What is COVID-19?
• COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus Disease) - is a disease caused by the
coronavirus: SARS-CoV-2 (2019). It belongs to a large family of viruses
that can cause illness in humans and animals.
• COVID-19 is most-commonly spread from an infected person through:
• Respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing;
• Close and prolonged personal contact such as touching or shaking
hands or living in the same home, or;
• Touching something with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose or eyes before washing your hands

19 year-old COVID survivor
shares his story and
some advice
19-year-old Matt Greenshields from Okotoks,
Alberta is one of the youngest survivors of the disease in Canada. Dawna Friesen talks to Greenshields about his fight with COVID-19,
when he got sick, how quickly he deteriorated and his message to young people.
Common Symptoms of COVID-19
• It may take up to 14 days after exposure to COVID-19 for
symptoms to appear.
• Individuals with COVID-19 may experience mild symptoms
or more serious symptoms.
• In some cases, individuals can be infected and carry the
• virus but never show any symptoms (asymptomatic).
• There is always a risk that there can be a transmission of
• the virus from someone who has no symptoms to another
person.
For a complete list of symptoms, visit the
COVID-19Self-Assessment
webpage

‘Peel Health - Core Four’
COVID-19. Peel Health - Core Four Video
1. Stay apart - Maintain 2-metres from others.
2. Lather up - Wash your hands often with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
3. Mask up - Wear a non-medical mask.
4. Get tested - If you think you might have COVID-19 or have been exposed to it you should get tested. While waiting for test results, stay home, self-isolate and prevent potential spread.
● All members entering and exiting the school should be wearing
masks.
● Students should be wearing masks while at school.
● Contact the main office if you need assistance or have a question about mask use.
● Masks need to cover the nose, mouth and chin.
● Students should visit the Gov’t of Ontario COVID-19 self-assessment site and
complete the self-assessment daily. All staff and students must self-screen every day
before attending school.

Some Important Mask Reminders…
For masks to offer you
adequate protection,
rather than serving to
spread COVID-19 germs,
they must be handled, removed and stored
properly (a sealed container
or zip-lock bag is ideal).
• Reduce the spread of COVID-19 and other infections
(stay healthy), wash your hands when they are visibly
dirty, after using the washroom, after blowing your nose and (if) you sneeze
into your hands (but try to sneeze into your arm instead, near the elbow joint).
Wash Your Hands - Health Canada Video
Wash Your Hands…
• When you arrive and enter the school each day…
• When you arrive to your classroom (for all classes you have)…
• When you exit your classroom…
• Hand sanitizing stations will be set up at entry doors and all
individuals, including students, must sanitize their hands
immediately upon entering the building. Students should also
sanitize upon entry and exit from their classrooms.
Sanitize Your Hands…
Computers,
keyboards and other school items will be
disinfected daily.Ask your
teachers.
Hand Hygiene Info Tips. City of Toronto. Multiple languages
Disinfectant to

following areas are closed until further notice (some still offer
services in a different format):
Learning Commons (Library)
Cafeteria (no food service/vending machines)
Weight Room
Change Rooms
Carpeted Drama Room
Interacting With Others - Hallways
• Please pay close attention to and follow one-way traffic flow signs in
the hallways and stairs (particularly during school start and dismissal
times, stairs are one-way - either up or down, until traffic has cleared).
• When walking through the halls, stay 2 meters apart from other people.
• Try to avoid stopping in the hall.
• Please safely walk around anyone who is stopped, maintaining
distancing.
Entering & Exiting the School
Please make sure you
follow physical-distancing
of 2 meters at all times
wherever you are on
school property
• Starting Sep.14th, there will be specific entrance and exit doors that you will use to gain entry and
to exit the school. Stay tuned for more details to be shared.
In and Out of the Building & Late Arrival
● Students should remain inside the building during the instructional block
(exceptions include classes that are organized by teachers to go outside).
● Students needing to leave the building before dismissal must report to the office
to sign out.
● If students arrive late, they should go to the main doors and then go directly to
their class and not to the main office. Teachers should mark the students late.
Our School Buses…
● The number of students at each bus stop will be limited to ensure safe physical distancing for the
run. Windows should be left open whenever possible to help with air ventilation.
● Masks/ face coverings are mandatory on all school buses.
● Please follow all safety rules on our buses.
● Students should be assigned seats and a record of the seating plan should be kept by the school
and driver to assist with contact tracing in the case of a student or driver contracting COVID-19.
● Students who live in the same household or are in the same classroom cohort should be seated
together.
● The seat behind the driver will remain empty, unless the seat is needed for the driver’s children.
Washrooms…● Washrooms have a maximum capacity signage, with signs inside to have stalls/urinals out
of service for physical distancing measures.
● One student at a time out of each class (max.) - respect others and limit your out- of-class
time. Wash your hands with soap and water please.
● Students will need to use the laminated hall pass (to be disinfected after trips).
● Isolation Rooms: Room 102 and the Guidance Conference Room (if needed)
Used for anyone who is unwell.
● Shared Spaces - signage will indicate when the room can or cannot be used.
Lockers & Personal Belongings
● Lockers will not be available at this time. Any locks put on lockers will be removed.
● Please bring only the essentials to school and what you bring must be stored
neatly by your desk. Leave valuables at home.
● Efforts will be made to provide lockers to students later in the school year, if it is
deemed safe to do so.
Student belongings
● Students may bring their own personal items to school daily, but the items must return home
with them daily. These items may include, but are not limited to:
○ backpack or bag (that should fit under/beside a desk)
○ computer, tablet or other device - we encourage responsible use of BYOD○ binder/text for the course for that day
○ Re-usable/refillable water bottle (SLSS is an eco-school)
Learn more about Eco-Schools
Student belongings
● As there will not be a lunch period during the secondary school day, students should not bring
lunch to school. Deliveries of food to the school should not be arranged.
● Personal belongings should be kept near your desk area at all times and should not be shared
between students. Please follow teacher-direction with regards to personal belongings.
Reminder - leave all ‘non-essential to learning’ valuables at home.
● Student backpacks should be kept at a designated spot in the classroom (not in hallways or
other unsupervised areas) where they can be individually placed away from other student
belongings, if space permits.
BYOD - ‘Bring Your Own Device’
• Students will no longer be permitted to share devices.
• Please bring your own device, or, if you received a school
board device for distance learning, please ensure you bring it
with you to class daily.
• If you borrowed a device from the school last Spring and no
longer need it, please notify Mr. Lane, VP (as soon as
possible), so we can make arrangements for you to return it.
Sychronous & Asynchronous Learning…
● The adaptive model is a blend of in-person and at-home learning that will be
arranged in assigned groups called COHORTS. Students are expected to
participate for a full day, every day. Every high school student in the Peel region is
assigned to one of two cohorts: Cohort A or Cohort B.
● The cohorts will identify which days you attend class at school and which days you
engage in distance learning online. Your classroom cohort will ensure you will be in
a space with a limited number of students. Based on your cohort group, students will
attend school on specific days of the week.
Quadmesters…
What is Quadmester?
Semester 1 Quadmester Schedule
Quadmester 1: September 8 to November 13, 2020
(Civics/Careers Turnaround - last day October 9, 2020)

(Civics/Careers Turnaround - last day December 18, 2020)
What will assessment and
evaluation look like?
Will there be final
evaluations (exams)?
Gradual Return to School - Cohort Schedule
• Students are divided into Cohort A or Cohort B.
• Cohorts will attend school in-person on an adapted school schedule and will be required to participate in distance learning during the school day when not physically attending.
• Secondary students with a high level of special education needs, who are unable to study from home, will be able to attend daily.
• Cohort classes will be limited to approximately 15 students.
• School day will be shortened so there will not be a lunch period
Gradual Return to School - Cohort Schedule
• During the school day, if a cohort is not scheduled to be at school for in-person learning, students will be engaged in distance learning at home with opportunities for real-time (synchronous) and independent (non-synchronous) learning.
