At this stage of the design, massing should have developed far enought to merit detailed investigation of internalspaces and facade.Build on the chosen design concept by incorporating themes into both thesection and facade.

A NEW CONVENTION?Combining rule based process withnew digital modelling tools, exploremethods of creating form outside of traditional building systems. Emphasisis to be placed on the ‘possible’ ratherthan the probable, the expected.

ITERATEDevelop a series of rules and condi-tions that allow for iterative testingof form and volume.

A method of evaluating iterations is

crucial to move on from this stage.

POPULATION / SIZE / AFFORDABILITYUsing an urban train line as a point of reference, exploreoptions for alternate types of housing in Australia.Examine issues of appropriate size, typology, amenity.

STRATEGY 1: Concentrate density close to train station. Zone bands around station reducing density further fron station.

STRATEGY 2: Identify sites with the tallest built volume. Explore potential for small footprint/high yield density.

STRATEGY 3: Identify largest sites by area. Development of these plots will leave smallest total sites affected.

STRATEGY 4: Examine existing infrastructure for opportunities to limit car travel and maximise green corridors.

STRATEGY 5: Select small narrow plots for fine grain distribution, balance lost private space with community areas.

A MODULAR SOLUTION:Develop a combination of modulesthat will accomodate expected occupancy patterns. Note shift intraditional household numbers towards single and small family residences.Envelope and facade of modulescan be informed by the local con-text. Examine residential building stock and incorporate common materials into the design. Facade rhythm can be read fromabstracting the areas street layout.

SITE SKETCHES:1. Develop a series of site drawings over time payingparticular attention to terrain, landscape relationships andthe site specifics.

CONTEXT ANALYSIS:2. Break down local buildingstock into materials, analysingtheir position in relation to thestreet, major features andisolate one detail to create a catalogue of surroundings.

Page 28: Lance van Maanen Architecture 2009-2011

28

IMPORTANT: At this stage drawings should be exploratory.Avoid locking an idea down too early.

SCRIBBLEDevelop a quick series of pencil (or similarmedium that is quick, erasable) sketches thataim to resolve position and orientation of building.

Making sure a site model is accurately built, test massingto scale. Adjust building height and volume with differentiterations. Preliminary material tests are encouraged.

NOTE:Models are to be quick and easily changed. These models are design tools, notpresentation pieces.

Page 31: Lance van Maanen Architecture 2009-2011

31

If possible, obtain 1:1 scale sample materials to test for performance (flexibility, strength etc) and visual qualities. Photograph model studies.

NOTE:Photographing models with a macroor similar lens yields best results.

CATALOGUECategorise built elements and develop axonometric diagram showing relationships between components.Working from outside in, or inside out- document materials.

Items should include thefollowing at a minimum.

1. Base/slab

2. Primary structure

3. Secondary structure

4. Internal circulation

5. Interior materials and relevant joinery items

6. Glazing/openings

7. Weather sealing

Residence is to be locatedclose to water course andlargely vegetated landscape.Flooding and fires are commonthreats - ensure building designtakes this into account.
