Dear Lacamas Families,
Winter coats, rosy cheeks, cri sp cold air…it is hard to believe it is December and soon a New Year! Besides the change in the weather, the month of December
brings with it events and celebrations for our Lacamas community. Starting with the first week of December, our Leadership students worked hard to coordinate
our “Stuff the Bus” food drive. Classe s collected non-perishable food items the week of December 2nd through the 6th. As a special event to support “Stuff the
Bus”, our Leadership kids organized a “Family Game Night”. This was a huge success bringing in more canned food donations, all while families played their
favorite games, enjoyed hot chocolate, popcorn, and fun family time! Thank you
Mrs. Redmond and our Leadership kids for a great family night!
December also marks the end of our first trimester and reporting period. Report Cards will be sent home December 19th. The elements listed on each grade level report card describe the skil ls and concepts identified
for student mastery by the end of the school year. Our reporting system of 1,2,3, and 4 identifies students’ levels for standards. A “3” indicates meeting the grade level standard. Monitoring your child’s skil l
development, supporting good study habits, and encouraging responsible learning behaviors are positive ways
you can help support.
This is an important time of the year to reflect on your child’s progress and celebrate their successe s. Take time to share with your child their growth and set goals for the next trimester. Here are a few questions you
might ask your child: Are you making time for practice and homework? Are you participating in the 20/20 reading every month? Are you staying organized and completing assignments? Do you seek help when
needed? Do you have good attendance? Are you giving your best effort with your behavior and
responsibilities? We are proud of our Lacamas Leopards and excited to see their continued growth!
As we welcome in the New Year, we are looking forward to hosting our “50th Birthday Celebration” January 17th! We will be having an assembly during the day and a reception that evening for all Lacamas students and
families from 1963 to 2014! We are busy with plans and excited to share fond memories of our school! More
information will be coming home soon!
December and January are some of my favorite months…time for sharing, celebrating, and giving. This is always a busy and exciting season with lots to look forward to: “Stuff the Bus”, Family Game Night, Report
Cards, 50th Birthday Celebration, and other events and activities these month hold for students, families and
Lacamas community.
Best Wishes this Winter Season!

Accelerated Reading Program
Our first Accelerated Reader store will be this month! On Monday, December 16th students who
have earned at least 10 points (5 points for K-1 students) may come into the library during
lunch recess to explore the store. AR points are earned when students take comprehension
tests on books they’ve finished. Not only do students have opportunities to take AR tests at
school, but they may also log in at home to take tests. On the AR website, Parents may view
lists of the books their children are reading and see how well each book is being understood.
In the AR store, which is funded and managed by Lacamas’ PALS group, items may be pur-
chased using the students’ accumulated AR points, or points can be saved and used at the
store later in the year. Students are being encouraged to make wish lists for items they can’t
yet “afford” and set goals to earn them at later stores.
Items for sale this year include, but are not limited to: books, comic books, journals, posters,
games, bookmarks and buttons. Students may also “purchase” experiences offered by our
teachers and staff. Your child may purchase experiences such as job shadowing Mrs. Mueller,
an afternoon at Grass Valley Park with our first grade teachers, an art class with Mrs. Blair, a
mad science class with Mrs. Redmond, lunch with a teacher, and much more!
Students who have earned their first 100 points may come to me in the library at any time for a
free prize of a “Top Reader” hat and a picture on our wall of star readers! The next 100 points
will earn your student a star pin for their hat. Students keep their hat throughout their time at
Lacamas and continue to earn pins. Please encourage your child to continue reading and tak-
ing AR tests so that they can enjoy all that our store has to offer. Happy reading!

CELEBRATING
Lacamas’ Birthday ALL YEAR LONG
Flashback
to
Mark your calendars now, and join us Friday,
January 17 at 5:30 pm in the Lacamas gym to
celebrate Lacamas’ 50th Anniversary. Special
guests will include former teachers and students
from Lacamas’ first years, and potentially a visit
from the school’s first principal. We will premiere
“The Lacamas Story” short film, and have a gallery
of photos from the past 50 years on display. You
can also help us celebrate the winners of our
Birthday Poster Contest. All of our students
participated, and two student submissions from
each class were chosen to be highlighted in the
short film, used on invitations, displayed in the
office, and more. And, of course, no birthday
party would be complete without birthday cake,
so don’t miss out on the fun!

Dear Camas Families:
Winter months bring with them the possibility of inclement weather and poor road conditions. Please find listed below information regarding public broadcasts and notifications. In the event of poor weather conditions, the district’s emergency notification system will call parents at their home number around 5:00 AM to announce late start, snow routes or school closure. Additionally, the district will continue to post the notifications on the district website (www.camas.wednet.edu) and media. Parents are asked to refrain from calling the district office or school as high call volumes tend to shut down the phone system. If no announcement is made, bus routes will run on their regular schedule, but please allow for delays. If a two-hour late start is announced, buses will run regular routes two hours later than the normal schedule, and there will be no AM kindergarten or AM preschool. In the event snow routes are announced, the following would apply: Snow Route Information for students who live on Livingston Mountain and ride the following routes: Bus 70-A, 69-B, Kindergarten Bus B – Those students who catch the bus on NE Livingston Road and NE Hancock Road will board the bus at the Fire District 9 Station located on NE 292nd Avenue.
