La Palma has seven historic eruptions, the most recent in 1971 from the Teneguia vent. Other vents formed in historic time include Tahuya, a cone of lapilli, scoria and bombs about 3,000 feet tall (1,000 m) tall that formed over a three month period in 1585 by Strombolian eruptions and San Martin, a cone and crater that formed over two and a half months in 1646.

La Palma stretches 21,320 ft above the surroundingocean floor. Two main rock layers separated by a lineabout 1400 feet above sea level make up La Palma. The lower layer is made of pillow lavas cut by basalticdikes. The thickness of the pillow lavas range from 33to 1150 ft. Most of the dikes are located within 2 milesof the west coast. The upper layer consists of basalticlavas and pyroclastic rocks. Small alkalic domes havepushed their way into this area.

La Palma lies in both the cool north-easterly Canarycurrent and the north-easterly trade winds, giving it asunny climate with year-round moderate temperatures, rather cooler than would be expected given the latitudeof the island. Rainfall levels vary substantially acrossthe island. The prevailing north-easterly trade winds bring moisture down to the Canaries, and the highaltitude of the island means that most of this is deposited to the north-east. The southern part of the island is relatively dry and sunny. This gives rise todramatic differences in vegetation.
