    The European

UnionDuring the last century, Europe was devastated by two worldwars which resulted in the deaths o millions, shattered Europe’seconomy and changed the borders o several countries. In order

to guarantee that this would not happen again, some Europeanleaders decided that their countries should work together toensure peace and prosperity or the uture.

The result is the European Union (EU). EU Member States nowwork together on many areas o common interest. Each MemberState has a voice in this process and decisions are made

collectively by the member countries and elected members o theEuropean Parliament.

Ireland has been a member o the EU or more than 40 years.Since 1973, EU membership has helped to transorm Ireland’seconomy, inrastructure and environment. It has influenced thelives o Irish citizens by supporting the arming community,

improving consumer rights, and changing the status o women. One o the greatest advantages o EU membership is that Irishpeople can travel, study or work in any other EU country.

Today, there are 28 Member States in the EU. But what do weknow about them? Let’s take a tour o the EU and see what wecan learn about our neighbours.
