I’m not necessarily one that sets a New Year’s Goal…but I do set new school year goals every September. At the start of each school year, we review and reflect on our prior year data, look toward where we need to learn and grow, and identify goals for each school year. With the start of a New Year, this seems like a perfect time to reflect on our School’s Vision and Goals for our students and community for 2018-2019. Our Lacamas vision statement is Investing Together; Inspiring Today; Impacting Tomorrow. Big dreams for our little community…but that’s what we’re doing. We are committed to investing together as a staff and school community to meet each students’ needs and ensure their growth. Our building Theory of Action focuses on Relationships and Interventions. Research supports that relationships are an essential foundation for learning. In fact, John Hattie, an educational researcher, identified that the student-teacher relationship has a strong effect for students’ achievement! “Strong teacher student relationships shape the way children think and act in school. When you have a good relationship with your students, they are more likely to feel positive about class and about school in general. They are also more willing to have a go at hard work, to risk making mistakes, and to ask for help when they need it. Therefore, it is not surprising that research shows constructive teacher student relationships have a large and positive impact on students’ academic results.” This year we identified reading and social-emotional goals as areas for growth. We are learning and implementing Collaborative Problem Solving, Community Circles and Mindfulness strategies for our students’ social-emotional well-being. This learning supports our goal of building relationships and teaching students strategies to help focus, manage stress, regulate emotions, and develop a positive outlook. Through our Data Team Inquiry Cycle we are planning and implementing small group interventions for students who are not yet demonstrating comparable growth in reading. As we take time Mid-Year to reflect on our Theory of Action Goals, we’re seeing positive student and teacher growth! Looking toward our second half of the school year, I’d love to encourage you to join our vision! How might you personally support your child or kids in our school community? Well, here are a couple ideas! Idea #1: Practice Mindfulness as a family! Mindfulness supports emotional regulation and cognitive focus. It builds self-awareness, acceptance and gives techniques to help calm our thoughts and feelings. Below are a few Mindfulness techniques that you can try as a family! Breathing: Take a moment to pay attention to your breathing. Breathe in as if you’re smelling a flower and exhaling like you’re blowing out a candle. While breathing, count your breaths in and out and relax your body. Gratitude: This is a fundamental component of Mindfulness! While driving in the car, at dinner, before bedtime take a moment to share one thing you’re thankful for. Helping our kids focus on gratitude encourages positive emotions, satisfaction and happiness. Personal Weather: Have your child give their personal weather: Sunny, rainy, stormy, calm, windy…to identify their emotions. We can’t change the weather outside or our emotions and feelings, but we can change how we relate to them! Recognizing is the first step to learning how to respond. Idea #2: Share what you love! This last month, my husband David came in once a week at lunch recess to share his love of drawing. He showed kids how to draw Olaf and Snoopy and kids loved it! I got to thinking, wouldn’t it be great to have others share something that they love to do with our kids? Do you knit, play chess, dance, enjoy basketball, love to read aloud...? Do you have time to share, whether it’s just once or once a week? We would love to build positive connections for kids and provide them with a variety of opportunities to try something new. All that is required is to complete our district volunteer paperwork/ background check and your time. If this sounds like a way that you would enjoy contributing to our kids and community, please let me know! I read a quote stating, “Devote yourself to your community around you and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning” (Mitch Albom). That’s my hope! That we expand how we support our kids and continue to build our Lacamas community. I can’t think of anything more rewarding or meaningful. I look forward to seeing where our vision takes us: Investing Together; Inspiring Today; Impacting Tomorrow. Happy New Year! Julie Mueller

Lacamas is: Respectful, Responsible, Safe and Kind!

Dear Lacamas Families, January 2019

Happy New Year!

Therefore, it is not surprising that research shows constructive teacher student relationships have a large and positive impact on students’ academic results.”

This year we identified reading and social-emotional goals as areas for growth.

• Breathing: Take a moment to pay attention to your breathing. Breathe in as if you’re smelling a flower and exhaling like you’re blowing out a candle. While

breathing, count your breaths in and out and relax your body. • Gratitude: This is a fundamental component of Mindfulness! While driving in the car, at dinner, before bedtime take a moment to share one thing you’re

thankful for. Helping our kids focus on gratitude encourages positive emotions, satisfaction and happiness. • Personal Weather: Have your child give their personal weather: Sunny, rainy, stormy, calm, windy…to identify their emotions. We can’t change the

weather outside or our emotions and feelings, but we can change how we relate to them!

All that is required is to complete our district volunteer paperwork/background check and your time.
