Laboratorians who work in the blood bank know that testing patient specimens and entering blood into inventory are just some of the tasks that they perform. On a regular basis, blood bankers must resolve problems, solve mysteries, and comply with regulatory expectations. This workshop will cover a broad range of topics that all laboratorians who work in the blood bank will encounter during their careers, including how to approach some of the less common issues such as hosting an inspection. Example cases and problem resolution strategies will inform the discussion of technical topics and basic management concepts. You will also review the theory and/or history behind some of the non-technical aspects of working in the blood bank. Attend this workshop to perform all your duties-- technical and non-technical-- with more confidence!

Following this workshop, you will be able to:• List ABO and Rh variants that could lead to typing discrepancies

and apply efficient strategies for work-up and decision-making regarding transfusion in cases of typing discrepancies.

• Use various resources to find patient history information that can help in resolving blood typing or antibody problems.

• Describe the risks and benefits of transfusing red blood cells when pre-transfusion testing is not complete and appropriately guide clinicians in the decision to transfuse under these circumstances.

• Respond with confidence to inspectors with regard to your role in quality management and occurrence reporting.

Don’t miss this comprehensive approach to body fluid testing in your laboratory! Whether you want to enhance your skills when analyzing body fluids or you need practical information to ensure that your body fluid testing program thoroughly addresses both clinical and regulatory concerns, this workshop is for you! Topics will include the pathological conditions that prompt a test request; the patho-genesis of body fluids; preanalytical considerations; the cellular and biochemical analysis of CSF, serous fluids and synovial fluids; and analytical validation strategies. You’ll gain the answer regarding what should be measured on a specified fluid to aid in the best diagnosis and management of patients, which of course is always your primary concern.

Following this workshop, you will be able to:• Discuss the clinical utility of both biochemical and cellular body

fluid testing in CSF, serous fluids, and synovial fluids.• Review special considerations when deciding to perform body

fluid testing.• Identify challenges of analytical validation in the biochemical

analysis of body fluids.• Recognize abnormalities in cellular and biochemical body fluid

testing results in order to identify possible clinical implications.

Inappropriate quality control causes wasted time and resources, and the release of incorrect patient results. Attend this workshop to improve the quality control of your laboratory! Through lecture and case studies, you will:

• explore the fundamentals and real-life application of quality control • learn what to do about unexpected control values and how they

truly affect your results • add problem-resolution schemes to your QC troubleshooting skills• discover the most up-to-date quality control concepts • gain powerful tools to use in result analysis, method validation,

reference range selection, reagent crossover testing, and method comparison

Following this workshop, you will be able to• Minimize unwanted effects of different elements that affect QC

results.• Explain the conditions and steps involved in obtaining a valid QC

range.• Put method validation, Westgard rules, CVI, SDI, and new

reagent crossovers to practical use.• Troubleshoot specific laboratory problems by applying

appropriate quality control principles. • Use the latest quality control concepts confidently and

efficiently.

Although there are many tools used to formulate or confirm the di-agnosis of a hematologic disorder, morphology is the starting point. You must be acutely aware of even subtle changes on the peripher-al blood smear, or in the bone marrow, that may lead to additional testing and recognition of a disorder. Attend this workshop to gain in-depth understanding of the morphology of the WBC, RBC, and platelet cell lines, with emphasis on the significance of abnormali-ties in the peripheral blood smear! You’ll apply the material pre-sented to solve the challenges of numerous mini-cases, which will reinforce your knowledge for immediate use in the laboratory.

You’ll begin with a review of all cell lines, starting with RBC. The discussion will cover size, color and shapes, and inclusions, along with pathophysiology. A presentation on WBC will include nuclear and cytoplasmic morphologic changes, and anomalies. You will also discuss platelets--normal and abnormal. The session will also focus on malignancies, highlighting the morphology of acute leukemias, MDS, MPN, and chronic lymphoproliferative disorders, and on such issues as artifacts and “invaders” (parasites and bacteria).

Following this workshop, you will be able to:• Correlate common morphologic erythrocyte variations with

pathophysiology and clues to the diagnosis.• Correlate common leukocyte variations with pathophysiology

and clues to the diagnosis.• Correlate erythrocyte, leukocyte, and thrombocyte variations

within the same peripheral blood film with diagnostic clues and suggest additional testing.

Antimicrobial resistance of bacteria is one of the most serious threats facing healthcare today. Drug susceptibility testing of bacteria in the clinical microbiology laboratory is complicated because it involves many aspects of laboratory practice. Attend this workshop to stay current in this crucial area of the laboratory!

Clinical cases and laboratory-based scenarios will define and explain the different drug classes, the appropriate and inappropriate bug/drug and clinical site combinations for testing, and effective report-ing of antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) results to clinicians. Emphasis will be placed on actual and contemporary AST issues. The session will provide a foundation of understanding to prepare you to answer questions from healthcare colleagues regarding susceptibil-ity testing. By being well-educated on the subject of AST, you can help to create a strong partnership between the laboratory and the clinician, while paving the way for the best patient care and clinical outcomes.

Following this workshop, you will be able to:• Explain the differences among various antimicrobial classes.• Effectively apply appropriate susceptibility testing methods to

certain clinical scenarios. • Communicate the meaning of susceptibility testing results to

clinicians in a clear and concise manner.

7898 Unlocking the Mysteries of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing8:30 am - 4:30 pmAudrey N. Schuetz, MD, MPH, FASCPAssociate Director of Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, New York-Presbyterian Hospital; Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York, NY.

Advances in medical procedures and therapeutics and the need to reduce patient length of stay are compelling the coagulation department to expand its routine test menu. Attend this session to gain a thorough update in this important area and discover how your laboratory can contribute to the best patient care. You’ll begin with the basics: a review of hemostasis, including the synthesis and function of coagulation factors, followed by a discussion of current testing methodologies and instruments. Factor assays, von Will-ebrand testing, and platelet aggregation will be simplified to highlight the laboratory’s contribution to managing the bleeding patient. The focus will then shift to the thrombotic patient and a systematic ap-proach to cost-effective testing for genetic and acquired disorders. You’ll participate in case studies that will reinforce the information presented and demonstrate how expanding the in-house coagulation menu can lower laboratory spending and reduce a patient’s length of stay. Additional case studies will illustrate the unexplained interfer-ences that increasingly are affecting coagulation testing.

Following this workshop, you will be able to:• Describe the coagulation pathways and testing protocols for PT,

PTT, Fibrinogen, D-Dimer and Anti-Xa.• Implement simple algorithms to help the clinician better

manage the bleeding patient.• Discuss thrombophilia and identify cost-effective tests for your

laboratory.• Explain how bringing special coagulation testing in house can

reduce laboratory costs and patient length of stay.• Identify recently occurring pre-analytic interferences.

“Great explanation and review of Westgard and use of QC interpretation for the bench tech.”
