Special Meeting Held to Ease Cost for ParentsWhile Saving District More Than $30K
La Feria’s School Board met at 7 a.m. Thursday, July 31 for a Special Meeting to allocate money in order to buy school supplies for La Feria I.S.D. students.
The early morning meeting was scheduled quickly to help save money as LFISD taking quick action to take advantage of sales will save the school district more than 40% of the original estimate.
The district had planned to allocate about $59,000 for student supplies but by taking advantage of sales the district will be able to gather the same amount of supplies for $34,566.13.
With economic times being tough and La Feria residents feeling the squeeze, the board thought to take action in procuring supplies for elementary and middle school students to make it easier for students to attend and offer parents some relief.
Vice-President alan Moore called the meeting to order as soon as quorum was met so that the board could act quickly on the items on the agenda.
While School Board member Gloria Casas expressed concern that she had heard that some educators had purchased items out of their own pocket in the past, Superintendent Reymundo P. Villarreal, Jr. pointed out that teachers are given $125 to help with supplies for their rooms while new teachers are given $250.
“If they are buying the supplies themselves they ought to let their prin-cipal know so we can see what can be done,” said Villarreal.
among the items that will be purchased are pencils, glue sticks, glue, round-tipped scissors, crayons, markers, folders with pockets and brads, wide-ruled notebook paper, colored pencils/map colors, composition books (wide ruled), high-lighters, spiral notebooks, pencil top erasers, index cards, pens, large erasers and rulers. The hope is that all students in La Feria will be able to start the school year without any supplies being missing from their lists.

The board unanimously agreed to make the funds available and then moved to the next item on the agenda which was the floor of the gymnasium at W.B. Green Jr. High. While the project was initially under the ceiling of $25,000, which requires school board approval, additional requirements pushed the budget up by an additional $1,950.
Superintendent Villarreal pointed out that the $25,000 ceiling is based on stan-dard practices from several years back and pointed out that many school districts have raised the require-ment to $50,000. He asked that the board take that into consideration for the future which would facilitate such repairs being made in a more timely manner.
The school board nor-
mally meets once a month unless need arises for a special session. The July 31, meeting was held as a special session due to the savings to the district.

A Homesteading Starting Point
Gardeningo you have that proverbial “green thumb?” If not, maybe it’s just because of poor quality
soil in your garden. Having nutrient-rich, fertile soil is one of the biggest factors in the overall well-being of your garden. We can see something similar with people and animals in that having a healthy diet usually translates to having a healthy body. If the soil in the garden has the right amount of nutrients and the right kinds of microorganisms, the plants that are in the garden will not only be more resistant to diseases and insects that feed on the plants, but will also be full of nutrients for you when consumed. However, if the soil does not have the right amount or kinds of nutrients and microorganisms then the plants will be weak, prone to diseases and insect in-festations, and be lacking in nutrients.
Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potas-sium are among the most important nutrients your soil needs; however all plants need at least 16 different nutrients. Most store-bought fertil-izers have nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but they don’t have all the other nutrients. So how do you get all 16 nutrients into your soil? The easiest way to do this is to add com-post to your soil instead of fertilizer.
Compost has all these nutrients and microorganisms that are beneficial to the soil.
Here’s how the plant cycle works: Plants need nutrients, so they take them from within the soil. Once the plant dies, the dead plant material contains the nutrients. Microorgan-isms break down those dead plant materials and make the nutrients into a form usable by the new plants. With composting, you collect the compostable material (like dead plants) and keep it in a favorable en-vironment so that the microorganisms thrive and break down the materi-als quickly. Then when you add the compost to your soil, all the nutrients are in a form the plants can absorb.
Therefore, for quality fruits and vegetables you must maintain the quality of your soil.

portal for state’s Deepwater Horizon recovery efforts
The State of Texas has unveiled restorethetexas-coast.org, a dedicated online resource for Deepwater Horizon oil spill recovery efforts.
Restorethetexascoast.org features links and back-ground information on the three funding sources available, RESTORE (Resources & Ecosystems Sus-tainability, Tourist Opportunities and Revived Econo-mies of the Gulf Coast States), NFWF/GEBP (Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund) and NRDA (Natural Resource Damage Assessment). The site also includes details associated with the state’s efforts to implement the RESTORE Act in Texas. Use of these funds will facilitate efforts to sustain a coordinated and integrated approach to appropriately respond to various coastal needs, both environmentally and economically.
With passage of the federal RESTORE Act, funds will be made available to the five Gulf States, includ-ing Texas, from civil and administrative penalties as-sessed against responsible parties associated with the one of the largest environmental disasters in U.S. his-tory.
“Texas’s biological and economic resources are vital to both the health of the Gulf and our nation. Texas will uti-lize RESTORE Act funds on coastal restoration and eco-nomic revitalization, which will provide benefits not only in Texas, but across the Gulf Coast region and beyond,”

Owners Veronica and Adrian Ruelas continue to add new services and conve-niences for their growing list of satisfied customers. What began as a small insurance office on Oleander Street has now grown to embrace the whole insurance field while branching into other special-ties. How this progressive couple did it is this week’s feature story.
Veronica graduated in 2000 from Santa Maria High School with the dream of having her own business. “I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, my own boss,” she said. “I know it requires risk-taking, but I wanted to realize my dream owning and managing the business of my choice.”
That opportunity came the next year when she became an agent of the PRONTO INSURANCE COMPANY and opened her first store on Oleander Street in La Feria. That same year she mar-ried Adrian Ruelas. Ruelas was also a graduate of Santa Maria High School--class of 1997. Now married, they went about growing their new business,
Veronica reflects on her choice of profession and
choice of company to work for. “The insurance business just looked interesting with lots of opportunities,” she said. “We started out with basic automobile liability policies and just kept adding on new types of full-coverage insurance. I have been with PRONTO INSURANCE for 14 years because I have found them to be very reasonable and affordable to our local residents. They also have fast claim service. It has been a great educational process.”
She moved to her new 405 Main Street location because “we added new ser-vices and needed more room and visibility.” They added: Notary Public services, bill pay-stations, MoneyGram money transfers all over the United States and other coun-tries. The expanded list now includes: FAX service and copy center. Their insurance service has expanded to in-clude: automobile, commer-cial and homeowner coverage policies.
Her brother, John Me-drano, joined the company as a licensed insurance agent in 2010. “John sells policies covering the whole insurance field.”
Next door to the insurance
office is CITY BOUTIQUE. “I opened that beauty product and my customized “bling-shirt’ business in 2012 in partnership with my mother. Janie Medrano, and other family members. We also have school spirit items, such as: mums, streamers, ribbons and bows for students of any school.” She added that they
sell specialized “bling-shirts” throughout the entire Valley.
Veronica is a successful entrepreneur having achieved her dream with her own ex-panding family business on Main Street in her hometown. “Our growing list of custom-ers expands each year.” she said. “We are doing well; it couldn’t be better.”

says Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Commissioner and Chair of the Texas RESTORE Act Advisory Board, Toby Baker.
Plans are also underway for Commissioner Baker to hold four listening ses-sions later this year (in Corpus Christi, Galves-ton, South Padre Island and Beaumont), where participants can provide information on projects they want funded.
“Although the spill was unquestionably terribly unfortunate, the funding stemming from it now represents a critical op-portunity to invest in the well-being and future of the Texas coast,” said Carter Smith, executive director of Texas Parks
and Wildlife Department, one of the trustee agencies overseeing the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Natural Resource Damage Assess-ment. “We are committed to identifying the best pos-sible coastal projects for funding, and this website will help people stay in-formed and involved.”
“As a coastal fisherman myself, I’m excited to see this website go live,” said Texas General Land Office Chief Clerk and Deputy Land Commissioner, Lar-ry Laine,. “Restorethetex-ascoast.org will be a quick, easy way for anyone to propose a coastal project for funding from Texas’s Deepwater Horizon mon-ey. These projects will be a big step in restoring the Gulf and its system of bays
and estuaries and in restor-ing the economy of the coastal communities.”
