    Black Bass 101

Todd Driscoll, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

Depending on whom you are talking to,the black bassnamemight mean a couple of different things. Most often, I nd thatwhen anglers refer to black bass, they are speci cally referring tolargemouth bass. However, from a biology perspective, the phraseblack bassis actually a group that includes eight closely relatedspecies classi ed by the scienti c genus Micropterus. In other words, although a largemouth bass is a black bass, so are spotted bass, smallmouth bass, and four other similar species.

Backing up the classi cation ladder a couple of steps, black basses

are part of another group of sh referred to as the Perciformes. The Perciformes is actually a large, diverse group of shes andincludes freshwater species like walleye and sauger (perches),whitebass and striped bass (temperate basses),and crappies and sun sh(centrarchids).Although black bass are distant relatives of all thesespecies, they are close cousins to crappies and sun sh and aregrouped with them in a classi cation called Centrarchidae.

As I mentioned above, black basses include eight Micropterusspecies. Up until 2008,only seven species were recognized, but now the Alabama bass (Micropterus henshalli) is classi ed as a distinctspecies (used to be a subspecies of the spotted bass). Most anglersare probably familiar with only 3 or 4 of them,as the others arenot present in Texas.Obviously, the most common black bass isthe largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides).Although originallynative to the central and southeastern U.S.and northern Mexico,

largemouth bass have been introduced into every state but Alaskaand have been widely stocked in Mexico,Central and South America,Europe, and Africa. There are two largemouth bass subspecies:northern largemouth bass (M.salmoides salmoides) and Floridalargemouth bass (M.salmoides oridanus). The Florida subspeciesis originally native to Florida and southern Georgia, but has beenwidely distributed throughout the current largemouth bass range, including Texas. Generally speaking,Florida largemouth bass attaina greater maximum size than northern largemouth bass. The state

record is 18.18 pounds (1992),and the world record is 22.25 pounds, and is shared between a Georgia sh caught in 1932,and a morerecent (2009) sh caught in Japan.

The four other black bass species found in Texas include thespotted bass (Micropterus punctulatus),Alabama bass, smallmouthbass (Micropterus dolomieu),and the Guadalupe bass (Micropterustreculi). Spotted bass are native to the central and southernMississippi River and Gulf Coast drainages, including Texas, butrarely exceed 3 pounds. The Alabama bass has been introducedin west Texas, and a new state record (5.62 pounds) was caughtin 2011. The world record Alabama bass was caught in Californiaand weighed 10.25 pounds (2001). The spotted bass and Alabamabass are very similar in appearance, and require genetic testing fordifferentiation.

Smallmouth bass are native to the northcentral and northeastern

U.S. Although smallmouth bass have been widely stocked, they preferrocky habitats and cooler water temperatures. There also are twosubspecies of smallmouth bass: the common smallmouth bass (M.dolomieu dolomieu) and Ozark smallmouth bass (M.dolomieuvelox). They have been successfully introduced into Texas, primarilyin north to south-central rivers and reservoirs, and the state recordis 7.93 pounds (1998).The world record was caught in Tennessee(1955) and weighed 11.94 pounds.

The Guadalupe bass is only found in Texas and it is recognized as

the of cial state sh.This species prefers owing waters associatedwith riverine habitats. It is primarily found in the San Antonio,Guadalupe, and Colorado rivers and portions of the Brazos Riverdrainage.Guadalupe bass are relatively small members of the black bass group, with the Texas and world record at 3.69 pounds (1983).

The other less abundant black basses include the redeye or Coosabass (Micropterus coosae), shoal bass (Micropterus cataractae),andSuwannee bass (Micropterus notius). All three species are native tostreams in the southeastern U.S.The shoal bass world record is 8.75pounds,whereas the redeye and Suwannee world records are only3.13 and 3.88 pounds, respectively.

WACKY WORMING....a beginning anglers dreampattern and a tournament anglers friend.

    by pro guide Joe Joslin

In my opinion, there is not a more productive technique for thebeginning angler and and also the experienced angler than thewacky worm. How successful can this technique be? My recordsshow that we catch hundreds of bass on wacky rigs each year andone year registered over 2,000 and many were caught by anglersjust starting in bass shing.

I used the wacky worm method to introduce my wife to bassangling and she has become an avid angler. This is a light tackletechnique but is not necessarily ultra light. My largest bass ever, aToledo 11 pound 8 oz. beauty, came with a wacky worm on lighttackle and this method will also produce a lot of action from allsizes of bass. It is not uncommon in the spring and fall to catch30-40 bass a day with wacky rigs.

UPDATE: I just got off the lake (March 15th) after just landingthe 7th bass in my shing career over 10 pounds which weighedin at 10.30 pounds or roughly 10 pounds 5 ozs. Guess what? It wascaught on a 5 inch Senko shed wacky style. Four of the sevenof these double digit bass were caught on a wacky rig so this isalso a super pattern for trophy bass. There is no doubt I am soldon it especially in the spring and fall.

As far as line with wacky worming, my favorite line for yearshas been 10 lb. Berkley Big Game and I still use it on occasion. However, that was before Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon came on themarket. For the past 18 months I have used 8-10 lb test BerkleyFluorocarbon when wacky rigging with great success. This spring(2011) has been extremely successful. Berkley Fluorocarbon isbasically transparent in the water which is a huge plus since I shthe southern portions of Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn most of the time. Other awesome characteristics of uorocarbon are itssensitivity to detect light strikes, low stretch to help with hook-setsplus the line is very durable. The only negative is the cost whichis about 3 times the cost of regular mono however my experienceis that it will last 2 or 3 times as long as mono lines. One thingabout using uorocarbon is that once you do, it is dif cult to goback to mono lament line.

My recent 10.30 pound largemouth mentioned above wascaught on 10 lb test Berkley 100% Fluorocarbon spooled on anAbu Garcia Revo STX reel with 6.4 :1 ratio and a 6 10 mediumheavy action Abu Garcia Veritas rod. For all anglers, a proper knotis vital!! For 95% of my shing, I use a Palomar knot and use it100% with wacky worming. The palomar is easy to tie and hasthe best knot strength of most, if not all, quality knots. If you donot know how to tie one, nd an angler who does and get them toshow you how! If you will send me a self addressed, STAMPED en-velope, I will send you a Berkley knot card with an easy-to-follow

diagram of how to tie a Palomar. An improper knot will lose some nice sh for you produc-

ing an Ache-ee/Break-ee Heart and, at times, causing you toexpand your vocabulary. The way I rig a wacky is to take a 2/0 or3/0 Daiichi Round Bend worm hook and tie a palomar knot. Myfavorite wacky plastics include Berkley Gulp! Sinking Minnow,

5 inch Senko, Berkley Wacky Crawler (5 and 7 inch) and a trick worm.

I hook the worm near or in the egg sack (middle of the worm)and leave the hook completely exposed. Some anglers use aweadless hook with a thin wire but I do not like that approach, es-pecially in clear water like I encounter most of the time on southToledo and Rayburn. I use no weight in the Sinking Minnow orSenko but insert a 1 inch paneling nail into the nose of the otherplastics. I have also started to use a clever, new weight for wackyand other weightless worms called a Hookangel. Check it out atHookangel.com. Also, since uorocarbon sinks, it helps the wormto sink and it makes a huge difference.

As mentioned earlier, I use spinning tackle a lot of the timewacky rigging for a number of reasons. It gives my arms a break from using bait cast equipment and also throws the bait easier. However, since the smooth throwing Abu Garcia Revos have comeon the scene, I now nd myself using one for wacky shing a lotmore often.

Now that we have our rigs sh ready, lets get it in the water. Ilike to sh a wacky around submerged grass which is how I use it90% of the time. I cast my wacky rig usually in depths from 6-16and let it settle to the bottom. Note...it is very common for the bassto hit the bait on the fall so be careful when you start to take upslack. To sh a wacky, you need to be a line watcher. If you feel aslight tap, lift the rod carefully and watch your line. A lot of thetime you will see the line moving, while other times it will just feeltight with a slight movement.

When working the worm, I lift my wacky rod just slightly tryingto keep the worm close to the grass or other structure. Remember, the worm is light and if you work it too fast you keep it out of the

sh zone. Also, you do not have to rush if you get a bite but slowlylower you rod, take up slack and set your hook with a pullinstead of a hard jerk. Remember, you are using light line andif you set the hook like a weight-lifter, you will break off a lot of

sh. Since your hook is exposed, the hook set is much easier thana Texas and Carolina rig. Get as much slack out of your line aspossible before you set the hook.

REMOVING HOOKS FROM BASS: At times when wacky worming,a bass will get the hook down deep in the throat. Take great care

on not hurting the sh. I have developed a technique where I turnthe bass over on its back in my left hand/arm and take the trigger

nger on my right hand, nd the bend of the hook and push inthe hook rmly with trigger nger while at the same time usethumb to push in the bottom (tie area). Most of the time, it willpop out. I have had the personal satisfaction of saving lots of bass

with hooks deep in the throat.Use a needle nose pliers ONLY as a last resort. I have followed

many anglers down a bank nding several dead or dying bass onthe surface. Also, when you unhook a bass, ease it back in the wa-ter instead of tossing it. We can all do a better job in taking care ofour shery. Like most shing techniques, showing (hands on) is alot easier than trying to put it in print. Hopefully, this will help toget your interest up if you have never tried Wacky. For a hands ontrip (with water) give me a shout. Until then, God Bless and spendlots of time with friends and family.....some of it on the water!

The windy conditions on February 27, 2011 presentedthe anglers participating in the Bud Light Premier Tourat Umphrey Pavilion in Sam Rayburn, Texas with a chal-lenge. Anglers participating in the event, were howeverthankful for the warm weather and shining sun. The toursponsor, Bryan Davis, said, Our goal was about 100 boats, but the weather forecast caused a lot of them to cancel. He said that they were expecting a tournament of atleast 80 teams on Sunday, however due to the excessively

changing weather forecast all but 55 teams pulled them-selves from the tournament. Davis said, They have to shfour out of ve of the tournaments to qualify for the statechampionship.

The top prize of $5,400.00 went to the team of GlenFreeman and Jeff Rice with ve sh at 26.35lbs. Theteam said that they were using a new bait called an OuzoChunky Monkey and shed the south end of the lake inthe edges of loft ledges. Freeman and Rice also commentedthat they had caught about 14-15 bass throughout the day and had their limit of ve bass by 9:00 a.m. They are spon-sored by: Seagur Line, Yum, Ouzo Baits, Nichols Marine,Ranger Boats, Yamaha Motors, Shirmano and LawrenceElectronic.

Have you ever had something go wrong on your boat that youknew you could have prevented? Im going to tell you all about 3little things you can do to your boat to save you lots of headache.

    Trolling Motor

First off, check your screws and bolts. As a sherman onToledo Bend and Sam Rayburn I tend to forget it myself, butthis could save you lots of money. I have a checklist of whatto tighten and its worked out well for me so far. Tighten yourtrolling motor screws and bolts. Its fairly easy and you only needa few tools to complete this task, like a Philips head screwdriverand a wrench. Something to help keep your trolling motor downin extreme conditions is to add an additional strap to it or a tightbungee cord. This will help keep your trolling motor in placewhen in adverse conditions.

    Power Poles

Next I check my bolts on my Power Poles. These tend to loosenfrom driving down the lake in rough conditions or just yournormal wear and tear. You can normally tell if your Power Polesare loose by going up behind them and pushing the actual poleback to your boat. If you feel movement you need to tightenthem. All you need are two wrenches, one to hold back up to oneside of the bolt and the other to tighten the bolt. Make sure tonot tighten them too much. One last thing, make sure to keep 2bungee cords or small pieces of rope in your boat to tie up your

Power Poles just in case a pump goes out or your uid begins toleak. Power poles are the newest craze on the market. These arethe big hydraulic Sticks sticking out on the back of quite a few

    shermens boats.

MotorLastly I check my bolts on my motor. This is a part of your boat

that you use the least but is probably one of the most importantpieces on your boat. First I check to see if my bolts are tightened fro

my jackplate to my transom. These have a tendency to loosen whenin extreme rough water or adverse boating conditions. The last thingyou need is to be driving down the lake in an extremely importanttournament and your motor break the bolts off.Dont just look atthe bolts and think they are tight.Put a wrench on the bolt and thenut to back them up. You will be surprised how loose they actuallyare. Next, check the bolts connected from the jackplate to the motorThese bolts are the ones most likely to give you the biggest problemI have seen instances where I could go tighten someones bolts, which connect from the jackplate to the motor, just with my hands. This is the spot that is more likely to break the fastest in rough water

conditions. One of the scariest feelings you will ever have is if you stranded in the middle of the lake with 6 to 8 footers.

To conclude Preventive Boat Maintenance, there are manythings you can do other than what I listed. Please do someresearch or feel free to contact me and Ill be more than happyto help you. My phone number is (936) 414-2365 or email me [email protected]. Thanks for reading my article anduntil next time keep on catching them, but please practice catchand release!!

Iles & Shook do it again at Bass N Bucks on Toledo Bend

It is nally feeling like spring in the south, and nearly 330 anglers enjoyed being out in it onToledo Bend February 26, 2011 as Bass N Bucks kicked off the Toledo series. Fourteen sacks over 20pounds were registered and Big Bass kept getting bigger as 7s, 8s and one over 9 was brought in.Danny Iles and Brian Shook won 1st place and $8,000 with 26.13 pounds.

Toledo Bend is still more than 7 feet low, and everyone continues to pray for rain. Being the 5thlargest man made lake in the south, it didnt hamper the shing. Nearly all participants weighed in,with a host of hefty sacks.

With nearly a dozen sacks over 20 pounds already in the books by the time Shook & Iles came tothe scales with their bag, nearly all eyes were on them when their weight locked in to take over the

lead in an ongoing weigh in. Martin Elshout and Mark Price had been at the top of the leaderboarduntil that time with 23.34 lbs. Before the scales locked down, Rusty Hatcher and Chad Loupe made agood run for top spot ending up in 2nd with 24.44 lbs

Locating sh and following their patterns is an acquired skill this team seems to have mastered. The bass seem to be moving day to day, Iles stated. We decided to sh the south end, focusing onhydrilla in 2-6. They were using a custom painted Red Eye Shad by 6th Sense Lures along with awhite double willow bladed spinnerbait all day.The bite was pretty slow, but steady all day. We hada limit in the boat by around 10:00, and only culled a couple of times. A six pounder anchored theircreel that totaled 26.13 lbs. Being among the youngest participating, even many of the more seasonedteams tipped their hats at yet another win for these young men. Bass N Bucks presented them with theguaranteed 1st place purse of $8,000. The team would like to thank Ranger, Mercury, Power Tackle,

Costa Del Mar, Needmore Tackle, 6th Sense Lures, Jordans Marine, Sebile and Falcon Lures. Wed alsolike to point out that the Power Tackle composite crank bait rod is one of the best out there. The shjust dont come off!

Danny also won the $2,500 from Ranger Cup and the $250 Cabelas bonuses.Rusty Hatcher and Chad Loupe won 2nd place and $4,000 with their 24.44 lb sack. Hitting shallow

stumps with a big Texas rigged worm, the early bite was good for them and they just kept catching allday long. We had a limit in the boat by 9:30 and culled until noon. After that it got slow, and we hada long run to make getting back so we packed it in.

Martin Elshout & Mark Price had areas picked on the north and south ends of the lake. We startedon the south end, using Rat-L-Traps and football head jigs. They caught a few, but said when thebite died they headed north. Going into a pocket lled with stumps, they threw Texas rigged lizardsin shallow water. We nished a limit and culled three times there. The sh were biting good all day.

The team won $3,000 for 3rd place and would like to thank Ranger, Mercury, Kistler Rods and L

Brothers Marine.James Blythe caught the Big Bass of the day, shing with partner Brad Hughes. According to

James just got lucky. All kidding aside, James was working a black & blue Texas rigged senkoa 1/8 oz weight in 10 of water. The sh were suspended about 3 from the surface. I needed a falling bait. It was around 10:30 when she hit, but at rst I thought it was a lot smaller. Once shbroke the water, they realized they had a sow. The bass weighed 9.20 lbs, adding $1,000 to the toverall winnings.Wed like to thank Matt Mathews who was also shing the same area for givithe elbow room to sh there.

The top sacks were incremental to say the least, some only separated by 1/100th of a pound. WToledo Bend is still over 7 feet low, the shing (and catching) is outstanding.

BrianShook andDannyIles wonthe Bass N BucksToledoSeries kick-off with over 26 pounds!

Rusty Hatcher & Brian Loupe had a nice sack of nearly cookiecutters totaling 24.44 lbs to win 2nd place

Holding the lead for a short while, Mark Price & Martin Elshoutultimately won 3rd place with their 23.34 lb limit

There are few things in life more complicated than shing duringa weekend.Your adrenalin has been running high all week at work asyou anticipate the upcoming shing trip and your thoughts are of bigbass and lots of them. But more often than not that beautiful weatheryou anticipated is overshadowed by a cold front, long lines at the

launching ramp and sh that suddenly get a case of lockjaw. So whatsa weekend sherman to do?First of all lets establish the fact that most anglers sh when they

can. When you head to the lake for a weekend outing, concentrate onthe positives rather than the negatives. You may not be as skilled as thepro sherman but there are things you can do to sway the odds overin your favor. An occasional trip to different lakes is ne..However if your goal is to improve your success ratio I suggest that you zero-in onone or two lakes and learn them well. Here are some tips to help youaccomplish your goals.

    #1 Be Versatile -

Someonemuchwiserthan meoncesaid,Insanity is doing thingsthatdontworkover andover again butexpectingdifferent results.Forbass shingthismeans that whenthe shingis slow youneed tokeepanopenmindand beready tochange your tactics.Dont get caughtup inthebadhabitof usingone shingtechniqueand then making upexcusesifyoudontcatch sh.Oddsare that thebassare thereand inmanycasesthey will bite ...butit just takes theright presentationto makeit happen.Mostweekend anglers followeachotherdowna shorelinecastingthesame baitsas theboat they arefollowingand just hope toget lucky. Ifthehits arenot comingfromshallowwater godeepand vice versa. If thatfavoritespinnerbaitor topwateris notproducingtry a crankbait or soft

plastic. The pointis tonot getintoa rutwithyour shing.#2 Bait Selection -If you master a basic selection of baits you will de nitely be more

successful. Most of us have MANY tackleboxes crammed full of lures

(some of which never get used); however, learning to properly use a few baits correctly can certainly go a long way in building your con denceand putting more weight in your weigh-in bag. I know that in my early

shing days I wanted to master jig shing and an ol pro told me to goshing with nothing in the boat but jigs. It was good advice.Discipline

yourself to use speci c baits until you are comfortable and then expandto other baits and techniques.#3 What are you after Numbers or Size? -Are you trying to catch lots of bass or trophy bass? The techniques

to do one or the other can often vary greatly. The trophy hunter tendsto use larger baits and may have to go long periods of time betweenbites, however, when the bite occurs it could be the sh of a lifetime. The angler that wants to just catch a bunch of bass may have to look forschooliesand downsize the baits he is using to better attract thesmaller sh.

    #4 Where to Fish -

The rst priority is to get a good topographical map of the lake youintend to sh and study it carefully.Look for those areas that havesharp drop-offs, long tapering points and creek channels that meanderthrough wooded areas.Look for areas that offer sh easy access to bothshallow and deep water. Look for abrupt changes in the topography.A good topographical map can help you nd sh before you even launchyour boat. Its also a good idea to put together a game plan regardingwhat you want to do before you hit the water. The plan will obviously have to be ne-tunedonce you launch your boat, but it will give youa starting point and keep you from wondering aimlessly around castingat random spots like many weekend anglers do.

#5 Underwater Eyes Invest in a good depth nder and learn how to use it. Spend some

time understanding the unit and the various settings. Forget aboutshing on your rst couple of trips - this is the time for learning. You

might even nd a couple of great looking shing spots that are noteven on your lake map.I have to admit that when I got my rst graph ran into a couple of trees because I concentrated so much on studyingwhat was on my screen that I lost track of where I was going.Goodelectronics is only as good as your ability to understand what you are

seeing so sharpen your skills.#6 Ignore Other Fishermen -I have shed with a number of anglers that would actually get

depressed and lose their focus for shing if another angler was shingtheir area.Forget the other anglers and just sh the plan you puttogether. If someone is shing your spot simply adjust your shing byworking different baits, techniques and depths..or leave and sh thearea later.

Here is something for you to think about. There are various stagesin the life of a bass sherman that all of us go through. Usually a newangler just wants to catch one bass. The next stage is wanting to catch

a bunch of bass. Then comes the need to catch one big bass. Thenthe angler wants to catch a bunch of bigger bass. Then you reach thepoint where you want to catch a REALLY big bass, the sh of a lifetimAnd keep in mind that it never really ends because once you catch that10-pounder you will want to catch one even bigger. Thats what makes

shing lots of fun and so challenging. So there you are...A few suggestions for 2011 that will hopefully

allow you to get more sh in the livewell. Just remember, shing can bas enjoyable or as stressful as you want to make it. I suggest that yourelax and enjoy your time on the water. And keep in mind that a day othe water is sure better than working that honey-dolist your wife ha

Rat-L-Trap holds 1st Annual specialty tournament on Sam Rayburn

    By Patty Lenderman / Lakecaster

It all started nearly half a century ago when Sam Rayburn andToledo Bend were still in their infancy. A man named Bill Lewisloved to sh, and loved to tinker too. In his garage, he createdmany different lures trying to emulate bait sh and sink and swimthe way he thought they needed to. As in any creative process, somewere good and some never made it out of the garage.

Some of his friends would stop by to see what the latest thingshe had created looked like. Among the creations lying around wasone he had stuck some lead shot in. His friend picked one up andheaded out to Toledo Bend.

Later, Bill also went out to do some shing. He noticed about80 boats bunched up together, and one out all by itself. Curious,he got closer to see what was going on. They were watching as theangler in the distance caught bass after bass. Even more curious,he approached the lone boater only to see it was his friend. John what are you using? His friend told him Bill, its that uglyrattling bait on your bench do you have any more? Bill saidno to keep the other boaters from overtaking him. He did indeedhave a few on him but had never thrown them himself, so got off to another area and tried one. He started catching sh right away,

and was amazed at how loud the bait sounded coming through thewater as he shed from his aluminum boat.As he was driving home in his station wagon, a rather noisy car

he lovingly named the Rattle Trap, he tried to gure out what hewould call this new lure. The sound of that bait sure reminds meof my car, he thought. At that moment, the Rat-L-Trap was born.

Now,nearly 50 years and hundreds of lures and colors later,BillLewis Lures hosted the 1st Annual Rat-L-Trap big bass tournament onSam Rayburn March 5, 2011.While anglers in these parts are quitefamiliar with big bass tournaments, this one had a little twist to it.

We wanted to see who could show the most skill using Rat-

L-Traps, while also awarding any lucky anglers too, stated WesHiggins, President of Bill Lewis Lures. We awarded the top 10individual big bass every hour from 7am until 2pm. Then, between2pm-3pm the biggest stringer got the guaranteed 1st place overallpaycheck of $10,000.

The scales of cially opened at 7am. Mike Fullerton topped thehour with his 7.80 lb catch winning a $500 check.

In tournaments such as this, it is integral to keep a line of com-munication between the weigh in site and the anglers. KICKS 105was on hand keeping everyone informed as to what had weighed

Dicky Newberry was the bigwinner in the 1st AnnualRat-L-Trap tournament, having 26.44 lbs in a 5 basslimit to win over $11,000

Paul Proctor weighed inthe biggest bass of the dayduring the 8-9:00 hourfor a $500 check. This

sh helped anchor his2nd place overall ve shstringer for an additional$2,500. He used a chromeRat-L-Trap for his catch.

Proctor caught an 8.83 lb sow, winning $500 and putting a nicepiece to his ve sh stringer. A lot of money was left on the tablethis hour, as only 4 sh were brought to the scales.

It was a gorgeous day and just kept getting better as the morn-ing rolled on quite different from the day before with horren-dous winds, rain, and wind chill temps in the 30s. During the9-10:00 hour, no money was left behind.

With only 3 hours left to weigh in individual bass, the 10-11:00hour lled up.

gg p pparea tackle shops: Anns Tackle, Needmore Tackle and The TackleMonkey. Displays of several new colors for this season was set upand made available to anxious anglers.

Weights stacked up tight for the 11-12:00 hour.

Temperatures continued to rise, as did the overall weights.12:00-1:00 hour results:

Each sh the contestants weigh until 2:00 counts toward the 5sh total they are allowed.1:00-2:00 hour results:

No more single bass to be weighed. Each contestant who hadalready weighed any during the day could only bring in the re-mainder of a ve sh limit to add to their established weights. Anywho had not already weighed could bring in an entire limit to tryto get their chance to win one of top three overall stringer checks, including the $10,000 check for 1st place!

Dicky Newberry had weighed in two sh in the hours before,a 6.84 and 5.78 and had stated the last time he was at the scalesthat he had plenty more. Bringing in three more to weigh at 13.82lbs, his ve sh total went to 26.44 lbs ultimately winning theevent. I used a copper bleeding craw color today, he divulged. Hiswinnings totaled $11,150 which also included a $250 bonus forwearing Rat-L-Trap attire during the bonus hour with the biggest

sh of that hour.Paul Proctor had won the 8-9:00 hour with his 8.83 lb sow, and

additionally came in 2nd place with his 19.49 lb stringer.Ted ODell won 3rd place with 18.37 lbs, anchored by a 5.95 lb

bass that also won 2nd in the 12-1:00 hour.Wed like to thank all of you for coming out and shing with

us, announced Wes Higgins. When we were rst putting thegroundwork for this tournament together and trying to decide

where to have it, it was obvious immediately. Sam Rayburn is oneof the best Rat-L-Trap lakes in the country. Plans are already be-ing made to make this an annual event, growing bigger each year.

Mitchell & Bonds take home check at V & M/Cyclone Tournament

    By Jodie Warner/Staff Writer

Saturday March 12 presented anglers with a much better weather forecast and warmer day. Theonly drawback per the anglers was the continuous wind. This particular weekend hosted severaltournaments in the same areas, making a busy weekend for anglers.

Don & Sandy Jeane WIN C.A.S. .at Toledo Bend!!!

    By John & Grace Watts

After being absent from the schedule since 2009 C.A.S.T.Southeasts region return to Toledo Bend was a welcome one! Theweather was perfect for catching bass on the stump laden reservoir.Toledo Bends dam had been under repair for sometime resultingin extremely low lake levels. Some anglers didnt know there werethat many stumps on the lake! The boat lane markers were almostunnecessary as the lane edges were clearly outlined by the treesstumps sticking up almost 3 feet from the waters surface.

With low lake levels, this brings smaller shing areas. Many lo-cal tournaments were on the lake Saturday, March 12th, includingquite a few FLW Touring Pros practicing for their upcoming event. The real story was in how well the sh were biting. Many C.A.S.T.

couples caught sh but the huge bags did not materialize. Withthe top three positions all within .08 of a pound the story is Toledos big basshave not moved up yet!

Don & Sandy Jeane weighed the bestbag of the day at 16.56 lbs. to claim 1stplace. The bite was fast and furious forDon & Sandy; they had a limit in lessthan 30 minutes into the tournament.Sandy caught the rst good sh of their day on a crankbait. Don netted

it for her and in the process tangledhis crankbait in the net! So like anygood partner, Sandy put two more

sh in the boat before he could get it

untangled! You go Girl!!! Don & Sandys stringer was typical forthe day it just needed one good kicker.

Patience is one of the greatest qualities an angler can possess.Craig & Elizabeth

March are truly patient as proved by their 2nd place nish.Their weight of 16.51 lbs. left them only .05 lb. from a win! Work-ing a small creek mouth area for the entire day, Craig & Elizabethmanaged ve solid keepers; while many other boats ran aroundimpatiently looking for a bite.

Johnie & Crystal Fountain came in 3rd place. Their weight of 16.48 lbs. was anchored by the tournaments Big Bass. Crystal hasa air for the dramatic when it comes to catching big bass and

today was no exception. Johnie & Crystal found just the sh they

needed with only a few minutes before time to leave for weigh-in.Crystal caught a really nice 7.02 lb bass! The next largest bass forthe day weighed almost two pounds less than their big bass. Sweet!

With the weather and water warming, the next SoutheastRegion tournament on Lake Conroe, Saturday, April 2nd fromStow-A-Way Marina; should see some huge stringers brought tothe scales by C.A.S.T. couples! Well see you at 5 am tournamentmorning for registration.

Until Later... God Bless and Good Fishin!John & Grace
