundless curiosity that allow me to think and research

critically and stay exposed to diverse design methods and practices. My future in landscape architecture involves honest innovation that empowers communities to appreciate

thoughtful environmental intervention.Thank you for you time and interest. Enjoy!

MASTER PLANNING

AECOM/SAN BERNARDNIO URBAN DESIGN STUDIO

Organized as an interdisciplinary endeavor between the Cal Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design and AECOM with the support of the staff of the City of San Bernardino.

This proposl is a holistic community that leverages the geographic context of San Bernardino to provide a direction forward for the city. The overall project draws influence from Warm Creek to the West and pulls the local ecology into the site to provide a foundation for the built environment. Each project within the larger communal context all define intervention strategies that will reclaim San Bernardino’s sense of place.

This intervention proposes a unique sense of place. It soundly unites light industrial zoning with office space and high density loft housing. Through high performance programming, appropriate housing conditioning and attention to its natural ecology, these living systems fuse in a symbiotic productivity to create a progressive, competitive and prosperous future for San Bernardino and its residents.

RESTORING PERSONAL TERRITORIES FOR HOMELESS VETERANS.* GROUP PARTICIPANT: Matthew Gledin

Landscape Architecture as Social Critique, Activism, and Advocacy.8,000 veterans are homeless on the streets of Los Angeles, mostly concentrated into the area of Downtown known as Skid Row. With that population on the rise, there is an increasing demand for facilities tailored to veterans’ needs. We worked with Skid Row’s Weingart Center, a leading transitional housing and support services organization, to develop a plan for a new facility that leverages site design to facilitate personal rehabilitation and social engagement.

DESIGN AND PLANTING PLAN FOR ENGAGEMENT, EDUCATION AND ESCAPE.

This redesign of a previously banal institutional courtyard is in part an educational garden, an engaging display of western native plant species and a retreat to escape the rigors of the classroom. The planting design was developed into 4 native plant communities and boasts over 40 different plant varieties. This space can now be utilized by the Landscape Architecture and Horticulture departments.

PATIO & STEEL FOUNTAIN CONSTRUCITON DETAILS

For this project my goal was to design a tastfully simple restaurant patio that cancelled the street noise to the south and frame and highlight the more natural surroundings to the east and north. This new patio is garnished with a minimalist corten steel fountain. Its form and materials are simple and complement the context of restaurant in function and style.

FORM, TEXTURE, LIGHT & MATERIALS

These two models were conceived using simple shapes to create a complex form. In theory, this form is to be void of any particular context, scale or site. These two models are also an exploration in materials, texture and light. Varying materials have varying pull and play to them. These two are plaster, foam core and plastic. They range from very static to very elastic.

TIMED SKETCHES 1, 10, 20, 30, 60

Sketching from life is a way to critically observe form, scale and perspective. It increases awareness of the built and natural environment and introduces new forms into one owns experience.I am consistently training my eye through sketching in timed increments. As I utilize this technique, it has allowed me to practice seeing and discerning context, perspective and form more immediately.

MIXED MEDIA: Mapping Los Angeles

I have utilized hand and computer graphic techniques to interpret and discover a sense of place and time. My deep rooted commitment to hand graphics allow me to visualize depth, value and context, and apply it to a variety of computer graphic programs to express a diverse sense of space, emotion and theory. The combination play a significant role in my understanding of composition.

MAPPING MOUNTAINS, ZZYZX CALIFORNIA

This exercise was directed toward understanding the natural phenomena of the unique California desert. I used nothing but string, ribbon, tape and found objects to record sight, sound and motion, and represent place and time. Through several applications over the course of two days this photo series depicts wind as natures geomorpholical tool. I had a subject hold the ribbon at varying heights and documented the shapes the ribbon took. Gusts of wind correlated direct representations of the surrounding terrain, and also created a visually stimulating composition.
