Laguna madre

TheLaguna Madreextends well intoMexico, to the mouth of the Ro Soto la Marina in the state ofTamaulipas.[1]It is separated from the Gulf of Mexico on the east by a number of barrier islands, including Barra Los Americanos, Barra Jess Mara, and Barra Soto la Marina, and is bounded on the west by mainland Tamaulipas. It is located in the municipalities ofMatamoros,San Fernando, andSoto la Marina.

Characteristics

Thelagoonis connected to the ocean by only two narrow inlets, so thetidalrange which is already minor in this part of the Gulf of Mexico.

OceanographicallyThe Laguna Madre is considered ahypersaline lagoon; this indicates that it is usually muchsaltierthan theocean, due to being nearly landlocked in asemiaridenvironment[5]This is because its salinity can vary wildly depending on rainfall

EcologyLaguna Madre is one of the most important bird wintering habitats in Mexico.[7]Thanks to lobbying and studies done by organizations such asPronatura Noreste, universities, local governments, and other organizations, with the aid of local communities, in April 2005 the Mexican government declared Laguna Madre and theRo Bravos Delta a Natural Protected Area.

Falcn International Reservoir

Falcon International Reservoir(Spanish:Embalse Internacional Falcn), commonly calledFalcon Lake, is areservoiron theRio Grande40 miles (64km) southeast ofLaredo,Texas,United States, andNuevo Laredo,Tamaulipas,Mexico. The huge lake is bounded byStarrandZapatacounties on the Texas side of the international border and the municipality and city ofNueva Ciudad Guerreroon the Tamaulipas side of the border. The reservoir was formed by the construction of theFalcon Damto provide water conservation,irrigation,floodcontrol, andhydroelectricityto the area.The dam was dedicated in October 1953 by Mexican PresidentAdolfo Ruiz CortinesandU.S. PresidentDwight D. Eisenhower. The dam and lake are managed jointly by governments of the United States and Mexico through theInternational Boundary and Water Commission, which was established in 1889 to maintain the border, allocate river waters between the two nations, and provide for flood control and water sanitation. The lake is named after Mara Rita de la Garza Falcn, for whom the town of Falcon (displaced by the creation of the reservoir) was named.

Fish and plant lifeFalcon International Reservoir has been stocked with species of fish intended to improve the utility of the reservoir for recreational fishing. Fish present in the reservoir includelargemouth bass,crappie,catfish, andchannel catfish.On the shores of Falcon Lake are Texas Wild Olive (Cordia boissieri), Mexican Oregano (Lippia graveolens),hibiscus,mesquitethickets, Huisache (Vachellia farnesianavar.farnesiana) and prickly pear cactus (Opuntiaspp.).Greater Roadrunners,Collared Peccaries,White-tailed deerandBlack-tailed Jackrabbitsalso exist within the park

RecreationFalcon State Park is 572.6 acres (2.317km2) located betweenFalcon Heights, Texas, andNueva Ciudad Guerrero,Tamaulipas, and is the southern end of a 98,960-acre (400.5km2) International Falcon Reservoir. The park's main activities include camping, swimming, fishing, water skiing, and boating and a self-guided nature trail.Bass fishingis particularly popular on the 98,960-acre (400.5km2) lake.
