What makes you feel free?Feeling good with my life and soul. Believing in my artwork, while keeping a humble attitude towards my achievements. Being a self-independent woman also brings me lots of joy!

What worries you? My country’s state of mind worries me very much. All the killing and hate that has been growing between Puerto Ricans. I wish we could overcome this moment of social illness and become better, respectful human beings.

Your favorite film?I have a few on the list: The Last Samurai, Irreversible, La Teta Asustada, The Triplets of Belleville, Princess Mononoke, among others…

Favorite musician, group, song/album, or combination thereof? I gotta’ admit I love to dance reggaeton hahaha! … salsa, merengue, bachata. Of course Calle 13 is on the list. But there are also a few Indie-bands I love, like: The Whitest Boy Alive, Peter Bjorn and John, Mike Snow, Radiohead, etc. Steel Pulse and Bad Brains are a must! I also have a passion for big band music, Frank Sinatra, and punk rock.

Your drug of choice? Life, and lots of toxic painting varnish…hahaha! I am definitely a cigarette hater, that’s a slow death.

Who inspires you right now?Artists that have a concept involving social change, or well-thought, site specific installations. Creative people, from various backgrounds, also inspire my life. As long as they are producing good quality work, and carry a positive vision towards life and people.

What do you think your purpose is on earth? As a female artist, I feel a great commitment towards my country’s art development, and the generations to come. I always do my best in every piece and/or project because my artwork is to be enjoyed by the public.

What do you love about your city and what do you hate about it?My love and hate relationship with NYC is endless. I do hate the winter, but I have learned to love this city because it has given me so much: many friends, important art collectors, awesome art shows, creative energy, and the opportunity to live off my artwork. What would you like to come back as in your next life? A komodo dragon. That way I can chill all day in the island. Plus, it’s my favorite animal.

A quote to live by or personal motto? “How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone.” Coco Chanel

What is Soul? I only know that if you’re a backstabber, you have no soul.

S o f i a M a l d o n a d o

Tengo varias en la lista: The Last Samurai, Irreversible, La Teta Asustada, The Triplets of Belleville, Princess Mononoke u otras.

The Whitest Boy Alive, Peter Bjorn and John, Mike Snow, Radio-head, etc.

Coco Chanel

¿Qué es alma? Solo sé que si eres traicionera/o no tienes alma.

Sofia did the cover art for Missiles del Racimo, and drew portraits that were used in the introduction for three of the four starring skaters.

Have you ever wanted an original one-of-a-kind bathing suit, designed to fit your body type and lifestyle?

Well, Idalia Suarez specializes in custom tailoring and can make it hap-pen for you! Working out of her tailor shop, located steps away from the shoreline in the beautiful beach town of Jobos, she has been de-signing and producing clothes for over twelve years. In 2009, inspired by the birth of her daughter, she began exploring and honing her skills in the field of Swimwear design. Using the highest quality lycra, known as the 4-way stretch, each piece is lined and has a very professional and detailed finish. Recently, she presented her first full collection as an avant-guard Swimwear designer, entitled “Agua Salá” (Salt Wa-ter), which was inspired by her love for ocean waves. This collection definitely has a retro influence and “is made for woman who enjoy the magic felt when you come in contact with the sea,” explains Idalia. Currently working on her next collection, which will be showcased at the beginning of November in West Fashion Week, she is continuously sketching and searching for new inspirations in the her surroundingContact Info: Tel. 787-485-9861 Email: idaliasuarezswimweardesigner@yahoo.

Production is currently taking place in Argentina, utilizing the

the surfer girls. The monokini, which is a sexier version of a full piece

suit that exposes the entire back so you can keep a bikini like tan line

and the bottoms are pretty small, usually the more fabric the suit has

the more bunched up and uncomfortable it tends to be. Lisie

Gonzalez and Natty Perez love the Colaless cut, it is a

brazilian style tanga. The front is wider, resembling the boy short cut

and the backside is smaller than the conventional bathing suit. Year

after year we continue producing this model because it definitely

doesnʼt move out of place, it is our top seller on the island.

LIR: Natty, your favorite Bikini is the Colaless model by Natty

Swimwear, I heard you have it in every color! What is the best thing

about this bikini while surfing?

NP: The best thing about any bikini is the fit and Natty surf bikiniʼs

have a unique and sexy fit. Zoraida Pagan, founder and designer of

Natty Swimwear, is a surfer herself, so she knows what active girls

need in the water (fit, comfort and durability). When your in the water

you donʼt want to be worrying about your bikini falling off, you just

want to surf, Natty Swimwear does that for me. I am proud to be part

of Natty Surf Team!

LIR: What suggestions can you give girls who are looking for a

sporty swim suit that looks good?

NP: Always try it on and never by something you donʼt feel

comfortable in. You definitely donʼt want to get something too big

because the water tends to drag it off, especially while surfing; the

smaller and tighter the better. Tight bikinis donʼt move at all, so you

can concentrate on surfing, plus no bad tan lines and they look really

cute!

Year after year we continue producing this suitmodel year after year be-cause it definitely doesn’t move out of place, it is our top seller on the island”.

LIR: Natty, your favorite bikini is the Colaless model by Natty Surf Swimwear, I heard you have it in every color! What do you consider is the best thing about this bikini while surfing? NP: The best thing about any bikini is the fit and Natty surf Surf bikinis’s have a unique and sexy fit. Zoraida Pagan, founder and designer of Natty Surf Swimwear, is a surfer herself, so she knows what active girls need in the water (fit, comfort, and durability). When you’re in the water you don’t want to be worrying about your bikini falling off, you just want to surf., Natty Surf Swimwear does that for me. I am proud to be part of Natty Surf Team! LIR: What suggestions can you give girls who are looking for a sporty swim suit that looks good? NP: Always try it on and never by something you don’t feel comfortable in. You definitely don’t want to get something too big because the water tends to drag it off, especially while surfing; the smaller and tighter the better. Tight bikinis don’t move at all, so you can con-centrate on surfing, plus no bad tan lines and they look really cute!

SHIPWRECK BAR and GRILL

Taste

One of my favorite things about writing the restaurant profile is hearing the stories of the people and how their restaurants came to be.

I`ve heard stories of great success, of failure, and of dreams coming true. There are also times when dreams get shattered. But with hard work and a touch of luck, those dreams can be rebuilt into something much sweeter.

When you enter the Shipwreck Bar & Grill restaurant one of the first things you notice is the mast of the sailboat Scarlet standing there proudly. She crashed into the rocks after coming off her mooring on an early season big swell. After finding out that she was not worth fixing, the owners dismantled her and used some of her parts as décor. This is how a very fitting name came to be for their restaurant, The Shipwreck Bar & Grill.

The restaurant is the sailboat’s treasure that can only be found at the marina in Rincón. Shipwreck has outside covered seating and a very relaxing, comfortable feel. You know you are in the islands with the breeze blowing through the dining area and the sound of waves breaking in the background. Add a drink from their fully stocked bar and even that Jimmy Buffet guy would be jealous.

When I went to have dinner there recently I was greeted by an old friend who just happens to be one of the best waiters on the island. I had a hunch I was in for a treat and as the night went on my suspicions were confirmed. The food is wonderful, take for example the jalapeño poppers, wait one second if your thinking about those store bought pre-made things so many people use. No, these are very different and unforgettable. If you really want to be brave, add one of their house made hot sauces. Once your tongue stops tingling try the crispy calamari tossed in a red sauce, the mussels with garlic and white wine, the bamboo skewered shrimp, or the seared tuna and seaweed salad with a tamari ginger vinaigrette which was perfectly prepared and defines the word: delicious. There are other salads available, as well as, wraps, burgers, fish tacos, wings, steaks, pastas, and even a grilled pork kabob with tzaziki sauce. They use a signature rub for their meats. The seafood is impeccably fresh and the pastas are cooked and sauced perfectly. It must have been a really bad day to find out you lost your sailboat, but as far as I am concerned the Scarlet lives on at Shipwreck Bar & Grill. Now everyone can share her treasures of delicious food and great service. The word on the street is that someone, I won`t mention any names but he`s one of the owners, likes to play dj later in the night and the Halloween party on October 31st is an occasion you don`t want to miss. The Scarlet may not be sailing anymore, but she still makes a lot of people happy.

Miguel “Tito” Rodríguez and Adolfo “Fito” González Duet

Adiam condimentum Purus, in consectetuer Proin in sapien. Fusce urna magna, neque eget lacus. Maecenas felis nunc, aliquam ac, consequat vitae, feugiat at, blandit vitae, euismod vel.

Playing music together since they were kids, Miguel and Adolfo have a connection while performing that

is woven as tight as the layers of sound produced by the string instruments each one plays. Miguel plays classical guitar or violin and Adolfo plays the acoustic bass or guitar. Both musicians attended “Es-cuela Libre de Musica Ramos Antonini” in Mayaguez, and Miguel has his Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the Interamerican University of San German. They both went their separate ways for some time, Tito played the guitar with Mattador and Sol d’Menta, while Fito was playing the bass with Vivanativa, Skapulario and Millo Tor-res. In 2010, they reunited to start this new project. “It was natural to play together,” admits Adolfo. The Duet sounds like a Jazz/Rock Brew, with hints of Jazz mas-ters like Wes Montgomery or John Coltrane and a touch of progressive rock bands like Rush. And when Miguel picks up the violin

the depth of enjoyment turns in to a kind of musical therapy, transcending the being to new emotional heights!

You can catch this Duet playing at One-Ten-Thai in Aguadilla or Calypso Café in Rincón on the weekends.

Vivanativa, Skapulari o y Millo Torres.

Zo Ann Stanley is a Yoga instructor and owner of Aguadilla Storage

What makes you feel free? Waking up every morn-ing on this incredibly beautiful island and knowing I have the free will to make each day the best day of my life!

What worries you? Worry? What’s the point? I don’t do that.

Your favorite film? It’s a toss-up between Casa-blanca and Pulp Fiction. Crazy extremes I know, but it depends on my mood.

Favorite musician, group, song/album, or combi-nation thereof? I love it all! I listen to everything from rock to country, reggae to opera. I was raised on country music, but grew up during the best years of rock and roll. And who doesn’t like Bob Marley or Pavarotti! The message is what’s most important to me. I avoid anything with a negative message.

Your drug of choice? The redder the wine the bet-ter!

Who inspires you right now? I would have to say that my students, my teachers, and my personal practice of yoga help me find inspiration inside myself.

What do you think your purpose is on earth? It would have to be teaching. I feel most alive when I’m able to share my passion with others. It just always feels right.

What do you love about your city and what do you hate about it? Definitely love its location. We are surrounded by beautiful beaches and green mountains. Ugh…as a business owner I hate the high taxes!

What would you like to come back as in your next life? Mankind’s karma isn’t looking too good right now. Maybe I’ll choose to stay in the spiritual realm while it gets sorted out.

A quote to live by or personal motto? Suffering is only necessary until you realize that suffering is no longer necessary.

What is Soul? The energy that moves through the universe connecting everyone and everything.

Inside the Creative World of Maria Kuzmovich By Hannah Skye Griek

What makes you feel free?

Being outside in nature or in the ocean. I love looking around and seeing so many beautiful

things, it really is the definition of freedom to me. What worries you? Natural disasters. They are so unpredictable and scary. Your favorite film? There are too many to choose from. I love dramas and love stories, but also like a good laugh. I just recently watched Dinner with Schmucks and it was pretty funny.Favorite musician, group, song/album, or combination thereof? I am a huge Ben Harper fan, I think his music is amazing, I think he is a really creative artist and his music inspires me. I also like Cultura Profectica and Rise Against.Your drug of choice? Chocolate! Who inspires you right now? Carissa Moore, the current women’s world champion of surfing, she is amazing. I also have a strong belief in God and he inspires me every day in everything I do.What do you think your purpose is on earth? To share love and happiness with others. I feel happiest when others are happy as well. I know I always appreciate a friendly person

or a positive attitude. What do you love about your city and what do you hate about it?I love how laid back and relaxed Isabela is. It is the perfect tempo for my life. It has enough of everything I need. I don’t hate anything about it, but I do wish we all recycled more. What would you like to come back as in your next life?I think I’d still want to be a human being. Maybe be born in Australia, that would be pretty neat. A quote to live by or personal motto? All things are possible through Christ who strengthens me. Any time I doubt something or come to an obstacle in my life I think of these words and it always helps me move forward. What is Soul? I think it is what makes us who we are. Whatever you are passionate about or truly care about shows some of your soul but only when you really connect with someone or something can you fully see their soul. That’s why soul mates are so special.

También me gusta Cultura Profética y Rise Against. ¿Tú droga preferida? ¡Chocolate!

quien me da fuerza.

What makes you feel free? T2: Having creative freedom from being my own boss at Banana Dang, and answering only to my customers—who have improved the shop from menu input to marketing. What worries you? Mario: Maintaining the highest quality possible is my #1 goal every day.Your favorite film? Mario: The Matrix and Brazil. T2: Sideways.Favorite musician, group, song/album or combination thereof? Mario: Everyone involved in the specialty coffee chain—from farmers to pickers and coffee roasters. What do you think your purpose is on earth? Mario: To be an enterprising worker that contributes to the development of coffee as “culinary art”.What do you love about your city and what do you hate about it? Mario: I love how the land meets the beautiful ocean and the people in the community of Rincón. What I don’t like is the air and noise pollution created by advertisers through loud speakers—they need to live in the 21st century and put their ads on the internet. What would you like to come back as in your next life? Mario: 10-time World Champion Pro-Surfer that owns and operates Banana Dang Coffee Bar. T2: Surprisingly, I’ve always been obsessed with people’s hair–so I’d like to be a hairstylist in my next life, for sure.A quote to live by, or personal motto? T2: Passion, motivation and dedication. If you have all three—you will always be employable. What is soul? Mario: Doing something that moves you to the core and touches others.

Production is currently taking place in Argentina, utilizing the

best elastics combined with italian lycra, which feels amazing on the

skin and is very resilient, plus they are double lined for extra

reinforcement” comments Zoraida. “There are two favorites among

the surfer girls.

Tight bikinis donʼt move at all, so you

can concentrate on surfing, plus no bad tan lines and they look really

cute!

Rique Colón expresses his positive vision and a social-humanistic perspective of the world

Puerto Rican Guitarist-Singer-Songwriter, Rique Colón ex-presses his positive vision and a social-humanistic per-spective of the world that surrounds him, in a message of

respect for nature, utilizing fresh and profound melodies which are truly present in his particular style of ‘Chanova’ (an essence of Puerto Rican roots with Afro-Caribbean, Jazz and a very important touch of Bossa and Pop elements).

His passion for music led him to receive a Bachelor’s degree in classical music at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico and later a Bachelor’s degree from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

After graduation he returned to his homeland to produce and pres-ent his record Sentido Tropical, which was ranked seventh among the 20 best albums of 2006. Sentido Tropical also won best Latin album in the Independent Music Awards competition in the Unit-ed States, was a semifinalist in the category of Best Latin album award in the Independent Music World Series, and twice winner of the contest “Berklee sings in Spanish” presented at the Lunario’s National Amphitheatre in Mexico City.

Rique has performed in various venues around Puerto Rico, Miami, Boston, Croatia, Italy, and Mexico. He presented an educational tour of illustrated conferences commissioned by the Berklee Alum-ni Grant and a 2nd phase of this tour was sponsored by National Endowment for the Arts. He is currently preparing a 3rd phase of this educational tour to continue around the country which will be sponsored by the Puerto Rican Fund for Cultural Affairs.

Rique presents his music in various formats. One of which is the Trio Experimental featuring Jeffrey Latten on bass and Leslie Lar-onga on drums. He also performs with various musicians in and around his hometown of Aguadilla, and also surrounding areas with percussionists Juan Carlos Aviles and Abraham Velázquez.
