Our custom of putting Xs at the end of letters to symbolize kisses grew out ofmedieval legal practices. In order to indicate good faith and honesty, the sign ofSaint Andrew was placed after the signature on all important documents. This signis quite like the letter x.

Contracts and agreements were not considered binding until each signer addedSaint Andrews cross after his name. Then he was required to kiss it to guaranteethe faithful performance of his obligations.Over the centuries the origin of the ceremony was forgotten. People associatedx with the kiss instead of the pledge of good faith, and the modern custom wasborn. Adding to that, indicating hugs, the O was adopted to symbolize wrapping onesarms around another.Today, letters signed with Xs and Os represents ones affectionto another.Dont forget your sweetheart on Valentines Day February 14th!

Hello, Anglers. Most of you know my rst love is bass shing

but In this months column I thought I woulddevote space to crappie coverage since I have hadso many questions. In recent weeks Toledo hasproduced some really awesome white perch innumerous places on the lake but especially at thefamous Chicken Coop. Many readers are awareof this area of the lake but numerous others are

not.The results of the past 2-3 winters have beendisappointing but not this year!! It has been off thecharts. The Chicken Coop is located on the Texasside of the lake about four miles (by water) northof Pendleton Bridge which is the mid-lake area of Toledo.

However, with low water levels and changing weather conditions I would suggest driving toit via TX Highway 87. Using Hemphill, TX as

The Coop Comes Through!by Pro Guide, Joe Joslin

DeRidder, LAs Victor Martin with a pair of huge Toledos Chicken Coop crappie.

a reference point travel north on Highway 87to Milam, TX then on another 6-8 miles to theintersection of Highway 276 where you take aright and it will take you straight there. A goodplace to get bait and info is Holly Park Marinalocated on Patroons Bayou on the right of Hwy276. You can launch there at Holly Park or

proceed to the lake another mile and launch atNewells which does put you closer.

This well-known crappie hole was named suchbecause of several large commercial chickenhouses that at one time lined the top of the ridgenear the river bank.It is here where a stretch of the Sabine River bed touches the west side of thelake and stays close to shore for nearly 2 miles. This deep stretch of the river is The Chicken Coopand it has developed a reputation over the years of producing almost unbelievable numbers of crappieduring the coldest days of winter usually 6 to 8 weeks, depending on weather conditions.

Ideal conditionsincludeclearwater conditions, lowwater levels pluswater temperatures50 degreesandcolder. You gotit......thoseareall in placecurrentlyand shouldremain such at least into earlyFebruary. However, whenthe water temps warm, these shwill leave thedeepwater andheadupnearbyfeeder creeks to spawnbecausethe femalesareloadedwith roe(eggs). But forrightnow, theyarehappy feeding onshad(gourmetbait- sh)andhanging outin thesanctuary of theSabine River.

In late January I thought would take a day off from guiding/bass shing and invited a couple of buddies from DeRidder,LA (Lynn Clayton and VictorMartin) to catch some crappie so we headed to theChicken Coop.We started shing that morning at7:15 a.m and shed until a cold front hit which was about 11:00 a.m.(about 3.5 hours) and endedup with over 50 crappie with nearly half of them weighing between 1.5 and 2.5 pounds. We caughtthem in 32 feet with live shiners. It was a blast!!

Water temp at The Coop that morning was47 degrees. All boats that we encountered werecatching sh and in my many years of shing with electronics, I have never seen so muchshad(bait sh) and sh on the screens of mygraphs/depth nders. We used line from 8 to 12 lbtest and at sunrise it did not seem to matter what

size line. However, later in the morning whenthere was more light, the 8 lb test Berkley 100%Fluorocarbon de nitely got more bites.

We rigged drop shot style with the hook abovethe weight about 12 to 18 inches using as light as weight possible (mostly 1/8 oz) which allows theshiner to move around more freely. We hookedthe shiners in the upper back close to the tail and

shed vertically. We were shing over brush and we did hung up some but not so much that it wasa real problem. We would let out rig work itself down through the brush to the bottom and thenreel up a couple of rounds and leave it aloneletting the shiner work which usually did nottake very long. If the hook had a shiner on it youcan work it through the brush easily.

Most of our hang-ups happened when a crappie would get the shiner and we would try to get thebare hook back up through the brush. That didnot happen too often as most of the time you werepulling a sh up through the brush. We cleanedour catch and set aside some for an afternoon shfry. We coated them with a light coat of mustard, then came Tonys Seafood Seasoning followed bya good dusting of stone-ground yellow corn mealand dropped them in peanut oil at 325 degrees.Nuff Said! They were awesome! What a day...twogood friends, tight lines and fresh fried crappie!

The renovations at Rayburn Country Clubare almost complete. Now its just time for theunveiling.

According to Paul Calame, general manager forthe Rayburn Country Resort, the renovations arenow complete at the hotel and the golf course isready for action once again.

The renovations are now complete and the golf course looks fantastic. Now we just have to waitfor the unveiling, Calame said. I think xing up

these amenities is going to be huge for RayburnCountry. We are now attracting outside people tocome up here and enjoy these facilities.

They also come and enjoy the Pineywoods andthe lakes and nd out what a great area of thecountry this is, Calame said. The ultimate goalis to get them to come out and buy some propertyout here as well. Calame said all the rooms at theresort were gutted and included the installation of

new plumbing xtures as well as the installation of at screen televisions in each room. The rooms are up and running so we are

de nitely up and running in the lodge right now,Calame said.

On the links, the renovations are now completeon the course. Calame said the back nine of thecourse was opened on Thanksgiving weekend.

One area that is still under construction is theclubhouse. Originally, the plans were to renovate

the existing clubhouse but when work started it wasdetermined that it might be better to completely gutthe clubhouse and start over.

They had a basement on that old clubhouseand we have lled that in with dirt and compactedthat in, Calame said.We have started to set the

oors for a one-story clubhouse now. Presently, the clubhouse duties are being run out of Rayburn Hall, including a golf shop and lunches

and meetings are held at the hall. Older members might remember that Rayburn Hall was the originalclubhouse for Rayburn Country.

Calame said the feedback from visitors to the course and lodge has been fantastic.People areabsolutely loving it, Calame said. We had several large shing groups stay at the lodge and they wereamazed how much better it is now than what it was. The sale of the ownership rights of the areasamenities was approved two years ago by a vote of Rayburn Country residents.

Everybody out here is jumping up and down with excitement over this, said Rayburn County BoardMember Gary Collins. This is going to revitalize the whole area out here. The renovation is expectedto cost $5-7 million to refurbish Rayburn facilities. According to Gerald Cole, president of the Rayburn

Country Association, the improvements will serve to attract new residents and expand the commerccustomer base.

We want to have the best golf course in the area, Collins said. We want a golf course that woulattract corporate outings and bring in people from Shreveport and Dallas to the area. Rayburn Councomprised of 4,400 lots, 1,000 of which have been improved or built upon.

We just think this whole project is a great opportunity for us, Calame said. We will try to get thback to what it was originally made for and that was to be the showcase for this region.

The renovations out here had to be done, Calame said. The places out here were going in the wdirection. We needed something to make this an attraction again.

Father and son team Larry and Gary King weighed in a ve shlimit of 19.04 lbs. to win the January 22nd Working Warriors OpenBass Tournament. The team also caught the big sh for the day witha 6.20 lb largemouth. Second place was won by James Merrill andElmer Loftin with a ve sh limit of 17.85 lbs.

Almost every team that shed the tournament turned in a limit of sh and many teams reported catching three limits of sh during the

course of the day. Water temperatures remain around 50 degrees andthis pattern should mean that

sh are beginning to stage upfor the early spring spawn. Theshing should just keep getting

better as long as the weatherholds with February traditionallyproducing the biggest sh of the year. Rat-L-Traps and weightlessSenkos should yield good resultsfor local anglers.
