FROM THE WATER TO THE SKY

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Lago Martiánez is one of the most wonderful natural attractions on all of Tenerife. It’s a delightful swimming pool complex consisting of cascading waterfalls and dozens of large lakes filled in natural saltwater. There are waterfalls and caves to swim through and a giant fountain spurting water out to an incredible height and into a huge swimming area. The water is conditioned, filled from the ocean (which is just over the wall). It is extremely clean, and sunbeds and sunshades can be hired for a little extra cost.

If you come any day of the week between 10 and 11 o’clock in the morning you can see the fountains, how they spray sea water in the pools.

with the use of traditional colours in their exterior decoration. Some of his creations in Lanzarote are Mirador del Rio, Jameos del Agua and many others and outside the island are Lago Martianez, Mirador del Palmarejo, Playa Jardin and others. Manrique died in a car accident at Tahiche, Teguise, very near the Fundación, his Lanzarote home, in 1992. He was aged 73.

THE FAMOUS LANZAROTE ARTIST, designed this outstanding work that is so well adapted to the traditional Canary Islands architectural style, complemented with naative vegetation and original sculptures. The artificial lake contains sea water, highlights the pools, all of which are otiginally and beautifully laid out. The Casino Taoro, a long standing institution in Puerto de la Cruz, has been located in the lake since 2006. The leisure options are completed with a wide variety of bars, restaurants, stalls and other services, making it one of the most striking and popular leisure centres of Tenerife.

Artist and architect. César Manrique was born in Arrecife, Lanzarote. He fought in the Spanish

Civil War as a volunteer in the artillery unit on Franco’s side. He attended the University of La Laguna to study architecture, but after two years he quit his studies. He

moved to Madrid in 1945 and received a scholarship for the Art School of San Fernando, where he graduated as a teacher of art and painting. Manrique had a major influence on the planning regulations in Lanzarote, when he recognised its tourist potential and lobbied successfully to encourage sympathetic development of tourism. One aspect of this is the lack of high rise hotels on the island. Those that are there are in keeping

Lago Martiánez is a leisure complex, situated in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Canary Islands. It’s a complex that expands over 100 000 m2, consisting of an artificial lake with six pools surrounding it.

The pools are surrounded by gardens, restaurants, bars and many other fascilities. By its unique design the complex offers a view of local features such as various booths, palisades and views of the sea. Apart from the architectural work, the complex hosts a series of sculptures created by César Manrique. There are three pools that make the Los Alisios,

one of which is the deepest in the complex with a dept of around 2 meters. All of the other pools have a depth anywhere from 1.20m to 1.90m, patrolling the pool sides are 3 to 5 lifeguards (depending on the season). The average temperature of the water in the pools is 20-24 degrees. The Lake, as it’s known by the local people, was built on an area of natural pools, which were called The Colonel and The Saga and they have been around since before The

Lago was built. Now it’s called Llanos de Martiánez and it has been used for a bathing place of the first tourists in the late 19th and early 20th century. El Lago is an artificial lake, it covers an area of 33 000 m² (fully reclaimed from the ocean), 15 000 m² of which are made up of water. From 2004 to 2006 the complex underwent some major reforms and improvements like the changing of the lights in the pools and around the walkways.

There are a total of 3 restaurants and 9 bars where you can buy drinks or just have a nice relaxing meal by the pool side. The restaurants’ opening times are from 10am to 6pm, however, in case of parties and other events, these may be extended until later in the evening. The bars are very different from one another, which helps shape the unique experience of visiting the complex. There are two

ice cream stands, one buffet bar, one tapas (traditional Spanish meal) bar, two snack bars and three cocktail bars. All of the sites are able to provide world class service and help to enhance the time spend in Lago Martiánez.

A prestigious team, led by the famous artist César Manrique, carried out this work that blends with the traditional Canary Islands’ architecture and fauna with native flowers and sculptures. The Taoro Casino, a long standing

institucion in Puerto de la Cruz, has been located in Lago Martiánez since 2006. Before that the casino was situated in the Parque Taoro.

Today, Lago Martiánez is the only place in the world to have a casino below sea level. Casino Taoro is near a range of bars and restaurants that give the resort a special vitality and make it one of the most striking centers of the

island. The Casino has two lobbies dedicated to machine gambling (11:00-02:00) and table games (20:00-04:00). In the second lobby there are games such as American roulette, Blackjack and Texas Hold’em poker etc.

The Casino’s work schedule is from 11am to 4am.

We continue along the left pathway and before us, a lot of leisure sites and restaurants reveal themselves. At the end of the pathway lies the deepest pool in the complex and in the background we see a magnificent waterfall which is filling the pool with ocean water.

From there we turn in the direction of the next pools and we reach to a set of three pools named “Los Alisios”. These are some of the oldest pools in the complex with a depth of 1.20 to 1.85. We continue through the bridge over the second pool, then pass by the island bar - El Barco Cocktail Bar and we come out near the third pool of the Los Alisios.

There before our eyes appears a kiosk shop named Martiánez Shopping. Next to the shop is the place where they store all of the cushions and umbrellas. Further down the path we reach the fifth pool of the complex, where we can find the children play site La Jibia. The same pool is also known as the children’s one.

WALKVIRTUAL Starting from the entrance of the complex, the first thing we see is a small square with a small, but beautiful fountain. On the right we have the women’s changing rooms and bathrooms and also the infirmary. Located on the left are the men’s changing rooms and bathrooms, three restaurants, a spa centre and a Jacuzzi. On this side we have two of the three pools that make the Los Alisios, one of which is the deepest in the complex with a depth of around 2 meters. All of the other pools have a depth anywhere from 1.20 to 1.90, patrolling the pool sides are 3 to 5 lifeguards (depending on the season). In front of the entrance you can see two of the pools.

Further down the path, we see two further sites - The Geizer and the last of the seven pools of the complex with the Monomento al Mar in its centre. This is the second of the two pools for children. There we can find the snack bar Kiosko II . Later we reach one of the restaurants of the site; Restaurante Lago.

The floor is studded with small pebbles which makes it pleasant to walk on, especially when it is hot. Be aware that you are not allowed to take any food and drinks inside the complex.

If we go right from there we can find some great resting spots. There we can find the ice cream shop Barlovento and the snack bar Kiosko I. We continue ahead and we reach the biggest pool in the complex - Lago Martiánez. In front of us we see the biggest fountain on the site Crater de agua.

From there we start walking to the left and we reach the snack bar Maresia. Next to the bar we can see Raices al Vienta, which are sculptures of upside down trees.

As we continue the walk around the pool we notice a lot of places from where we can either watch the ocean or

sunbathe.

The huge w a t e r f o u n t a i n seems to be switched off from mid afternoon but it is definitely worth going whilst it is still in full flow.

We walk over the bridge and we reach the island in the centre of the complex where we can find one of the restaurants and the entrance to the underground casino. Heading back, we reach the Barloventa, a sculpture of a tree

with some wind cocks on the top.

We go forward and we reach the tapas bar Lago. From there we go through the main exit of the complex. Lago Martiánez is a great place to spend one wonderful day in Puerto de la Cruz, costing only 5,50€ per adult and 3,5€ per child under the age of 12. ENJOY YOUR STAY!
