By putting food waste into a landfill, we are wasting a valuable resource and perpetuating further environmental issues, including:

- Air Pollution – Emissions into atmosphere

- Ground Water Pollution – Emissions into water

- Land Pollution – Waste on future generations

Regulations lead to depackaging

Regulations have been introduced nationwide which restrict the ability for companies to discard organic waste streams into landfills.

• In September of 2015, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced its first-ever national food waste reduction goal. 1

• The USDA action plan is calling for:

- A 50-percent reduction of food waste by 2030

- New partnerships to create sustainable development practices

- Improvement of food security and natural resources

Nation’s food waste reduction goal

Opportunity exists: To put it in perspective, in the US, food waste annual volumes are equivalent to green waste totals.

Regulation versus suggestion

Going green through organic bans or recycling mandates:

States: California, Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts

Cities: Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, and New York City

Regulations only succeed when enforced, until then, it is only a suggestion.

Cost/Savings Analysis

Food Service company processing 7,300 TPY of SSO

Company operating WITHOUT depackaging

Disposal Fee: 6,900* TPY x $60/ton = $414,000*400 tons of aluminum recycled The Depackaging Difference

Disposal Savings: • $414,000 - $123,750 = $290,250 or

• 70% savings vs hauling to the landfill

Revenue increase: • +$91,000 from aluminum & plastic.

Company operating WITH depackaging

Inorganic Capture Rates (700 tons):• 400 Tons Aluminum @ $.38/lb = $304,000

• +$76,000/yr due to cleaner material• 300 Tons of Plastic @ $50/ton = $15,000

Organic Capture Rate (6,600 tons):• Approx. 25% solids & 75% liquid (4,950 tons)• 1,650 tons (solids hauled for repurposing)• 1,650 x $75/ton = $123,750/yr hauling fees

Total difference is +$381,250/yr

Return on Investment: 1.25 yrs
