Labour shortage was longer working hours with no extra pay. The huge number of

workers required for the armed forces brought a problem of shortage of workers in work

places. Government had a system of dilution:

Replaced skill workers with unskilled or semi-skilled

workers including old man.This only would last as long as

war.Laws would be put in place to stop people making profits out

of War.

There was munition shortage. Labour shortage + longer working hours brought increase in wages. Government tried to balance budget between peace time and

war time. Increasing demands didn’t permit it.

There were a lot of dead people

This was the uniform used by the soldiers in World War I

Increase in the cost of leaving with the rise in taxes, rent and food prices.

Workers were being expected to accept working conditions that ordinary they

would not have accepted

Some workers were demanding and increase in wages to stop the increases in leaving costs. People felt that going on strike at time of war

was wrong.

The striking for munitions make the workers earn half penny extra a day.

While the children under 18 were hearted, dirty and in trenches.

There were strikes of engineers in the country. Gov. desesperate to avoid destruction in industries.

Because of war, they felt the need to work with the unions and called a special meeting. They

thought they had to include people that represent the workers in the meetings.
