More about Number and Gender

How do I know if a noun is masculine or feminine? NOT SO EASY …

Think about the ____________________________ of the word. If the definition of the word refers to a boy or a man (son, brother, father, etc.), the noun is ____________________________. If the definition of the word refers to a girl or a woman (daughter, sister, mother, etc.), the noun is ____________________________.

Look at the ________________________ of the word. Masculine nouns ________________________ but NOT ________________________ end in - ________. Feminine nouns ________________________ but NOT ________________________ end in - ________. (Also nouns that end in –ión and –dad are usually feminine.)

HOWEVER, there are some nouns that do not follow a patter at all. You will need to just _________________ the gender of these “tricky” ones. Can I change the gender of a noun? _________________________________________________!

GUSTAR

We have used this verb GUSTAR so far this year to say that we ____________________ something.

Gustar is verb that is in its ‘own league’, meaning that it does not follow the regular conjugation rules. We can ___________________________ conjugate gustar like regular –AR verbs.

We only ever use two forms of gustar – GUSTA and GUSTAN.

Instead of subject pronouns, we instead use indirect object pronouns. We will begin with the first 3.

Me gusta: __________________________ Te gusta: __________________________

A ________ le gusta: __________________________ name

To say that one likes to DO something, use ME / TE / LE GUSTA + infinitive. We used this form in the last unit.

Me gusta bailar. __________________________ A Juan le gusta cazar. __________________________

To say that one likes ONE thing, use ME / TE / LE GUSTA + singular noun.

Me gusta el traje de baño. __________________________ Te gusta la bufanda. __________________________

To say that one like MORE THAN ONE thing, use ME / TE / LE GUSTAN + plural noun.

Te gustan los mitones. __________________________ A ella le gustan las botas. __________________________

Put no in front of ME / TE / LE GUSTA(N) to say one does not like one or more things.

No me gustan las faldas rojas. __________________________ A Pepe no le gusta el cinturón café. __________________________
