Carlos Frago entró en la oficina de la psicóloga, laDra. Pauletta Smith, una especialista en la condición detrastorno de estrés postraumático1. Ella trabajaba en unaclínica en San Luis, Misuri pero venía a esta clínica enCarlyle, IL dos veces al mes para ver a sus clientes alotro lado del río Mississippi.

Por algunos años Carlos había consultado a una psi-cóloga local sin resultados. Su abuela estaba muy preo-cupada por su condición así que cuando escuchó queesta especialista iba a venir a Carlyle, la llamó inmedia-tamente para hacer una cita. Carlos se sentó en una delas sillas grandes y cómodas. Ella lo estaba esperandoen otra silla.

– Qué bueno verte, Carlos. ¿Cómo estás?– Bien –le respondió sin entusiasmo. Carlos

odiaba las visitas a la psicóloga–.– ¿Has soñado con tu mamá esta semana?

No sabía por qué siempre le hacía la misma pre-gunta. ¿Quería hacerlo sentir más loco? SIEMPRE so-ñaba con su mamá y siempre tenía la misma pesadilla:Estaba con su madre, elúltimo día en que la vio.Ella llevaba el vestidonegro que tenía la nocheque desapareció. Estaballorando y llamándolo.Carlos siempre tratabade correr hacia ella yayudarla, pero no podía.Estaba atrapado como siuna fuerza muy grande

no lo dejara ayudarla. Desafortunadamente, cada pesa-dilla terminaba de la misma manera: Ella salía de la casay Carlos se despertaba con una sensación de pánico por-que no la podía salvar.

– ¿Y qué piensas de la medicina que te di? ¿Haymenos pesadillas?

– Sí, hay menos –Carlos mintió. No había tomado la medicina. Ellos lo creían loco

pero él sabía que no lo estaba.– Y la presencia que sientes… ¿Todavía está

contigo?Carlos sintió la respiración de alguien a su espalda

pero mintió otra vez sin pensarlo.– Ya sabes la respuesta, la medicina no me

puede ayudar si no estoy loco –le respondióenojado.

– Carlos, yo sé que no te gustan mis preguntaspero quiero estar segura de que tengo toda laevidencia necesaria para hacer mi diagnóstico–respondió ella sinceramente–. Nadie te creeloco. Sólo queremos ayudarte con las pesadi-llas y las alucinaciones. ¿Cómo te va con lapintura?

Después de haber consultado con un especialistaen la condición de trastorno de estrés postraumático,

Carlos se sentía mejor. Su familia todavía lo creía locopero ella le había recomendado una forma de reducir lapreocupación que sentía por su madre.

– Me gusta. Cuando pinto, siento una fuerte co-nexión con ella.

Desde muy joven, Carlos había dibujado y pintado.Su clase favorita siempre había sido el arte. Como eratan artístico, ella le había recomendado que pintara loque sintiera. Al principio, Carlos estaba escéptico peromientras pintaba realmente se sentía más tranquilo.

– ¿Dra. Smith? –la secretaria llamó a la psicó-loga desde el intercomunicador del teléfono.

– Perdón –le dijo la doctora a Carlos contes-tando el teléfono.

«Sí… está bien. Ya voy».– Carlos, perdóname –le dijo la doctora levan-

tándose abruptamente–. En un momento re-greso.

Cuando ella salió, Carlos se levantó y se acercó alescritorio grande. Allí estaba su archivo. Lo abrió y em-pezó a leer su historia. A los siete años, su madre habíadesaparecido. Desde entonces, las pesadillas lo habíantorturado. Su familia no sabía qué hacer. Cuando tenía8 años, su familia pensó que Carlos sufría de trastornode estrés postraumático y que el salir de la ciudad lo

ayudaría. Así que se fue a vivir con su abuela. Cuandosalió, dejó atrás su escuela, a todos sus amigos, a sustíos, a sus primos y todo lo familiar… pero no dejó atrásel misterio de La Calaca Alegre. Empezó una vida nuevapero no podía dejar atrás la memoria de su madre y surara desaparición.

Ella había escrito una lista con sus síntomas: pesa-dillas, alucinaciones, obsesión, ansiedad…. Carlos noquería leer más. Había pasado diez años escuchandolos consejos de los psicólogos, ya no más. Cerró el ar-chivo de prisa cuando escuchó a la psicóloga en el pa-sillo. Rápidamente regresó a su silla y se sentó antes deque ella abriera la puerta.

– Lo siento, Carlos. Gracias por tu paciencia.Carlos la interrumpió diciéndole:

– Dra. Smith, voy a ir a Chicago. Las medicinasno me van a curar. Lo único que me puedeayudar es encontrar a mi madre. Me visita poralguna razón. Me necesita.

En eso, se levantó y salió del consultorio dejando ala psicóloga boquiabierta sin poder responderle. En lasala de espera su abuela lo miraba sorprendida mientrasque él salía del edificio. Había venido al consultorio conella pero no la esperó, empezó a caminar hacia su casapensando, «No estoy loco. Ya lo van a ver».

Pesadillas

Desde el día desastroso en la oficina de la psicó-loga, su abuela no había tratado de interferir con sus pla-nes de ir a Chicago. ¿Ella le tenía miedo? Carlos no losabía y realmente no le importaba. Solo pensaba en pre-pararse para el viaje.

Carlos abrió su archivo y leyó el reporte policiacootra vez. Estaba cansado pero este archivo era una ob-sesión. Al leerlo, no encontró nada nuevo. La policíahabía ido al restaurante, había investigado la desapari-ción de su madre, pero no había encontrado ningunaevidencia. Carlos no podía creerlo. Quería encontrarlao al menos quería encontrar… algo… Algo que le pu-diera dar la paz que buscaba. «Lo voy a leer una vez

más,» pensó.

5 de mayo del 2002Residencia Frago, Chicago, ILLos Frago dicen que Angélica, hermana menor

del señor Raimundo Frago, recibió una invita-ción ayer, en su trabajo, para una fiesta enel comedor privado del restaurante La CalacaAlegre. El detective James Roberts fue al res-taurante y habló con los empleados. Investi-

garon el testimonio de la familia pero no en-contraron un comedor privado en el restau-rante.

El restaurante acaba de remodelar la cocinay el comedor y recientemente reabrió sus puer-tas al público. Están instalando un letreronuevo en la esquina de las calles 19 y Ashlandpero las otras renovaciones ya han sido ter-minadas.

El detective no encontró nada dentro delrestaurante pero encontró el carro de la se-ñorita Frago enfrente del restaurante contodas sus posesiones adentro. Un grupo de de-tectives llevó el carro a la estación de po-licía para buscar evidencia y otro grupoexploró todo el restaurante. Parece que la Se-ñorita Frago no entró al restaurante.

«¡Nooo, nooooo!». Carlos se movió, gritando y tem-blando. Se había dormido leyendo los papeles que teníaen su archivo. «¡NO VAYAS! ¡NOOOOO! ¡Ma…!».

Se despertó. Podía escuchar los latidos de su cora-zón. Respiraba como si hubiera corrido una maratón.

Carlos se tocó la cabeza regresando al presente. Deniño, Carlos había vivido en Pilsen, un vecindario me-xicano. Originalmente era un vecindario polaco perocon los años los polacos se habían ido dejándole el te-rritorio a los inmigrantes mexicanos. Muchos residentesde Pilsen estaban orgullosos de su comunidad. Habíaalgunos problemas con las pandillas pero la mayoría dela gente era honesta y trabajadora. Ahora que tenía 17años había decidido regresar a Pilsen. Quería regresarpara tratar de resolver el misterio. Quería entrar en LaCalaca Alegre e investigar, pero realmente quería sabermás sobre la última noche de la vida de su madre. Que-ría que las pesadillas lo dejaran en paz. Quería que lapresencia de su madre lo dejara en paz también.

– Carlos –le preguntó su abuela entrando en sudormitorio–, ¿estás seguro? Si regresas a Pil-sen, sólo te vas a encontrar con más pregun-tas. Nadie encontró evidencia y tú…pues...Cariño, los fantasmas no existen. Porfavor, Carlos, escucha los consejos de la psi-cóloga. Toma la medicina. Deja que la Dra.Smith te ayude.

– Abue –le respondió Carlos abrazando a su

abuela–, ¿qué pasa si ella no murió? He leídolos reportes. No encontraron su cuerpo, noencontraron sangre1 ni evidencia de un actoviolento. Ella puede estar viva. Ella está comu-nicándose conmigo. No estoy loco. Me nece-sita.

Su abuela bajó la cabeza sin decir nada. Por fin,habló con voz cariñosa:

– Carlos, tienes 17 años. No dejas de pensar entu mamá y necesitas darte cuenta por ti mismode que no hay una solución para este misterio.No voy a detenerte. Puedes ir –le dijo suabuela preocupada–. Por favor, mijo, no te

metas en líos. Vete a Chicago pero prométemeque cuando regreses vas a tomar en serio losconsejos de la psicóloga.

Ella hizo una pausa y lo miró con ojos tristes. – No te preocupes. No me meteré en líos, abue.

Regresaré. Resolveré el misterio y regresaré.Uds. van a ver, no estoy loco –le respondiócon confianza, abrazándola.
