La Scuola d’italia Guglielmo marconi is the only school in North america that provides a classical, bilingual education rooted in the italian and European traditions. it was founded in 1977 by the italian ministry of foreign affairs to meet the academic needs of italians living in the New York city area. thanks to an ever increasing interest from american families, la Scuola has grown into a unique bilingual educational institution, from the preschool level through liceo (grades 9-12), reflecting the best features of the italian and american instruction systems.

la Scuola is committed to providing a thorough multicultural education to foster international understanding and openness in order to prepare students to become citizens of the world. the challenging bilingual curriculum, deeply rooted in the European tradition, offers an intensive academic program that encompasses both the italian and the american cultures and is open to scientific and technological innovations.

la Scuola d’italia is fully recognized by the italian ministry of Education and chartered by the regents of the university of the State of New York as a private, independent co-educational american school. it is also a member of the New York State association of independent Schools and the Guild of independent Schools.

la Scuola d’italia warmly thanks the parent association for the outstanding program implemented throughout the year: as the coordinator of the efforts enthusiastic parents in 2010-2011, the parent association supported many initiatives, organized a number of successful fundraising events and helped the administration develop new projects. a few of the scholastic year’s major successes were: creation of a computerized library circulation and online catalogue system at the 96th Street campus, purchase and installation of a new theater curtain and accoutrements at the annex, and student tickets to compagnia della rancia’s Pinocchio the Musical.

Enclosed is our annual report, covering the 2010-2011 school year. this

is our annual communication to parents, faculty and friends of la Scuola

d’italia so that all can see where we are, and how we are doing.

the school year just concluded was a good one. we saw continued

growth in our liceo, with continued good attendance in all of our other

divisions (media, elementare and materna). the graduation ceremony

for our liceo class of 2011 was truly a festive occasion for all.

as always, a successful school year depends on the efforts of many, including preside fiore,

mrs. pedicini, our resourceful and hardworking teachers, our dedicated staff, the energetic leaders

and members of our parents association, our friends at the consulate General and other offices of

the Government of italy, and, of course, our beloved students. please join me and the other trustees

in congratulating all of the administration, faculty and staff for a job well done. this brings to them,

and to all of you, thanks and gratitude from all the members of the Board of trustees for all of your

it is indeed a great pleasure for me to share with you this third edition of la Scuola d’italia annual report, which illustrates the richness and variety of activities and projects, both academic and cultural, that we were able to carry out during this very intense and successful academic year.

this was truly a very special year for our native country as it represented the 150th anniversary of the unification of italy: we have been very proud to join the consulate General of italy along with the other italian institutions in New York in celebrating this important milestone of the history of italy. Skimming through the annual report pages, you will find many events dedicated to the celebration of the 150th

anniversary of the unification of italy; in particular we were very grateful to consul General francesco m. talò when he proposed la Scuola to host on its premises a “risorgimento day” on march 17th, geared towards the entire New York italian community.

the unification of italy was also the leitmotif of our Gala Benefit dinner where our liceo students performed a brief and moving performance about the risorgimento.

with more than 500 attendees we broke the record in la Scuola Gala history: this record was made possible thanks to the efforts and commitment of our Gala committee, of all la Scuola parents, truly demonstrating that we are becoming a strong school community where all the components, teachers and Staff, parents and Students, are extremely proud of being part of la Scuola.

the increasing visibility of la Scuola in the italian, italian -american and american community of New York city, has brought us more students, especially at the high school level, where the number of students has doubled in four years. to better meet the needs of our liceo students, this year for the first time we have hired a part time college counselor.

we have also continued to strengthen the relationship with italian high schools by implementing once again the exchange program with the liceo farnesina in rome and by initiating another project with the State School office of lombardy that will lead to an agreement with la Scuola d’italia.

two exchange programs with the liceo farnesina have been implemented throughout the year: in November our 3rd and 4th liceo students went to rome and in march, 17 students from the liceo farnesina came to New York together with two teachers and preside olga olivieri. we were extremely pleased to welcome the entire group at our Gala Benefit dinner and our liceo students were thrilled to participate for the first time, along with the liceo farnesina guests, to an important session of the Model UN project that took place from march 9-12.

throughout the year we have worked tirelessly to improve both academics and organization in all our 4 divisions. our preschool division continued the action-research on bilingualism and made further and significant improvements towards the implementation of the reggio Emilia metodology.

our Elementary school division worked very hard in implementing the new indicazioni curricolari 2007. one of the most significant goals accomplished is the creation of new bilingual report cards for grades 1-5 that better reflect the bilingual curriculum component as well as the new indicazioni curricolari. the same project will be completed for the middle school by September 2011.

another important accomplishment has been the new Behavior policy and code of conduct that we were able to design and implement at the Elementary, middle school and liceo divisions at the beginning of the academic year.

together with the liceo teachers we have extensively worked in planning academic and cultural activities for our students and devoted special attention and time to the preparation of the challenging 12th grade italian Maturita` exam.

once again our students, like young ambassadors of the italian language and culture, have participated in several events implemented in conjunction with the other italian Government institutions and organizations, such as the columbus day parade, the week of the italian language at the italian cultural institute, and the week of remembrance at the consulate General of italy. the

strong boundaries established with the italian-american community in New York are clearly demonstrated by two outstanding events organized at la Scuola middle school-liceo campus: the November conference on maria montessori, in collaboration with coni uSa, cav. uff. mico delianova licastro and the January event “New York and Naples: Harbors of Dialogue”, on the occasion of the visit to New York of h.E. crescenzio cardinal Sepe, in collaboration with the consulate General of italy, the park East Synagogue, the primo levi center and i-italy.

thanks to the help and guidance of our Board of trustees, two important projects have been implemented in the month of July: the first one with the university of foreigners in perugia, where a group of three teachers and four liceo students are attending a one month italian language and culture course, and the second one that allowed two preschool teachers to participate in an international one week workshop on the reggio Emilia approach in ligonchio, reggio Emilia (July 2-7, 2011).

i warmly thank our chairman of the Board Stephen madsen, Esq. for his enlightened guidance, assistance and constant support throughout the year, our Vice chairman Stephen acunto, treasurer Jason deSena trennert, Secretary piera palazzolo falzone and all the other Board members: their help has truly been instrumental for the implementation of several la Scuola projects and activities throughout the year.

with deep appreciation, i would like to thank la Scuola faculty and Staff for their precious and invaluable work as educators. in particular i am pleased to acknowledge our deputy headmistress ms. pia pedicini for her indefatigable commitment towards la Scuola and each single family, and our division heads for their hard work and their patience and enthusiasm: maria cinquemani, aimee felton, augusta fleischer and michael prater.

i would like to take this opportunity to bid farewell to our beloved consul General ministro francesco maria talò, who has concluded his mandate in New York and who will

be leaving at the end of July 2011. we are all immensely grateful to ministro talò for his committment and continuous support to la Scuola d’italia throughout his four year appointment in New York. many of la Scuola’s accomplishments over the last four years would not have been possible without the instrumental and tireless work of our consul General. we wish him and his wife ornella, who has served as our proactive honorary president of the Gala committee, all the best for their future endeavors.

we would also like to thank the Educational director of the italian consulate, prof. antonio Benetti for his constant guidance and advice.

record-breaking attendance as well as record-breaking support at our annual Gala Benefit dinner in march underscored the growing recognition of la Scuola d’italia’s unique role as North america’s only preK-12th grade educational institution to provide a bilingual and bicurricular italian and american international education that trains students to be tomorrow’s leaders in this globalized world.

this increased participation also demonstrates the enhanced awareness of la Scuola’s ongoing efforts toward the promotion and preservation of the italian culture and heritage here in the united States through programming that reflects the brilliance of the italian language and culture and reaches across multiple communities and generations.

as we continually work to improve the overall quality of our institution, we must depend on the continuous support of our wonderful families and of all our la Scuola friends. the same challenges face la Scuola as do many others, namely bridging the gap between tuition and the costs associated with providing this extraordinary educational programming.

for the 2010-2011 academic year we set forth five main goals, along with detailed objectives for each one of them. The Technology Fund and the Paolo Boscolo Berto Scholarship Fund were created in the spring to address the most pressing of these needs.

la Scuola d’italia continues to grow by enriching and enhancing its educational offerings, broadening cultural programming, increasing visibility, and strengthening recruitment efforts. Support garnered from the annual fund has been instrumental in this growth. making a gift to the annual fund is one of the ways you can help the school reach its full potential.

the annual fund campaign raised $68,041.62 in unrestricted gifts while the newly established Technology Fund and Paolo Boscolo Berto Scholarship Fund (details follow on the following page) together raised $48,000 for a combined total of $116,041.62 toward 2010-2011 goals . we extend our gratitude to the following friends and families who have supported our annual fund campaign this year.

On Saturday october 8th some representatives of la Scuola d’italia had the pleasure to attend the reception of the columbus citizen foundation where one of our parents and Board members, treasurer Jason DeSena Trennert was honored. this was a wonderful reception with almost one thousand people in attendance.

once again we express our heartfelt thanks to Jason deSena trennert who mentioned la Scuola and addressed our institution with words of high appreciation during his outstanding speech, in both italian and English.

almost all of our Students, our faculty and Staff along with many parents participated in the Columbus Day Parade. thanks to the personal involvement of mr. lawrence auriana and, once again, with the precious help of mr. Jason deSena trennert, we were able to truly enjoy the parade, with a 50th position which gained full coverage from the major television channels including rai international, channel 4 NBc and the newspaper america oggi.

at the columbus day parade we also had the opportunity to inaugurate the celebrations of the ItaLY@

anniversary of the unification of italy, showcasing a banner with the green logo prepared by the Embassy of italy in washington d.c.

10th edition of the Week of the itaLian Language

On monday, october 18th la Scuola d’italia students together with iacE students had the honor to inaugurate the 10th Edition of the week of the italian language at the italian cultural institute in New York. our 4th and 5th grade students performed “tutti a taVola” a series of Nursery rhymes, poems and recipes about italian cuisine. our 8th grade and liceo students,dressed in beautiful costumes, performed “L’ITALIANO (visibile) della Citta`, inspired by the book Le Citta` Invisibili by italo calvino.

Both shows illustrated the richness and variety of the italian culture leaving the audience fascinated by la Scuola students’ ability to perform and to master the contents.

at the end of the performances we all enjoyed delicious refreshments provided by la Scuola’s p.a.

our Students were welcomed and greeted by consul General francesco m. talò, the director of the italian cultural institute riccardo Viale, the cultural attaché Giovanni de Santis and the iacE director ilaria costa.

On thursday october 21st, our 1st -6th grade students had the pleasure of attending the show “pinocchio,” an italian musical based on one of the most famous and beautiful novels by carlo collodi. our students enjoyed this beautiful and fun presentation of “pinocchio” and we were all very grateful to la Scuola’s p.a. and p.a. president patrizia del Gatto for providing a generous donation that allowed all our elementary school students and the 6th grade class to attend this great show.

maria montessori is best known for her innovative method of educating children from birth to adolescence. her philosophy is still in use today in a large number of public as well as private schools throughout the world and most of them are in the u.S. the essence of the montessori method consists of teaching students ways to develop their own skills at a pace they set for themselves. maria montessori was born in 1870 in chiaravalle, italy. as the first woman to graduate from the university of rome la Sapienza medical School, montessori became the first female doctor in italy. She was a member of the university’s psychiatric clinic and became intrigued with trying to

educate children with special needs in rome. in 1896 maria montessori was appointed director of the Scuola ortofrenica, an institution devoted to the care and education of the mentally challenged. She was then asked to start a school in rome, and casa dei Bambini (children’s home) opened on January 6, 1907. By 1917 there was an intense interest in her method in North america. in 1925, dr. montessori was invited by italian dictator Benito mussolini to introduce her ideas throughout the italian national school system. But by 1934 montessori had found the totalitarianism of fascism incompatible with her sensibility, so she moved to Spain. when the Spanish civil war broke out in 1936 she moved to theNetherlands. in 1939, the theosophical Society of india extended an invitation, which dr. montessori accepted. She was accompanied on the journey by her only son, mario montessori. this trip heralded the beginning of her special relationship with india. with the help of her son she conducted courses called the indian montessori training courses. these courses laid a strong foundation for the montessori movement in india. in 1949 she returned to the Netherlands and died there in1952, after a lifetime devoted to the study of child development.

in education one must consider the importance of movement. for me, i do not consider it to be a beginning or an integration, but rather a fundamental essence in the development of the child. i am certain it seems strange that i consider it to be fundamental when most consider it to be but a part of development. So, is one saying that body movement is more important than the development of the mind? i’m not saying that one should not be concerned with the mind, i am saying that movement is very important for the development of the personality of the individual. isn’t it indeed “to act” a practice of human behavior? isn’t it through such actions that the individual transforms the environment? certainly we look for the creation of the thinking man, however to date in education no attention is given to movement at all and for intelligence to flourish it needs that the individual develop motor skills.”

during the 2010-2011 academic year we continued the “encounters with the authors” that we inaugurated in the 2008-2009 academic year. once again our la Scuola middle school and liceo students had the great opportunity of meeting italian contemporary writers and other important protagonists of today’s italy. these master classes took place in the school gym and in other locations such as the 92nd Street Y cultural center and were possible thanks to the strong cooperation with various italian and New York institutions, such as the italian cultural institute, the consulate General of italy, education office, the iacE organization, casa italiana NYu Zerilli marimo`, centro primo levi, the New York pEN festival and others.

on Wednesday, October 20th, Benedetta tobagi, the daughter of the famous italian journalist walter tobagi who was killed by a terrorist group in italy in 1980, presented to our liceo students her book Come mi batte forte il tuo cuore, Storia di mio padre. tobagi talked about this tragedy in a very intense and sincere way, trying to explain it in the general context of the difficult period of terrorism faced by italy during the ‘70s and up to the ‘80s. Students participated with great interest and asked several questions demonstrating their attention and sensitivity to the topics discussed and to the recent history of italy.

on Monday November 8th we were very pleased to welcome at our liceo three italian writers, winners of the Zerilli-marimo`/city of rome prize for italian fiction: helena Janeczek, Sebastiano Nata and Gabriele pedulla`. the writers were accompanied by the director of the prize, dr. maria ida Gaeta, who is also the director of the prestigious “festival delle letterature” in rome. h. Janeczek presented her book Le Rondini di Montecassino (Ed. Guanda 2010), S.Nata presented his latest novel Il valore dei Giorni (feltrinelli 2010) and G. pedulla` illustrated his collection of short stories Lo spagnolo senza sforzo, (Einaudi 2009).

all our liceo students, gathered in the gym, attended this book presentation and during the question and answer session asked many thoughtful and relevant questions. we warmly thank the director of the istituto italiano di cultura prof. riccardo Viale and the director of casa italiana dr. Stefano albertini for giving la Scuola this great opportunity to host this event.

on Thursday, April 14, the 8th Grade and some liceo students had the opportunity to meet and speak to Nobel peace prize winner Elie wiesel, on the occasion of his lecture at the 92nd Street Y cultural center. the 8th Grade class just finished reading his award winning memoir called Night which is about his experiences as a 15 year old boy in the concentration camp of auschwitz. la Scuola d’italia warmly thanks massimo Gaggi and tamara Jadrejcic (parents of Bruno & alexander) for providing this wonderful opportunity to our students. our students prepared and handed to the distinguished author a collection of poems inspired by the reading of his book. Shortly after, on may 5th , we were honored with a heartfelt letter of acknowledgement from the Nobel prize winner wiesel.

3Rd exchange pRogRam with licEo farNESiNa iN romE

November 19-29: Our 3rd and 4th Liceo students went to Rome

March 6-14: 17 students from the Liceo Farnesina came to New York and participated in the Model UN and at our Gala Benefit Dinner along with our Liceo students

From November 19-29, our third and fourth liceo students participated in the exchange program with the liceo farnesina in rome. this experience was a great success and all our students highly enjoyed not only the various visits to sites of great historical and cultural interest, but also the very warm atmosphere found among each of the hosting families. while in rome, our students participated in two workshops about the Model UN project, which has been implemented by the liceo farnesina over the last 12 years (rimuN project).

From March 6-14, on the occasion of an important international session of the model uN- NhSmuN project in New York, with students from 3,000 high schools involved, 17 students from the liceo farnesina came to New York and participated, along with 20 la Scuola liceo students, in this 4 day special model uN project. during this period, thanks to the generosity and kindness of our la Scuola families, we had the opportunity to reciprocate the same wonderful hospitality by hosting this group from rome.

the group from the liceo farnesina, composed of 17 students, 2 teachers and preside olga olivieri, arrived on Sunday march 6th and left on monday march 14th. they truly had a great time in New York and with la Scuola community: not only they highly enjoyed the NhSmuN project and the related opening and closing ceremonies at the uN, but they also participated in our Gala Benefit dinner as special guests, witnessing a unique and moving celebration of our italian identity, culture and values.

This year at our Gala benefit dinner we were proud to honor a former teacher of la Scuola, raffaella cribiore, professor of classics at NYu, acclaimed author of books and articles about education in antiquity as well as of a book for children, Martina’s Town.

it was an immense joy for all our la Scuola community when professor cribiore accepted our invitation to come to visit “her school” and read to our elementary children from her book, Martina’s Town on friday december 10th . the 4th and 5th graders were enchanted and captivated by raffaella. She graciously answered all of the questions and spoke about her experience in New York and as a writer.

we were also very pleased when, shortly afterwards, professor cribiore lectured our middle school and liceo students about education in ancient times.

“Andare a scuola nell’antichita`” was the title and topic her lecture addressed to our middle school and liceo Students on wednesday, february 2nd. professor cribiore fully captured the attention and interest of our students during the entire lecture with her powerpoint slide presentation of a Greek school excavated in Egypt. our students, in particular the youngest 6th graders, asked many questions and were completely mesmerized by all the discoveries illustrated by prof. cribiore.

honoring professor cribiore at our Gala 2011 has been a very special event that marked, we hope, the reestablishment of a long lasting, strong collaboration between her and la Scuola for many years to come.

raffaella cribiore, currently a professor of classics at New York university, grew up in italy where she earned a laurea, magna cum laude, in classics at the catholic university in milan. She taught junior high school for four years and after moving to New York in 1976 she taught italian, history and latin for six years (1978-1984) at la Scuola d’italia’s first location on Bleeker Street. She attended Yale and later earned her phd in classics at columbia university in 1993 with a dissertation on Greek school texts found in Egypt. there she was the curator of papyri in the rare Book and manuscript library and took care of columbia’s large collection of Egyptian scrolls written in Greek and arabic. at the same time she taught both undergraduate and graduate students in the department of classics for several years as an adjunct professor. raffaella cribiore’s four books and approximately fifty articles deal with the different aspects of education in antiquity, a field of study which fascinated her as a result of her own experience as a teacher. She was also curious to discover if the ancient Greeks and romans could provide us with advice on how to best educate men and women in modern times.

her first book was Writing,Teachers and Students in Graeco-Roman Egypt (atlanta 1996). it was a collection of over 400 Greek school exercises, including homework, and educational texts that referred to teaching writing in antiquity and to primary education. after the

book’s popular release, it was immediately published as an e-book—a privilege reserved for very few texts. She published her second book in 2001—Gymnastics of the Mind: Greek Education in Hellenistic and Roman Egypt (princeton), which won the prestigious award of the american philological association in 2004 as the best classics book – this publication was also immediately made available as an e-book. in this publication, prof. cribiore tried to locate schools in the ancient world, studied the principles that governed upper education, and looked at the role played by families. She also coauthored with r.S. Bagnall, Women’s Letters in Ancient Egypt: 300 BC-AD 800 (ann arbor 2006) which investigated the education of women in antiquity. in 2007 The School of Libanius in Late Antique Antioch (princeton) followed. The School of Libanius was finished during a blissful stay in princeton as a member of the institute for advanced Study in 2004.

prof. cribiore has maintained a close relation with papyrology, her first love, by studying and publishing articles on various subjects. Every year in february, she goes to the dakhleh oasis in the south of Egypt and participates in an archaeological excavation of the roman town of amheida (ancient trimitis), which it is now sponsored by NYu. there, a roman school was discovered, with three rooms, and poetic texts written in red ink on the walls, which raffaella cribiore is in the process of publishing.

in 2010 she also wrote a book with ten stories for children called Martina’s Town. these were stories she told her daughter, martina, many years ago when taking her to school.

they attempt to look at New York through the eyes of an eight-year-old italian little girl. recently, when prof. cribiore came to read some of the stories to the children of la Scuola d’italia, one little boy told her, “You know, you are good. write more!” She is doing just that. prof. cribiore has two grown children and resides in NYc with her husband alberto.

coLLege counceLoR at La ScuoLa

This academic year for the first time in la Scuolas’ history, we hired a part time college counselor Dr. Bari Norman, a former admissions officer at Barnard college of columbia university; her web site, www.expertadmissions.com, shows many newspaper and television interviews (including the New York times, wall Street Journal, the today Show, NBc and others).

we organized a liceo college Night on September 24th , including an orientation lecture conducted by experts from the Bocconi university in milan; a Junior college Night took place on January 13th and a Sophomore – freshman college Night was held on february 3rd .

dr. Norman has worked in particular with our 4th liceo students during the first months of the academic year; in the spring she began working also with the 3rd liceo class: a SAT preparation course in collaboration with the Princeton Review took place on Saturdays at la Scuola’s 67th Street location from february 19th to may 7th. 10 students from the 3rd liceo class registered for this course and attended it regularly.

the work done by dr. Bari Norman this year also includes:

la Scuola d’italia has been proud to have dr. Bari Norman as its School college counselor this year and looks forward to increasing her hours of appointment for the next academic year.

• communication with college representatives, including whether our students are read as “international students,”

• treatment of standardized test scores by admissions committees for our students, and discussions regarding a spring program;

• completion of School profile, including our students grade average over the past 3 years

• purchase of software that allows liceo students, beginning generally during their 11th grade, to create their own online portal and navigate the college application process, researching college requirements and tracking their applications.

coming Soon at La ScuoLa … a Reggio emiLia aRt ateLieR!we are very proud of our preschool and with the results accomplished this year. we have continued our action research about bilingualism in all our pre-school classes, under the guidance of the expert prof. Sarah michael luna and with the involvement of all our teachers coordinated by maria cinquemani.

we have also made further progress in the implementation of the reggio Emilia metodolgy: during the professional days of the academic year, preschool teachers have developed the topics of documentation and Space organization according with the reggio Emilia approach, with a special focus on the setting up of an art atelier that will highly stimulate children’s creativity.

we are very grateful to our Board of trustees who has approved to finance a July 2011 project, allowing two of our teachers, rosa di maggio and laura la rocca to participate in a seven day international workshop in ligonchio, reggio Emilia on “International Encounters with the Culture of the Atelier”.

biLinguaL LectuReS the preschool has also been very pleased to organize this year a series of lectures on bilingualism and early childhood language development, geared to the preschool parents.

on January 28th and on april 8th dr. Sara michael luna, professor of Early childhood at Queens college, spoke about developmental milestones and how la Scuola preschool teachers prepare age appropriate curriculum in italian and English for our youngest learners. at both lectures parents had a lively discussion about how to support both English and italian at home and in school.

on January 21st, on the occasion of the visit of H.E. Crescenzio Cardinal Sepe, Archbishop of Naples, la Scuola d’italia Guglielmo marconi had the pleasure of hosting a very special event thanks to the initiative of our Consul General Ministro Francesco M. Talò.

Students from New York public and private schools joined la Scuola middle school and liceo students for this event in our auditorium-Gym at the media -liceo campus. the main topic was the dialogue on tolerance in the 21st century, featuring a reading of memories of the deportation of italian Jews followed by a conversation with H.E. Crescenzio Cardinal Sepe, Archbishop of Naples, and Rabbi Arthur Schneier (Park East Synagogue).

Notwithstanding the “snow day”, on thursday, January 27th, some of our liceo students participated in the “Giornata della memoria” at the entrance of the consulate General of italy, the reading ceremony of names of Jews deported from italy and the italian territories.

Liceo pRogetto tRaSveRSaLe 2011

the liceo “progetto trasversale”is an interdisciplinary project on a main topic that is analyzed and developed by different points of view corresponding to different disciplines. the project is divided into two parts: the first presented by the liceo teachers and the second by the liceo students who prepared specific papers and presentations related to the main topic.

this year’s topic was Food, with this specific title

on tuesday, february 15th, the liceo teachers presented to the students their papers about the topic. during the week of march 28th we had the pleasure to host a series of four workshops about Nutrition and Food presented by dr. lucilla titta, an expert on nutrition from the fondazione Veronesi in milan, addressed to elementary school students, middle school and liceo students and la Scuola parents.

we warmly thanked the p.a. for sponsoring this workshop and dr. lucilla titta for offering her contribution to la Scuola.

this year la Scuola d’italia has been very proud to join the italian institutions in New York for the celebration of the italian “risorgimento” and the 150th anniversary of the unification of italy.

we were able to host and organize several different events:

February 12th and 14th:we hosted a workshop at the middle school & liceo campus gym/ auditorium on the risorgimento “i luoghi dell’unita` d’italia” organized by iacE (italian american committee on Education) in collaboration with the consulate General of italy, Education office. this workshop was conducted by two experts from the Studio arcobaleno, milan italy and was attended by 50 teachers of italian from the tri-state area. on monday february 14th on the occasion of the second “teachers professional day” all la Scuola teachers participated in a seminar about the risorgimento conducted by the same experts from Studio arcobaleno.

February 16th :our liceo students visited the Giuseppe Garibaldi and antonio meucci museum/house in Staten island, where they met with a special guest, Prof. Giuliano Amato, a member of Italy’s Parliament for 18 years, former Prime Minister of Italy (1992-93 and 2000-2001), a distinguished professor of constitutional law and president of the National committee for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the unification of italy.

March 11th :our Gala Benefit dinner celebrated in various manners the 150th anniversary: la Scuola liceo students presented a brief performance on the topic of “Giuseppe Verdi” and the “risorgimento”. during the student performance, we showed video slides about “risorgimento” times and videos produced by the italian rai.

March 17th:on march 17, 1861, King Vittorio Emanuele ii officially became the first King of the italian kingdom which included for the first time Southern italian regions set free by Giuseppe Garibaldi. on march 17, 2011, la Scuola d’italia hosted a “Risorgimento Day” celebrating the 150th Birthday of italy. the event took place at the middle School & liceo campus, with the participation of our consul General ministro francesco m. talò, other New York schools studying italian and supported by iacE.

March 27th on march 27th our talented la Scuola girl choir performed the National anthems at the St.regis hotel on the occasion of the visit to New York of the president of the italian republic the hon.Giorgio Napolitano. that same day in the evening all our liceo students sang the National anthems at a reception at industria Superstudio in honor of the president Giorgio Napolitano.

Students asked several great questions to prof. amato and his answers on the topics enlightened them. in particular i would like to thank Benton Madsen, Cherice Nealy, Ari Gleizer and Zeno Benetti for their involvement in the question and answer session. an extended thanks to our consul General of italy francesco m. talò, who invited la Scuola d’italia to participate in this event.

la Scuola’s guests demonstrated their enthusiasm, dedication and support throughout the evening. the ambassador of italy to the united States, Giulio terzi di Sant’agata, our honoree prof. raffaella cribriore and guest of honor dr. antonio monda, spoke highly about la Scuola and wished us future success.

la Scuola d’italia was extremely honored to welcome as a special guest The Honorable Emma Bonino, Vice President of the Italian Senate and a renowned champion of defense for human rights around the world.

another special guest at our Gala was the olympic champion igor cassina, a renowned gymnast in italy and internationally, with a gold medal in the men’s horizontal bar won at the 2004 Summer olympics in athens.

in honor of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of italy, la Scuola 8th grade and liceo students performed some excerpts from the “risorgimento”. we thank the entire Gala committee, pa representatives, parents, teachers and Staff of la Scuola for making this evening memorable and a great success.

“RiSoRgimento day” maRch 17th 1861-2011in honor of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the unification, on march 17, 2011, la Scuola d’italia hosted a “Risorgimento Day” at our middle School and liceo campus.

our 5th grade, middle school and liceo students opened the celebration by singing the National anthems followed by welcoming remarks by preside anna fiore who read an excerpt from the presidente della repubblica italiana, Giorgio Napolitano. consul General, ministro francesco m. talò read the Proclamation written by the President of the United States, Barack Obama on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary celebration expressing his recognition and highlighted the important milestone in italian history, honoring the joint efforts of american and italians to foster freedom, democracy, and shared values throughout the world.

professor riccardo Viale, director of the italian cultural institute highlighted the values of the italian “risorgimento”, which inspired the italian republican constitution.

la Scuola 6th graders gave a wonderful performance of “La piccola vedetta lombarda” from the book Libro Cuore, by Edmondo de amicis, and our 8th graders and liceo students performed several historical pieces from the “risorgimento”.

Special remarks were made from Dr. Silvana Mangione, Vice Segretario Generale del consiglio Generale degli italiani all’estero who gave la Scuola the flag of “La Repubblica Cispadana” as a symbol to remember how the tri-color flag of italy originated.

we showed excerpts from the video “Garibaldi eroe romantico e moderno” by paola Gallo.

following there was a brief performance by mario fratti and la Scuola art history and theater teacher rosaria crisafi, inspired by the life of Giuseppe Garibaldi.

the event ended with a Birthday cake to celebrate the 150th year of the unification of italy. we warmly thank all who attended and we also address special thanks to the pa representatives for providing us with the delicious refreshment.

On Sunday, march 27th, continuing the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the unification of italy and in honor of the president of the italian republic the hon. Giorgio Napolitano, our applauded and talented la Scuola girls choir (grades 8-11) together with 10 students from our lady of lourdes catholic School, supported by iacE, all accompanied by maestro petrika melo sang the national anthems at St. regis hotel.

the celebration continued into the evening at industria Superstudio, where all our liceo students (boys and girls) grades 8-11 attended and sang the national anthems in honor of the president of the republic of italy.

these events were a great privilege for la Scuola and it was an honor to be able to meet the president of the italian republic.

La ScuoLa technoLogy pRoJect and LibRaRy pRoJectMARCh-JULY 2011

Thanks to the donations received at la Scuola Gala Benefit dinner, during the may 11th Board meeting la Scuola d’italia Board of trustees approved a complex and thorough technology infrastructure project for both buildings.

throughout the summer we implemented the computing technology enhancement on both buildings; we expect to complete this complex project prepared by our technology company, derive tech, by the end of august 2011.

as a result, we will have an improved, updated, safer and faster system, including wireless and new computers for our elementary grades. with the help of our school architect, anna thorsdottir, the computer room space on the 5th floor at the elementary school has been completely remodeled and refurnished.

96th StReet SchooL campuS LibRaRy pRoJect

la Scuola d’italia warmly thanks the 2010-2011 parent association for their donation of $7,400 to cover the contract price for the follett destiny library manager project.

this project will include:

• destiny library manager follett hosted Solution - which includes alliance plus, destiny Quest, one Search and titlepeek

• project management, installation of destiny library manager and technical administrative training

• 1000 polythermal title barcodes

• 1000 Blank Spine labels

• 3800g image team Scanner with Stand (5 year warranty)

• 3 days of onsite services with a follett cataloger and 2 workers adding the titles into destiny library manager and bar-coding the books.

the library project this year has been moving along swiftly. with guidance from teresa tarillo, library committee leader, and Spiro Gouras, library coordinator, the library has evolved into a great space and will continue to move forward.

in the 2010-2011 school year, the books have been reorganized and labeled, children in the school have been given temporary library cards for use in library sessions and an interim book borrowing system has been implemented for, both English and italian books. Now, after many meetings with follett library Services, we are able to reach the next stage of our development, which is expected to begin this June.

in the 2011-2012 school year, la Scuola library will have an online catalog. all books, italian and English, will have destiny library management software that teachers, parents, and students can access from any computer. this will make it easier for anyone in the school community to see what gaps we still have in our collection. we will shift our focus to keeping the library in order, distributing permanent library cards to students for the electronic borrowing system, and adding more high interest books to our library. We hope to have our entire catalog online and new library cards given to students by November 2011.

Liceo tRip to boSton

From may 31st to June 2nd, our I, II and III Liceo students accompanied by the teachers Michael Prater, Anna Bartocci and Andrea Malaguti, took an end of year trip to Boston. while there, the students were guided through a tour of the historic sites of the city as well as its cultural landmarks. they walked the freedom trail and learned about the role of Boston in american history through the landmark buildings and what still survived from that era.

they also visited the museum of fine arts and the New England aquarium. in addition, the students visited harvard, where they were able to enjoy a private tour of the prestigious museum of Scientific instruments.

Once again this academic year the soccer season involved both our middle School and liceo students. thanks to the enthusiasm of our Gym teacher and coach mr. José rubiera, our teams competed with many other independent schools and showed their talent and dedication towards the sport.

la Scuola d’italia is happy to announce that 2 students from our middle school have been selected to participate as Journalist at the CONI USA Olimpiadi di Macerata from June 21st to July 1st .

there were many applicants, but only four finalists. three finalists were from la Scuola d’italia and were invited by ambassador of italy h.E. Giulio terzi di Sant’agata to participate in washington d.c. at the June 2nd celebration: Victoria Becker, dante hin Gasco and pietro Valetto, all from our 6th grade class.

the students Victoria Becker and Dante Hin Gasco went to macerata, italy, and reported on the 10-day olympiad, and the tour of the olympic team. their reports will be featured in america oggi magazine, along with international press-releases.

For the third time in la Scuola d’italia history our 8th grade and 12th grade students were honored with a formal graduation ceremony at the consulate General of italy in New York.

On June 20th, after the opening remarks by head of School anna fiore, the chairman of the Board Stephen madsen Esq. , the director of the italian cultural institute prof. riccardo Viale, the director of the Exams commission dott.ssa adalgisa maurizio congratulated our students and highlighted the very good exams results, showed by three “10 e lode” awarded to 3 of our 8th graders. Shortly after, consul General ministro francesco m. talò awarded our 8th grade students the 8th grade italian diploma.

On June 30th , our 12th grade students, after completing their challenging italian “maturita`” exam, dressed in cap and gown, received their diplomas by consul General ministro francesco m. talò. to congratulate the graduates, special remarks were made by head of School anna fiore, the chairman of the Board Stephen madsen Esq. and by the head of the Exam commission, dott.ssa adalgisa maurizio.

pRoJect With the uNiVErSitY for forEiGNErS iN pEruGiaJULY 1- 31, 2011

with the help of prof. roberto dolci, New York visiting professor at the John d. calandra italian american institute- Queens college, we have worked on a project, the aim of which is to provide italian language courses to be held at the university of perugia for those liceo students who need to improve their italian in view of the challenging 12th grade final maturita` exam.

this project was approved by the Board of trustees and on July 1st a group of three teachers and four liceo students left to attend a one month Italian language and culture course at the University of Foreigners in Perugia.

the students are Benton madsen and Sabrina Scattoni, 9th grade; cherice Nealy and Natalia romero, 11th grade. they were accompanied by teachers michael prater, English teacher and liceo coordinator, christine morga, ESl teacher, and Jennifer dionisio, Kindergarten and 1st grade English teacher.

9th grade students Benton madsen and Sabrina Scattoni were hosted by two families from the liceo montessori in perugia, while the other 2 students and the teachers were accommodated at the university’s dorms (casa dello Studente).

the group enjoyed many cultural activities (umbria Jazz and Spoleto festival dei due mondi) and participated in field trips in the beautiful region of umbria.

last year we received a donation towards this project from Brunello cucinelli, who is a strong supporter of the university for foreigners in perugia.

on april 9, 2010 an agreement was signed between la Scuola and the university for foreigners in perugia. this agreement focuses on common research about bilingual education and teaching in a bilingual setting, on students exchange programs and teachers professional development opportunities.
