The ATEP
traveled to
Sacramento on
March 23rd to
participate in
the California
Athletic Train-
ers’ Associa-
tion “Hit the
H i l l ” d a y .
CATA organ-
ized the day at
the State Capi-
tol to lobby for
two new bills
that are de-
signed to help
ensure high
school athlete
safety. A total
of sixty-two athletic trainers and athletic training
students spent the day visiting with legislators to
promote Assembly Bill (AB) 1646Catastrophic
Injury Training for High School Coaches and As-
sembly Bill 1647 Catastrophic Injury Prevention.
CATA President Mike West and FWATA Govern-
mental Affairs Committee Chair Mike
Chisar (both friends and supporters of
the CBU ATEP) led this successful
event with the help of J. Walcher
Communications (PR Firm) and Aaron
Read and Associates (Lobby Firm).
Our students started the day learn-
ing about governmental affairs in ath-
letic training and were introduced to
the process of lobbying at the state
capital. The students then shadowed
their mentor Athletic Trainers in meet-
ings with their respective senators and
assembly members in an effort to cre-
ate support for AB 1646 and 1647. By
the day’s end, the group had interacted
with over half the state’s legislators.
CBU’s MSAT program
created quite an im-
pression by bringing
the largest contingent
of athletic training fac-
ulty and students to
the capital. The stu-
dents were led by Pro-
fessor Baker, Adam
Cady, and Belinda San-
chez. ATEP students in
attendance included
Tiffany Duran, Lauren
Hawthorne, Todd
Conger, Mark West,
Veronica Mondaca,
Karissa Scherer, Mel-
ody Mohebbi, Chase
Paulson, and Jennifer
(Bing) Vetter.
We are very proud of the students that took
the time to promote our profession, support our
legislative acts, and to be a leader of professional-
ism for ATEP involvement in California.

The ATEP would like to thank Renee Hendershot and
Amber McKee for their commitment and service to the
program and our students. We are sad to see them move
on from the ATEP, but are very appreciative for their ef-
forts in educating our students and helping the program
grow. We would like to remind them though...that while
they may move on to new adventures….”once a Lancer,
always a Lancer.” We would also like to extend congratu-
lations to Amber and her husband, Jason, over the newly
announced pregnancy.
The ATEP would also like to thank Dr. Jan Kodat and
her family for hosting the annual end of the year Gradua-
tion and Alumni party. We had a great time celebrating
our graduating class and spending time with the ACIs,
team physicians, and alumni that make our program great.
We look forward to seeing all of you there next year.
Congratulations to the following Lancer alumni and family for
their accomplishments. Our apologies in advance for any
person or event we have missed… it was not done purposely.

The CBU Athletic Training Student Club participated in
several events throughout the month of March to cele-
brate NATA's National Athletic Training Month. It all
started with the ATSC holding a successful "I heart AT" t-
shirt fundraiser, speared by Linda Pon, where students,
staff, faculty, family and friends supported the effort by pur-
chasing and wearing shirts throughout the month. Next,
ATSC members reached out to college and high school
students in the Riverside community with goals of increas-
ing awareness of the athletic training profession. An infor-
mation booth was hosted on the CBU campus while sev-
eral ATSC members served as guest speakers at Poly High
School and RCC Norco athletic training classes. In addi-
tion, HR1137 forms for the Medicare Act were promoted
at these events. To top off National Athletic Training
Month, ATSC members were well represented in Sacra-
mento as they joined efforts with other athletic trainers for
Hit the Hill Day. Thank you to everyone who participated
and showed their support during our busy month of
March! -Winnie Voong

CBU ATEP Visits the LA Clippers & Rancho
Cucamonga Quakes
CBU ATEP attempts to expose its students to the
profession of athletic training at all levels of practice.
This semester Cal Baptist students had the opportu-
nity to visit JoHan Wang, Associate Athletic Trainer
for the Los Angeles Clippers as well as Mike Met-
calfe, Athletic Trainer the Rancho Cucamonga
Quakes, Angels Baseball affiliate. The Clippers visit
offered an inside look at athletic training in the NBA
setting, a presentation by CBU Alum Milo Andersen
on what it takes to be an intern, as well as a tour of
the Clippers practice facility. Mike Metcalfe led a
tour of the facilities, hosted a Q&A session for our
students during pre-game batting practice, and in-
vited CBU to stay for the ball game. Both visits
proved to be great experiences for our ATEP!

CBU’s Department of Kinesiology, in conjunction with the Department of Athletics’ Athletic Training Staff,
offered several continuing education opportunities for faculty, staff, and local certified athletic trainers through-
out the past year. The lecture series for the 2009-2010 academic year featured select professors, researchers,
and allied healthcare providers in Southern California. It also included the CATA State Meeting in December.
During the Fall semester, the MSAT welcomed Robert Kersey, PhD, ATC, CSCS to speak on Anabolic-
Androgenic Steroids and (CBC Alum) Lee Brown, EdD, CSCS*D, FNSCA, FACSM to speak on the Science of
Speed Training.
Our Spring semester lineup included Jared Coburn, PhD, CSCS, FNSCA speaking on Measuring Muscle Per-
formance, Kavin Tsang, PhD, ATC presenting research on therapeutic modalities and evidence based practice
in healthcare, and Commander Christopher Dewing, MD discussing orthopaedic evaluation and surgical tech-
niques for Femoral Acetabular Impingement.
We have had great speakers this year and look forward to continuing our lecture series next year. If you have
any requests for lecture topics or guest speakers, please be sure to pass those along to the ATEP.

Summer Professional Development A big “THANKS” to Jim Clover, Jim Winn, and the SPORT Foundation for putting on another
excellent Practical Applications in Sports Medicine event this June in Palm Springs. The confer-
ence offered a great group of faculty presenting and an outstanding cadaver experience to round
out the outstanding learning opportunity. We also had a GREAT ATEP turnout—we look for-
ward to an even bigger representation next year—and highly recommend that our students/
alumni get involved with PASM next year!
Up next is the NATA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. If you are in attendance, be sure to show
your love for Jim Clover, who will be presenting this year!
For those attending the FWATA Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposia in Hawaii—be sure to
check out presentations by ATEP Alumni, Faculty and Staff—including Winnie Voong, Jennifer
Parker, Adam Cady, Belinda Sanchez, and Professor Baker. Also, be on the lookout for
the Winnie Voong organized ATEP social to take place at FWATA.

For this addition of the Lancer Alum Focus, we caught up with
Sarah Anderson, MS, ATC. After completing the ATEP at CBU, Sarah be-
came the head athletic trainer for Murrieta Mesa High School. In Decem-
ber 2009, she was contacted by the head athletic trainer at Sports Condi-
tioning and Rehabilitation (SCAR) through her resume being posted on the
NATA website. SCAR supported her in the certification process and she
obtained her ATC credential in 4/2010. We were able to catch up with
Sarah to get her thoughts on life as an ATC and his Lancer roots.
What is your current employment position:
I currently work as a certified athletic trainer for SCAR. I work from
11:30am to 8:00pm Monday through Friday.
I am responsible for providing athletic training services to a wide popula-
tion of physically active people ranging from youth to geriatric. My main
responsibility is to assess the strengths and weakness of clients and de-
velop strength and conditioning/injury prevention programs designed to
target the needs and goals of my clients. I also work with physical thera-
pists and other athletic trainers in the rehabilitation of injured athletes.
Our clinic is very unique; it includes physical therapy clinic, gym, and an
athletic training clinic. The athletic trainers work closely with the physical
therapists and personal trainers. We all work very well as a team in mak-
ing sure our clients/patients are receiving the best treatment and care pos-
sible. I am very happy with my current position and work with great peo-
ple. I know I still have a lot to learn and enjoy that SCAR has so much to
offer.
What do you love about your job? What keeps you coming back?
I love helping people reach their goals. I enjoy getting to know my patients/
clients and building a rapport with them. The kids are amazing and keep
me on my toes. Although some days are crazier than others my cowork-
ers and clients keep me coming back each day.
What is the toughest part of job/least favorite?
Just like in the classroom I would say the administrative part of the job is
my least favorite. I would much rather be on the floor of the gym interact-
ing with my coworkers, patients, clients and gym members.
What is a typical day like for you?
A typical work day in the life of Sarah Anderson would be arriving at SCAR
around 11:30am. We generally see anywhere from 10-25 athletes per day.
Our work with the athletes consists of taking them through their injury
prevention or rehab program and providing any treatment that may be
necessary. As part of my job I also do some personal training. I can see
about 2 to 3 personal training clients a day. Throughout the day I am con-
stantly catching up on administrative duties and completing any necessary
athletic training projects, including one of my favorites, laundry. On
Wednesday evenings, I teach a class for runners called Runner’s Work-
shop. I teach the runners basic form, technique, and strengthening exer-
cises. I also teach a TRX Suspension Training class on Thursday nights. I
really like teaching this class and have enjoyed learning about and working
with the TRX.
What are the similarities/differences between your setting and
the traditional AT?
There is limited first aid and emergency care provided in the clinical set-
ting. Although with emergency care it is still important to stay current
because when working with elderly patients there is a higher chance of
cardiac and other emergency aliments.
What is your favorite professional highlight from your career so
far?
Passing the BOC exam!!! Getting a full time job with some of the coolest
coworkers a girl could ask for.
Who are your mentors?
Marilyn Oliver, the program director at University of La Verne and Rusty
Baker. Thank you both for your time, support, encouragement, and men-
torship. You both played a significant role in my success.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received during your
career?
Stay in contact with your mentors, peers, and colleagues and do not be
afraid to ask for help. In this profession we have to lean on each other to
grow as clinicians and as a profession. Also, do not over analyze the BOC
exam. Think of your college courses as your study guide for the class and
the BOC exam is just a cumulative exam of your college career. Learn
along the way!

What is you fondest memory of your time in the CBU ATEP?
I have so many memories from the time I spent at CBU that it is hard
to pick just one. I am grateful for the time I had with my classmates and
the bonds we created with each other. The staff was and is very
supportive and encouraging. I am so grateful for the relationships I have
created with the staff and students.
What was your toughest class and who was the toughest
professor at CBU? Why?
“Management in professional Issues” was the toughest class for because
it was a class of little interest for me, but little did I know it was going
to be the class I used most after graduating from CBU. We carry out
administrative tasks daily at SCAR. It is a very important part of our
job.
Advice for current ATC/young professional/anyone interested
in your setting etc?
The best advice I can give is to prepare ahead. Set goals and work
towards them because time flies. Once you have graduated the learning
has only just begun. I have gained so much knowledge since I have
graduated. This is a learning profession and we will always be students.
Anything else you would like to say to the Lancer Family?
Thank you all so very much for all of your support! I would not be
where I am today without all of the support I have received from staff
and classmates.
From Left to Right: Lauren Hawthorne, Linda Pon, Lauren Briley, Rey Flores, John Hsu, Alonzo Green, Joe Luat, Jennifer
Parker, Winnie Voong, Veronica Mondaca, and Alexis Pettway.
