La Scuola d’Italia Guglielmo Marconi is the onlyschool in North America that provides a classical, bilingualeducation rooted in the Italian and European traditions. Itwas founded in 1977 by the Italian Ministry of ForeignAffairs to meet the academic needs of Italians living in theNew York City area. Thanks to an ever increasing interestfrom American families, La Scuola has grown into a uniquebilingual educational institution, from the Preschool levelthrough Liceo (grades 9-12), reflecting the best featuresof the Italian and American educational systems.

La Scuola is committed to providing a thorough multicul-tural education to foster international understanding andopenness in order to prepare students to become citizensof the world. The challenging bilingual curriculum, deeplyrooted in the European tradition, offers an intensive aca-demic program that encompasses both the Italian and theAmerican cultures and is open to scientific and techno-logical innovations.

LA SCUOLA D’ITALIA GUGLIELMO MARCONI

La Scuola d’Italia is legally recognized by the ItalianMinistry of Education and chartered by the Regents of theUniversity of the State of New York as a private,independent co-educational American school. It is also amember of the New York State Association of IndependentSchools and the Guild of Independent Schools.

The main Campus (Preschool and Elementary) is housed ina historic building, once a private mansion located on East96th Street, while La Scuola’s Middle School and HighSchool are located on East 67th Street. Both buildings offerstate-of-the-art facilities and all the amenities to foster aproductive learning environment.

PRESCHOOL

La Scuola’s Preschool program encompasses pre-kindergarten and kindergarten years and focuses on thedevelopment of the personality of the child from an intel-lectual, cognitive, social, emotional, spiritual, and physicalstandpoint.

At La Scuola, this program presents a special and uniquefeature: in a bilingual environment, the young children areguided to acquire the ability to understand and communi-cate in two languages, Italian and English, thus laying thebuilding blocks for the bilingual competence required intheir further studies. Following the best Italian preschooltradition and best practices, the preschool curriculum is fo-cused on the development of the child’s identity, auton-omy and competence and incorporates the Reggio Emiliaphilosophy. To this end, the curriculum is articulated intofive so called “Campi di Esperienza,” which can also beconsidered pre-disciplinary educational areas. The staff ismade up of highly qualified and dedicated Italian andAmerican teachers. Classes are small and provide studentswith caring, individualized attention.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

T he program at the Elementary School (grades 1-5)is a highly structured curriculum that adheres to the Italianand New York State guidelines. The approach to learningis centered around a multi-disciplinary methodology whereliterature, history, social studies, geography, and currentevents are integrated.

Students are encouraged to become fluent and expres-sive, and to communicate effectively, in both the Englishand Italian languages. In a bilingual and bi-cultural setting,students are exposed to a variety of language experiences.The Italian and English teachers work closely together toreach common goals. The teachers integrate academicunits of study to enrich their program. A skillful, compe-tent staff cares for children in small classes, affording themindividualized attention and guidance.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

T he Scuola Media strengthens the bilingual andbicultural education begun in the lower school. It providesan environment where the child can develop and sharpencognitive and imaginative skills. The Middle School fostersemotional development and growth, expanding the child’sawareness and appreciation of the European and Americancultures and their values. The curriculum offers an inte-grated study of the Italian and English language and liter-ature, French (as a third modern language), AmericanHistory, social studies and geography, art, music, physicaleducation, and the use of computers. Special emphasis isplaced on the study of mathematics and the natural andphysical sciences.

This unique educational offering could also represent anextraordinary opportunity for Americans of Italian de-scent to reclaim the language of their forefathers and anunderstanding of their cultural roots.

Highly qualified and caring professionals conduct classesin Italian or English, depending on the discipline. Thesmall student body encourages relationships among stu-dents and between students and staff.

HIGH SCHOOL-LICEO SCIENTIFICO

La Scuola’s Liceo implements Howard Gardner’s FiveMinds for the Future in order to cultivate academic skillsand character to prepare students for success in collegeand future careers. The curriculum offers a balance of stud-ies in the classics and other humanities combined with anoutstanding math and science program that will earn col-lege credits in most American universities.

The humanities program, interdisciplinary and integratedthroughout the four years, includes the study of Italian,English, Latin language and literature, geography, history,philosophy, technical drawing and history of art, law andeconomics, and physical education. Great emphasis is alsoplaced on the study of mathematics, physics, biology, andchemistry.

Supplementary cultural projects in collaboration with vari-ous Italian institutions in New York and overseas are pro-vided on a regular basis, including exchange programswith Italian schools, special meetings with high ranking dig-nitaries (such as Italian Ministries, Italian Ambassador etc.)and outstanding Italian artists/interpreters.

Classes are small with personal attention and additionalsupport available for all students. At the completion of theirsenior year, students are required to take the Italian Min-istry of Education State Exam, the Maturità, an equivalentof the International Baccalaureate that is honored by all uni-versities in Europe and in the United States. This dual-rec-ognized degree allows students to embark on studies atlocal universities as well as universities abroad while havingthe knowledge and language skills to succeed.
