President’s Column

It’s December and the end of our LGS Fall season. Amazing how time flies when you’re having fun, or when you are simply very busy. I’m not sure about you, but Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holi-days. It’s the only day you can out-eat yourself and then spend the rest of the day relishing in your own gluttony while watching football. It’s also a day to look back on the year and be thankful for all that we have. What a great holiday! Now that Thanksgiving is behind us Christmas is knocking on our door and the end of the year is approaching fast. I am sure everyone is trying to finish up year-end projects while trying to get some Christ-mas shopping in and still find time for hunting or golf. With all of this going on, let us not forget that this time of year should be about being with family and friends and helping the less fortunate. Speaking of spending time with family and friends, don’t forget about our annual Christmas Social. It will be on Thursday, December 17 (the evening after our monthly meeting), at 5:30 pm at the Petro-leum Club. We will have live entertainment and great food and are hoping for a good turnout from members and spouses. The tickets are $15/person and can be purchased at the door. At our next meeting, Don Owen and Richard Ashmore from Lamar University will talk about the effects of recent hurricanes on our coast-line. This should be a very interesting and relevant presentation and I hope the turnout will be good despite the proximity to Christmas. The bad news is that I will not be able to attend myself as I will be at the Fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, with over 16,000 scientists expected from around the world, probably the biggest meeting in the Earth Sciences. In closing, I would like to thank Prize Petroleum and King Munson for sponsoring this month’s student lunches. It is much appreciated. Happy Holidays! Carl Richter

AAPG’s Globalization Plans under Discus-sion—What might be Involved?

The AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) continues to expand its global reach, with international Regions (e.g. Africa Region, Europe Region, etc.) currently regarded as units roughly on a par with domestic Sections (e.g. Gulf Coast Section, otherwise known as the Gulf Coast Association of Geo-logical Societies, or GCAGS). The AAPG is debating major changes to the Constitution and By-Laws to reflect the growing importance of its global nature. Some of the changes to the Cor-porate Structure which might or might not make their way into the amendments that will come before the membership for ap-proval are potentially controversial. Two possible changes which might be proposed that would engender debate are firstly to consider the domestic sections as making up a single Region comparable with the other interna-tional Regions, diluting the role of U.S. membership. The very name of the organization might also be under review, since the Association is no longer purely American. We urge all AAPG members to go to the Association’s web site at http://discussion.aapg.org/corporatestructure/ and read the information currently available. Express your views to the local Delegates who represent each local society with AAPG. Note that no detailed proposal has yet been finalized, so this is the time for membership input.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Geological Society

60th Annual Convention

October 10-12, 2010 San Antonio, Texas

Hosted by the South Texas Geological Society

Welcome back to San Antonio! Our theme this year is Weather-ing the Cycles”—a challenge that resource geologists certainly have faced and overcome in the past! How do we weather the economic cycles? We… • Network with our community • Experience the latest technology in the technical exhibition • Take a course or a trip and grow new and diverse skills • Listen to special presentations on strategies to endure and

prosper during an economic downtime and prepare for the inevitable rebound.

By celebrating our successes, facing our challenges, and learn-ing from the research results of our peers, we are paid back many fold by sharing ideas and experiences among our profes-sional community. So come and share your experiences! Sug-gest a session topic, present an oral paper or a poster, learn about the latest ideas and technologies in our field. Come to San Antonio and enjoy the Gulf’s own geoscience convention!

Please visit www.gcags2010.com for information on proposed technical sessions and how to submit an abstract.

Abstract deadline: 01 February 2010

LGS Editor checks off another world landmark, this time Mt. Fuji in Japan. Intermediate hills are collapse rim highlands of a caldera, of which a later land-

slide dammed a river forming the lake. Not everything is expensive—we stayed in this 19th century resort near Mt. Fuji for only $131 a night. Later

back in Tokyo got to enjoy (not really) a moderate earthquake. Have your own photos? Please feel free to send to [email protected].
