Welcome from Pastor Lilia

Today we celebrate the 125th Founding

Anniversary of Lake Chelan United Methodist

Church. Through the years the church has

grown and changed. But one thing is still the

same: “to stay true in our call and remain

faithful in ministering to the needs of church

members and the whole community as well.

Forever this will be our mission and focus, and

we cannot wait to see what God can and will

do in the next 125 years!

To all of you who came and joined us, accept

our deepest gratitude as we say, “Welcome to

Lake Chelan United Methodist Church.”

Your Fellow Servant in Christ,

Pastor Lilia

Lake Chelan United Methodist Church

One hundred twenty five years ago that this church started out

With a little band of Methodists true and devout.

The hard work and devotion of our pioneer people

Built a one-room church with bell and steeple.

T’was no easy task in that early day,

But a group of souls with lofty goals always finds a way.

Adapted from a poem by Thelma Utterback Conklin in the 75th Anniversary program which has been adapted for the 85th and 100th Anniversaries as well.

From the 80th Anniversary By Eva Anderson

We look back with a bit of nostalgia but with great faith. With God’s help we launch out into the future with its tremendous challenges. All too soon, Today becomes yesterday. Hopefully

we will retrospect in the land of tomorrows.

From the 100th Anniversary By Vic Draggoo

The past 100 years have been a time of great accomplishment by members of the LCUMC. Untold hours and large sums of money have been spent in the many, many activities performed within the guidelines of the UMC Discipline. Not to be overlooked or forgotten, however, is the Christian outreach local Methodists perform in the secular realm. Their time, talents, and leadership extended into State, County, District and City elective offices. Participation by our members and constituents in volunteer activities, fraternal, and civic organizations makes an almost endless list of names and activities. I would be next to impossible to list all of them. Suffice to say that our community is a better place to live—thanks to those who gave of themselves to bring to the secular world the Christian principles we share as Methodists.

LCUMC History One hundred and twenty five years ago on March 29,1891, a group of 15 pioneers dreamed of building a Methodist church in the small and remote town of Chelan, WA. The Methodist-Episcopal Superintendent, Rev. G.M. Booth joined Rev. L.M. Hayworth from Waterville to charter these 15 visionaries: the C.L. Fosters, H.A. Grahams, D.L. Switzers, W.S. McPherrons, Mrs.May Pershall, Mrs. Rose Jacobs, Mrs. Ellen Farley, Mrs. Nancy Darnell, Miss Ellen Utterback, Alvin Woodin, and Louis Dart. Pastor Hayworth led services on Sunday afternoons in the school house. In the next five years the women raised funds hosting social events for the community. The men cut trees, sawed boards and began building. Margaret Blakely donated $250 and the H.A. Grahams donated two lots in the center of Chelan. A beautiful little church with a steeple was dedicated in August of 1897 as the Margaret Blakely Memorial Methodist-Episcopal Church. By 1913 the Chelan church added on for more space and expanded their ministry to Manson. The Rev. C.C. Curry started a Sunday School in Manson that resulted in the formal chartering of the Manson Methodist church in 1915. Chelan and Manson continued to share their pastor until 1934 when the Rev J.H. Hill became Manson's first resident pastor. After the end of World War II, the apple industry in Chelan continued to prosper, tourism gained in popularity and the construction of hydro-electric dams on the Columbia river brought new families to North Central Washington. The church needed to respond to this growth. In 1952 a building campaign began for the construction of a new sanctuary on the west end of the church. The warm and welcoming sanctuary that we now enjoy was dedicated in 1959. The final building phase, completed in 1976, included the renovation of the original building into a social hall, a modern kitchen and an educational wing across the back.

The Lake Chelan United Methodist Church is at the center of the city and the heart of the community. Worship services have been held here for 125 years, along with weddings, funerals, study groups, music recitals, youth groups and Harvest Dinners. It has housed a pre-school, a Migrant Day Care Center, and Cub Scouts. Currently the church is used five days a week by local community groups, is a host for Bach Fest concerts, houses the Chelan Teen Center, hosts the Red Cross blood drives, is a Red Cross Emergency Center and a licensed Community Soup Kitchen. We look back with admiration at the legacy handed down by the many people who have been active in God's work through the Lake Chelan United Methodist Church. Without their faith, dedication, and support we would not be celebrating 125 years. The task before us in this year of 2016 is to carry forward, with great love, our Founder's mission of "Service for the Master."
