“Anno nuovo, vita nuova” si dice. Eppure,
nella redazione di Salento Dove, tutto sem-
bra meravigliosamente invariato. Riman-
gono identiche le persone e rimangono
inalterati gli obiettivi della rivista, tesa a
promuovere il territorio attraverso la va-
lorizzazione delle sue tradizioni, delle sue
eccellenze gastronomiche, dei suoi even-
ti.
zioni. A questo splendido evento popolare,
che unisce sacro e profano, fede e rituale,
dedichiamo alcune pagine interne della
rivista. La copertina, questo mese, è invece
dedicata all’opera d’arte del giovane arti-
sta salentino d’avanguardia Alessio Gloria
razioni sugli spazi pubblici e privati, laici e
sacri, secolari e più moderni del capoluo-
go salentino. E poi tanto altro ancora, dagli
appuntamenti legati ai riti della Befana,
agli itinerari turistici, alle bellezze del territo-
rio. Non manca nulla, dunque. Ripartiamo
da dove avevamo lasciato, con gli stessi
obiettivi e le stesse, identiche, passioni.
“A new year, a new life” the saying goes.
And yet among the editorial staff of
SalentoDove, everything is marvellously un-
changed. The people are the same and so
are our objectives - to promote Salento by
enhancing its traditions, its gastronomic ex-
cellences, its events. Talking about events,
January is the month of the Festival of Saint
Anthony and the “Fòcara” at Novoli. A re-
curring event every year on January 16 and
17, a true ritual of devotion where an enor-
mous pyre is constructed. It evokes a sense
of belonging and pride in the citizens of No-
voli and stands as a patrimony of a Salento
that recognizes itself in its traditions. We
have dedicated some of the internal pages
of this month’s SalentoDove to this splendid
popular event that unites the sacred and
the profane, faith and ritual. This month
the cover on the other hand, is dedicated
to a work by the young avant-garde artist
of Salento, Alessio Gloria, who is returning
after his debut exhibition “Digital Synthesis”
with a new series of work named “SPHERÆ”,
which consists of nine elaboration of public
and private spaces, secular and sacred,
ancient and more modern, in the capital
of Salento. And then there is much more,
from the events related to the rites of “La
Befana” to tourist itineraries in the beauty
of the our territory. As you can see we are
not short on anything. We start anew from
where we left off with the same objectives
and the same passions.

TRA SACRO E PROFANO, LA FEDE E LA FESTA DEL FUOCO
STORIA, RADICI, RITI DELLA FOCARA NOVOLESE
THE HISTORY AND THE RITES OF THE FESTIVAL OF FIRE AT NOVOLIa cura delle Fondazione Focara
Elementi appa-
rentemente lontani che a Novoli, in quei
giorni convivono, si compenetrano, si me-
scolano, in un evento culturale e sociale
unico. Gli ultimi anni poi hanno registrato
una crescita esponenziale della Fòcara. In
particolare gli appuntamenti del 16 e del
17 gennaio sono quelli che registrano un’af-
fluenza record.
poco tempo. Il giorno dell’accensione (16
gennaio) è forse il momento più spettaco-
lare della festa, uno spettacolo pirotecni-
co unico seguito da concerti di caratura
internazionale. Una sbornia collettiva che
continua anche il 17 per poi ritrovare una

culturally and socially unique event - the
Fòcara, which has experienced an expo-

have reached record numbers. Every year
an audience of tens of thousands crowd
the square of the Fòcara, a monumental
pyre. Some say it is the biggest in the world,
for sure it is the biggest in the Mediterrane-
an. A sky-scraping tower which is probably
the true meeting point of the double soul
of the festival: the pagan and the religious.
A monument destined to consume itself
shortly. The day of the ignition (January 16)
is probably the most spectacular moment
of the festival, a unique show of fireworks fol-
lowed by concerts of international calibre.

La costruzione inizia all’alba dell’ 8 dicem-
glio.
ary 18 with the so called “villagers party”.
The construction of the pyre begins at sun-
rise of December 8, an ancient rite that
initiate the Fòcara, a bonfire that reaches
25 meters in height and 20 meters in diam-
eter, and ends on midday of January 16.
The pyre is made of vine branches, recov-
ered from the pruning of the vineyards and
stacked masterly with ancient techniques
passed along jealously from generation to
generation, from father to son. In average
90-100,000 bundles of branches are used
to complete the pyre. It takes the work of
about 100 people to construct the Fòcara.
On the eve before the big event, the icon
of the Saint is placed on the very top of the
pyre, where it will be burned the following
day together with the bonfire. This is the
fundamental element of the festival, what
characterize it and makes it unique. A task
that is in itself a ritual, a ritual stubbornly re-
sisting time, passed down through the gen-
erations with pride and constructed with
passion and tireless devotion. It is one of
the biggest and yet intangible patrimonies
of our land.

d’Italia. La vecchia signora arrivava sulla
sua scopa il dodicesimo giorno dopo Na-
tale, per l’Epifania, distribuendo dolciu-
mi o sorprese ai bimbi buoni e carbone e
cenere a quelli cattivi. Non più tardi degli
anni ’60 e ’70 i bambini andavano a letto
presto per aspettare i regali della Befana.
Solo lei avrebbe portato i doni di Natale,
dal momento che la tradizione Nordica di
Babbo Natale era ancora sconosciuta. In
giorno in Salento i contadini celebravano
bruciata come i vecchi rami secchi d’olivo
avanzati dalla potatura, ma la nuova vita
For centuries the tradition of “La Befana”
has been very much alive in Salento as well
as in the rest of Italy. The old woman on her
broomstick would arrive on the 12th day af-
ter Christmas, on the day of the epiphany,
and give sweets and treats to the nice kids
and charcoal or ashes to the naughty kids.
As late as in the 60ies and 70ies kids went to
bed early to await the presents of La Befana.
Only she would bring any presents for Christ-
mas, as the Nordic tradition of Santa Claus
was still widely unknown. In those days the
stockings would be stuffed with chocolates
and candies and sometimes even rag dolls,
tin cars or leather balls. In earlier days yet a
mandarin or some dried fruits, figs and the
like were treats much awaited. Also today
children can expect to receive stockings
stuffed to the point of explosion..
But the Epiphany was more than just pre-
sents and sweets for the kids. On this day
in Salento the rural inhabitants would cel-
ebrate the passing of the year, the death
of nature and its rebirth. In the small town
of Aradeo near Nardò on the Ionian coast,
“La Pifanìa’” has been celebrated in a most
particular way since somewhere before the

innumerevoli sfere giganti, multiformi e mul-
artista salentino d’avanguardia Alessio Glo-
Visionario sperimentatore, dissacrante in-novatore.

modellazione tridimensionale fotorealistica.
L’arte, a mio avviso, è comunicazione e,
come tale, si evolve attraverso il progredi-
re delle tecniche di rappresentazione. La
computergrafica 3D è ciò che, in tal senso,
mi affascina di più consentendomi di rela-
zionarmi in maniera alternativa e innovati-
ci e privati, sacri, secolari, politici, laici
della mia città. Visioni “metareali”, configu-
razioni spaziali differenti, oltre le consuete
rappresentazioni iconografiche, oltre ciò
che vediamo, la cui abitudine e familia-
rità spesso impigrisce l’immaginazione di
possibili opportuni cambiamenti, relativa-
mente alla rappresentazione grafica ma,
soprattutto, alla progettazione concreta
sugli spazi reali.
nostra immaginazione, nelle nostre ispira-
zioni. Il risultato rappresenta ciò che non è
ma che potrebbe divenire.
Progetti e prospettive per il futuro.Il futuro è già presente, basta saperlo im-
maginare e modellare…
study of the history of art as well as its con-
temporary manifestations. The second level
is curiosity and the thoroughness of getting
to know the latest techniques of compo-
sition and representation and, to be more
specific, photo-realistic 3D modelling.
To me art is communication and as such
evolves with the progress of techniques of
representation. In that sense 3D computer
graphics is what interests me the most, al-
lowing me to relate to the surrounding re-
ality in an alternative and innovative way.
And then SPHERÆ, an iconography of Lecce. There are nine different processing of public
and private, sacred, secular and political
spaces of my city. “Meta-real” visions, dif-
ferent configurations of space, apart from
the customary iconographic presentations,
apart from what we see, the habitual famil-
iarity with which we see it, which makes us
too lazy to imagine opportune possibilities
of change relating to the graphic depic-
tion but first of all relating to the concrete
design of real spaces.
Don’t live a life borrowing off the legacies
of history. You have to confront yourself with
them in order to be able to continue to pro-
gress.
You have been using a mixture of photo-graph and 3D modelling...Photography is the main technique we
have for imprinting reality and we all have
experience with it. 3D modelling is a tech-
nique that allows you to represent the un-
real, to give a body and therefore reality
(though only virtual) to whatever we keep
in our imagination, our inspirations. The
result represents what doesn’t, but could,
exist.
Future projects? The future is already present, you just need
to be able to imagine and model it...

dell’interior design made in Italy, lo stile, l’e-

impegno ogni nuova sfida.
In
Italia i vini rappresentano come la moda
un eccellenza e abbiamo selezionato un
vitigno per ogni regione che rappresentas-
se il miglior prodotto di quella terra. E’ nata
determinazione e passione, dimentican-

Fendi and today she is managing several
projects within the restaurant and wine se-
lection sector. I simply have to ask her for
an interview for Salento Dove, and she nods
her head with elegance and a smile. My
curiosity flows freely and I shower her with
questions.
Who is Anna Fendi? An artisan in fashion that has always faced
every new challenge with enthusiasm,
dedication and commitment.
Mrs Fendi, You are the symbol of the three “F”’s of Made in Italy, without adding that also Fendi starts with a “F”…(She smiles). It is true, it has been 15 years
since I left fashion, but right after I dedicat-
ed myself to the renovation of a family villa
turning it into a small and charming resi-
dence with a starred restaurant and finally,
with my husband Pino Tedesco, who is an
enthusiast of the sector, we created a de-
licious collection of wine. In Italy wine like
fashion represents an excellence, and we
have chosen a wine yard for every region
that represents the finest product of that
area. From there an extensive and well de-
fined collection has been created which
has also allowed us to export our bottles to
different countries around the world.

grande passione è sempre stata l’interior
to il meglio! Pino sorride affabilmen-
te e dice: Ho selezionato un Primitivo
di Manduria, un vino robusto, cor-
poso, secco, di un bel colore rosso
cardinalizio e di un buon profumo
di visciole. E poi aggiunge con tono
meno professionale : Ideale per i pri-
mi piatti ben conditi e della tradizio-

anche ad arrosti e formaggi
stagionati.
Terminata la sfilata Pino mi
offre in degustazione un
Calice di Tweed, ovvero il
Primitivo di Manduria che
mi aveva poco prima rac-
contato. Con stupore com-
prendo che la moda ritorna
e che il nome di ogni eti-
chetta non a caso evoca
un tipo di tessuto. Un’idea
bellissima che abbina Food

raccontare allora ai miei in-

look forward and never back! That said my
greatest passion has always been interior
design and that is the reason that I have
now chosen to dedicate myself mainly to
that.
Always lovingly by the side of Your wife, Dr. Tedesco, I turn to you and ask which wine you have chosen from Apulia?Anna anticipates the answer of her
husband and says: He is a connois-
seur and has chosen the best! Pino
smiles graciously and says: I selected
a Primitivo di Manduria, a robust and
full-bodied dry wine with a beautiful
cardinal red and a fragrance of sour
cherries. He then adds in a less profes-
sional tone of voice: It is an ideal wine
for traditional Apulian well-sea-
soned first courses and it also
goes very well with roasted

‘ANELLI DI SETA’ DI GEORGETTE CREAZIONIL’ELEGANZA DI PEZZI UNICI E PREGIATI
SILK RINGS BY GEORGETTE CREAZIONI - UNIQUE, ELEGANT AND PRECIOUSdi Elena Cagnazzo
donna. Chiediamo a Giorgia Greco, la
titolare, quali sono i segreti del successo
del brand emergente, che si affaccia sul
panorama salentino con un posto esclu-
sivo nel mondo fashion.
Come nasce Georgette Creazioni?
Vado spesso
a Como per scegliere personalmente i
tessuti, lasciandomi ispirare dagli abbi-
namenti e dalle fantasie.
The delicate and feminine lines of a
woman should be exalted: Georgette
Creazione is the brand that brings to you
a foulard that is a piece of art, unique
and original, the must have of the sea-
son. These very chic scarf’s fall softly
around your neck and frame the face
with precious silk. The elegance of these
silk rings stands out as an indispensable
accessory in the wardrobe of any wom-
an. We are talking to the owner, Giorgia
Greco, about the secrets behind the suc-
cess of the emerging brand taking an ex-
clusive position on the fashion scene of
Salento.
How did Georgette Creazioni come to be?I started almost for fun, like a hobby that
has developed slowly into a proper busi-
ness. My passion for refined textiles and
sowing drives my creativity. The discov-
ery of this very particular silk from Como
has been crucial: The city in Lombardy
is the textile hub of silk, with international
prestige and an ancient tradition. I often
go to Como to personally choose the
fabrics, taking inspiration of patterns and
combinations. The silk rings are adorned
with many flowering colours that give
life to the foulards created with various
types of silk: Crêpe de chine al geor-
gette, chiffon, satin.
Two years ago I opened the Facebook
page @georgettecreazioni to give my
acquaintances and friends the oppor-
tunity to see my work. A year ago when

senta i nostri pezzi:
rea e quindi a ogni stagione.

YOURS FOR A DAY - KARAT IS THE FIRST IN SALENTO TO OFFER RENTAL OF JEWELLERY
aziendale. “La nostra attenzione al tema
della moda e del lusso – spiega Alessandra
Tortorella, proprietaria di Karat Gioielli - ha
radici un po’ più lontane. Negli scorsi mesi,

“Yours for just one day” is much more than
just a mischievous message. It is the claim
of the new communication campaign of
the historical jewellery shop of Lecce, Kar-
at Jewellery. Entrepreneur Gilberto Maci of
the Due Palme winery, who is also a known
socialite of Lecce, is lending the campaign
a known face, and, not the least, establish-
ing a collaboration between the two com-
panies, both choosing the combination
of food/wine and fashion as a marketing
tool.“Our interest in fashion and luxury goes

Tortorella, owner of Karat Jewellery - in the
last few months the Karat brand has par-
ticipated, through the MadMood format
of Salento, in some of the most important
fashion weeks in Europe, with great success
in terms of tangible results, but also when it
comes to awakening an interest in this new
form of marketing.”
Gilberto Maci is on the same track: “I

attenzione e curiosità verso il nuovo format
di marketing”. Le fa eco Gilberto Maci: “Ho
accettato subito la proposta di Karat
Gioielli, per due ordini di motivi. Il
primo, perché trovo che il bino-
mio Food&wine/fashion sia un
ottimo strumento per definire e
costruire tecniche di mercato,
e secondo, non meno impor-
tante, perché credo moltissi-
mo nella collaborazione fra
aziende locali che fanno rete
per crescere insieme”.
La campagna di comunicazio-
ne “Tuo solo per un giorno”, che
vede Gilberto Maci assoluto prota-
Alessandra Tortorella: “Pensiamo
risultati. Nella vita, come nel commercio, bi-
sogna osare. Come singoli e come aziende,
straight away accepted this proposal from
Karat Jewellery for two reasons. First be-
cause I find the combination of Food/
wine and Fashion to be a perfect
instrument to define and con-
struct market techniques; and
secondly, but not less impor-
tant, because I am a firm
believer in the collaboration
between local companies,
to create networks and grow
together.”
The campaign “Yours for just
one day” with Gilberto Maci
as the main protagonist togeth-
er with a piece of jewellery from
Karat, is referring to a unique initiative
for Salento - the rental of jewellery, the last
frontier of luxury rental. Alessandra Tor-
torella: “We imagine a wedding, a gala
dinner, a evening at the theatre, work or
representation lunches. The possibility to
lend a piece of jewellery at a favourable
price, that otherwise you wouldn’t be able
to afford, is a new proposal in Salento, Karat
Jewellery being the only enterprise in Lec-
ce and surroundings. The fact that Gilberto
Maci is lending himself to a campaign with
a slogan that invites for a rendezvous of just
one day, is typical of his readiness to put
himself into play, of his sense of irony and
his savoir faire.”
Gilberto concludes: “I am sure that the
pinch of malice of the claim will be the
harbinger of great results. In life as well as
in business you need to take risks. As indi-
viduals and as companies we are ready to
focus on the growth of our brands and of all
of the territory.

porto naturale. Probabilmente hai nuotato
nelle acque cristalline e turchesi della baia
dalla spiaggia piena e hai camminato sul
lungomare quando scende la calda serata
estiva.
If you have ever visited Salento in the high
season of summer, you have probably
been to the furthermost eastern city of It-
aly - Otranto. You will have strolled along
the ancient alleys of the fortified old town
in the maze of souvenir shops while being
dragged along by the steady stream of
tourists. On every corner a charming restau-
rant, the harbour full to the brink of vessels
of all sizes, coming and going through the
narrow entrance to the natural port. You
will probably have had a swim in the crystal
turquoise waters of the bay from the busy
beach and walked along the promenade
as the warm summer night descended.
Now a quick jump forward in time. Summer

has passed, autumn has passed, Christmas
has passed. It s January, winter in Salento.
The air is crisp, the sky even clearer than in
those summer days spent on the beach.
The sun is low and shadows are long and
deep. An afternoon in Otranto is a com-
pletely different thing today. As you ap-
proach the fortress, the high walls open up
in black arches, sharp shadows cover the
corners of the courtyard. Up high you can
see the façades of houses, layer on layer,
looking over the bay. But most importantly
- the city is empty. As you once again let
yourself get lost in the narrow labyrinth of
its streets, you can begin to imagine how it
might have been here years ago. But really
Otranto was always a busy town, a place
to meet, to trade, to travel from, and this
silence must be due to the lunch hour or
maybe the inhabitants have left to enjoy a
well earned vacation somewhere else dur-
ing off season. They have left the city for
you to explore.

qualities of the ancient Norman cathedral
L’estate è passata, l’autunno anche, Nata-
le è trascorso. È gennaio, inverno in Salento.
spiaggia. Il sole è basso e l’ombra è am-
pia e profonda. Il pomeriggio ad Otranto è
qualcosa di completamente diverso oggi.
Quando ti avvicini alla fortificazione, le alte
mura si aprono in archi neri, ombre affilate
ricoprono gli angoli del cortile. Lassù in alto
puoi scorgere le facciate delle case, stratifi-
cate, che si affacciano sull’insenatura. Ma,
soprattutto, la città è vuota. Se ancora una
volta ti perdi nello stretto labirinto di strade,
puoi cominciare a immaginare come pote-
bassa stagione. Hanno lasciato la città per
fartela esplorare.

shadow. Silence rules, only the voice of a
single priest singing a psalm, for his own
and God s pleasure only, can be heard un-
der the tall arches. You can marvel at the
famous mosaic floor without disturbance.
If you descend into the crypt, meditate
in the beauty of the many small and ele-
gant columns, each one different in colour
and carvings, the soft light and the peace
down here enchanting you.
While you have been in the church, early
evening is already approaching and the
light has changed again. The golden colour
of the stone walls caressed by the last rays of
sun complements the view of the sea per-
fectly. And as the sun sets behind you, the
lights around the bay reflects like thousands
of stars in the water. Walking around the top
of the city walls you inhale this beauty, the
colours turning soft with the dusk, the wide
horizon opening to the east, seagulls swing-
ing about rooftops and towers.

mistica dell’antica cattedrale normanna
famoso mosaico pavimentale, in silenzio.

EPIFANIA, TRADIZIONI E LEGGENDELEGENDS AND TRADITIONS OF THE EPIPHANY
so.
re sogni e speranze brillanti.
The figure of “La Befana” is drawing from
deep and ancient memories in Christian
as well as in Orthodox traditions and in
pagan legends. On the night between
January 5 and 6 the old granny flies across
the sky hunched on her broom made
from brushwood and an olive trunk. She is
a symbol of nature offering to man the last
spoils of the land from the year passed.
La Befana represents nature in the winter
months keeping in her womb the seeds
waiting to sprout when spring arrives.
With her wrinkled face she is much loved
by the little ones because she is a part
of that enchanted world of dreams and
bright hopes. She is halfway a witch with
her long nose and the white hair tugged
under a scarf, and halfway a fairy god-
mother flying by night from house to
house leaving her presents in children

stockings by the fireplace. She brings her
presents to the good kids: simple presents
because dear as she is, she is not as rich as
Santa Claus. The naughty kids get charcoal
in their stockings, but it is really not such a
bad present. In the past it would have been
very useful to heat the house in the cold
months. La Befana rewards the children ac-
cording to their behaviour in the past year
and so closes the yearly cycle.
In Apulia the tradition of ‘La Pifanìa’ was
introduced in the 6th century a.d. after the
war between the Byzantine and the Goth
reconquering the peninsula. In Salento the
popular tradition is connected to old Or-
thodox rites that considered the celebra-
tion of January 6, and the beginning of the
new year, among the most important of the
liturgical calendar.
Already in the 3rd century January 5 was
celebrated in the Christian tradition. In
Greek “Epifania” means manifestation,
Christian communities of the Near East as-
sociated the word with the three signs of the
coming of Christ: the adoration of the three
kings, the baptism in the river of Jordan and
the first miracle performed by Jesus in Cana.
In Persia and Palestine the kings were wise
men competent in astrology. They are men-
tioned in the Gospel of Matthew. The three
kings followed the comet, which was a sign
of the birth of a great king. They arrived at
stable in Bethlehem and found baby Jesus.
They brought gold, incense, used as an of-
fering gift for the gods and myrrh, a plant
that was used in the form of oil to conse-
crate kings, priests and prophets (then given
the honorary title of “Christ” – the oiled one).
It is told that at one point the three kings
couldn’t see the comet in the sky and
stopped to ask directions from an old lady.
When they had left, the old woman regret-
ted she hadn’t come with them to adore
the child and took a sack of treats and be-
freddi.
dendo un ciclo legato all’anno trascorso.
In Persia e
in Palestina i re Magi erano gli uomini saggi
e competenti di astrologia, citati nel Van-
gelo secondo Matteo. I Magi seguivano la
cometa, come indizio della nascita di un
grande re. Arrivarono alla grotta di Gesù
Bambino a Betlemme. Donarono l’oro, l’in-

portargli i suoi doni golosi.
stizio d’inverno. Quella notte portava con
sé tanti sogni, predizioni e superstizioni per
propiziare un buon raccolto. I contadini a
fortunato. La Chiesa dava alla Befana un
valore sacrificale: nella tradizione popolare
si bruciavano i suoi fantocci come buon au-
spicio, rinascita e purificazione.
gan her journey going from house to house
entering through the chimney and leaving
goodies for all the children hoping to find
baby Jesus and give him her sweet offerings.
According to pagan tradition the period
of the epiphany was the time to celebrate
the death and rebirth of nature only 12 days
after winter solstice. It would be a night of
dreams predictions bringing about the pre-
monition of a good harvest. At midnight
the farmers would go to their windows and
search the sky for a promise of a good year
for the wine. In the country side bonfires
would be lit and children would congregate
to invoke the presents of La Befana. The
young girls would sing a verse before they
went to sleep, and if they then dreamt of
an adorned church or a flowering garden,
the next year would bring good fortune. The
Church would bring a meaning of sacrifice
to La Befana: In popular culture puppets
representing her would be burned as a
good omen, sign of rebirth and purification.
“The epiphany brings the holidays away” a
popular saying goes with a touch of mel-
ancholy because the day marks the end of
the holiday season; La Befana brings away
with her the last scent of magic and folklore.

ESPLORANDO IL MONDO SUBACQUEODALLO IONICO ALL’ADRIATICO I PIÙ BEI PUNTI DI IMMERSIONE
THE UNDERWATER WORLD - THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SITES OFF THE COAST OF SALENTO di Maria Thilo
si trova un paradiso terrestre dopo l’altro;
rocce o sabbia – per tutti i gusti. Nei mesi
estivi sarebbe meglio arrivare presto o po-
tresti non trovare un posto dove mettere
l’asciugamano. E poi la stagione finisce e a
settembre puoi godere dell’acqua ancora
germente meno intenso, quasi in solitudine.
ghe passeggiate sulle spiagge vuote, assa-
Ti sei
mai chiesto come ti vede il mare, mentre
stai là in piedi a fissarlo? C’è un unico modo
per scoprirlo: immergerti in quelle acque
trasparenti e guardare le onde dal basso. E
mersioni guidate e l’affitto dell’attrezzatu-
ra. Da Otranto, Santa Cesarea Terme, San-
Salento is known for its sea. Along both the
Ionian and the Adriatic coast you will find
one paradise on earth after the other; rocks
or sand - something for every taste. In the
summer months you better come early, or
you might not find a place to put down your
towel. At the end of the season in Septem-
ber you can enjoy the water still warm after
months of heat and the slightly less intense
sun almost on your own. When the water
gets cold there are still ways to enjoy the
sea, fishing trips, long walks on the empty
beaches enjoying the sun reflecting in the
waves. Wonder what view the sea might
have of you while you stand there gazing?
There’s one way to find out: immerse your-
self into those transparent waters and watch
the waves from below. And you will find that
there is yet another hidden side of beauty to
the sea of Salento – the underwater world.
All along the coast of Salento the two seas
are dotted with interesting and beautiful
diving sites, and from several ports there are
diving services open all year offering guid-
ed dives and rental of gear. From Otranto,

murene. Grotte vicino la costa, dove i som-
mozzatori più inesperti possono risalire per
prendere aria, o grotte sottomarine, piene
bombardiere sommerso nello stesso perio-
do.
lipoli whoever has a diving certificate can
jump on a boat and experience a vast va-
riety of dives.
From the port the expedition takes off on a
large dinghy loaded with all the necessary,
each diver equipped with body suit, flip-
pers, mask and tanks. The crew will take you
to one of the numerous exciting sites. Sea-
beds and shelf’s dotted with sponges, sea
anemones and lots and lots of fish, from
tiny seahorses to moray eels. Caves near
the coast where the more inexperienced
diver can come up for air, or underwater
caves full of colour and life to explore in
the depths. Not to mention the shipwrecks
from many different eras – recent ones as
the Tevfik Kaptan One that went under as
late as in 2007, Warships such as Neuralia
that took part in both the First and Second
World War to finally meet a mine a mile from
Torre Inserraglio or even destroyer airplanes
sunk in the same period. Or why not visit the
Madonna of the two seas, a three meter
tall statue under 15 meter of water near the
coast of Santa Maria di Leuca where the
Ionian and the Adriatic sea meet. Of course
there are also relics of even earlier periods
of times to be found, Greek amphorae,
marble columns and who know what else
that could be hidden under the sand.. Just
grab your gear and go explore!

RELAX & OSPITALITÀ
UN POMERIGGIO INDIMENTICABILECALLISTOS HOTEL&SPA DI TRICASE: TRA OSPITALITÀ ED ECOSOSTENIBILITÀ
AN UNFORGETTABLE AFTERNOON AT CALLISTOS HOTEL&SPAdi Elena Cagnazzo
“Buongiorno e ben arrivati. Prego, gradi-
te delle meringhe? Portate con voi solo il
costume, tutto l’occorente vi aspetta nel-
la spa”. Il direttore Gianluca Metrangolo
dell’Hotel Callistos ormai conosce bene le
abitudini mie e del mio compagno e ci of-
Siamo
stati già all’Hotel Callistos l’inverno scorso
mercoledì pomeriggio libero ci godiamo in
“Hello and welcome. Can I offer you some
meringues? Bring your swimming suits,
everything you need is awaiting you in the
spa”. Gianluca Metrangolo, the director of
Hotel Callistos, knows the habits of me and
my partner by now, and offers us the local
organic pastry.
Our second visit to Tricase, a town near the
sea, always lively, at winter as well as by
summer. We have already been at Hotel
Callistos last winter on a business trip, and
despite of the many Italian and foreign
guests we have been met with hospitality
and attention to detail and our every re-
quest. That is why we have returned. On this
free Wednesday afternoon we enjoy some
relax together in the spa of the hotel.
We find ourselves wearing swimming suits
and wrapped in bathrobes in a modern,
warm and cosy atmosphere: a spa con-

moderna, calda e accogliente: una spa
costruita e gestita secondo i criteri dell’eco-
sostenibilità come anche l’intera struttura
dell’hotel. Un lavoro davvero ammirevole,
premiato a livello sia nazionale che inter-
nazionale!
tensioni accumulate.
Dopo una buona mezz’ora a mollo, entria-
mo nella sauna finlandese: un’ondata di
aria caldissima mi avvolge rilassandomi
completamente. Non resisto molto tempo
qui, allora esco, rigenerandomi con la ca-
scata di ghiaccio, trovando giovamento
immediato dal forte sbalzo termico. E siamo
do! Perché non provare subito la doccia
polisensoriale? Un’emozione di colori subito
mi pervade, con profumi floreali e freschi.
structed and run according to sustainable
criteria as is the rest of the hotel. It is really
admirable and has won numerable nation-
al and international prices!
The sand coloured marble reflects the soft
glow of candlelights as we start our well-
ness program, which will continue into late
evening, in the pool: we are surprised to find
hydro-massage benches under the surface
of the water, and let’s not even mention the
waterfall that melts away the tensions build
up in neck and shoulders.
After half an hours time we enter the Finn-
ish sauna: a wave of hot air surrounds me
and relaxes me completely. I can’t resist for
long in here and go out to refresh myself at
the ice cascade, feeling immediate reju-
venated by the thermal shock. And then
we are ready for a steam bath, curious to
experience the sensation of entering into
this warm and balsamic cloud. I inhale and
the delicate essence of eucalyptus pen-
etrates my nostrils and enter the bronchi,
liberating my breath. The heat! Why not try
the multi-sensory shower straight away?
Emotions evoked by the colours and floral
and fresh perfumes come over me. By now
I feel completely reborn. I find my partner
enjoying a local organic cup of tea - there

dell’Himalaya: qui l’aria è calda e secca
do rose e prosecco. Il giorno dopo svegliarsi
e fare colazione con prodotti locali bio.
Il nostro sogno romantico per festeggiare
San Valentino si può finalmente avverare!
are more than 40 different herbal teas to
choose from!
The director had mentioned that in Febru-
ary the spa will be expanded by a special
room with a wall made of rose salt of the
Himalayas: In here the air will be warm and
dry and rejuvenate skin as well as inner or-
gans. I must try this experience!
This is a great idea to pass on to my partner
as a Valentines present for the both of us.
Finally something we would both enjoy. We
could extend the relaxation with a couples
chocolate massage and a candlelight din-
ner in the hotel before returning to the room
finding roses and prosecco awaiting us. On
the next morning we would wake up to a
breakfast of local organic products...
Our Valentines dream can finally come
true!
